Welcome

Hello and welcome to Wikipedia! Hope you like it here, and stick around.

Here are some tips to help you get started:

Good luck!

Howdy

Hey Chad, small world huh, I see you yesterday and then bump into you on the internet. My Wikipedia usage has actually gone way down lately. I switch to working at Wiktionary for a while (I actually an administrator at Wiktionary) but even that has lost some of it's gloss for me.

Anyway, I look forward into bumping into you more around here from time to time.

Cheers,

Kevin Rector (talk) 02:52, Jun 3, 2005 (UTC)

Another welcome

Welcome! (We can't say that loud/big enough!)

I noticed your entry on the new user log and wanted to drop by and say hello. When I saw on your user page that you have an interest in theology, I knew I should say hello! (Check my user page to find out why.)

Here are a few links you might find helpful:

Categories

wikipedia:categorization is slightly controversial, but a basic principle which is generally agreed on is that articles should not be in a category and in a parent category. As an example, category:Independent Colleges of Southern California is a subcategory of category:Universities and colleges in California, so a school categorized under the subcat is automatically under parent cat. The most precise category is the desired one. Personally, I think the category system is extremely valuable but flawed. It should allow for different attributes to be handled separately, i.e. Independent and SoCal. Anyway, that is the policy so don't be put out if they undo your work. I've made the same "mistake" quite a few times. Cheers, -Willmcw 23:50, Jun 26, 2005 (UTC)

User categorization

Greetings, Chad S. Wrye! I've noticed that you've already categorized your user page in Category:Wikipedians in Tennessee. Would you consider removing your name from the Wikipedia:Wikipedians/Tennessee page? The categories are replacing the lists and that page will be deleted when all users have been removed. Thanks!!

For more information, please see Wikipedia:User categorisation and Category:Wikipedians by location. -- Roby Wayne Talk • Hist 07:13, 8 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

WikiChristian

Hi Chad,

I noticed that you are Christian. Come and take a look at www.wikichiristian.org and consider contributing. It is still small and has very few users. I'm praying that God helps the site to grow and become a forum for Christians to write and read about all aspects of Christianity. It is not meant to be a copy of wikipedia. It is not meant to be purely an encyclopedia. For any given topic, it will hopefully contain a short summary of the topic followed by links to many sub-articles - some containing simple facts; some sharing experiences; some explaining a particular viewpoint and so on.

Take for example the article on grace. It has various "Definition and explanation" articles explaining the meaning of grace. It has a few "Articles / opinions" about grace. It has links for "Quotes' about grace and links to "Songs about grace". The site is also meant to be a resource site containing information about Christian texts, literature, art, music, radio, television and internet.

Take a look at the example article on the song Shout to the Lord. It has links to information about the song, lyrics and chords to the song and links for comments or opinions to be expressed about the song.

The site also intends to explain the history of important events in Christianity. Take a look at The Reformation section. This has links for "Overview" articles, "Opinion" articles, "Quotes" and "Travel" stories.

The site intends to be a reference about major (and minor) figures in the Bible, the early church and today. Take a look at John Stott. It contains "Overview" and "Opinion" articles. It contains texts of "Talks" given by John Stott and links to "Books" by John Stott.

In summary, I suppose, that my hope is that WikiChristian becomes a major reference point for Christians and non-Christians to go to find about any issue related to Christianity. I don't believe that this should be carbon-copy of wikipedia. It should resemble it in some ways, but in other ways, it should be quite different in structure and evolution. I realize that there are different views about different topics - and accordingly, there should always be the opportunity for a person to write his personal view under the "Opinion and articles" section of any given page.

I would love you to take a look at wikichristian and contribute. If you don't wish to contribute, would you consider visiting it's world wide directory of churches we are setting up and entering your church into the database. The point of the database is to state the location of a church with the service times and add a brief description of the church. You can take a look for example at: Church Directory -> Australia -> South Australia -> Adelaide -> St Matthew's Anglican Church

If you don't wish to contribute to WikiChristian, you could consider one of the other wikis related to Christianity that have been set up by other people. These include: Theopedia, Compass or OrthoxWiki.

