Stability of Kolkata

I do not know really. Let us wait for a few more days before audio. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 09:09, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

Re:template

Hmmm...I have a suggestion to make regarding the template - why don't we include the other advanced institutions like NITs, IIMs into the template? Basically all "see also" topics and forks like "History of IITs" should also be covered. Rama's Arrow 05:22, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

SAC

Ambuj, this india SAC list needs attention. I mean articles should be moved to SA. However, due to less voting, its difficult to decide if we ourselves should do the work. For example, Chola Dynasty would be FA very soon. It's bad if we do not promote it to India SA soon.

Some articles like K. M. Nanavati vs. State of Maharashtra, K. R. Narayanan - no one should object in case those are promoted to SA list. What do you think? I think we can contact an Indian admin. May be Saravask, the newest one! Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 05:28, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

I hope Chola Dynasty will get a long list of Support...It looks great. Like the Kolkata FAC. In fact, hereafter we should work in such a way that all India FACs find only supports! May be difficult though!! What's plans in IIT? Is your exams over? Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 05:33, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
Well, yes you are right. More Indian s should be there in FAC procedures. I think aboute 15 people are already almost regular. If that count goes to 30, it will be nice. After you are done with IIT, have a look of Darjeeling also. I am becoming busy with studies. Will be free after June 10. Will push the article then. Patel should be up for FAC as well soon. So is Ahmedabad (may be a few days later). So its going to be a hot summer. Bye.--Dwaipayan (talk) 05:40, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

coin

Yeah, though it says that the script is Devnagari, the script on the coin has uncanny similarity with Bengali script. May be because it was from Sri lanka. There is some dispute, but often it is sain "Sinhala" came from "Vijaysingha", an Indian prince who arrived at the present Sri Lanka. I have read in "History of Bengali literature" (in our school texts) that this Vijaysingha was from Bengal-Orisa region. In fact, there is a famous line of a poem (I forgot the writer) Banglar chele bijaysingho helay Lanka korilo joy, meaning, Vijaysingha, son of Bengal, won Lanka easily.

This line is not used to portray the history though. It is rather used in an ironical sense. The usual sayings of the Bengalis - that we were famous in past, that we did so and so - this line is satirically used to refer to this attitude. However, even this idiom is gradually disappearing from usage.

Anyway, the coin is really intersting. Its eerie. LoL. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 06:00, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

new temp

Hi - look better? Lemme know if there are any issues. Rama's Arrow 06:29, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

Yes its ok to link cats. The italicized links are to festivals and programs at IITs, plus the book. These are better distinguished this way. Rama's Arrow 06:40, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
Btw - I believe there is a problem with many of the forks you or someone else has created. Except for the book "The IITians," the articles of history and reservation policy should contain the full name "Indian Institutes of Technology," because there is the page for IIT is a disambig, and "History of IITs" could correctly apply for any of the disambig links. Please correct this, although I doubt the FAC will be affected. Rama's Arrow 06:45, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
I don't believe there's a need to remove schools of management, becoz they are a part of those family IITs, not independent institutions. Please create the Culture central article prior to FAC. Will fix the other issue. Rama's Arrow 06:49, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
No I don't think there is a need to rename the cat. That's different becoz cats don't have disambigs. Rama's Arrow 06:59, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

adminship

Hi - I know you're busy with FAC on IITs and that you're young on WP, but would you be interested in an RfA, say in early June? Your work is developing in the right direction, and I'd just like to know your views and goal. Rama's Arrow 07:08, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

Yeah I want to become an admin, but I'm reorganizing my work as per the advice I received on editor review, as well as my own vision. Will take it up pretty soon though. Rama's Arrow 07:27, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

thanks

The Spoken Barnstar
I thank Ambuj for helping out with audio files for Kolkata and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and for other articles, and award him this Spoken Barnstar. Keep up the great work! Rama's Arrow 07:34, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

IITs

I won't be having the time to review this weekend unfortunately. It's close, but not up to FA standards as yet. I still have a lot of issues with the article including page size, lack of printed references prose etc. Basic question that needs to be addressed: Why is the government reluctant to increase the number of IITs? Dates like these: "1 October" needs to be wikified. I would like to see the following before I review:

  • A pie graph (colourful) of the breakup of reservations
  • Pic of a classroom if possible?
  • Graph on rankings?

