How do I officaly sign up? I am not an admin but I remove vandalism Adam1213|talk 03:04, 7 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

All you need to do is join #en.wikipedia.vandalism additionaly you can list your username on User:Cool Cat/Counter Vandalism Unit --Cool Cat Talk 16:15, 7 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Please use the {test}} templates in order - don't give a "last warning" for a first offence. On an unrelated note, please use edit summaries almost all the time, and try to give a good representation of what you are changing; it helps those who patrol for new changes. -DDerby-(talk) 23:00, 7 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Your signature

[edit]

Your signature is rather, erm, eye-catching. JIP | Talk 14:44, 8 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I was about to say the same thing. Hall Monitor 16:56, 14 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

That's a very diplomatic way of putting it, JIP. --Celestianpower hablamé 15:20, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Is there any way we could convince you to change it? It is quite distracting, and far from æsthetically pleasing.--Cyberjunkie | Talk 15:35, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to join the chorus... please change it, it's very distracting. --Ashenai (talk) 10:07, 17 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Adam, you're sig is getting longer and longer. Not only does it take a lot of space and attract a lot of attention on the pages, it also takes a lot of space when someone wants to edit a page. With lots of long sigs, it becomes harder and harder to find the text you're looking for to edit. So please don't set a bad example for other (future) Wikipedians and make your sig way smaller: both in code and in appearance. Thanks! --JoanneB 16:57, 17 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Please, please change it. Andre (talk) 17:04, 17 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I concur with everyone else asking you to change it. ~~ N (t/c) 19:07, 17 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Adam1213, I urge you. Your signature is way too long. Please change it. Ral315 WS 19:41, 17 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'll second -- or ninth or tenth, I guess -- this comment. Your signature is absurdly long, and quite apart from the trouble it causes others when trying to edit wikitext, makes you look quite ridiculous. Christopher Parham (talk) 06:37, 18 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I also agree. It is rediculously long and uses far too much code. It makes it hard to edit anything where you have left your signature. Having such a flashy sig doesn't exactly convince me of your maturity. - Pureblade | 16:04, 18 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Me too. Plus even Jimbo commented that it is over the top [1]. Please change it. the wub "?!" 16:11, 18 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have a problem with the length of your signature (that'd make me a hypocrite), but it seriously hurts my eyes to look at. Please change it. android79 16:21, 18 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Please change your sig. — Davenbelle 09:36, 19 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I ended up on your talk page somewhat randomly, but noticed this and thought I might comment; apologies if the intrusion isn't welcome. Anyway, one thing I've done with my signature is to put a <span> around it and set the span's CSS class to my username. That way, I can have my custom CSS highlight my signature just for me. So I see my sig with a nice, green background, making it easy for me to spot my comments in pages, without being distracting to other people. Just a thought! Let me know if it helps. :)HorsePunchKid 23:23, 18 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

What a nice idea and suggestion from HorsePunchKid if the intent of your sig is for your own convenience. If however, your intent is to shout out your presence to all well, mission accomplished. --hydnjo talk 04:04, 20 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Adam1213, please don't delete comments from your talk page. If you have deleted them by mistake, you should find them in the edit history and put them back. JIP | Talk 10:27, 17 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Short blocks

I've learnt not to block for too long. They start sending emails and spam the mailinglist. It's not worth it. Hopefully Jake will find something nicer to do, like terrorize a blog somewhere. JFW | T@lk 14:09, 17 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Re Admin

[edit]
  • Some advice that could help you. 1/4 of your edits are on your own user page. Edit a bit less there. Do some article wrting, cleanup, removing POV more and of course revert more vandalism. And vote your opinion in AFD and that could clearly help you alot. --JAranda | watz sup 23:07, 17 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  • More advise:
I see you want to be an admin. Follow JAranda's suggestions and I guarantee that you will make it. Also, some editors appreciate admins who are a bit responsive. Im sure that you've read Splash's (I think) comment about about your signature. Though you do not have to change it (afterall its yours), it would show others that you appreciate and listen to their comments or concerns. If I could remember the link, Id show you, but a page here said that it would be great if you did not choose a sig that shows bigger and brighter than everyone elses on a page, its annoying or it gives the impression that you are more important. Now Im not saying that you act that way, believe me, thats not my intention, Im sure that you are a cool guy, but your signature is a bit garish. My old sig was also excessively ornamented and gaudy, and when others commented on it, I changed it quickly (not because I had to, because it shows thoughtfulness). It gave others a good impression of me. Oran e (t) (c) (@) 04:35, 18 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I am making my signature shorter and have all ready improved it --Adam1213 Talk +|WWW 06:11, 18 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I have just noticed a dispute between you and several other users. I just want to tell you what I think. I am not taking sides or anything as that is not my place.

