You pointed out on the Best User Page Contest MfD that comments such as "terrible userpage, looks bad" do not help motivate people to edit. If I'm reading the page correctly, those comments were for User:Example, who tends not to be one of our most prolific or easily-hurt contributors. :-) Seriously though, I understand (and sympathise with) some of your arguments for deleting the page, but I can't see anywhere where unpleasant or negative comments have been made. I also think, as I said before, that projectspace games etc. of this type can help to motivate many (particularly younger) contributors to get interested in Wikipedia. And, of course, userpage design also improves wiki-editing skills. WaltonOne 15:30, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nyo it rename request

Nyo it had already asked me on IRC to change his name. I had already reviewed the request and decided to approve it. I had him leave a message on my talk page because I wanted there to be an on-wiki record of it. Raul654 12:50, 30 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image

What size should the picture here be? Being 600px ~ 800px bloats the main page of the Dragon Ball portal, IMHO. Lord Sesshomaru

For the sake of the article, I'd say 400px, but I'm pretty sure the picture is illegal anyway, given that it's a copyrighted character, but a fan made image, not being used to illustrate an article on fan-made content, it's a copyvio. I'd say delete the image asap, and do something like WP:SIMPSONS-- use an image that's close enough to the series to relate, without using copyrighted characters or imagery. Say, make a shiny orange ball .svg, and put WP:DBZ or something like that over it --Lie! 16:09, 30 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You're sure? Its purely fan-made, you can tell by looking at the original image. If this is violating copyright, might as well include this Simpsons doughnut for a speedy. Lord Sesshomaru
There's a really, really, really large difference between a cartoon donut with pink glaze and sprinkles and a VERY VERY LARGE and from what I remember fairly accurate character model, which is a copyrighted character. I'd really like to see Fox enforce a copyright on all cartoon drawings of donuts-- although enforcing copyright on say, Homer Simpson would be very simple --Longing.... 18:37, 30 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Let's not exaggerate the case, shall we? Whether it be an exact doughnut from the Simpsons' or the fan-drawn face off a robot from Dr. Slump & Dragon Ball, I see little having to do with a potential copyright problem. Can someone provide a link to the wiki-rule that can verify L's claim? Lord Sesshomaru
Okay, let's drop it and move on. Lord Sesshomaru

He's an OBVIOUS sock, please block him, and when you do please put an indef blocked template on his userpage so that I know. Thanks. --User:Atomic Religione

I've already blocked him. Don't bother with the template. WP:DENY applies here. --Deskana (banana) 18:32, 30 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see why it's important, but you can if you want. --Deskana (banana) 18:38, 30 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Is Davina Kotulski notable? I already slapped a coi tag on it due to the username, and am fairly it's not copyright. I think the person is notable but would like a second person checking. -WarthogDemon 18:34, 30 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Boys seem to be getting into an editwar again. Could you come and put your foot down on this[1]. In my mind, the passage added is of low significance and do not belong in the article...--Alexia Death 14:34, 30 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Given that I've been involved in the writing of that section, I do not feel it's appropriate for me to take administrative action regarding it. Feel free to make a request at WP:RFPP. --Deskana (banana) 18:52, 30 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Username change

You just changed my username - which I am very grateful for - but the edits under my previous name, Algebra man, have not been reattributed to my new account. Username changes are intensive on the server. They cause Special:Watchlist and Special:Log to lag and can sometimes lock down the database (the slaves desynchronise from the master, apparently). It takes a while for your contributions to catch up occasionally. I checked just now, and it's all fine. :-) --Deskana (banana) 22:53, 30 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've just realized something, doesn't this qualify as a disruptive username? I've heard about the blocked vandal User:Zarbon, the same person who vandalized Dragon Ball wiki under the name Prince Zarbon and was suspected of being WikiStar according to a recent CU report. Lord Sesshomaru