=Nichalp «Talk»= 09:21, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

1. About the dates: Bobblewik unwikified the year, not the date. Wikifying a date (Month-Date) is necessary as it displays the dates according to a user's preference: "1 October" or "October 1". You can change this setting in your preferences section. 2. The debate over the increase of IITs would make an interesting read. 3. Pie chart would be the visual representation of data: For example see Featured article Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport. 4. I'll think about graph and let u know. =Nichalp «Talk»= 10:45, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
Hmm... the photo might me difficult the get. How about sitting in the last row and taking one in class? And one in the labs (should be easier). I hope my suggestions don't get you into trouble though ;)

About: uploading media: NO you cannot do that! Freely available on the internet *does not* co-relate to GFDL content. The original must be GFDL as stated by the creator. As for the chart, yes, I would prefer it. =Nichalp «Talk»= 15:39, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

The pie chart on reservations is not correct; there is 22.5% reservations and actually about 10-12% is filled. the remaining is not filled by general candidates but is left vacant. so, your 'actual' pie chart should show sc, st and vacant (to make up to 22.5%). Iitmsriram 07:50, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

thanks, and a few points

Hi Ambuj - thanks for the thumbs-up. I appreciate it.

I think there's one issue in the formatting of the notes - see Kolkata, where the authors for the respective articles cited are noted before the weblink. I think this should be done here. Also, if you don't mind, I'm gonna move the reservation policy section into the admissions sections - subject is connected - and the student life section above the criticisms. Rama's Arrow 18:42, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

I hope the re-formatting meets with your approval. To add - please expand the intro of the "recognition" section (just a few more sentences) and the "Alumni" section please (that's important, and I think there's more information that should be there). Rama's Arrow 18:48, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
I moved the map out becoz that section was over-crowded and poorly formatted owing to the pics. Yeah the IIT culture fork is a good one and important. You are feeling a little off prolly becoz this is your first FA - this type of work is difficult to do when you have an active, main-priority life and if there are wikibreaks, etc. After the inevitabilities of the first FAC, the next experience is better owing to planning, organization and having a sense of what is necessary.
I find it easiest to write FAs on topics I have books at home at. You IIT people could give WP a lot of FAs in engineering, science and maths. Trying writing FAs on your line of focus. Rama's Arrow 05:50, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
See Kolkata's referencing. Yes it is the Harvard-style, although a couple others are also accepted. Rama's Arrow 09:32, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

Chart

3 things:

  1. Since the image has English text, it should be hosted in en wiki, not commons. I have admin rights in commons, and so can delete it if so required.
  2. Figures absent. What does each colour represent?
  3. Brighter pastel shade colours could be used. See the colours used in Economy of India.

PS: Recognition can be renamed as per your suggestion. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 11:17, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

IIT article

Hey, great job with polishing this article. It is starting to look like a FA candidate! Maybe go for another review? --Blacksun 00:05, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

Hi Ambujbhai - I'm very sorry to have disappointed your expectation in me, but it had become impossible for me to compromise my principles. I don't covet adminship at all, so it wasn't a difficult decision. However, I cannot tell you how greatly joyous I feel at the enthusiastic, wonderful support you expressed for me. I don't know how hard it will be to understand that your supports means extremely a lot to me. I thank you from my heart, and please let me know if I can ever be assistance or help in anything.

Yes the IIT references are perfect. I hope the "Alumni" section is circumspect as per the info you possess. Rama's Arrow 19:50, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

In fact, can you please do the same on references for Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel? I'm unclear on exactly how to go about it. Rama's Arrow 04:08, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

Reply

Hi Ambujbhai - Your doubts are legitimate, but I give the example of articles like Rabindranath Tagore, Mahatma Gandhi, Hugo Chavez. These articles are inherently above 60kb. If the article is comprehensive, that is more important than size. So I don't think that you should worry about size. If you can reduce by slashing long-winded sentences and "unnecessary information," do it. But it doesn't doom an FAC if the article's size is above 50kb. Rama's Arrow 04:33, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

and for the barnstar

Ambujbhai - I cannot thank you enough for your support. This whole month has been very joyous for me in realizing how much kind support and encouragement I've received from my friends. My only hesitation in withdrawing the RFA was whether I was letting people who had put so much faith in me, down.

