Using Twinkle as an API

First off, I'd like to say that I'm a huge fan of the Twinkle collection of scripts. I think you've done an amazing job in creating a tool to help speed up maintenance and improve quality of Wikipedia. That said, I've always felt like there was something missing. Twinkle makes handling common maintenance tasks and vandalism easy, but what about the friendlier end of the scale? After studying the Twinkle source, I've begun creating (what will hopefully be) a collection of scripts to handle common supportive and collaborative, generally friendly, Wikipedia tasks. Not surprisingly, I call it Friendly! Currently I'm working on user space functionality, such as welcomes, barnstars, etc, but I hope to extend into article space as well to help automate tasks such as cleanup tagging. Have a look if you like, but mostly I just wanted to make sure it was alright with you if I use Twinkle as sort of an API for this development. Thanks! --Ioeth (talk contribs) 13:10, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

Oh yeah, on a sidenote, it currently only works if you're already running at least one piece of Twinkle. I'm curious if importing morebits.js in friendly.js would cause any problems if you're using both Twinkle and Friendly? --Ioeth (talk contribs) 13:12, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
as marebits.js is more of a library, it shouldn't be much of a problem. Remember that morebits.js is not a part of twinkle, though at the moment, only twinkle have used it :) It's meant to be possible to use morebits.js without twinkle. AzaToth 14:48, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
That's perfect for me, though, that morebits.js is more of a library. I'm essentially using the core Twinkle scripts as examples for writing these Friendly scripts...not actually using any of the code from them. Thanks for the reply! --Ioeth (talk contribs) 15:51, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

Twinkle bug

Was just using Twinkle and tried to request unprotection for Bay of Bengal - but it placed the request for unprotection in Wikipedia:Requests for page protection#Current requests for protection instead of Wikipedia:Requests for page protection#Current requests for unprotection, under the wrong heading. (Diff here.) Also note it puts a "." instead of a space at the end of the submitted comment, unlike in automated AfD submissions, which leads to slightly odd formatted requests. Minor bugs, but thought you might be interested to know. :) Regards, AllynJ (talk | contribs) 14:31, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

Template:pastACID

Hi, I see your name on the history for Template:pastACID, so I'll direct this question to you. On Talk:ancient Egypt our ACID was in 2006, which is the parameter that was entered into the template on the talk page, but the banner says 2007. How do we fix this? Problems with twinkle ARV - possible bug?

I've been having trouble with twinkle's ARV feature. Whenever I try to submit a report to AIV using it, twinkle says that the action was completed succesfully, however, there is never any record in AIV's history that I ever edited the page. I use firefox 2.0.0.7 and do not use Norton internet security. Also, of the two scripts listed as being used for arv, morebits.js appeared to be the only edited since the recent "restructuring" listed as occuring on WP:TW started - when I manually imported an older version (from September) into my monobook.js file in place of the new one, the problem still occured. I don't think this is a problem with my computer's personal settings because I attempted to use twinkle from 2 public computers at different locations and encountered the same problem. All other aspects of twinkle seem to work fine, however (in firefox, at least).

Is this possibly a bug with twinkle? CrazyChemGuy 00:07, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

It has occured to me since the posting of the previous comment that editing WP:AIV sometimes causes an anti-spam prompt to appear to confirm that I am not a bot. If, like the editing of semi-protected pages, this only happens to accounts less that four days old, could this be the cause of this problem? CrazyChemGuy 17:27, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
It works for me. AzaToth 18:00, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
I've looked into it a little more, and I think the fact that my account is less than 4 days old is the issue. Sorry for not thinking of that earlier!

Thanks for all your work in putting together this great tool! CrazyChemGuy 22:36, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

TW configurability

Hey there. I'd love it if I could configure the warning templates left on user talk pages by TW when I CSD an article; so I could put messages I feel fit better. Or barring that; have the old behavior of only opening the user talk for a warn tag I can then select myself. — Coren (talk) 02:07, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

I have some concerns over this template and I wanted to consult with you before taking any other action. I'm sure the motivation behind creating it was good but, as I see it, it's having a net negative effect and increasing at least my workload at CAT:CSD. Informing users of why an article was deleted is considered important by many users—I think it's very important. Though this template does contain a link to the CSD criteria at issue, it is otherwise a one size fits all template. I think it is much better when the user recives actual information on the specifics of deletion, such as is done by {{nn-warn}}, {{empty-warn}}, {{spam-warn}}, {{nothanks}} and so on. Lately this template is catching on among some newpage patrollers which brought it to my notice. Not only do I think the users who are on the receiving end of the template are missing out, but when I delete an article and see this template used, I then feel compelled to add a specific admin deletion template, such as {{nn-warn-deletion}}, where before, if the user already received a tailored CSD warning template, my further warning would be redundant. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks.--Fuhghettaboutit 15:50, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

I haven't heard from you so I have nominated the template for deletion. The discussion is at Wikipedia:Templates for deletion#Template:Db-csd-notice.--Fuhghettaboutit 00:46, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

