RC Patrol-related Proposals in the 2016 Community Wishlist Survey
Greetings Recent Changes Patrollers!
This is a one-time-only message to inform you about technical proposals related to Recent Changes Patrol in the 2016 Community Wishlist Survey that I think you may be interested in reviewing and perhaps even voting for:
- Adjust number of entries and days at Last unpatrolled
- Editor-focused central editing dashboard
- "Hide trusted users" checkbox option on watchlists and related/recent changes (RC) pages
- Real-Time Recent Changes App for Android
- Shortcut for patrollers to last changes list
Further, there are more than 20 proposals related to Watchlists in general that you may be interested in reviewing. (and over 260 proposals in all, across many aspects of wikis)
Thank you for your consideration. Please note that voting for proposals continues through December 12, 2016.
Note: You received this message because you have transcluded {{User wikipedia/RC Patrol}} (user box) on your user page. Since this message is "one-time-only" there is no opt out for future mailings.
Best regards, Stevietheman — Delivered: 01:09, 8 December 2016 (UTC)

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- Users who have Yahoo email addresses could not use Special:EmailUser to send emails. This has now been fixed. Emails will now come from a @wikimedia.org address. Users who get an email from you will still reply to your email address and be able to see it. [1]
- You can now see how many categories and pages there are in the categories in Special:TrackingCategories. This is to help you find pages that could need attention. [2]
- Markup colours for reviewed and pending revisions in the page history and recent changes and logs now match Wikimedia standard colours. The "You have a new message on your talk page" notification will have a slightly different colour. [3]
Problems
- Because of work on cross-wiki watchlists global renaming is not working. The plan is to turn it on again on 16 December. Global renaming was turned off for a while in late November and early December as well. [4]
Changes this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 13 December. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 14 December. It will be on all wikis from 15 December (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on December 13 at 20:00 (UTC). See how to join.

AfD wording
I think what you meant to say in the AfD on route 152 is Strong keep. "Speedy keep" is actually a technical term used when the nominator withdraws and nobody else wanted to delete the article (or when the nomination is in bad faith), A related term "Snow Keep" (from "a snowball's chance in Hell") means to close the debate because everyone obviously agrees. "Strong keep" is used to indicate deep conviction against opposition. I find it helpful at WP discussions to use our customary terminology , no matter how peculiar. I heartily agree with your view that there should be a consistent policy for keeping these, but alas the trend here at WP seems unfortunately to be otherwise. Maybe you'll be enough added weight to change it. DGG ( talk ) 21:14, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks DGG, I shall therefore change it, as the nomination wasn't in bad faith. I only did it because for the last three London bus route discussions, they were closed as keep and given the same reason for why they were needed to be deleted. When I have more time on my hands, I will start a discussion, or maybe even a project (Which Jcc seems to be willing to help out with, as per a previous discussion on my talk, apologies if i got the wrong impression) to create some sort of notability guidelines or work with WikiProject Buses to come up with notability guidelines for bus routes. I am quite fed up of the amount of alerts I see telling me that there is a deletion discussion about a bus route, and its time it stopped and we did something. Class455 (talk) 22:53, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
- There's a strategic problem with such discussions: you can not be sure that the proposal will succeed. If it does not, most of the remaining articles are likely to be deleted. That's why so many of our guidelines are unsettled--nobody wants to take the chance of a definitive loss. You have to judge very carefully before going ahead. My own preference is to be conservative with such proposals, and to instead argue it article by article, Nut if anyone thinks they have a good enough chance, they certainly can give it a try. DGG ( talk ) 23:11, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
- I see. When you say "argue it article per article" do you mean that if another one comes up for debate, shall I do the same thing as on this discussion? Class455 (talk) 06:39, 14 December 2016 (UTC)

