SkinEnforcer[edit]

Thank you for producing SkinEnforcer. I need it to stay sane when browsing Wikipedia whilst logged out. Please can you add some instructions for using the script when logged out? Certes, you're welcome. For any onlookers who are wondering: User:Alexis Jazz/SkinEnforcer. TamperMonkey/Greasemonkey is a requirement as enwiki doesn't have a script with the functionality of AnonLoader enabled by default. I can't think of an easier way really. The home page for Tampermonkey is a good place to start. (Greasemonkey is similar but I've not used it for years.) You'll need to either know JavaScript or be ready to copy and paste from a suitably licensed source written by someone you trust. I'm busy at the moment and haven't had time to get it working on Firefox yet, but I'll post a how-to when I do. Often, the difficult bit is getting the code to run at the right time. Certes, indeed. The code I used for the timing in Greasemonkey is very ugly and still incorporates a forced delay. It'll largely boil down to 
var myIntScript = setInterval(function () { clearInterval(myIntScript); mw.loader.load('//en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Alexis_Jazz/SkinEnforcer.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript'); }, 3000);

I should have recommended disabling "Anonymous statistics" in the Tampermonkey settings. Other data gathering for both Tampermonkey and Greasy Fork seems to be the usual logs of visiting their websites rather than from using the add-on itself, and seems reasonably minimal compared with the web's (admittedly very poor) privacy norms. The script itself is just JavaScript which can (and should) easily be audited before copy-pasting. CX Zoom, it's there alright, but Vector-2022 changed where the menu is. There's a "Tools" link next to history now in which you'll find the gadget link. IIRC the gadget link is tied to the special pages link, it should be relocated but I have too much on my mind. The gadget links (when the gadget menu is expanded) look a bit malformed now as this menu is rather different from how it was but should still be functional. Modifications to MediaWiki:Vector-2022.js to set unlimited width as the default[edit]

Hi,

I've been looking into how to modify this js file to implement unlimited width as the default, following the WMF's declaration that they intend to ignore the consensus to do so. I believe it is possible, by interpreting "limited-width-toggle-on" (from class "mw-ui-icon mw-ui-icon-element mw-ui-button vector-limited-width-toggle") as "limited-width-toggle-off" and vice-versa, but I've been unable to work out how to do this.

I believe you're quite experienced at these sorts of problems; if you have time could you please look into it?

I believe that there is another alternative, which would be unlimited width for everyone, and that would likely be easier to implement, but I if we can avoid that solution I think it would be better to do so. BilledMammal (talk) 07:39, 26 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

For anons; for logged in users I'm less concerned, as the WMF is planning to provide a mandatory (and hopefully neutrally worded) choice. If I understand what you are suggesting correctly (update the css based on the opposite of what the button class says it is) that is what I am thinking of doing; my issue is that it's been a long time since I've used JS and have been unable to work out how to implement it in the mediawiki environment. Importing modules[edit]

Gonnym, barely, I'd have to ask my friends at Wiktionary for the most part. I was afraid of that. That amount of code for me is a bit hard to support in the Emoji discussion for it to be a viable option. If the option of small stubs for each emoji passes (I think that was 7?), then (for me personally) I think manually with some Wikidata support would be better than all that. While I understand and write Lua code, I don't see me going all over that code to change something. I doubt anyone here would (but I might be proven wrong). I didn't say it's hard. It's just that you've imported over 50 modules for one simple feature. I find that amount of code completely insane. Gonnym, um, most of those are very simple static lists like Module:Unicode data/images/01F to find the associated .svg on Commons. That's the price for people who dislike Wikidata and insist on keeping shit local. It's part of Module:Unicode data which we already had.
I've reworked User:Alexis Jazz/Emoji to include all the information from {{Character info}} and all the Unicode module stuff has Wikidata fallbacks. And Module:EmojiWiktionaryCheck is my own work so that should be fine, no? 🤡 — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 15:08, 24 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

German influence on Soviet rocketry[edit]

Thanks for your idea on RSN using your own cloud .... Surely, I'd like to hand over the documents to "a reliable source so they can write about it and verify their authenticity". Except for the Zvezda 70 Years (1946-2016) all other documents are publicly available since long but were obviously not really analyzed by the main scholars such as Asif Siddiqi and Michael Neufeld as they are available in German only and out of print, such as Gröttrup (1958), Gröttrup (1959), Albring (1991) and Magnus (1993). Also Uhl's Stalins V-2 (1997) and Mick's Forschen für Stalin (2000) are available in German only. There are incorrect quotations (or English summaries) as I detailed in talk of Soviet rocketry and the never-ending RFC discussion and survey about the lede in German influence on the Soviet space program with ilenart626.

It is also disappointing that Ordway/Sharpe's The Rocket Team (1979) which included a lot of details and research based on many primary sources (even CIA) and personal interviews. Although it is still superior to most other research, is overlaid in the prevailing discussion based on Siddiqi's Challenge to Apollo (2000) and Boris Chertok's personal memoirs Rockets and People (2005). Sometimes I feel myself like running against the iron curtain of the Cold War, due to secrecy and stubbornness of pre-conceived opinions. In many cases, Mark Wade's Encyclopedia Astronautica is closer to that knowledge than often-quoted literature. Olaf Przybilski is another expert of rocket technology who has written about the German influence - but his publications are regularly turned down by English Wikipedians as biased German or even "Nazi" view.

The current talk in Space Race is better positioned since @Neopeius has offered to ask Siddiqi (for better sources) and had a real look into my "compelling argument". If I had a choice, I would ask Anatoly Zak (unbiased author of Russian Web Space) but I don't know how to access him. You are welcome to path another way in parallel to @Neopeius and his membership in the AAS History Committee. As an avid OSC member and BFDI fan myself (obviously outside of Wikipedia), I don't think this is useful. The source assessment page clearly states "Avoid creating subpages for subjects you can reasonably know are not notable and never will be notable." BFDI is clearly not notable for inclusion for Wikipedia, and may never be, especially when the media covers less and less Internet-related topics than they did 10-15 years ago. I would recommend doing a source assessment on Cary Huang, one of the creators of the series, as there is some potential of notability in his case due to having YouTube channels (that I happen to be subscribed to) where he makes (mostly) content unrelated to BFDI getting covered by the media. — Davest3r08 >:) (talk) 22:56, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Davest3r08, I wrote the source assessment page, I know what it says! ;-) But I'll need to add some bits maybe..
First of all, BFDI could reasonably become notable someday, especially if one of both of the creators get more coverage. The series is popular enough to potentially warrant a retrospective. It's also not unthinkable that a site like Pluggedin.com would cover it, and I'm kind of surprised they haven't yet. BFDI is more than a garage band. If the videos your garage band uploads get millions of views, it's no longer a garage band and future notability is plausible.
But more important than that: it's BFDI. Obviously it needs a source assessment, even if only to show users there really are no reliable sources.

Davest3r08, they are biased, but so are many reviewers. I don't think a review has to be NPOV to contribute to notability. Imagine a book reviewer who is openly gay. Clearly biased. Are we going to ignore those reviews?
It's something to keep in mind, but my impression is that while they focus on Christian values, they still provide useful information, especially for parents. I'd expect them to note the cartoon violence and drug use for example. But I'm pretty sure Tom and Jerry did the same thing, and they covered Tom and Jerry.