Re: deleted userpage

Hi! Ummm... I've been checking his contribs as well. I know I have the right account. If you check the logs, the account was created in Jan, which is about right. However, somehow, he's got all his past contribs to reflect to the new username User:AVTN. I also noticed in the logs for User:Vagish that an admin User:Cecropia has renamed[2] the user, Vagish, to User:AVTN. Could this be a possible cause? Thanks for the quick reply, btw. aJCfreak yAk 12:29, 1 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Okay. So is there any way of retrieving the contents of Vagish's page now or has it been completely and totally lost? And man, you are quick. :D aJCfreak yAk 12:32, 1 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well, if it's not too much trouble and only if it does not violate any policies/guidelines of WP, could we retrieve it? He (Vagish) wishes to make a return and he wants the content from his old userpage. I dunno why he wants it... But he asked me and I asked Riana and here I am, asking you. Would that be ok? aJCfreak yAk 14:59, 1 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I'll let him know.... Actually, he should be able to figure it out when he next visits my talk page. :) Anyways, you're a blessing. Take care. aJCfreak yAk 15:05, 1 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ummm... So sorry to bother you again, but apparently he's used subpages. If and when you do have the time to spare, could you please restore these pages - User:Vagish/Tabs, User:Vagish/VandalismStats, User:Vagish/ToDoList, User:Vagish/Stats, User:Vagish/Articles and User:Vagish/Vandalism. I guess this is really asking too much - I can imagine the kind of workload you must have in front of you. But if it isn't too much trouble, please could you restore these pages when you do have the time? Thanks a lot. aJCfreak yAk 15:13, 1 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sure. Will ask him to get in touch with you. aJCfreak yAk 15:18, 1 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again. I know its been a while and I should've messaged you earlier. Vagish has said that he doesn't need the old pages resurrected again. I'm sorry, it's all a misunderstanding caused by me. He asked me if it is possible to restore the content and I guess I just got carried away. So sorry to have been a bother. Btw, are there any policy guidelines on the restoring of deleted userpages? I know that restoring content from deleted articles is a strong no-no, but how about userpages? Jus wondering. Thanks again... and sorry again. aJCfreak yAk 23:17, 14 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Username change guideline

Deskana, would you mind moving the proposed guideline out of your userspace? The conventions we follow for editing things in others' userspace are more restrictive than those for project space. In the past, I've found some are reluctant to edit something in my userspace even when I invite them to do so.--Chaser - T 14:14, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

De jure people shouldn't be afraid to, but de facto I think you're right. I'll move it. --Deskana (banana) 14:43, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

For no reason I am going to refer to you as Captain Deskana. --User:Atomic Religione

Deskana was always prounced "desk-arn-ah" in my head, but "desk-ann-ah" seems to be a more popular pronunciation. I don't mind which you choose. Besides, it doesn't matter when very few people call me by Deskana in real life :-) --Deskana (banana) 01:09, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I say "Des Kah Nah" personally. I thought it was Japanese when I first saw it, due to the 'kana' part --L--
Ok, good... I'm glad my brain agrees with yours. I realized after I asked that that you, being British, probably pronounce banana as ban-arn-ah instead of bah-nann-ah, and so it would rhyme. :) Pinball22 13:54, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings,

You had looked at this article earlier from my request on Requests for page protection.

I would like to request that the article be evaluated for semi-protection. A list of the major vandalism this article has had is listed on the Disccusion Page.

Many users are helping feverishly to make this article a great source of information but are starting to feel dejected having vandalism be a constant problem.

