Hello

[edit]

You seem to be lonely over here... or are you deleting your mail? I liked your recent article. Engineers don't feature enough. So the hook below should be on the front page in next 4-6 days. Did you know...

Updated DYK query On 17 January, 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Nicholas Straussler, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

I second that it's good to see an engineering article on DYK. --Royalbroil 00:36, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

File source problem with File:Expedition Seven.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Expedition Seven.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider verifying that you have specified sources for those files as well. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged per Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion, F4. If the image is copyrighted and non-free, the image will be deleted 48 hours after 02:40, 28 March 2010 (UTC) per speedy deletion criterion F7. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. FASTILYsock(TALK) 02:40, 28 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Reviewer

[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged revisions, underwent a two-month trial which ended on 15 August 2010. Its continued use is still being discussed by the community, you are free to participate in such discussions. Many articles still have pending changes protection applied, however, and the ability to review pending changes continues to be of use.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under level 1 pending changes and edits made by non-reviewers to level 2 pending changes protected articles (usually high traffic articles). Pending changes was applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

For the guideline on reviewing, see Wikipedia:Reviewing. Being granted reviewer rights doesn't grant you status nor change how you can edit articles even with pending changes. The general help page on pending changes can be found here, and the general policy for the trial can be found here.

If you do not want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Acalamari 15:32, 18 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

BARV

[edit]

Hi, not sure how to edit your submission on Hobarts Funnies, but was doing a bit of research on Canadian RAM tanks, and came across a photo at http://www.ramtank.ca/ram_experiments.htm, this has a photo of a RAM tank fitted out as a BARV (definetly a RAM, its got the nice little induction inlets that replaced the side doors), so at least one must have been produced in Canada for training (much the Australian M3 BARV), 94.14.91.135 (talk) 22:45, 28 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Disney bomb

[edit]

I have just discovered that three of us are working simlutaenously on an article on the Disney bomb. You, me and User:Afernand74 (User:Afernand74/sandbox 6). Mine is nowhere near as good as either of yours but I think you two should ccompare notes. GraemeLeggett (talk) 10:35, 9 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for pointing that out. I suggest to work on one single page. I will merge my article with Catsmeat's one and delete mine afterwards. --Alberto Fernandez Fernandez (talk) 11:05, 9 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (File:Victoryairpowerstill.png)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Victoryairpowerstill.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Melesse (talk) 22:18, 9 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've taken the fair use rationale you had supplied at the time and made it clearer. I suggest you move the article to Disney bomb (or Disney Bomb) then the image can be relinked making it no longer an orphan. GraemeLeggett (talk) 12:36, 10 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Had a thought - if the system won't let you move the article to "Disney bomb" because of the edit history at that article name, you can either 1) move to "Disney Bomb" to get the article out there and sort out a pagemove later, or 2) we cna find an admin to do the move for you. A note on the milhist project should bring one out of the woodwork. GraemeLeggett (talk) 12:56, 10 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Please move the article to main space. Credits for the article should be yours. Alberto Fernandez Fernandez (talk) 13:40, 10 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Survey

[edit]

Hi Catsmeat!

I have put together a survey for female editors of Wikipedia (and related projects) in order to explore, in greater detail, women's experiences and roles within the Wikimedia movement. It'd be wonderful if you could participate!

It's an independent survey, done by me, as a fellow volunteer Wikimedian. It is not being done on behalf of the Wikimedia Foundation. I hope you'll participate!

Just click this link to participate in this survey, via Google!

Any questions or concerns, feel free to email me or stop by my user talk page. Also, feel free to share this any other female Wikimedians you may know. It is in English, but any language Wikimedia participants are encouraged to participate. I appreciate your contributions - to the survey and to Wikipedia! Thank you! I noticed you restored the dead link. I still can't get the document to open. I don't think the link is necessary, since I can source it anyway, and I'm planning to upgrade this article to GA/FA eventually, so it needs to be sorted. How can you get it to open , when I can't (tried Chrome and Firefox)? Jimfbleak - talk to me? 21:27, 5 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, the pages opened fine from the links on my talk. I'm tempted to put these in External Links. They are interesting, but redundant, and might be challenged in the main text as not RS at FAC. FAC is months away, I've barely started, and I need to go and take some pics too, so no rush to decide. Jimfbleak - talk to me? 06:14, 6 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again, thanks for the SS Vina bit. Two queries.
  • What does +1944" mean?
  • The newspaper refs are clearly RS. What about wrecks.org? If it's challenged when this eventually goes to FAC, how do I justify it as RS?
thanks again Jimfbleak - talk to me? 19:13, 15 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I used local history groups quite a bit in my last FA, so they're OK, but this is one step removed. I'll leave it until FAC; if it's challenged, I think that your other two refs and my existing (print) ref 4 cover it anyway. Thanks again Jimfbleak - talk to me? 06:27, 17 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for Vina pic. I'm about to start the road to GA/FA. As I indicated before, one, possibly two, refs may be challenged, but I#ll worry about that when/if it happens Jimfbleak - talk to me? 07:30, 21 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Dundas

