Ruth Lawrence[edit]

I notice that you edited the Ruth Lawrence article and changed the Oxford entrance examination in mathematics to the St Hugh's College, Oxford entrance examination in mathematics. Do you have a good reason for making this change ? I am fairly certain that entrance examinations at Oxford are administered by the University, not by the individual colleges (this is definitely true for Cambridge). The reference in the article to 530 candidates supports the case for it being a University-wide examination, as a single college would not have this many mathematics applicants in one year. I'm not sure. The St. Hugh's webpage appears to refer to the university examination. So perhaps I made the change in error. I'll look into it. Danielfong 20:15, 17 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]


Update. The Examination papers are written as part of the interview process. They last (currently) 2 and 1/2 hours. They are written at, or for, the college that one has applied to, however the examination is the same for all candidates each year. It is quite possible that there were 530 candidates, since this would include all prospective applicants to St. Hugh's college for every school of Mathematics. St. Hugh's is rather famous for math, so it is quite believable that there would be a large number of prospectus, and the numbers seem to work out with the admission rate.

Professors[edit]

Daniel, several of these people I have known for almost twenty five years, and I am a professor myself. Most have made solid but not outstanding contributions typical of what you find of professors at nearly any large research university. Thus, not passing the "Average professor test". Just because they are your favourites doesn't count. Write an article about them establishing why YOU think they are especially notable, see if it survives VfD, then feel free to link them again. I can't really find a reference to any average professor test. The professors I've mentioned are at least outstanding among Dalhousians, and I and my friends have been in situtations where outside of Atlantic Canada, the region is known for these particular researchers. I'm not sure it's really fair to compare most of these guys with Princeton professors, but I guess I can agree with your deletion of Professors without a wikipedia page. Jondel, I would like to leave the discussion as per that particular article up to somebody else. I'm currently getting a lot of media coverage right now, having just graduated, and so I have a particularly biased viewpoint. Go ahead and remove the dispute tag if you want.

You created a redirect at Gabriel Carroll which points to nothing. Please don't do that. Write a solid stub at that location instead, and somebody else will flesh out an article later.