Firstly you fight vandalism well though not yet perfect but thats ok given no one is perfect. Hence there is room for improvement just like all of us.

I will be blunt below. Please do NOT take it personal, you are a valued member of the CVU and I would not want you to leave. So please dont.

  1. I noticed you give away test4's too easily. Giving a test1 prior to a test4 makes it easier for admins to block vandals. Think it this way, this destroys vandals ability to complain about the block.
    • This will also look beter on an RfA, which is a long process.
    • There will be trolls that want to get on your nerves just so you make a 'mistake' that will look bad on an RfA. So far I do not see any but people will want to annoy you on the sole fact that you are annoying them by reverting their vandalism.
  2. IRC backup. We have several people with bots backup code. It is a first come first serve thing. Generaly however the person with fastest bw gets piority as a gentlemens agreement. Reason is simply that the person running the bot sacrifices significant bandwith, for example I cannot revert pages fast enough due to my bot. Other RC patrolers using my bot beat me in it :P
    • Also catch me on IRC this weekend for an update on the code. I improved the detection algorithm quite a bit ;)
  3. Template deletions. I completely understand how you feel. I had made several bold atempts with the intention of improving wikipedia. I like your creations especcialy the wantadmin template. Sometimes people do not agree with you. It sucks but dont let this get personal to you. This doesnt mean they hate you.
    • I created the Template:CVIP which got deleted. There are many examples of my attempts to create something new that in my view would make wikipedia a better place. But only a few got acceptance. I still learn from my 'mistakes' as learning from mistakes is a life long experience.
  • I cannot talk for everyone, but I think you are a good editor.
  • Dont take recent events as a discouragement.
  • Learn from why something you are doing is bothering another and create something better that makes everyone happy.

Thats all i got for now. If you have any questions feel free to contact me. If you are offended from any of this my appologies in advance, know that it wasnt inteded to offend you and you may want to hear a clarrification. --Cool Cat Talk 19:36, 18 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't bite the newbies

[edit]

Adam, please don't use the {{subst:test4}} template on a talk page as a first warning, especially when the vandal edit was the first edit ever made from the IP address. Use the test templates in order. Please read WP:BITE. Thank you! --Ashenai (talk) 21:16, 18 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

CVU Template

[edit]

In regards to your message about User:Cool_Cat/CVU2-1 at User_talk:Cool_Cat#CVU, can you clarify what you mean by can't read the text? I've checked it with several browsers (Firefox/IE/Opera) and the text shows up correctly. I also checked your user page and the template appears correct there as well. What browser are you using? --Thatdog 18:28, 20 October 2005 (UTC) (No I'm not Cool Cat, but I designed the current templates...)[reply]

D'oh. I just figured out that you were referring to the text on the image, not the "this user is..." text. Thatdog 19:59, 20 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Page protection

[edit]

From User_talk:Jimbo Wales:

There should be a page protection type that a group of users that remove vandalism a lot and admins can put on a page that lets users that are logged in only edit a page. This will help bring the ammount of vandalism down. (Signature removed because of the amount of markup it requires)

Adam, we rarely, if ever, protect pages except in extreme cases. Most administrators will not protect a page on request without looking very closely at the edit history, and without examining whether or not other forms of dispute resolution have been ineffective. In addition, changing whether or not anonymous users can edit is in fact a configuration issue which can only be altered by our developer team; not the admins. Who are admins to decide who can edit and who can't? We're not going to sacrifice our principles of open editing by anyone, especially not when vandalism can be dealt with rather swiftly.
I just thought I might explain these things here, as I know some people are rather disapproving of you already having spammed Jimbo for what they refer to as "trivial" reasons, e.g demanding adminship. Rob Church Talk | FAHD 23:32, 22 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not interfere with RfAr

[edit]

I'm talking about this edit. Adam, I know you mean well in everything you do, but you have got to avoid interfering with Cool Cat's arbitration judgement, which was not 100% in his favour. You cannot go around telling ArbCom what they can and can't do, or you'll very quickly find yourself blocked. Please read Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee and understand that ArbCom have the power to impose the sort of sanctions they did, and they used it. Please, please, please avoid getting involved; you have no idea of the amount of work done by our arbitrators in reaching this settlement (which was, in fact, very lenient to all parties) and if you inject yourself into these things, according to the ArbCom policies, they can and will treat you as an affiliated party - and that may well mean a block. Sorry, but I had already gone to bed. Generally, I'm on IRC if I'm actively on Wikipedia (I'm not today because I'm just here for a bit, doing some "paperwork" if you will and checking on things, can't stay on long), so if I'm ever on IRC you're always welcome to ping me if you need an admin. You're still welcome to message me if I'm not, but you'll have the best luck if I am on IRC. Sorry if you were having trouble tracking someone down! Keep up the good work with the vandal-squicking! er... k i was bored, but i guess ill stop