Tech News
- Because of the holidays the next issue of Tech News will be sent out on 9 January 2017.
- The writers of the technical newsletter are asking for your opinion. Did you get the information you wanted this year? Did we miss important technical news in 2016? What kind of information was too late? Please tell us! You can write in your language. Thank you!
Recent changes
- Administrators and translation administrators can now use Special:PageLanguage on wikis with the Translate extension. This means you can say what language a page is in. The Translate extension will use that language as the source language when you translate. Previously this was always the wiki's default language. This was usually English. [5]
- Wikis connected to Wikidata can now use the parser function
{{#statements: }}
to get formatted data. You can also use{{#property: }}
to get raw data. You can see the difference between the two statements. There are also similar new functions in Lua. [6]
Problems
- Some abuse filters for uploaded files have not worked as they should. We don't know exactly which filters didn't work yet. This means some files that filters should have prevented from being uploaded were uploaded to the wikis. MediaWiki.org and Testwiki have been affected since 13 October. Commons and Meta have been affected since 17 October. Other wikis have been affected since 17 November. [7]
Changes this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week. There will be no new MediaWiki version next week either.
Meetings
- The next meeting with the VisualEditor team will be on 3 January at 20:00 (UTC). During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. See how to join.

London buses route 407
Please may you restore my London buses route 407 as it took a long time to make it. I saw similar articles that cover the same topics that I talked about. I brought this discussion up on the IRC webchat for Wikipedia. Look at these following articles:
If my article about the bus route 407 was deleted, these following articles listed above should also be deleted. If these articles above qualify to exist on Wikipedia, my article should also exist. These articles cover the same topics that I covered in my article. Thanks, Pkbwcgs (talk) 19:40, 20 December 2016 (UTC)
- Hello Pkbwcgs Simple answer is that some bus routes are notable, others are not. Also, you created an entirely new article rather than merge it with the redirect that was on the original page. I can't find much sources about route 407, so therefore it doesn't meet WP:GNG. Cruel, it may seem. I created an article when I was fairly inexperienced on route 434 but it was redirected as there was no evidence of notability. I did spend a lot of time on this, and as a result, I moved it to my user space. If you would like, I can cut and paste the content that's in the page history into an area of your user space. Also, the examples you've provided do have some sources available, so these pass GNG. I suggest you read and understand these guidelines, as that is why you find yourself being hauled to ANI. SvG clean-up
In the recent discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/IncidentArchive941#User:Fram you supported mass-deletion of all BLP articles created by SvG. The closing decision was that this should be done. I have started a page at User:Aymatth2/SvG clean-up for discussion / coordination of the deletion job. Your comments or suggestions would be welcome. Also, we urgently need volunteers with the technical skills to create a useable list of articles to be deleted. Any suggestions would be welcome. Your signature
Every RfA or large discussion allows me to nitpick about user's signatures, since I have a syntax highlighting gadget. It must be the web developer in me :) If you could kindly change your signature to the following:

That might've sounded a bit rash, apologies. I'm sure you can understand my annoyance though :) Basilbrush600 (talk) 02:55, 5 January 2017 (UTC)
- Basilbrush600 Apologies, I thought you were vandalising the page by changing the date of birth, but I've examined the page history and it seems an IP who edited earlier than you had in fact vandalised the page by changing the DOB to 1998, and covered it up with some other edits so it went undetected until now. So I will go and rectify that and clear up the vandalism. Thanks for telling me. Class455 (talk|stand clear of the doors!) 11:49, 5 January 2017 (UTC)

