Welcome to Wikipedia!

[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia! At Wikipedia, we're all about building consensus, and using critical thinking and rational judgment to decide what the best course of action is in any situation. Although we do have so-called "policies", with the exception of a very few that are necessary for legal reasons (copyright, policy, policies relating to slandering living people, etc.), you should be aware that most of these are totally non-binding. Generally, they are simply descriptions of what has typically happened in the past, that at most are suggestions that we are not obligated to abide by. I would like to encourage you, in your dealings with others on Wikipedia, to resist the temptation to advocate a certain course of action because "the rules say so", and instead would urge you make arguments based on what serves the best interests of the encyclopedia in the given situation.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy yourself here, and I look forward to seeing what you have to contribute to our project. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me at my user talk page. Kurt Weber (Go Colts!) 15:06, 23 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Bamblerose, I see you are new here, so I will try to be kind and explain a couple mistakes you made that I fixed. I reverted a couple of your edits for the following reasons. First off, you "hijacked" the article Persian Arab and made it into something completely different, which is not OK in wikiland. It was about an ethnic group of people, not a breed of horse, so such a change is really a rude thing to do, as many other articles may link to it and they need the article to be about the same topic, even if it's edited or expanded. Second, always check a wikilink to see where it goes before you put it up, because some things don't go to obvious locations.
The next thing you need to do is always read the whole article before you add something, because quite often the material you want to add is already in there and doesn't need to be there twice. For example, when you inserted "Turkoman" into the List of horse breeds, you made two errors. One was that Turkoman leads to a disambiguation page, when the article you wanted to add was actually Turkoman horse. The second problem was that Turkoman horse was already on the list, down in the "Extinct breeds" category. So it didn't need to be in two places.
Finally, if you were wondering why there is no article on the "Persian Arabian" horse breed, that is because an article, with nearly identical wording to what you put into Persian Arab, was merged with Arabian horse quite some time ago. The reason this was done is that further research showed the source used for the old article was incorrect and unreliable; the "Persian Arabian" and the "Arabian horse" are basically the same breed (and neither one can be documented as a breed in the modern sense prior to about 700 AD). IF you disagree, you are certainly welcome to discuss the issue, but it is an old issue that has previously been addressed.
Hope you can take all this as constructive advice, I sometimes am a little harsh on new editors and I don't mean to be. There is a lot to learn here and enthusiasm is appreciated, but quality also counts. Good luck with future editing! Montanabw(talk) 22:56, 23 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
