Lol, always surprising how often those types of edit conflicts happen. At least you usually get a warning when someone has changed the page before yours; it is disconcerting when everything appears to go normally but the edit history shows that you made no edit! Hey, I saw many of your recent edits have involved adding pictures to US Military units. You might want to consider joining WP:Wikiproject Military History. We could always use more users interested in expanding military unit information and articles. 13:33, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

Hi! It seems you recently created an unreferenced biography of a living person: Batool Fatima. The community has decided that all new biographies of living persons must contain a reliable source that supports at least one statement made about the person in the article as per our verifiability policy. Please add references as soon as possible. Thanks! --LaraBot (talk) 00:10, 27 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

thanks for your contribution. I am still reading up on various philatelists and as soon as I find material on him will add to it. His profile was suppose to be a stub and so for now its ok. I have added stub tags so that others may add to it if they know of his philatelic activities. Rzafar (talk) 17:16, 9 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi, thanks for adopting me. I'm new & starting to read, but Wiki is SO big it's somewhat bewildering at times, so am looking for specific help from time to time when particularly disoriented. (Is okay?) Also is there a way to communicate privately so my confusions aren't subject to public view here? Thank you. Ihardlythinkso (talk) 14:57, 12 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Adopt-a-user reminder

[edit]

Hello, I have completed a general cleanup of the adopter information page for the adopt-a-user project, located here. During my cleanup, I have removed several inactive and retired users. In order to provide interested adoptees with an easy location to find adopters, it is essential that the page be up-to-date with the latest information possible. Thus:

  • If you are no longer interested in being an adopter, please remove yourself from the list.
  • If you are still interested, please check the list to see if any information needs to be updated or added - especially your availability. Thank you.
  • You are receiving this message because you are listed as an adopter here.

students

[edit]

Despite my exhortations, a number of students have not kept up with assignments in WP or other places. Dont feel bad. On the other hand, dont feel pressured if, all of a sudden, you get urgent requests to help out with work from Oct 3 to Oct 5. Portfolios for the second partial, which includes work done on WP are due on the 5th. Im sure the students who have not been up to speed will try to do everything in one sitting. If you still want to help, officially as an adopter or not, there is a list of students on my userpage. Those who have done work have messages about it on their talk pages. As for removing content, please check with the student or me first. I have not gone over citation rules yet, but I know where the information is coming from and have been adding and/or correcting the citations.Thelmadatter (talk) 19:50, 25 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Not a problem, thanks for the speedy reply. bigforrap (talk) 12:48, 26 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Dubai College

[edit]

Hello, Thank you for your message. Firstly I would to congratulate you on the new DC layout and the work you have done to improve the wiki page. However, I do not like the fact that this is the second time you have reverted all of my additions. Whilst I appreciate your points about spelling etc, you must appreciate the areas that I have raised are, at the very least, foundations to be built upon...and not simply erased. I agree that citations are a very good way of legitimising a website, however I disagree with your opinions on bullet points and boxes. I think you'll find they are a far more efficient way of presenting information about facilities etc then the use of convoluted and scrambled sentences. Whilst it is apparent that this something you have been systematically ironing out, the page is still littered with anachronisms and misplaced sentences. The table of houses, Young Enterprise and DOE are unique selling points of the school, and as such, they are important. Although I did not expand on them, they should be mentioned in the area of extra curricular activities, as should activites like diving (if that still happens) as it is rather rare.

As far as spelling goes, I genuinely apologise... the loss of spell check stings...

It is obvious you are a pro at this wiki lark, whereas I… am not – however for your reference, I attach links to school pages that I consider to be well done and take inspiration from:

(all these schools are British independent schools with extremely good reputations)