Kind request for help
Hi Class 455 and first of all: HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! You were so kind to contact me last year, when I was wrong with my note to Samtar...and that's why I now contact you. Samtar does not answer me any more - not at all and I have no idea why...I guess I explained politely and clear that I would appreciate his help - but not a single reaction.... In the meantime I completed my article in all aspects, everything is ready - I did the whol work in my sandbox, as I do it in German Wikipedia. But: I would be very greatful if you could just check it one time to see, if still something could be missing or wrong. It's my first edit in the English Wiki and of course I don't want to make toooooo many stupid mistakes. And - if it's ok, (what I hope and guess) could you move it and authorize it?? I have the status auf automatical corrector/autoconfirmed user in the German Wiki, but not in the English - so it would be great if you could help me here to carry on. And: where can I show the formatted version to you? I mean without saving it - just showing...? That's the point, I do not completely understand. How to work out such an article before publishing...not publically but in the sandbox? I cancel it after working it out - but how and where can I show it to you? It's long, detailed and with beautiful photographes - if you like, please have a look at the German version. It's about the German Painter Bruno Kurz. I know, painting is not your main topic - but perhaps you like it or could help me with this first english Version... Thank you VERY VERY MUCH in advance and sweet 17.... Pas de chat (talk) 16:26, 3 January 2017 (UTC)
- Hi Pas de chat. Thanks for getting in touch, and happy new year to you too. I've had a look at the article in your sandbox. Firstly Samtar has been a bit busy lately I've noticed with other things, but he seems to be back now. I'll leave him a talkback message so he is aware of the discussion. I think the best way to authorise the article would to move it to Draft:Bruno Kurz (the draft namespace)and submit it via The articles for creation process . However, as the article stands at the moment, i don't think it would pass WP:GNG and would be nominated for speedy deletion under criteria A7 if we put it straight into the main space. Reliable sources are really helpful to ensuring that the article is notable enough to be on Wikipedia. If you have any available, or if you can find them online (such as about his career or his studio), that would really help. if you need, I can check them for you to see if they are reliable. I can also help with how to cite sources, if you don't know how. You could also add some sources which are also on the German Wikipedia article (which i see there are quite a lot of) to the English Wiki article. To become autoconfirmed on the English Wikipedia, I believe you need to have performed 10 edits and your account must be 7 days (i think) old, which I think you now are autoconfirmed. So I will be able to help you with citing source, grammar and bring the article up to the standard of GNG, but unfortunately, I don't have much knowledge on art. Hope this helps. Class455 (talk|stand clear of the doors!) 16:46, 3 January 2017 (UTC)
My deepest apologies - I've been busy with lots of things, and I kept putting off having a look at the article. It needs some references, but then it should nearly be ready to go). Have a look at this page for help with referencing -- samtar talk or stalk 19:49, 3 January 2017 (UTC)
Hi Class 455 and Samtar! Thank you very much for your answer. Please don't worry - I did it ALL - all references, Sources, Links, Pictures, authorisation for the pictures - it's ready! But: I just would like to show it to you before putting it in the wikiworld... Where can I do this, just to show, not so save... Please - which kind of page (not this one, it's for talk only)? And the sandbox neither ...I am only elaborationg there, without saving...so WHERE can I show it to you? Thanks a lot in advance Pas de chat (talk) 15:21, 6 January 2017 (UTC)
Hi Class 455, Samtar helped me to edit it - he worte it's fine and now please have a look ( Bruno Kurz) - I cannot understand the complaints of missing proves...and it is 98% the same content/text/length like the German version, so from there I cannot include more..who suggests such a thing, without reading or compairing the articles..? I started to add some gallery Links (Sam cancelled them, don't know why) - There is everything mentioned, the awards, his education, his live shortly, of course all his exhibitions - it's so much, what is missing? ...I dont understand, and I am thankful for any hint , how to carry on? Thank you!! Pas de chat (talk) 12:25, 8 January 2017 (UTC)
- Hi Pas de chat, I believe the gallery was removed because it needed to be written in prose rather than illustrated, maybe Sam would be able to explain, but i believe it was per WP:USEPROSE. I don't really think anything is missing and the article, as it is, seems to be all good! Might just be a few grammar errors there and there but other than that, its all good! Sorry for the late reply, but I was rather shocked and saddened to learn that fellow editor and administrator JohnCD had sadly passed away. Class455 (talk|Stand clear of the doors!) 17:10, 8 January 2017 (UTC)
Hi Class 455, thank you VERY VERY much for your work and corrections!!! ( I learn the other rules in the English Wikiworld by your help. It's really very different...) But: I still see these tags, are they coming back automatically? Or is a person in the backyard making digital terror? I never experienced this before in the German Wiki and it'a sad...for the idea of Wiki and especially for poeple form other countries, trying to contribute to a world wide knowledge... Best best...Pas de chat (talk) 13:53, 9 January 2017 (UTC)

- Editors who use Firefox 50 might get logged out or fail to save their edits. This is because of a browser bug. Until this is fixed you can enter
about:config
in the address bar and setnetwork.cookie.maxPerHost
to 5000. Firefox 50 is the current version of the Firefox. [12]
Changes this week
- There is no new version of MediaWiki this week because of the Wikimedia Developer Summit.