Thanks

Vanity Guidelines

Thank you for calling my attention to the Vanity Guidelines. As I have no desire to write for Wikipedia in any field in which I lack unique or unusual expertise, as the fields in which I possess this expertise are ones in which I have published in the peer reviewed literature and as Wikipedia promotes a style of writing that references the peer reviewed literature that pertains to the topic under discussion it appears that there is nothing I can contribute to Wikipedia. Male Wikipedians

Hi! I noticed you had placed yourself in Category:Male Wikipedians, and use babel boxes. Just so you know, I've just made the template {{Subst:{{User:UBX/male}}. Feel free to use it and/or edit it! — Asbestos | Talk (RFC) 19:00, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed you are categorized as a Wikipedian by alignment. If you are in to userboxes, there are now infoboxes available using a standard template. See the alignment category page for details. xaosflux Talk/CVU 18:29, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Project invite

Hi Chad, you don't know me, but I see you got your MA in in Industrial/Organizational Psychology just recently. Congrats! Actually that's why I'm writing. I picked your name up from your catagory. Anyway, I'm recruitng OrgDev talent for a mini-project Wikipedia:WikiProject Fast OrgDev Advisory on Userpages, which will write an advisory document in support of the new Wikipedia:Proposed policy on userboxes. In the larger sense, it's an small experiment to see if OrgDev talent can be concentrated for internal use here at Wikipedia -- of course, a lot of folks don'e want to get into that and just want to edit articles, and that's fine. But if you wanted to take a quick look at the project page you'd be most welcome. Herostratus 08:18, 12 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:NorthwestNazareneUniversityLogo.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, consider reading fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. No Guru 18:37, 25 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Psychology wiki

Hi Chad I see that you have been contributing to psychology articles on Wikipedia. Just to let you know that we are working on an academic psychology wiki for our professional community and their users. This can be found at: [1] We would really welcome your input and ask you to join us. We already have over 7000 pages up. Orientation, help and community portal pages are available off of this link. Please pass the good news onto anyone you feel would be interested. We would be particularly interested to have you on board to help us get the organizational psychology area structuread and underway. Lifeartist 15:51, 14 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Category help

Hi, I was wondering if youd could offer some help, please? I want to add the category: swing dance line to the lindy hop article, as lindy is part of the swing dance family, but i was wondering if that worked, seeing as how the lindy hop article is currently listed in the lindy hop category...? What do you think? Ta. PlainJane 06:25, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! I was waiting to see if someone would complain... // Habj 11:57, 25 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I wanted to say thank you for taking this topic to the RfC, I didn't even know it existed. Hopefully some sort of something will be sorted out....--Will.i.am 03:54, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! Thanks for the interesting question and for your trust in my ability to answer it, but I am afraid I don't know much about the topic to be prescriptive. At first sight, it seems that the question depends on how the name Lindi hop is used. If the name is used to contrast this type of dancing to other dance forms, I would say that it is a proper name. In broad terms, proper names tend to be unique in their context and are normally capitalised (you may want to think of the difference between God and god), so when Lindi hop is used to uniquely identify a type of dancing, I think it needs a capital L. By contrast, if you use lindi hop to refer to various instances of this dance, it seems to function like a generic name, much like the word classical music or rock. In these cases, I think that it would be awkward to capitalise the word. I don't know if all this makes sense, but what I am trying to say is that both spellings seem "correct" depending on the context. However, in the interest of thoroughness, you may need to google the two usages and check if this theoretical explanation can be confirmed empirically. TheArchon 12:40, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Church of the Nazarene WikiProject

Hi Chad, long time no talk. I have been gone from Wikipedia for a while now. But now I'm back for at least a while. I just started Wikipedia:WikiProject Church of the Nazarene. If you're interested in helping out with that it'd be great. Also if you know any other Nazarene Wikipedian you could pass the word on. Peace. Kevin Rector (talk) 06:07, 1 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Holiness Wikipedians

I started the category, then I left because I thought there was too many categories on my userpage. I downsized everything on my page. I only left a few categories. It's probably for the better that you nominated it for deletion. Thanks. Aaрон Кинни (t) 23:28, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Lindy hop

I'm quite happy to help - I'll look into this. --BarryC (talk) Uncyc 11:24, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. In everyday usage there's no capitalization, a few exceptions aside (Lindy Hop being one, for historical reasons). Yet dance professionals may use other conventions in specialized usage. JackLumber. 14:07, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Cswrye,
Thanks a lot for asking, but unfortunately I am not the best person to comment on that, I have only a basic knowledge of the usage of capitalisation in English, not being a native speaker. I am particualarly unsecure in capitalising words or phrases where the orginal word was a name (e.g. Lindy), but the meaning has been changed to a common noun. I have never come across editing rules for these cases. I hope some other people can help, maybe people who work in publishing and editing? Lgriot 10:59, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Cswrye, I will have to answer in the same way as Lgriot on this. Thanks a lot for asking, but I also think people into publishing are better here, or, eventually, people who teach English to native speakers (I do research mainly on Uralic languages). Trondtr 16:53, 10 August 2006 (UTC).[reply]