Thanks for your help and time.--Knighthammer 03:45, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Deskana is asleep right now afaik. They're not online, so you're just going to have to wait for the RFPP --L-- 03:51, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've restored the thread that you removed from WT:RFA. Even if it was started by a troll, I think some interesting and relevant points were being raised in the discussion, which had not finished. WaltonOne 14:48, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fine, but why keep the trolling in? If you want to make a point, you can do it without leaving the trolling in, surely. --Deskana (banana) 14:50, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I don't necessarily think the original comment was trolling - I agree that it seemed a little out-of-context, but it was a legitimate point, probably made by someone who was less familitar with the RfA process than we are. Certainly that quote from Jimbo seems to be repeated ad nauseam to the point that most RfA regulars are heartily sick of it, but the user who posted it wasn't necessarily aware of that. I don't quite understand why everyone (not just you) seems so eager to label the comment as trolling. WaltonOne 14:56, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
They posted it all over Wikipedia, if you check their contributions. They appear to be trying to make a point, and a very misguided one at that. I've dealt with a lot of trolls, and no offense, but I'm seldom wrong when I suspect someone. --Deskana (banana) 14:57, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you're probably right. Do you think the full quote should be redacted from the discussion, then, to save space? WaltonOne 15:03, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Personally, I'd refactor the thread so it makes no mention of that user's comments at all, but simply removing it and replacing with (trolling removed) should suffice. --Deskana (banana) 15:04, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Pleaxe don't. As a bureaucrat, it would be more appropriate if you don't micromanage things on RfA talk pages, and deleting threads is a bad idea to start with. And "I'm seldom wrong when I suspect someone" is silly coming from a bureaucrat (you should have better explanations than "trust me, I know what I am doing").
More to the point, the troll posted that text on WT:RfA and Wikipedia talk:Administrator's noticeboard. I do agree that's ranting to some extent, but deleting it (again, in your position) appears just silly, a bureaucrat censoring naive anon posts. Especially that the anon's post has its point. Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 15:18, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry, I don't think of myself as a bureaucrat removing discussions, I think of myself as a user removing discussions. You're probably right that I ought to distance myself from the discussions a bit more. But I still doubt this guy was a naive anon, he knew exactly all the right places to post it to get maximal coverage... and he knew about a quote that wouldn't be common knowledge for an anon. --Deskana (banana) 15:32, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You are right, the guy was not a naive anon. He was however somewhat confused about the whole thing although well meaning. The big point I am trying to make is that deleting posts should not be taken lightly in my view. Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 16:45, 4 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough, I don't blame you for believing the user to be a troll or sockpuppet of some variety, as that's what the evidence suggested at first. And I'm sorry for starting a big argument over this. I don't totally agree with Oleg Alexandrov's post above - I don't really think this is anything to do with your position as a bureaucrat - but I do agree with him that the anon made a legitimate point, which s/he has now explained further in the thread. They won't believe me that copyright violations aren't allowed on Wikipedia. It is certain that the article is a copyvio of this website, but they've tried to make me believe they are the "Foundation manager". And, unbelievably they've even implied "legal action", for a speedy delete. Simply astonishing. I've asked for your help, because for some reason I always remember your username and you're an admin. Please help. Thanks. Onnaghar (speak.work) 20:04, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank You. Independent editors are a virtue. Onnaghar (speak.work) 20:15, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure he was threatening legal action, I think you may have misunderstood him. I think he was saying he'd get his lawyer to verify to you that he owns the permission to the text. This is exactly what the OTRS permissions queue was made for. Luckily for you, I have access to that queue. I just asked him to e-mail the queue if he still wishes his text to be used, and released under GFDL. Basically, all resolved :-) --Deskana (banana) 20:18, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Deskana, it's great to be editing Wikipedia again.

You probably are wondering why I have been absent from Wikipedia for some length of time. The short answer is that my family and I are moving from New Zealand to Australia. I'm not entirely sure when I'll be able to resume editing full time again, but it will happen :).

