Welcome![edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia, Atamari/Archive Aug 2008! My name is Ryan, aka Acetic Acid. I noticed that you were new and haven't received any messages yet. I just wanted to see how you were doing. Wikipedia can be a little intimidating at first, since it uses different formatting than other sites that use HTML and CSS. In the long run, though, you'll find that the WikiSyntax is a lot easier and faster than those other ways. Here are a few links to get you started:

Gambia photos[edit]

WOW, you've been busy! Sorry it's taken me so long to look at your posted pictures—I've been in Costa Rica for the past two weeks. Did you stay at the Senegambia Hotel? Some of the photos of the grounds look familiar! Most of the photos are correctly identified, but there are a couple of mistakes.
  • Turdus pelios 006, 007 and 008 are actually Yellow-billed Shrikes (Corvinella corvina). That dark mask across the eye is a good field mark, as is the long tail and shorter, broader bill.
  • Most of the pictures labeled African Silverbill are actually Grey-headed Sparrows (Passer griseus). Silverbills don't show such strong contrast between the head and back—but the grey head and rich, red-brown wings are a good field mark for the sparrows. The three pictures labeled Longchura cantans 0005, 0006 and 0007 aren't Grey-headed Sparrows either. I suspect they might be Spotted Flycatchers (Musicapa striata), but the resolution isn't good enough for me to tell for sure.

The photo labelled 0002 looks like a female Village Indigobird (flatter head and different bill), but the others look good for Northern Red Bishop. You'll have to go back in the breeding season sometime—they're spectacular then! MeegsC | Talk 17:10, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nope! These appear to be Western Grey Plantain-eaters, which show those big white wing stripes, as well as a banana-yellow bill and streaked underparts. MeegsC | Talk 17:14, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fajara[edit]

I would argue that the Medical Research Council is located in Fajara, not Bakau. It's on the same road as Fajara Army Barracks, and is nearer to Fajara than to Bakau. Annatto (talk) 08:43, 10 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think, Fajara is a former independent village like the sursub of Serekunda (Latrikunda, Dippa Kunda, Eboe Town, Jeshwang, and so on).

Africell[edit]

I'm in London. Is there a thriving Wikipedia community in Deutschland?

I've noticed that we've worked on similar articles, in English and German. You did some work on Africell. I placed this tag the English page: {{Expert-subject|Technology|documentation|date=March 2009}}

But I notice that the German page has some fairly detailed technological information on it. I wonder whether you'd be interested in translating it for me so that I can improve the English page?

The german wiki is the second largest, with over 700.000 articels and 500 articels about Gambia. Mostly written by me - see my Project page.
The german version of Africell is two years old. For simple translation, you can use Google translator

The plural is definitely dalasis (with lower case "d" in English), as it appears on the banknotes. I can't say that I've ever noticed people using dalasi as a plural.
I hadn't thought of using Google translator. I will certainly do so.
A question for you: When I first started going to Gambia I had a lot of difficulty understanding the accent, and sometimes still do. Being a non-native English speaker, do you find it difficult?
What first brought you to Gambia - I'm guessing you're a birdwatcher? I first went in 2001 and have been back many many times. It's a wonderful place. Annatto (talk) 20:18, 14 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps it's a (my) german error, we didn't say "Marks" (old currency) and no "Euros". Mostly we say dollar (also for plural).
I have somewhat fewer problems to understand African English, because they tend speaking word-for-word. I think the sentence melody is not so strong. But my luck is that I met a gambian citizen with resident in Germany and we travel two times to Gambia. --Atamari (talk) 23:58, 14 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, just a note. Gambia project assessment use the Africa Project Template:AfricaProject. For Gamibia national project assessments where there is already an existing AfricaProject tag, please don't add an additional

tag, as this duplicates the Africa Project assessment. Please edit the existing Africa project tag to include a Gambia assessment. So for example, you entered on Talk:Balafon:

This duplicates the Africa project assessment. This should be changed to:

In short the QUALITY assessment (Stub, Start, B, etc) are universal. The IMPORTANCE tags are BOTH for Africa Project AND the seperate national projects.