I want to serve Wikipedia. I don't need admin tools to do that, and I won't be selling my soul, allowing people to misrepresent me, to get any privileges here or elsewhere. I'm also very happy that you have a character immune temptations. We must always keep building a solid character able to do thankless jobs. Rama's Arrow 04:37, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

Everytime I read your message, I feel like writing yet another note to make sure you realize how grateful I am to you. Thanks a gazillion, man! Whenever for whatever you may need help, just gimme a bell. I'll be only too honored. Rama's Arrow 04:40, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

Patel

Yo - thanks a million! The 2 stands for volume 2. I'll fix that soon. Rama's Arrow 06:00, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

name confirm

Hi Ambuj - just one thing to verify - are you sure that the official names of the IITs in Mumbai and Chennai are still "Bombay" and "Madras?" Rama's Arrow 13:33, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

Btw, if you feel you've covered your ground, don't hesitate to go for FAC. Any remaining criticism and improvement will only be done there now. Rama's Arrow 13:34, 15 May 2006 (UTC)
Cool. Rama's Arrow 13:37, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks. I appreciate the guidance and support. I'm still getting used to the mode of deletions and nominations. Thank you very much for the assistance. I need it very badly - 7258 14:22, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

Hi there. User:Arthur Rubin has added the "{{prod}}" template to the article 105263157894736842 (number), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion (see Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Importance). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, or, if you disagree, discuss the issues raised at Talk:105263157894736842 (number). If you remove the {{dated prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. I hope you're not going to create 1016949152542372881355932203389830508474576271186440677966 (number). It might be better to have an entry on k-parasitic numbers (see OEIS A092697 and [1]) and let 105263157894736842 redirect to there. --LambiamTalk 20:45, 15 May 2006 (UTC)
I've renamed n-parasitic number to parasitic number. (Even in the talk pages on Wikipedia, I've seen "j-", "k-", and "n-".) I think this an excelent solution, although I still find the redirect questionable, as it would not be deleted under the guidelines. (Can redirects be in a category? I don't think so.) — Arthur Rubin | (talk) 14:13, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

RfA

Hey, thanks for pointing that out. I checked it as minor since all of my important contributions to my nomination were on the subpage, and I didn't realize that it wouldn't show up in the history of WP:RfA. Adding myself to the page only involved copying someone else's nom and substituting my username for his, so I considered it minor. I guess if other people don't think so, then next time I'll leave at as a regular edit. Also, I've withdrawn my nomination, for the reasons stated on the RfA page. Again, thanks for your comments! --M1ss1ontomars2k4 | T | C | @ 22:30, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

I can do a light copyedit today. But, in order to do proper justice, I'll have time only next week. Meanwhile, I'd want you to go for a peer review to get others' opinion as well. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 06:11, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

Vandalism reporting

Hi Ambuj, thanks for the tip... Will report the way u suggested ramit 18:32, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

Fair use

Fair use is a very complicated issue on WP. Most of it is caused my people who do not understand what is fair use. I have very tough time explaining users what it is and what is required. I myself took about half a year to realize some of the complexities of fair use. For a fact, I still don't know much about it. Also, fair use images are very convenient; the temptation to use them is extremely high. Most of the time no free alternative could be obtained. Also, WP does not have a short & sweet & easy to read tutorial/intoroduction about fair use and other copyright issues.

I remember reading somewhere a post that fair use should not have "download a high resolution version." And I agree. If I spot something like this, I would donwload it, use some picture program, scale it down and re-upload under the same name.

The magnitude is humongously giantnormous :) I spent a couple of days looking through some pics on WP... and I almost want to cry. Fair use logos are spammed everyhere, fair use screenshots are claimed public domain, magazine covers illustrate magazine models, etc etc etc. I haven't seen this week a fair use pic with a rationale. A gazillion of pictures don't have sources, descriptions, or have wrong copyright info. I would not be too surprised if after a very careful cleaning up, WP would be left with 15-20% of all the pics it has now.