Hello

I'll try. I've got bits and pieces but nothing specific. Dapi89 (talk) 16:49, 21 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Good evening,

Have a look-see. Need a little more on the early life and a clean up but on track for an easy G.A methinks. Dapi89 (talk) 18:44, 23 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Evening,

I'm scrapping the bottom of the barrel now with the sources I have. Have you anything else? I'm tempted to submit it for G.A now and just see what happens. Dapi89 (talk) 19:08, 1 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Oh dear. Sounds like an aunt and uncle of mine. Good work on finding the Wrk Nr of the Do 17. I don't think I had that, even though I did get the Dornier Do 17 article to G.A several years back. I have all the Chris Goss books you see (I used him in both articles in relation to this machine), but I don't think that was mentioned. I'll dig for it. Dapi89 (talk) 18:27, 2 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It was passed as G.A—FYA. Dapi89 (talk) 19:09, 2 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again. Thanks. You know it is probably the most satisfying yet. These people deserved to be talked about. Dundas was just one of tens of thousands of aces, very good at their craft, which are relegated to a mere footnote in history. Very few RAF personnel are recognised in this way on wikipedia. Misterbee1966 is an editor I have worked with quite often on German personnel, not so much anymore as we've drifted off to do different things, but we still swap information. He has done some epic work on aces and Knights Cross (and higher) winners. I think I'm going to try to bring GA to a number of other British/Commonwealth airman in the same way. Dapi89 (talk) 18:34, 6 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, thanks. I have gather some stuff on Noel Agazarian. I belif I have a full list of his claims. I might give it a go but it will have to wait in line. Some of the more prominent aces will come first. Cheers. Dapi89 (talk) 18:38, 7 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I am trying to get Albert Stevens nominated for WP:Did You Know... So it needs a little more work, but I added a lot of info and a new reference or two that will knock your socks off! Anyway, it needs some help from the like of you!

The DYK project is fun, and you can help write a "hook" to get people to read about poor Albert. Like

Did you know... that when a researcher discovered government documents about him and tracked him down, that he had just died only a year before.

Thanks, I like to saw logs! (talk) 09:19, 3 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

it's nominated. My hooks may be too long. We'll see I like to saw logs! (talk) 09:16, 5 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Also, here is a picture of Albert: http://www.fas.org/sgp/othergov/doe/lanl/pubs/00326640.pdf Look at page 2 of the PDF. This is a photostat of Welsome's newpaper article reprint, which was published in 1993. I don't think that it is available on the web anywhere. Welsome's book is, and surely the book has a picture of Albert since the newspaper article did. I like to saw logs! (talk) 09:21, 5 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

About a year ago you made this edit where I suspect you copied text from the Disney bomb article, but AFAICT you did not give any indication that you had done so. Please read WP:Copying within Wikipedia which explains what credits you need to give (a link to the name of the article you copied the text from in the edit history is sufficient). This also has a practical use for editors who come to the page lager, if any of the long citations have not been copied across it makes finding them easier. -- PBS (talk) 00:13, 2 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Terrapin movie

[edit]

Just looked at your addition to the Terrapin article and viewed the movie. The "Aquacheetah" seems to be something in size between the DUKW and the amphibious jeep - do you know of its official name? GraemeLeggett (talk) 11:58, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I just had a bit of luck with "aqua cheetah amphibious vehicle" as search term. 3/4 Ton 4x4 Amphibian Aqua-cheetah by the Amphibian Car Corporation. With G-number G552. But still a bloody obscure vehicle. GraemeLeggett (talk) 20:18, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Catsmeat,

I'm hoping that you can help me with some research on James Pratt and John Smith. I feel as though I have reached a standstill and, since you have made significant changes to that page, was hoping you could lead me in the right direction. Is there a good way to contact you other than here?