Regards,

Wikirjmpmb (talk) 19:27, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the quick reply, sorry if I came off harshly. I've seen too many people (mostly students and faculty) advertising the school on this page, and I guess somewhere along the line I lost the ability to distinguish between genuine help and self-promotion. Along with that I also lost much of my patience.
I do have a point to make about the house inclusions though. With all the schools you gave as examples, the houses had significant history. In a school like Dubai College, they have none. I studied in a school called Dubai Gem Private School at one point, and they had houses named after the Sheikhs of Dubai. The only defining feature between these houses was colour, as with DC. I can't really see the importance of a 'house for the sake of having a house', just to conform to British norms. In the schools you mentioned, they are physical Boarding houses.
BTW I didn't erase the houses, they're in the infobox.
Whereas I think the articles you linked are well written, I also agree with the general consensus that they are not of Featured Article quality.
That's why I use articles from Category:FA-Class_school_articles as my reference. None of them are British schools, but they give a better benchmark to follow in my opinion.
I can say one thing with absolute conviction. I hate half finished articles. I'm of the opinion, because I've seen this method being used other places, that any new sections should be first put into the talk page. They can be built up there, and once sufficiently informative, implemented into the article.
I know the opposing argument is that 'unfinished sections' encourage people to expand them, so as a middle ground, I stand by implementing the section if no reply is received on the talk page after 2 days. But give people the chance to expand it, instead of immediately planting a pointless, one sentence paragraph into the page.
Instead of a one sentence section, as I said before, put it into the introductory paragraph. F1 in Schools and Golf have their own sections because they were both newsworthy, whereas DC has never had a Young Enterprise related news report..
I think we should stay in contact, as we're seemingly the only 2 active contributors to this article. Collaborate, rather than diverge. I'll be sure to notify you before making a particularly large edit. Hope you'll extend me the same courtesy.
PS: You said 'unique selling points'. We're not selling the school here, nor are we advertising. Write facts. If there's a murder in the school, it gets onto the article, however bad it is for the image of the establishment.
Not burning you, just making sure we're clear :). NPOV is dead important in this neck of the internet.

Re: List of Test cricket triple centuries

[edit]

Thanks for your comments. The WICB flag used to be in use on these pages; however it is a non-free use image. If you look at the [page], you'll see the rationale for its use on just two pages: West Indies cricket team and West Indies Cricket Board. It can not, unfortunately, be used on any other pages than these, hence my removal of it. Trust me, we'd all like for it to appear on all lists including the West Indies, but it can't be. Regards, Harrias talk 06:52, 8 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the reply. I now understand the situation. Hopefully in the future there can be a solution. - bigforrap (talk) 15:05, 8 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

An update from adopt a user

[edit]

Hi there Bigforrap! You may be wondering, what have I done to sound the alarm this time? Nothing. I'm messaging you in regards to the adopt-a-user program, which currently has a backlog of users wishing to be adopted. This doesn't make much sense, as we have a considerable list of users offer adoption, so there shouldn't be any backlog. I've begun to eliminate this backlog myself through a matching program, but I need your help to make it work. Of course, adoptees and adopters don't have to go through there, but I believe it helps eliminate the backlog because someone is actively matching pairs.

On the list of adopters, I have modified the middle column to say "Interests." It's easier working with other users that have similar interests, so if it's not too much to ask, could you add your interests in the middle column? For example, if I was interested in hurricanes, computers, business, and ... reptiles? I would place those in the middle column. Counter-vandalism and the like can also be included (maintenance should be used as the general term). The more interests, the better, since adoptees can learn more about you and choose the one they feel most comfortable working with. The information about when you're most active and other stuff can go into the "Notes" section to the right.

Finally, I've gone around and asked adoptees (and will in the future) to fill in a short survey so adopters can take the initiative and contact users they feel comfortable working with. We all know that most adoptees just place the adopt me template on their user page and leave it - so it's up to us to approach them and offer adoption. So, please take a look at the survey, adopt those that fit your interests, and maybe watchlist it so you can see the interests of adoptees and adopt one that fits your interests in the future.

Once again, thank you for participating in the adopt-a-user program! If you wish to respond to this post, please message me on my talk page.

Looking for an adopter :D

[edit]

Hey :)

Recently got the urge to contribute to Wikipedia, the guilt must have piled up since I've been relying on the site MASSIVELY over the past few years, it's my number 1 visited site lol. Anyways, I've tried to contribute a bit before, mostly very tiny edits and I think I reverted one or two acts of vandalism :P The most I've done was create one little page. I'd love to contribute more but Wikipedia seems to be HUGE and some help would certainly be of use.

I'd probably be most interested in the video games, anime and programming/computers wikiprojects as my interests lie there but I'd also love to be able to work on astronomy/physics articles in the future, my knowledge at the moment is just not enough :P

I decided to pick you since I'm also Canadian (Well by passport at least lol) and live in Dubai, UAE (Although I hate the place xD). Difference is that I'm originally from Iraq. Surprisingly I'm also 17 so at least we have that much in common!