What do I suggest? I was asking myself this question... The magnitude is simply... overwhelming. I think the biggest problem is education of users. They are very quick to shout "Copyright paranoia!" You could be spending years on removing fair use pics and they will still add them back (either because they don't believe WP should be so strict on fair use or because of simple ignorance). So I have a ton of half-baked ideas... For example, sweet & short tutorial/intorduction or exam/test/quiz.

But I don't think that is really what you are asking (I feel I need to vent a little, sorry :)). Renata 10:21, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

Hi! Yes the portal is in bad shape. Its ok that you have taken the initiative. Go on and maintain the portal, do not wait for the consensus. We know what are better for wikipedia. I may sound autocratic, but in time of need, one may have to take contrl. I have exams on June. Still I will try to help u as far as possible. Please menrain the today's featured article. The black box is a ghostly box. I can't figure out how it appeared here. Strange, the file should be easily editable. Have you tried CTRL+CLICK? The article needs a thorough copyedit before submitting. I tried making an SVG graph, but inkscape crashed on me :(. I'll be making a locator map 4 u. Get it copyedited and then submit it for FAC. I won't be online much till June. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 15:32, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the fixes. Some tips:
  • If creating any new text make sure that you select the text and click on Text>Unflow in the file menu. If the unflow is not done, the text won't be rendered by mediawiki.
  • Always use generic fonts such as Sans, Serif, Fantasy and Cursive. Sans is ideal for diagrams.
  • If tracing a document from a bitmap, ensure that the bitmap is stored on a new layer and locked. After completion, delete the layer which contains the bitmap.
  • Add metadata to the document in File>Document Preferences
PS It's your turn on PINQ. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 06:06, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

IIT Article

Sure Ambuj. Most probably I'll do it in the evening. deeptrivia (talk) 13:18, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

Ambuj, if you're not getting any particular points to fix up, you might as well go for FAC - any poignant criticism will only come from there now. Also, you should ask for help from non-Indian editors (since Indian experts seem to be mostly on break) like Taxman, Ragib, etc. I say you should go for FAC, and fix the problems cited. Its just a process and not an election. Rama's Arrow 00:21, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

I've done some spelling and grammar corrections. The article is looking good, but of course, there are going to be many things to take care of during the nomination. So be prepared! deeptrivia (talk) 03:38, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

Break

Hi Ambuj! I am taking a wikibreak. However, if you put up IIT fot FAC shortly, please send me a mail. I dont want to be in such a break that would rid me of the fun! Anyway, thanks for your effort in the Portal: India and selected articles etc. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 06:01, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

PS I was thinking to start an article on the anti-reservation protests. But could not start due to the huge time commitment it would demand. I expanded the article on Other Backward Class yesterday. There should be a current event article on the protests. See if you can help.

IIT FAC

Hi - yes of course, you can count on my aid to tackle any issues. I'll have another look at the article now. Rama's Arrow 16:05, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

Yes, clustering was a (former) issue. I'm working section-by-section. Before entering for FAC, please check my copyedits. Rama's Arrow 19:54, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
An important thought: I wonder if there should be a section on what/how things are taught at IIT - like what technology (computers, etc.) is used, what progressive teaching philosophy/methods are employed, what about internship, research projects. What is the balance between theory and practicals? How much coaching, mentorship is available. What subjects apart from science/math/engineering are emphasized as careers? Does IIT provide students with laptops? Sorta like the education culture which actually makes IITs great places. What do you think? Rama's Arrow 19:54, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
Ah! That is called dropping a bomb-shell. Poor Ambuj. Nice points BTW. - Aksi_great (talk) 20:12, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
But the points could be different and special for each IIT. It could take up a lot of space on the main IIT page. - Aksi_great (talk) 20:13, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
Marwaoge is the right word :) - Aksi_great (talk) 20:15, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
Yup. Saw that just after I posted. - Aksi_great (talk) 20:16, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
HAHAHAHA....well most of the points you raise are prolly original research, so never mind. I would like a sentence on the internship bit - that's important. I think the map has to be big and clearly visible, so I think the present arrangement is best suitable (dunno why Nichalp was insisting on placing the map within the section, as it was obviously cramped). Rama's Arrow 20:21, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
Could you please check recognition, especially the rankings section. First off, I think the reasons given on surveys that didn't rank IIT well sounds like bitching. If you list the criterias of the disapproving surveys, you'll need to describe the approving surveys as well. Rama's Arrow 20:42, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
Also, the sentence should not be written like "this is due to the following reasons." Rama's Arrow 20:44, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