Someone is impersonating you

[edit]

Hello Catsmeat, I had been working on a biography for many months but it continued to get declined. The common reasons for the declination was that it needed to be written in a more encyclopedic tone. I finally gave up on the article. A few weeks ago I received an email (not a message on my talk page) from someone claiming to be a wikipedian editor with high privileges. She said that she could rewrite the biography in an encyclopedic tone and get it published (for a fee) and referred me to your userpage, claiming that it was her own. I just wanted to alert you because I know that this type of impersonation is happening with other legit editors as well. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.126.195.2 (talk) 14:52, 20 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You are also being represented as this Elance account: https://www.elance.com/s/catsmeat/ Thought you would want to know. One of the jobs they took was to edit Bobby Yazdani. I'm going to report this impersonation at COIN after you acknowledge receipt of this note, please don't be alarmed. – Brianhe (talk) 06:46, 15 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Roberta Cowell

[edit]

Hello, due to your huge input on the Roberta Cowell page I thought it might interest you to know that a production company have just finished filming a documentary on her and in particular her relationship with Michael Dillon. There will be an interview with one of Betty's daughters (my mother) in the Telegraph on the 24th of this month with the documentary to be aired on Channel 4 shortly thereafter. There's plenty of recently rediscovered information about Betty which I think will add greatly to the article in time. I think there will be a renewed interest in her story and as such an increase in edits of her wiki page - ALLOCKE|talk 21:52, 7 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that. I let the article on her drop a few years ago and my attention was taken by other things because I ran out of information sources I could easily access, unfortunately this was before I'd filled all the holes in the article I really wanted to fill.Catsmeat (talk) 22:54, 7 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Europe 10,000 Challenge invite

[edit]

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 02:45, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

March Madness 2017

[edit]

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

Gliding Vs flying

[edit]

I am curious about how you got the idea that an airplane cannot glide (maintains adequate speed to prevent a stall, by using the force of gravity instead of engine power) if its engine(s) are still operating? [[1]]

FYI, airline pilots make regular use of the gliding mode during their descents, by pulling engine thrust back to inflight-idle thrust and then utilizing the power of gravity to keep the IAS safely above the stalling speed for any given weight and altitude. There really isn't any significant difference in an airliner maintaining adequate safe airspeed during a descent via the force of gravity, with engines still running or with them not running. About all one can say is that if the engines are running in idle mode, during the descent, the plane might be able to glide a bit further than with no engines running at all. But, it is still "gliding" if the main source of safe airspeed is gravity, rather than engine thrust. Thank you. EditorASC (talk) 22:38, 26 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive

[edit]

G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
  • updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign up here.

DYK for Shadwell forgeries

[edit]

On 23 July 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Shadwell forgeries, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the Shadwell forgeries, crude 19th-century fake medieval artefacts, are now sought-after collectibles in their own right? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Shadwell forgeries. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Shadwell forgeries), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Hi! Most interested in the IWM picture of a synchroniser test rig! I have had a go at getting more details about it, but can't find anything but the IWM page. It is most certainly not a Vickers-Challenger gear, as the link to the "propeller" is either a hydraulic line (or perhaps a flexible drive?) - definitely no sign of the Vickers-Challenger's push rod. I suspect it is not a "CC" gear either - the roughness and makeshift nature of the whole thing seems to indicate a "field" experiment, put together out of bits and pieces available "to hand" at, say, an operational squadron.

I believe, in fact, that it is a picture of the experimental hydraulic gear designed and tested by Air Mechanic Betteridge of No. 1 squadron Australian Flying Corps in 1917 (his unit were serving in the Middle East at the time). Information about this gear, which was apparently reported to higher command and ignored, is hard to come by - but I have long considered adding a little note with what I can glean about it - and if I can connect it a little more firmly than my current surmise with this graphic so much the better! --Soundofmusicals (talk)

I may well restore the "separate" versions of the Vickers-Challenger pictures - the current setup doesn't really "work" - although I appreciate why you did it. --Soundofmusicals (talk) 04:54, 31 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Well! I ended up acting on the above without giving you time to comment - hope you don't mind! The illustration IS of the "Betteridge" test rig - so we can find a much better place for it in the new section. Thank you very much indeed for coming up with it, by the way. You may by now be aware of the requirements on copying text within Wikipedia if so apologies for reiterating something you already know.

With this Revision as of 08:55, 23 April 2012 to IJmuiden, you copied text from Disney bomb (and possibly another article). Editors have to attribute the copying of text from one article to another to meet the requirements of the guideline. It is a copyright violation not to do so. However see the section "Other reasons for attributing text" there are other reasons for attribution including making it easier for editors to fix citations in the editor who makes the copy does not copy over the full citation. -- PBS (talk) 18:49, 11 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I noticed you contributed to one of the past Imperial College userboxes, and are one of the only editors who has who's still around. A little while ago I revamped the userbox colours and imagery, and more recently I have recreated a free-use SVG coat of arms, which it can use. Just wondering if you had any comments—I don't particularly want to go round messing people's userpages up. People have had their own... less-than-well-formated ideas for some of the ones I use, so I realised it might be annoying. Shadowssettle(talk) 08:56, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