I don't feel that the page Warn should not be redirected to your user page User:Adam1213/warn. Basically because I think that new users who come to WP would see your userpage as a means to blatantly spam other users talk pages. I have changed the redirect to go to Warning for now. Thanks -- Malo 06:10, 25 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

In response to your comments on my talk page; Perhaps I was too quick to judge on the use of the word "Spam". Ok, thats fine, and I don't have a problem with you using any of your own user pages, for whatever reasons. However I just don't think it is appropiate for you to use a article page, such as Warn, to redirect to any of your userpages as it can and will most likely be confusing and misleading to other users. -- Malo 06:28, 25 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I've tagged this for speedy deletion, as it's in article space and quite clearly not an article. As an aside I can't see it's purpose, since without visting the user page you can't possibly tell which warning you need to issue. You can't tell if they've edited their talk page to remove earlier warnings etc. etc. --pgk(talk) 16:31, 25 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I've moved the utility to User:Adam1213/Vwarn. Since it's not actually an article, it can't remain in the main namespace. Carbonite | Talk 16:49, 25 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

mwpush.pl

[edit]

The script doesn't add content to an existing page. It will erase whatever is there before with whatever you give to it as input. Unless you use the -e option, that is.

I suppose it would not be terribly hard to do this; the script could capture and store the content of the editing textarea during its first visit to the target page when it gets the wpEditToken. Then, the script would need to be further customized to do whatever altering you want it to do to the text. Actually, if all you wanted to do was do something like add a standard template to the top or add something like a category to the bottom of a page, it wouldn't be too hard to improve the script to include "prepend" and "append" options. The script would have to save the original content, then output the prepend text, the original article text, and the append text. There's a variety of ways that could be done...

"The link on operating it goes to nowhere." What link are you talking about? As for your other questions, they are already answered on the KeithTyler/mwpush.pl page. Bots, automated vandalism warnings and a hell of a lot else

[edit]

I'm aware that you're trying to get hold of scripts to edit Wikipedia automated or semi-automated in order to add automatic vandalism warnings. I would advise that you do not try running any bot on Wikipedia without:

  1. Reading WP:BOTS
  2. Getting permission (on that page) to trial the bot

Wikipedia policy states that the bot account will be blocked if it is caught running without permission - mass, automated, rapid changes in page content are almost always danger signs.

Adam, it seems something about our work here isn't quite clicking, with you, and I'm concerned that people are seeing you as a nuisance and a pest. That's obviously not your intention - I know you only want to fight vandals, but perhaps someone needs to explain some things to you. I see you failing to understand that consensus drives what we do here, and that spamming User_talk:Jimbo Wales with requests for what the community considers petty matters is not a good idea.

If you would like, I can try to help you - I can point out useful pages that you must read, and I can give you some practical and straightforward advice on how to improve your reputation on the wiki and how to be taken seriously. I continue to assume good faith with you because I know what you do behind the scenes, but I'm worried that some of our less understanding administrators and other users may start losing patience.

I also know that I'm not the only user worried about this - Cool Cat, Drini and Essjay are also not too happy. If you would like me to give you some general advice and keep an eye on you, and let you know when you do something a bit silly, then of course, I can do that. What do you say? Rob Church Talk | FAHD 03:39, 26 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'd agree with Rob, I think many who have spoken to you know you are very keen to get on and help out, which is a good thing, but you'd probably be better using that enthusiasm initally to work with people and talk through ideas/problems with a few you trust. --pgk(talk) 06:55, 26 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Channel Access Removed

[edit]

Jtkiefer removed access for me. I was later give a 2. Can you please fix this up? -Adam1213☺ Talk+|WWW 00:44, 25 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Cool Cat. Just cleaned your talk up a touch at the bottom, but that ain't why I'm here. Like to point out that JTK removed Adam's access because of an inappropriate comment Adam made which, as I understand it, caused JTK to worry about Adam's understanding of IRC precedents and of Freenode's guidelines on keeping things cool.
Incidentally, I'm becoming worried that Adam still isn't getting it. I would love for someone to take him under their wing - hell, I'd do it myself. Can you maybe suggest to him that he needs to read up a few things and get some understanding of the wiki way into his head? If you want, refer him to me for informal mentoring or something; he's a clueless newbie who doesn't need to run into the wrong sort of trouble - we can sort it, no problems. Rob Church Talk | FAHD 01:32, 25 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
It was a joke... and I said that it was one. I never abused the access power that I got. The only time I kicked someone was when you came on with your bot and we were getting double posts and after asking people in the room and they approved I kicked. --Adam1213☺ Talk+|WWW 06:04, 25 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly as Robchurch said. If you would like more clarification on this you know where to find me on IRC :). Jtkiefer T | @ | C ----- 01:40, 25 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Here is what I think: I am not going to get involved directly. I am not going to overule any desicions made as it is not my place. However I will give adam a level 2 access as we know he is definately not a vandal. This will get him auto-voice as well. Objections? --Cool Cat Talk 16:06, 26 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
It's a bit irrelevant in some ways, since the use of voicing in the channel has been changed, so admins are normally voiced. (I guess regulars would get voiced if we went moderated). Autovoice has been switched off. --pgk(talk) 16:55, 26 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Cascade Range "vandalism"