Hope everything's going well with you, Yuser31415 23:54, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It would have been helpful if you actually told me why you kept removing the title. I had no idea, but thanks now nobody can contact me, great work.--Southern Texas 19:19, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You were given two or three reasons multiple times. It's nobody's fault but your own that you ignored them --Lucid 19:23, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I am not blaming anybody. I find you two to be very incivil to me right now. I did read the summaries and I had no idea what buttons you were talking about until you wrote on my talk page that in some computers the edit button was covered up there is no problem I will leave it off now but next time I would like a clear explanation from the start I am busy right now.--Southern Texas 19:27, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Again, you were given multiple explanations from the start. Even ignoring them (and it is ignoring, considering how obvious it is you were reading the history), you shouldn't have continued to add it AFTER YOU WERE ASKED NOT TO, without even making an attempt to communicate with others. --Lucid 19:30, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Beleive it or not, I'm going to come to Southern's defense here... when I read the edit summaries, I had no clue as to what buttons you were referring to or what the problem was. Even reading the link that L provided didn't explain to me what the problem was except for the fact that somebody didn't like it. So, I like S.T., wasn't sure what the problem was until Deskana explained it in more detail... and looking at the history, this detailed explanation wasn't provided until he was blocked.Balloonman 19:42, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
At no point did I block him, nor would it have been appropriate. I used to find that people would trust my experience, but it seems people would rather argue nowadays. --Deskana (banana) 19:43, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You did block him from editing his page... and I'm not arguing, I'm just pointing out (as a neutral observer--in fact one who has reason to be hostile to Southern Texas---he had quite a few choice words for me just 3 days ago garnering numerous warnings on his talk page) that the objections were not clear to me. You and L may have thought you were conveying your point and reason for your request, but as an outsider, I couldn't see what the problem was.Balloonman 19:47, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
And the fact that someone doesn't like it is enough to at least take a step back, not revert it, especially when it comes from an editor with far more experience than you have. Honestly, he's lucky he wasn't blocked, that was some pretty dedicated disruption. Not to mention the fact that "even after it was pointed out" he STILL continued to not only readd it, but also remove comments about it. --Lucid 19:50, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)You're implying something I don't appreciate. I stopped everyone from editing his talk page, so that he'd accept there was a problem. And it worked, he's agreed to keep it off, whereas he was editing before. Frankly, if someone reverts one of my edits saying there was a problem, I don't revert it saying there's no problem, or that nobody else sees a problem. I ask them what the problem is. I probably could have explained myself better, but there was absolutely no excuse for Southern Texas reverting us that much. --Deskana (banana) 19:52, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
L, you are correct... I missed one of Deskana's edits when I was reviewing the history. Somehow, my review went straight from the detailed explaination to the block of the page. I missed the edit where S.T. deleted the explaination and added the title back. I missed it both when the mini war was going on and in my review of the events ;-) My apologies.Balloonman 19:55, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It was on my talk page and when a orange message pops up and I see, " rm giant text. dear lord! talk pages are for communicating with other users, not for giant multicoloured text... it's bad enough on your userpage" I see this as a personal problem. If anything was left on the talk page I didn't see it until the last revert. The reasoning was not explained well and when it was, I agreed to keep it off. The page protection was not at all necessary.--Southern Texas 20:18, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Really, now? Then why did you keep reverting up until I protected the page, not stating any sort of intention to stop? That's exactly what protection was made for. --Deskana (banana) 20:20, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't stop because it was never explained properly to begin with. I saw this from the start as a personal problem. What you should have done was left me a message on my talk page telling me my I should remove the title.--Southern Texas 20:32, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Southern, you had my support until I saw this edit. You deleted Deskana's reasoned explanation that demonstrated the concern wasn't simply a matter of personal preference. Up until that point, I would have been on your side. But the fact that you deleted Deskana's note indicates that you saw it.Balloonman 20:35, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
L/Deskana, I tried something on Southern Texas page that might work as a nice compromise. Can you take a look at it and confirm that it won't cause any problems?Balloonman 20:40, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No comment. I avoid people that personally cause me frustration or to lose my temper, and Southern Texas is one of those people. I'm not going back to his talk page unless I have a really compelling reason to. --Deskana (banana) 20:57, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
ROFLMAO---I understand... in fact the only reason why I was there was because I hadn't taken him off of my watch list after he a few more than choice words for me earlier this week.Balloonman 21:00, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Lea Thompson

Why did you remove the image of Lea Thompson from her page? Does Wikipedia have a problem with fair use pictures? The picture of her in Howard the Duck seems just as legal -- why did you remove the one and not the other? Thanks Jm307 07:33, 11 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use criteria specifically prohibit fair use images from being used to illustrate living people. By including it in the infobox, it's being used to illustrate Lea Thompson herself. The other images are illustrating her roles. There's a subtle but important difference. --Deskana (banana) 13:55, 11 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see. Thanks.Jm307 02:43, 12 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Question

