I noticed the edit you made to the Basking Shark article and I just wanted to bring it to your attention that the link you removed was probably not linkspam as you put it. In fact, many animal articles on wikipedia include ARKive as an external reference as it includes many images and videos, as well as invaluable material, that we might not always have available on wikipedia. Removing links to ARKive Manta Ray movies

I reverted your deletion of the link to Arkive on the Manta ray page. You stated as reason that it was spam, which strikes me as kind of odd because ARKive is a non-profit charity and features many highly interesting movies which add considerably to wikipedia. Then I noticed that you deleted similar links on many other pages. May I ask the reasons behind your actions? Sure, feel free to expand them. Band templates

Thanks for the note. So... many... templates. A couple of days ago there were, what, ten in that category? I've also started Category:Musician templates, which is much smaller and a bit more haphazard. Most of the templates in there are similarly-formatted footer templates, but a few are true oddities.

This is not to mention all the templates I passed up categorizing during my search, because I simply have no idea where in the hierarchy they fit in. (And the hierarchy seems spotty, as well. Wouldn't many of the footer templates in Category:Templates by article category also fit into Category:Navigational templates?)

...We need solid guidelines for template categorization. And then we need to get people to do these thoroughly meta-tasks that most readers never see the outcome of. –Unint 03:24, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

Standarization

Then I thought of something else. Given what I've seen during the sweep you're working on right now, how much standarization are you aiming for?

I ask this mainly because my view on these band templates is that they work best when used to point out non-standard aspects of a band. See {{The Beatles}} (the original band template?), with "Management" and "Production" and no discography at all. See {{The KLF}}, with "furthermore known as". See {{Nine Inch Nails}}, with the Halo index. Then there's non-standard implementation of the same features: some templates have "current members" and "past members" labelled, while others do not, for example. Most templates have current members in a top row and past members in a smaller, bottom row, but I had to go and fix {{Enigma}} due to its usage of the second row in a different context.

As for what I'm doing, I edited {{New Order}} just before you got to it, with the bars "side projects", "related articles", and "related people". Given the number of articles these comprise, as New Order's history seems to associate with a higher-than-average number of other noteworthy subjects, I think they really do need to be subdivided — maybe under one header bar, though.

Also, I'm currently developing a rather more non-standarized template at User:Unint/Template:Leeb-Fulber, which aims to summarize more than one band in a single box. Granted, this is very tentative, but I'd like to toss this into the mix as food for thought. –Unint 04:36, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

The wording of "furthermore known as" in The KLF's template is a little nod and wink to those who already know the band, a tiny indulgence; it's how they refer to their alter-egos in a famous lyric. Anyway, the point is that The KLF had number one hit singles under two different names (KLF, Timelords), top 40 hits singles under 3 or 4 names (JAMs, possibly 2K), and substantial press coverage with about 5 (those mentioned plus the K Foundation)! The "also known as" section is, therefore, entirely justified. It gets a little tiresome when people continually find things to criticise! --kingboyk 07:11, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

The edit history (and for some, the talk pages as well) of these templates contain valuable information. If the content of these templates is merged into some articles, as for the case of the country infoboxes, or the function of these templates has combined into another very similar template, edit history and talk pages are still useful. Regarding the images that will be orphaned... I figured a bot would handle it after the template disappeared. I'll know which images to replace when the bot invalidates the images on the pages, which will then show up on my watchlist. Actually, it's not deprecated, because it's not supposed (cannot be) replaced. The old format pages have to be referenced in full.

Every once in awhile, during research or for repeat TfD, I've been known to add it to talk pages to point to the old discussion. So, it's alive and kicking, and probably will be forever. There was a long discussion, and various folks didn't want it subst, either. So, given that knowledge, please revise the template description as appropriate.
