Thanks for your excellent additions to the various heradry articles. I see that you have deleted {{College of Arms}} from several articles relating to the College of Arms. Do you object to it? One more thing - I see you have been adding College of Arms and Officer of Arms to the "See also" section of the articles for the individual offices. However, there is no need for the "See also" section to include terms that are already wikilinked elsewhere in the article - the general rule is that a term should be linked the first time it is mentioned, but not thereafter. Charles Francis Stein, III

I have put in a request to move the page that was Charles Stein (and is now Charles Francis Stein, III) back to Charles Francis Stein since there are a Charles Stein, Professor Emeritus of Statistics at Stanford University, a Charles J. Stein (musician), and a Charles Stein who is a columnist for the Boston Globe, all of whom are rather more famous and prominent (though certainly no more laudable in their worldly contributions) than Charles Francis Stein, III. Perhaps a disambiguation page is in order also, in addition to the moving of the excellent founder of the American College of Heraldry to Charles Francis Stein from Charles Stein? Thanks very much, both for your consideration and for your additions to Wikipedia. Much appreciated. Also, please forgive any carnage I have created in the edit logs of Charles Francis Stein, III; I had a senior moment while doing some of the editing, and I hope no one is adversely affected. Heraldry

Hi Dave,

Got your email. Great job on the rewrite, I've been meaning to do something like that since the article had a peer review (which went nowhere) a couple of months ago. It's much more coherent than before, and is now cited properly! The history section is still a bit light; a quick look at the French and German versions shows they talk about a lot of stuff other than the rules of blazon, so maybe we can pick up some ideas from there. It felt a little Anglocentric in places, although this is probably a consequence of most of the English-language literature on the topic being about British heraldry. Maybe once a few more of the Heraldry by country articles get written we can mention some of the differences. Also, I wonder if it is necessary to have both the Image:Divisions of the field.png and Image:Ordinaries.png images, in there, as they are quite long, and in Internet Explorer lead to some unsightly white space, although everything's fine in Firefox.

Btw, I saw your 'officers of arms in the ODNB' proposal. I think it's a good idea, and I do have access to the ODNB, however I'm going to be quite busy for the next few months so I won't be much help with this.

Civil Air Patrol Awards

Hi there, just taking a quick look at your work in your sandbox, and one quick comment that comes to mind is the order you've put certain things in. You have the Senior Member awards and Cadet awards separated from each other by a lot of material with the Service awards. Considering that the Senior and Cadet awards are in many ways complements of each other and similar types awards, it would seem to me to make more sense to have these sections go sequentially with each other, rather than separated. You might also want to think of a different title for those sections than "awards," at least on the cadet side. The majority of the items listed are achievement ribbons, and not awards. Hi Boven: it is wonderful that so much attention is being paid to the Order of St John! This constant battle of Wiki idealogy over what is in actual fact correct is becoming a bit wearisome. Needless to say, it is a great pity that the Order of St John page wasn't set up correctly in the first place, which is what I think is causing the problem. There are now so many references to the Venerable Order on the internet (in no small part I suppose because Wiki propogates this terminology), but you will find that on official literature (& indeed in normal parlance by those au fait with correct form) the order has never been styled as such. I think it would be an exaggeration to say that leaving it as "Venerable" rather than changing it to "Most Venerable" was agreed on my Talk page: in my view it was a resignation by me to the status quo. "Venerable" nonetheless remains incorrect and therefore should not be reverted where mistakes are spotted and corrected to "Most Venerable". Also the breast star depicted was not that of KGStJ but that of KJStJ (qv: http://www.cmp-cpm.forces.gc.ca/dhr-ddhr/chc-tdh/chart-tableau-eng.asp?ref=StJohn- ). Since so much time and energy is being expended on this matter (when I have already pointed out the correct form but have for some unknown reason been overruled (by people unknown to me and of course vice versa)) why don't we, or Wiki, now get this matter correct? Hi Boven: thanks for being back in touch & I agree that the Order of St John situation is a bit of a wrangle - and I wholeheartedly agree with you that the short-form of Order of St John is correct. However, no doubt someone will pop up one day & say that the Order of St John also applies to the Order of Malta which is also true. So I guess do we keep muddling along or do we do something about getting the prefix sorted? Whilst Venerable as a colloquialism is well understood, what do you think about Wikipedia and its users' almost near-obsession with MOS etc when this is patently wrong and Most Venerable is the proper prefix? OSJ

As I indicated in my original edit the OSJ statues say use Post noms internally but they are not used externally (except for OSJ business). Which is why wiki guidance in a number of places has previously agreed not to use them here. eg List_of_post-nominal_letters_(United_Kingdom) "When listing the honours and awards enjoyed by any person it is not customary to include the Order of St John, as this is a Royal Order and not a State Order, and so confers no precedence." Thanks for the note. I was using MOS:POSTNOM as my guide for using the post-nomials of the Order of St John. It says "Post-nominal letters, other than those denoting academic degrees, should be included in the lead section when they are issued by a country or widely recognizable organization with which the subject has been closely associated." As the Lord Prior for a dozen years, I'd say that qualifies. The Manual of Style seems like it ought to be one of the last words on the topic. In fact, the page at List_of_post-nominal_letters_(United_Kingdom) doesn't really say anything about St John post-nomials and their use on Wikipedia. If the Manual of Style is updated or some other compelling case can be made to leave them off the lead, I'll probably go back and add them in to Lord Vestey's page. MOS:POSTNOM like most general guides is a broad brush which is why we have local MOS. Most countries don't have authorised PNs. Those that do in the examples we are covering depreciate the OSJ use (Not simply the UK but Canada Australia and others...) because it is not a state order.