You can check this 2 website about the Iphone 7 & 7 Plus information. Then why in iphone 7 itself information is allowed to put. 1. http://m.gsmarena.com/apple_iphone_7-8064.php 2. http://m.gsmarena.com/apple_iphone_7_plus-8065.php Who say don't have the Source? Do you check the SOURCE i save before i the saved page. Johnlyh77 (talk) 14:28, 14 January 2017 (UTC)
- Johnlyh77 2 things. 1. You didn't cite this source in your edit. 2. gsmarena is not a reliable source. Looks more like a fan site to me. Class455 (talk|stand clear of the doors!) 16:04, 14 January 2017 (UTC)

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- You can now upload WebP files to Commons. [13]
Problems
- video2commons was down for two weeks. This was because of a problem with Commons video transcoders. It is now back up. [14]
Changes this week
- There is a new magic word called
{{PAGELANGUAGE}}
. It returns the language of the page you are at. This can be used on wikis with more than one language to make it easier for translators. [15] - When an admin blocks a user or deletes or protects a page they give a reason why. They can now get suggestions when they write. The suggestions will be based on the messages in the dropdown menu. [16]
- You will be able to use
<chem>
to write chemical formulas. Before you could use<ce>
.<ce>
should be replaced by<chem>
. [17] - You now can add exceptions for categories which shouldn't be shown on Special:UncategorizedCategories. The list is at MediaWiki:Uncategorized-categories-exceptionlist. [18]
- The "Columns" and "Rows" settings will be removed from the Editing tab in Preferences. If you wish to keep what the "Rows" setting did you can add this code to your personal CSS:
#wpTextbox1 { height: 50em; }
You can change the number50
to make it look like you want to. [19] - Sometimes edits in MediaWiki by mistake are shown coming from private IP addresses such as 127.0.0.1. Edits and other contributions logged to these IP addresses will be blocked and shown the reason from MediaWiki:Softblockrangesreason. This should not affect most users. Bots and other tools running on Wikimedia Labs, including Tool Labs will receive a "blocked" error if they try to edit without being logged in. [20]
- When you edit with the visual editor categories will be on the top of the page options menu. [21]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 17 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 18 January. It will be on all wikis from 19 January (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on January 17 at 20:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Thanks...
... for removing that CSD tag; I take it you noticed the fact that I said I'd get back to it. I'm aware of the fact I need to find sources, it's just I'm in school and all the websites I need are blocked. All the best, Patient Zerotalk 14:07, 2 February 2017 (UTC)
- Patient Zero You're welcome, I think it might have been because the tagger had noticed the article had previously been deleted. I hated the way schools blocked every single social media website and others etc, but I'm free from that now haha. I saw the reverted message on your talk page and then declined the speedy deletion after reading your edit summaries. Hope you're well mate. Class455 (talk|stand clear of the doors!) 14:17, 2 February 2017 (UTC)
- Once again, thank you. I'm doing good; as you may have gathered, I'm in sixth form (curse Smoothwall), and I'm doing French, English, and RS (religious studies); I take it you decided to go to college? Do you mind if I ask what you chose to study? Take care mate, hope you're doing well also. Patient Zerotalk 14:21, 2 February 2017 (UTC)
- Patient Zero Yes mate, I'm doing a course in Travel and Tourism, as I would like to go into a career on the railways. I may also be able to help out with your article as well. However, I've got quite a backlog of college work at the moment (hence why my activity has slowed down quite a lot). Is French A Level a lot harder than GCSE? I did it at GCSE and was considering doing an A Level in it. Class455 (talk|stand clear of the doors!) 14:25, 2 February 2017 (UTC)
- (talk page watcher)Essential if you want to work those Class 9s though! ;) O Fortuna!...Imperatrix mundi. 14:30, 2 February 2017 (UTC)
- That sounds good. Don't worry if you find you're short on time; obviously college should be your priority (and it sounds like you're doing something you really enjoy which is a bonus!). It is quite a bit harder than GCSE, though not a lot harder; that being said French was my forté (pun intended) and so I can't speak for everybody. If your GCSE course was less focused on conversational and oral French and more focused on controlled assessments, learning tenses, fixed topics which one may not necessarily speak about in the real world (work experience/school uniform/household chores to name a few) etc. like mine was, it's quite a big leap - thankfully my exam board have changed the GCSE syllabus to make the transition easier for the current Y11's who want to do it. My exam board also requires us to write a 200-word essay on a random topic under exam conditions, which we are learning to do now. As for the future, you could always do a foreign language like French or Spanish at university - some will let you do that alongside another subject like law for example, and you do not need to have had past experience of learning the language, let alone be fluent in it! I highly recommend the apps Quizlet and Duolingo if you would like to further your linguistic skills at home. Take care! Patient Zerotalk 15:38, 2 February 2017 (UTC)