That's fine; I've responded to your post and am about to leave work. I won't have internet until tomorrow (probably somewhere around 16-24 hrs from now). I hope my comments are helpful—I know it's a pain when people criticize your work, but hopefully as a result we'll end up with a better article. --Spangineer[es] (háblame) 21:24, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

Misunderstood

Yep, that was a misunderstanding in Vkvora's talk page. Its clear now. IIT is gonna be FA very quickly. Its great with 2 sure shot Indian FACs (Patel and IIT) there. Kochi and Ahmedabad is also getting readied quickly. We should cross the half century mark by the year end! Bye.--Dwaipayan (talk) 20:23, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

It's great that you use inline reference for your user page. Wonderful. In fact, IMO, all claims/facts in WP should be so. However, you cannot make it a rule though! You example inspires me to do the same! Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 09:28, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

IIT Dilbet pic removed

Hi Ambuj - Cedar has removed the Dilbert pic saying that FU doesn't apply when the article is not about Dilbert. I've already informed Nicholas of this, and asked him to provide a proper rationale. Rama's Arrow 04:27, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

Yes the strip should be there.--Dwaipayan (talk) 09:26, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

Inotes etc

Both are accepted in WP. However, inotes are not encouraged. It is a good way to remove cluttering though. I mean if there is too many citation supersctipts in an article, some may be converted to inotes, in order to help the free flow of reading. I thgink you followded the FARC of India when Nichalp told about these things.--Dwaipayan (talk) 09:42, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

Kolkata had a few inotes. Only the reference website were given, no more was written in the inotes. For example, see civic administration in Kolkata, the very last line, in edit mode.--Dwaipayan (talk) 09:47, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

Hi Ambuj - I request that if you have more free time from the IIT FAC, that you please help at this article, which I think bears some major problems. We need your input on how to rectify this problem. Rama's Arrow 18:36, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

Thank you

Thanks. The article looks much better now than the last time I saw it (a few months back?) - looks like you have put in a lot of effort. Cheers. -Cribananda 18:51, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

Buddhism

Hi, thanks for the heads up. I have vowed in the past that I will do some work on Buddhism, but, unfortunately, I don't have the free time to commit to that project. I shall someday. - Nat Krause(Talk!) 03:27, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

Indian english

Indian English is modelled on British English. Just to brief you on what is considered correct for IE spellings:

  • -our vs -or (colour/color) : Use -our
  • -lled vs -led (labelled/labeled) : use -lled
  • (-ise vs -ize) (italicise/italicize) : both are acceptable. The -ise is commonly used in BE, --ize is used in academic publications, and by AmE almost exclusively. --Nichalp 08:38, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

Copyeditor

Glad to help out. As for Tony, I was actually talking about User:Tony1—he's a professional writer, and a really good editor. It's extremely rare for him to support an FAC nomination right away, because he always finds lots of minor problems (heh, and you thought I was bad =). However, he's usually pretty busy, so he might not get a chance to take a look at this one. --Spangineer[es] (háblame) 12:38, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

Yup! Tony is the best. He copyedited Nepal and Bhutan for me before I had submitted them for FAC. =Nichalp «Talk»= 17:54, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

Railways

I'm a bit too busty to write stuff these days, shouldn't the lead in suffice for now? =Nichalp «Talk»= 17:54, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

File:Atlanticpuffin4.jpg Hello Ambuj. Thank you for your support and defense of me at request for adminship which ended with the overwhelming and flattering result of (160/1/0), and leaves me in a position of having to live up to a high standard of community expectation. If you need help with an admin related task, feel free to ask me if I make any procedural mistakes, feel free to point them out. Also, thankyou for the birthday wishes and I just noticed from reading your userpage in detail that you too are a former Physics and Chemistry olympiad person. Of course, I look forward to working with you in the future. Blnguyen | Have your say!!! 05:29, 29 May 2006 (UTC)