Should all the categories be in plural? What is the convention? Sucrine 19:06, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cswrye Ref. Unique

I see what you are saying and will leave it that way, but I believe you are using the word "unique" a little more absolute than I was intending. Unique is defined in the dictionary the way you are using it "only, one of a kind". It is also defined as; u·nique [ yoo neek ] special: different from others in a way that makes somebody or something special and worthy of note. http://encarta.msn.com/dictionary_/unique.html

I believe this does make us, as Nazarenes, different from others in a way that is noteworthy. Any Church in todays world that has a stance against the social drinking of alcohol is Unique, in my opinion. Saying that, I understand where you are coming from now and did appreciate your response to this issue. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.170.102.17 (talkcontribs) .

Greetings! When I made the AfD nomination on List of colleges and universities in Washington, I was looking at the proposed deletion and the reasoning given there. Once I saw it in the context of other lists for colleges in the US, I see how it fits together into that whole array of lists. I've also seen some of the other states' lists and see where this list is headed. Accordingly, I have withdrawn my nomination, and hopefully an admin will close the discussion with a speedy keep soon. Good luck with your continued work on the list! —C.Fred (talk) 04:54, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Self-report inventory

Hi. I'm the guy that wrote the self-report inventory page, and I noticed that you removed a POV phrase from it. I created the page a week ago as a sort-of space saver so that I could reference self-report inventories as such without having to explain what they were in the couple of pages I've been working on/am planning to write. I got that far, which pretty much covers the basics, then I really couldn't go any further. As you're the first person to come by and say anything about it, and I noticed from reading your bio that you have an interest in psychometrics, I was wondering if you could give me a hand fleshing the entry out. Any suggestions that you want to leave on the article's talk page or my talk page would be welcomed.Dlmccaslin 17:23, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No, you didn't step on any toes. Your background is interesting. Most of my work has dealt with the more active side of behavioral health, so I haven't done much testing, but I did research using the BDI and I'm a big fan of the Cognitivists, and they seem to use a lot of testing. As for the article, I'm glad someone read over it. Basically, if you have any ideas for polishing it, or any more information/sources to add, that would be great. Thanks!Dlmccaslin 03:45, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal

I really like it. I think you have a firm grasp on why Wikipedian cats are potentially useful, and the detailed examples follow through on your thesis. The only modification that I would make would be to reword things so that AWWDMBJAWGCAWAIFDSPBATDMTD isn't left out. They are among the largest groups on CFD, and they seem to be useful. --M@rēino 22:56, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Psychology template

Hi Cswrye,
Nice work on the psychology project! I was thinking, when you add the template to an article's talk page, how about using the form, {{WikiProject Psychology|class=|importance=}} ? That way, there will be a little less typing when it's time to enter the ratings. Rfrisbietalk 17:35, 2 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

East Coast Swing

Hi. I saw your contribution to the East Coast Swing AfD. Since the article's been kept and improved, I was wondering if maybe you could add some more information on the history and significance of the dance so that the article is more than just a how-to guide. Thanks! --Kerowyn Leave a note 00:14, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just a brief overview would be fine, maybe with the caveat that there are many interpretations. Thanks for your help. --Kerowyn Leave a note 06:31, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I'm confused. I've tried searching for East Coast Swing and actually can't find it. Did it get deleted by accident after all or did it move? Or am I having connection issues?--Will.i.am 00:41, 20 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Grammar Nazi/Dance capitalism

Well to be honest, I didn't list myself as a grammar nazi. It was a case of vandalism by the user Deuxhero after I requested he run a spell check on his edits. About the capitalization issue, I honestly don't know. I'd guess that it wouldn't be capitalized but I don't have too much to back that up with. Ryan 03:51, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RE:Grammar Nazi

I'll just put in my two cents here. I think that if one is just naming a general type of dance, such as the waltz, then it does not have to be in capitals, but if one were to name a more specific type of dance, such as, I don't know, the Waterdance or something like that, then it would need to be capitalized. By the way, if I am a grammar Nazi, I would be more like one of the citizens of Germany than Hitler, if you know what I mean. - Bagel7 07:17, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
