Martijn Tellinga (the Netherlands, 1974) is a sound artist, composer, and occasional performer. His practice traverses a wide range of media and expressive approaches. It is largely formed and informed by notions of system & entropy and spatial mediations using sound and acoustical principles. It roughly stems from traditions of minimalism, conceptualism and serialism and loosely borrows from concepts as emergence, complexity and non-linearity. It is explorative of a.o. poetic and aural abstractions of space & environment, (self affecting) organizational processes, chance structures, site specific formations, acoustic phenomena & auditory perception, and creating density through rudimentary musical and performative principles.

Originally a composer of musique concrète (works up until 2004 were released under the moniker 'Boca Raton') [1], he completed his electronic music/computer music studies at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague (2003 – 2007) with a Master's Degree in Sonology. Studying under Paul Berg and Kees Tazelaar, the topics of his research were; compositional modeling, formalization, algorithmic composition, sound and spatiality [2].

Following graduation at the Sonology Institute his work steadily moved away from both the sonic and technological means & ends that had governed it until then towards the development of open ended scoring and event procedures. His works increasingly became characterized by exploration of self developed performance and listening systems, realized by instrumental musicians and performance artists, at times requesting audience members to perform as well. His scores are mostly prose based, though often employing a graphical notation language as well. Commonly indeterministic in nature, these require an active research into their performative potential from the side of the performer. Since 2011, performances of his work have been predominantly acoustic instead of electronic or electro-acoustic.

Parallel with this shift in media, his work became of an increasingly sculptural and visual nature, now enfolding elements of the music concert, performance art, (performance) installation, public space intervention, extended duration works, audience participation pieces and documentary-type works based on site specific exploration of architecture, acoustics and environmental dynamics.

His work has been presented worldwide with residencies, lectures, performances and exhibitions in; the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, Poland, Sweden, Finland, UK, Austria, Swiss, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Israel, Russia, USA, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Australia, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, China. Notable venues and organizers that programmed his work are; Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ (Amsterdam), Sonic Acts Festival (Amsterdam), The Night of the Unexpected (Amsterdam), W139 (Amsterdam), NIMk (Amsterdam), Gaudemus Muziekweek (Amsterdam), Soundtrack City (Amsterdam), Huis aan de Werf (Utrecht), Netwerk Gallery (Aalst), Q-02 (Brussels), Césare (Reims), Kasseler Dokfest (Kassel), ZKM (Karlsruhe), Tesla (Berlin), Errant Bodies Project Space (Berlin), Dampfzentrale (Bern), Audio Art Festival (Krakow), Fylkingen (Stockholm), Geiger Festival (Gothenburg), Tate Liverpool (Liverpool), Casa da Musica (Porto), Pro Arte Foundation (St Petersburg), Headlands Center for the Arts (San Francisco), Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (New York), Banff centre (Banff), conDIT (Buenos Aires), CMMAS (Morelia), Laboratorio Arte Alameda (Mexico City), Tura New Music (Perth), Perth International Arts Festival (Perth), IMA (Brisbane), Korean Film Archive (Seoul), SuperDeluxe (Tokyo), CAFA Art Museum (Beijing), Beijing Design Week (Beijing), Chengdu Biennale (Chengdu), Rockbund Art Museum (Shanghai), The Modern Academy (Hong Kong) and Hong Kong Art Fare.

Continuous collaborators are DNK [amsterdam], the Now now (Sydney), Hong Kong New Music ensemble, conDIT/cheLA (Buenos Aires), Liminar ensemble (Mexico). His practice has consistently been supported by the Mondriaan Fonds, the Fonds Podiumkunsten en Dutch Embassies abroad.

Since 2006 he has been involved in DNK [amsterdam], curating and producing the series together with Koen Nutters, Seamus Cater and André Avelãs. In 2015 DNK [amsterdam] produced ‘Nearly Not There’, a one month exhibition showing a continuous permutation of sound works at the Amsterdam Gallery W139. [3] Since 2014, he is visiting professor at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing, China teaching graduate courses. In 2016 he was guestlecturer at The Modern Academy in Hong Kong. [4]

He lives and works in Amsterdam (the Netherlands) and Beijing (China).