Noinclude
You applied the speedy tag to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/International Project Management Association (2nd nomination) without surrounding it with <noinclude></noinclude>
. This meant that the log page and a number of other pages that transclude the specific AfD page would all get sent falsely to CAT:CSD. You have closed the discussion. I see no reason why the page needs deleted. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 17:44, 5 February 2017 (UTC)
- That clears it up, RHaworth. I was completely unaware that the noinclude code had to be added. I marked it for deletion for housekeeping purposes (created in error), as another AfD i once created in error was deleted before under G6. I see why you thought the edit was vandalism because of the false cats. I also wasnt aware it had made it onto other logs (I would have removed the discussion it if i'd spotted it). Also, nice to see a fellow Croydonian on here . Class455 (talk|stand clear of the doors!) 17:51, 5 February 2017 (UTC)

Problems
- The block log sometimes showed blocks as being much longer than they were. This has now been fixed. [27]
Changes this week
- Wikimedia pages will now be better at showing pictures when you share them on social media. The descriptions will be different too. You can see an example of before and after. [28]
- There are some changes to the OOjs UI. Some old functions will not work anymore or not work as they used to. This could be a breaking change. [29]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 7 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 8 February. It will be on all wikis from 9 February (calendar).

Future changes
- Tidy will be replaced later this year. Instead, the HTML 5 parsing algorithm will be used to clean up bad HTML in wikitext. This will cause problems on a number of wikis. They need to be fixed first. You can see if your wiki still has something to fix here for one of the HTML problems. This list does not cover all problems. You can read about more problems. [30][31]

Reverted edit on Kingston College
I can't find a way of messaging you so I am doing it here I added John Bratby to the Kingston College alumni because I thought people would be interested
You deleted it because you thought it wasn't constructive I've no idea what that means It's true (it's on Bratby's wiki page so it must be) It's interesting So what's not constructive about it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dominiclagan (talk • contribs) 11:57, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
- @Dominiclagan: Fear not, you're in the right place for messaging me! I removed it because it wasn't notable enough to be included, John Bratby does not even have his own page for starters, and secondly, your reason "I thought people would be interested" verges on the scales of being classed as "promotion or advertising" of the person you're talking about, and Wikipedia isn't the place to do this if this was your intention, so that's why I gave you a warning.. Also, please remember to sign talk page comments when you post on a talk page, just so other editors know who's sending the message. Thanks! Class455 (talk|stand clear of the doors!) 12:05, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
You say that John Bratby (a member of the Royal Academy and the prime exponent of the kitchen sink school) does not have a wiki page then what is this? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Bratby Why should I be advertising a long dead artist? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dominiclagan (talk • contribs) 15:05, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
- Apologies, i didn't know about the page. It could have helped if you linked the page on the article, by typing the following code, [[John Bratby]] . This is useful to link to other pages. Most editors would think that they aren't notable if they don't have an article linked. The entry has now been re-added with a link to the page. Thank you Class455 (talk|stand clear of the doors!) 15:49, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