Twinkle IP reporting

AzaToth, there's a thread at WT:AIV#Ips_reported_as_vandalism-only_accounts about editors reporting IPs as "vandalism only accounts" which doesn't make sense for obvious reasons. Most of the discussion is about educating editors to that effect, but I wonder if modifying Twinkle wouldn't be the easier way to go. Even a parenthetical message "doesn't apply to IPs" would be helpful, although ideally it would be impossible to report IPs like that. I don't have any code extensions or whatnot. I'm like the person who complains to the church lady in someone's example at ANI a few weeks ago: lots of good ideas, but no help with implementation! Anyway, what do you think?--chaser - t 08:59, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

Username reporting by Twinkle

Would you consider removing or changing the username reporting functionality in Twinkle? Over the last 9 months or so, username policy enforcement has become more and more a problematic area for Wikipedia, and there is some evidence that automatic reporting by Twinkle has contributed to the problem. Also, there have been several calls for this functionality to be removed, most recently at the 3rd MfD for WP:RFCN. I looked at the interface and it doesn't really follow the suggested practice at WP:U, since it continues to rely on specific examples for reasons, while WP:U says this should not be done. Also, since people misuse the tool, it would be good to have a warning message at least telling users to thoroughly read WP:U before reporting usernames. But I think it would be best if either the functionality was simply removed, or at least if the reason checkboxes were removed and instead users were required to manually explain why a username is a violation. Mangojuicetalk 14:50, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

There is nothing at WP:U that says that using the examples are prohibited. All choices defined by the given examples, are groupted under the fix main categories, so they are taken care of. And as the section about inappropriate usernames are under discussion, I must wait until there has been a consensus. AzaToth 14:56, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
They are examples, but not reasons. WP:U specifically says "usernames should not be considered inappropriate unless one of the 5 general reasons applies." Twinkle doesn't work that way though, from the interface, if I wasn't familiar with WP:U, I would think those are the reasons we use for names to be blocked. But much more important, IMO, is that there have been multiple calls for Twinkle to not encourage username reporting. It has been identified as part of the problem with WP:RFCN in both its 1st and 3rd MFDs, and has been mentioned in other contexts too. Do you want to open up a wider discussion about it? Mangojuicetalk 16:54, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
Let me collect some diffs for you. In addition to my request here (this is the second time), there have been comments from:Is he back? (twice), Nick, Rspeer and SamBC (multiple times), Cascadia and HighinBC, Viridae, Wimt and Eagle101 have all pointed to Twinkle's username reporting as causing difficulties, with several of those users specifically wanting the functionality shut down. Redirect of Pivot state

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Pivot state, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Pivot state is a redirect to a non-existent page (CSD R1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Pivot state, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Twinkle Bug in twinklexfd.js

I'm a VandalProof user, and it appears that an extraneous comma in twinklexfd.js is causing a JavaScript error to be thrown at me from within VP. It's on line 11376, character 81...the last entry in the hashmap definition has a comma after it when it shouldn't. I'd really appreciate it if you could remove it so VP won't throw that script error at me anymore. Thanks! --Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 14:55, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

Twinkle bug: Sockpuppet feature

When using the sockpuppet feature, I start at the primary user's (puppetmaster) user page and activate the ARV tab. I select "Sockpuppet" enter the other users that I suspect this user is the puppetmaster for. When Twinkle places the sockpuppet template on those pages, it incorrectly uses that user's name in the template rather than that of the puppetmaster. It also doesn't place the puppetmaster template on the primary user's user page. Let me know if you need any more details! Thanks! --Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 14:57, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

Combining WP:TWINKLE (warn) with WP:FRIENDLY

Hi, I know you have previously mentioned that TW will not incorporate any warning templates outside of the uw-* range. However, I think it will be beneficial for the community to have one single extensible warning tool. I have made a suggestion for an enhancment to WP:FRIENDLY to allow user configurable tags. However, I'm wondering whether a similar customisation layer can be incorporated into TW to allow users to configure additional templates for warning/tagging articles. It will mean you don't have to maintain the templates, just the interface. How does that sound? → AA (talk) — 16:16, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

Here's a quick hack to show how it could work (I'm not a JS native - so there will undoubtedly be a better way to do this :). If multiple subcategories could be supported rather than a single one (e.g. instead of custom, allow userdefined customwarn, customtag, customxxx, etc) it would allow better organisation also. It could be used like this. What do you think, worthy of integrating into TW? → AA (talk) — 17:17, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

Tweaking Twinkle

Hi AzaToth. I hope you don't mind if I suggest an idea that would be helpful for the (few) of us who clean up Category:Images on Wikimedia Commons. One particularly annoying task occurs when the Commons version of the image is under a different name which means that all instances of the image have to be renamed individually. I suppose it wouldn't be a big deal to add a Twinkle feature for this by adapting the code used to delete backlink orphans. Of course, there is a higher potential of someone mass-replacing a picture of Queen Elizabeth by a giant penis but maybe we can think of safeguards to avoid abuse. For instance, this could be an option only available when you delete the image, so at least it would be admin-only. Pascal.Tesson 22:35, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

All of the Twinkle templates are now posted

I just finished. See Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion/Templates. The only criteria that don't have separate templates are U1 and U2 because no warning would ever be needed. The first is self-requested by the user for deletion of a page they made so they don't need to be told, and the second is for a non-existent userpage, so it's author doesn't exist to warn.--Fuhghettaboutit 13:04, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

I am concerned about the unprotection of template:unreferenced.
