Tiled[edit]

A {{prod}} template has been added to the article Tiled, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice explains why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you endorse deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please tag it with {{db-author}}. B. Wolterding 15:06, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Mana World[edit]

Hello. Just thought I'd let you know that there's a strong conflict of interest in your contribution to The Mana World's AfD (and indeed, to the article itself, as you appear to be one of the developers. Please read wikipedia's page on conflict of interest. It's also something I'm going to bring up on the AfD. Thanks! Fin© 16:10, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Uhm, sorry, I don't have time for this... My problem with the whole matter is that to me Wikipedia seems to be dealing with these kind of things largely in an unfair way. I've had the same issue before as you can see above, where a Tiled user decided to start a page about it on Wikipedia but it was quickly proposed for deletion. Mentioning of several projects that are using Tiled was fruitless. Meanwhile similar applications have their pages like Mappy (editor) and Tile Studio (both of which only have their own website as source). I see the same thing repeat itself with The Mana World, even though it is much more notable that any of the previously mentioned projects. This just makes me feel rather sad about this place. --Bjørn (talk) 22:10, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with you on Tile Studio - you should nominate it for deletion if you feel it is not notable (I might do myself). Anyway, if you've time to create an edit articles, you should also take some time to read some of the wikis policies - WP:NOTABLE, about whether subjects are notable enough for inclusion; WP:COI, about conflicts of interest; as regards the existence of Mappy and Tile Studio, see WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. I know it must be irritating for it to feel like the community's against you, but if you read the articles I've just linked you, you'll see it's not personal, it's simply how the wiki is kept in shape. Also, if you feel sad, WP:) is a good place to go for a laugh =) Thanks! Fin© 22:57, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I mislinked Mappy, I meant Mappy (editor). In any case I do not consider it my place to mark either of these pages for deletion. Especially as the author of Tiled, it would obviously be seen as an attack on competing software. About having time, note that I merely improved the article about The Mana World a bit, I do not have time to create articles. I also wouldn't know what I would create an article about, since all the projects I'm working on are apparently unnotable, which just means I should be spending more time on those instead. --Bjørn (talk) 09:16, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Another reason for not marking the Mappy and Tile Studio articles for deletion is because I actually think they are fine, just like I thought an article about Tiled would be fine. I use Wikipedia as a reference, and if I want to compare different tile map editors then I expect these three to be mentioned because they are the main freely available generic tile map editors out there. If they are not notable now, they will never be, since these editors are meant for game developers of tile based games, of which there are inherently very few. If Wikipedia isn't the place to look for objective information about the different options, then I wouldn't know where else to look. --Bjørn (talk) 09:20, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
See, thing is, neither article is "fine" - they have no third party sources and no assertion of notability, two things a wikipedia article requires. If they are not notable, then they should not be included. For instance, as a university project, I coded a mini physics C++ physics API which I called Disarray. It's the only mini C++ physics API I know of, but that on its own is not enough for inclusion. However, I think all the articles mentioned (Mappy, Tile Studio, Mana World) could be transferred to the Open Source wiki on wikia [1], which catalogs open source software. I'm not sure of their stance on notability and such, but you might have an easier time including such articles over there.
Also, as regards what articles you could create - if they're well sourced and notable, you can create anything you want! I suggest you read both those articles to familiarise yourself with the topics. Thanks! Fin© 11:52, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Forgot to mention, I've prod'd both of those articles. Fin© 11:53, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Bjorn, I have no affiliation with the Game, other than providing common sense to Wikipedia as a whole. This article has been obviously and brutally railroaded. The final reasoning for deletion is not even valid for this game. This is my latest post on the deleting editor's page: "Have you ever actually READ WP:WEB? "Wikipedia should avoid articles about web sites...". Well, The Mana World is 'not' a website, it's an computer application resident on the most common releases of Linux, just like [[Inkball] appears on Microsoft Vista - and Vista has far less distribution around the world than those versions of Linux. Therefore, WP:WEB cannot be used in this specific application. Um, next?" Have you noticed, for example, that all of Inkball's references are directly from Microsoft? OH MY GOD! That article should be speedily deleted!!! BMW(drive) 17:53, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Yes, I noticed somebody mentioned The Mana World being a website, but I wasn't aware this mattered anything. In any case I have better things to do. I'll come back once The Mana World is covered by some prominent magazine or website. Though since of course I am closely connected to the project, it is probably better that I don't come back at all. --Bjørn (talk) 23:24, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Mana World deletion[edit]

At The Mana World, you created a new article with a {{hangon}} tag, apparently to ask about why the page was deleted. You can find details about the deletion of the page from the deletion log. If you have further questions, you may contact the deleting admin. Please note that I did not delete the article with content, just the version that consisted of the hangon tag. If this isn't clear or you have any other questions, please feel free to ask. Pagrashtak 14:18, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I read I should add a {{hangon}} tag if I didn't agree with the speedy deletion. I didn't know being deleted once around here meant that you can never recreate the page without having it deleted in seconds again. --Bjørn (talk) 14:44, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hangon isn't for contesting a page that has been deleted—it's for pages that still exist that are marked for deletion, as in, "hang on, don't delete this just yet!" Once deleted, always deleted isn't the general rule around here. If an article is deleted, recreations are generally allowed as long as the new article addresses the problems that led to the original deletion. If we didn't allow speedy deletion of material recreated after AFD, someone could simply recreate the same article every week, resulting in an even further clogged AFD and an article that essentially cannot be deleted. I assure you, if The Mana World were to get a cover story in Newsweek, the article could be recreated without being deleted. Pagrashtak 05:09, 3 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