Would love to be adopted by someone experienced so if you don't mind, please adopt me :D I'm looking to become a long-term (possibly for life) contributor so no bailing out is gonna happen :P

Now to go and start a user page!

TidusBlade (talk) 14:50, 22 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the welcome!
Didn't think of it as a ship lol, more like people just did whatever they felt was fun to do. Surprised me that a lot of people enjoyed reverting vandalism and such stuff since it doesn't really appeal to me, although that's not to say it's a useless job, they get my respect for running things behind the scene. Don't even remember the last time I saw a vandal, well I do, but it was a LONG time ago :P
Ok well, time for the questions, sadly they're not very technical (yet) :P Firstly, was wondering how do you send messages to other people, like when you posted on my talk page I got the orange "You have a new message" bar on the top. Do you get that every time someone posts on your talk page (like I am now) or do you have to explicitly do something? Is this the main way you talk to other people on Wikipedia?
Second; Say I want to start contributing to the Video Games WikiProject, can I just start filling requests for articles so would it be a better idea to do some cleanup, get to know how to write proper articles then start?
Speaking of writing proper articles, going back to the only article I ever wrote, Ski Air Mix, can you possibly point out where it can be improved or where it's flawed. It looks awkward with the bulk of the article focusing on the gameplay, which reads just like someone's playing it. Also I see someone flagged it for being an orphan, any tips on how to improve it there?
Think that's it for now, sorry for the barrage of questions and requests ^^' Was thinking of starting a new article for Crimzon Clover as it's a shame that such a mind blowing game hasn't got a page yet but maybe I'll wait till I know what makes a good article :P
Thanks again!
TidusBlade (talk) 17:56, 22 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Haha yeah, I intend on monitoring any article I create like Big Brother, in a good way!
Thanks for the link, the 'Talk pages' page cleared it all up. Guess it just feels different since I'm so used to forums.
Be Bold, got it! Think I'll go ahead and create that article tomorrow then, getting a bit late and I know it'll take at least a few hours :P And don't worry, I'll try to reference and cite as much as I can. I only had problems before when I was writing the Ski Air Mix article since there were no reviews (except for a youtube video and amazon reviews), no guides, and barely any info. I ended up only referencing the release dates to GameFAQs which seemed appropriate since most other video game articles did that. Any tips there? Maybe I'll have to dig deeper...? Anyways, getting off topic a bit :P Thanks for the tips, gonna check them out tomorrow as well! And yeah, whenever you have some free time :)
Think I'll go roll into bed soon after an episode of something, thanks again and night, but you're probably already gone ^^'
TidusBlade (talk) 19:47, 22 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, is it just me or does offsetting the date and time not work here, or at least on talk pages? I set the Time zone to 'Asia/Dubai' in My preferences -> Date and time but it's still in GMT...
Ok, back with a few more questions xD Firstly, I uploaded a screenshot for Ski Air Mix (Not sure how to link it here, putting it betwen [[]] pastes the whole image here xD It's at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:SkiAirMixScreenshot.jpg), and left the licensing blank which resulted in a 1 month deletion notice. Added the "Non-free game screenshot" tag which seems to be all that's needed. Am I good to go there? Also, I was able to link 2 articles to the game and it seems someone did a few other links before me, is that enough for me to remove the orphan tag? Should I add it to more lists and such? There's not that much to add it to though...
Also, regarding references, is a translated game manual a valid source? I'm starting an article for Crimzon Clover and I can cite the manual for a lot of information, especially regarding gameplay, credits etc. but it's originally in Japanese, but there's a translated version online. Should I be citing the translated version or the Japanese version? Or should I link to a google translated version of the page containing the Japanese version? Quite confused here since I've seen all three being used iirc xD
TidusBlade (talk) 17:33, 23 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
lol yet another two questions. Firstly, how do I get a table of contents on my talk page? Granted, I only have 2 sections but is it automatic or ...? I tried editing yours to see the code but didn't see anything for creating a ToC...
Also, I made a mistake, I created a page for 'Crimzon clover', not 'Crimzon Clover', seems Wikipedia is case-sensitive :P From what I understood, the new page is the real page while the old one now redirects to the new one. I only want the real one since it was a mistake, is there any way to delete the 'Crimzon clover' article while keeping the proper one? There was a delete button but it seems you need to be an admin... I think I'm doing something wrong, help xD
Sorry for the flood, just feel sort of lost at the moment ^^'