Hi Deskana its Me DBZROCKS, I have a question about Dragon Ball (artifact). Someone has changed all instances of Shenlong to Shenron. Shenlong is the way the Dragon Ball Wikiproject is spelling the eternal dragon so could you change all instances of Shenron Back to Shenlong, please? DBZROCKSIts over 9000!!! 23:25, 11 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It might take me a while, I'm not sure if WP:AWB is compatible with Vista, and I'd need to download it, too. --Deskana (banana) 23:32, 11 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Its ok I can do it manually (its gonna be a looooooooong night) DBZROCKSIts over 9000!!! 23:33, 11 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I just used my browser's find feature to do it. Much easier. :-) --Deskana (banana) 23:36, 11 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a bunch. DBZROCKSIts over 9000!!! 23:36, 11 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
While you're answering some questions, I asked a few to sysop Chrislk02 and he never responded back. From what I'm honestly interpreting, he's ignoring me on purpose because of something (three times I alerted him not to miss that thread). Then again, maybe he's too busy to answer them? It's strange, could you perhaps answer those questions there for me? If you're able to, please hit me at my talk page. Thanks. Lord Sesshomaru 07:40, 12 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I promise I'll check into this soon, but I'm rather busy with work at the minute. --Deskana (banana) 00:43, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Need OTRS help

Deskana, would you mind please looking up the OTRS ticket for this image? Basically I'm wanting to find out the terms (was it only this image, or were other images included in the same release) and ideally I'm hoping to find the point of contact address at PETA for further release of promotional images from this campaign. Feel free to e-mail me if you like. Thanks for your time... Videmus Omnia Talk 13:37, 12 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I will e-mail you. --Deskana (banana) 00:43, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Got an e-mail from a PETA attorney today, looks like we may have a problem. I'll let you know once I have more details. Bottom line is that it looks like PETA may only hold the distribution rights, not the original copyright. Videmus Omnia Talk 00:51, 14 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Barnstar!

Why thank you! I will place this on my awards page soon. Feel free to do it yourself if you like... you can make it look tidy too if you like. I've been meaning to tidy it for ages :-) --Deskana (banana) 00:44, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Flagging bots

Hey,

When flagging bots, please change the template to BRFAA from the old BRFA before substing, to avoid the parserfunctions being substituted, otherwise it ends up being a bit messy.

Thanks! Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 01:55, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Okie. --Deskana (banana) 01:56, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Checkuser

Your Checkuser flag is now active, you're already listed on meta:CheckUser, would you please subscribe to checkuser-l, email [email protected] so that the listadmins know you're allowed on the mailing list (the list may contain confidential information), and also contact an op for access to #wikimedia-checkuser. Thank you, --M/ 13:25, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I've already started about getting access to the mailing list. I'll get onto someone about access to the channel. Thanks again. --Deskana (banana) 13:27, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Congratulations. :-) ElinorD (talk) 14:29, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Good show. For better or worse, it looks like the workload for this area is apt to increase. Raymond Arritt 14:37, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You made me laugh

I was reading through the 4/15/2006 Articles for Creation page and hit Megadeuce and chuckled. Your reason for decline was perfect. :). By the way, please help out with the AFC backlog elimination drive that's going on through this Wednesday. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs)/(e-mail) 22:49, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, that brings back memories. That was shortly before I became an admin... hehe. I doubt I can help with AfC since I'm working, but if I can I will. :-) --Deskana (banana) 22:50, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Pantomime

It's me again. My interest in the subjet reently brought me to the article on Pantomime. As I read it, I realized that the article never really gives an appropriate definition and is not 'too the point' enough. What are your thoughts? -- Vitus Werdegast 03:26, 14 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I suppose it depends what you mean. I read the article and I felt it summarised it in the lead quite well. What specifically is your complaint about it? --Deskana (banana) 20:40, 14 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for changing my username

All in a day's work for you, I'm sure, but thank you for being there anyway :-) —Verrai 04:36, 14 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A case about User:Digwuren

Hi Deskana,

A month ago you blocked User:Digwuren for WP:TE and edit warrying, then unblocked him saying that "this user is unblocked to participate in RFC and/or mediation cases ONLY. reblock if user abuses this trust".

Since then nothing changed, as this user keeps his edit warrying and incivility. A WP:ANI entry was created recently here, so your input there will be greatly appreciated :)

Cheers, Grafikm (AutoGRAF) 12:13, 14 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please note I never blocked him. I'm sure you're aware of this, and the above mistake was simply a slip of the finger but I just wanted to make sure you know :-). I'll try to check this out tomorrow, I'm exhausted right now. --Deskana (banana) 01:44, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
