Windows Update restart

[edit]

Windows update starts a countdown which restarts the computer when it is completed, even if unnoticed. I am adding this back in.

Both my Vista and Windows 7 do it. Recently, twice while trying to play Starcraft II online, once while trying to type up an essay. I have asked other people I know. There are numerous websites on the net mentioning it, and giving instructions on how to fix it, but they all require registry editing to stop, which I'm wary to touch. For proof of it in Vista,

Okay, my bad... Apologies. The forced restart has never happened to me, so I assumed it was a matter of confusion between Vista/7. Still, a shutdown timer does not occur immediately after updating, not on my vista install at least, and from what your comment and the article you linked imply to me, this happens if the nag box is not noticed and thus not interacted with, or if the restart is postponed repeatedly for an extended period of time. I recommend setting it to automatically download but not auto-install updates, so you know when it's going to be doing that (this has the advantage of letting you reject the occasional package you might not want as well). =)
- Hang on, an essay? Surely you would have seen the dialog.. So it does restart right away normally? :/ Could you try changing the settings as mentioned and see if that results in the behavior I see? Thanks for being patient with me :P