[edit]

Dear Adam; I noticed your message to me, quoted here:

"This message is regarding the article Cascade Range. Please stop. If you continue to vandalize pages, you will be blocked from editing Wikipedia."

I am a contributing editor to the Canadian Mountain Encyclopedia and sought to contribute to the Cascade Range, not "vandalize" it. The geographical description of the Canadian side of the range, and the Canadian perspective on its history, were missing from the article so I added them. Is Wikipedia exclusively for US content only? I grant that my verbal style is overwrought at points but I'm just trying to be complete.

Blocking me from contributing to Wikipedia will be a great loss, given the amount of new items I've added for various regions, streams and other items concerning British Columbia and its people(s).

Sincerely

Mike Cleven http://www.cayoosh.net

PS I didn't realize I wasn't logged in (I'm registered, though).

Example of incorrect information in extant Cascades Range documentation

[edit]

The following is an example of the kind of error-ridden statements that were contained in the Cascade Range article; I have not yet fixed the following because apparently the Cascade Range entry is your personal turf - so it's your responsibility to make corrections. Quote:

Another major pass was cut by the Fraser River through mainly non-volcanic rocks in the British Columbian part of the range. This group of mountains are often called the "Coast Mountains" but are in fact structurally part of the Cascades. Mount Garibaldi and its associated group of volcanoes are in this part of the range.

Mount Garibaldi is a member of the Cascade group or family of volcanoes, but it is NOT part of the Cascade Range, nor are the Coast Mountains. Volcanic formations immediately north of Garibaldi, including the Black Tusk and Callaghan and Cayley and Meager, are NOT part of the Cascade family of volcanoes.

The only portion of the Cascade Range in Canada is to the south and east of the Fraser River, south of the Similkameen River and southwest of Merritt, and the notes I added to the Cascade Range article concerning its summits tonight are accurate and drawn from the [Canadian Mountain Encyclopedia]. See http://bivouac.com/ArxPg.asp?ArxId=1362 and http://bivouac.com/ArxPg.asp?ArxId=1694. The Coast Mountains are a distinct geographic grouping (official in Canadian geography; the term "Cascades" is used in older legal language for certain terminologies, but it has long since been abandoned by academic geographers and the general public. The term Coast Mountains stretches from the Fraser to the Takhini, i.e. Chilkoot Pass.

The Fraser River is not a "pass" but skirts the border of the range. Even if the Coast Mountains were part of the Cascade Range (which they aren't, no more than the Cascade Range are part of the Coast Mountains) the Fraser would not be a pass. A pass has a summit and divides two drainages. Go find yourself a dictionary of geographical terms somewhere before you write any new articles.

Sincerely

Mike Cleven http://www.cayoosh.net [email protected]

Firefox extension

[edit]

Would you happen to know how to make a firefox extension using Javascript? It would be very simple and used to fight vandalism. The basic idea is to feed RC diff's into firefox, and let it determine which pages contain text (such as an obscenity) listed in a file. For pages that don't contain anything on this list, the tab is closed. The others remain open and ready to be examined. If you can't figure out how to hookup the IRC RC output into firefox, then it could be used with WP:CDVF to open new tabs in firefox to be checked. I found a guide to making extensions, but it says you need to know Javascript. Thanks. — BRIAN0918 • 2005-10-30 03:51

How could Cool Cat's bot check the contents of a page to find common vandalisms, though? It only reads RC output. — BRIAN0918 • 2005-10-30 04:43

I'm pretty sure all it's doing is checking if the article is new, and if its filesize is huge. — BRIAN0918 • 2005-10-30 04:58

No problem. I do think you overreacted to my joke about being a bureacrat and having access to a "Cabal namespace". I thought it was clearly not true, so didn't anticipate that it would upset you as much as it did. Anyway, apologies for confusion, hope you continue to enjoy Wikipedia. Babajobu 10:19, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Well, first of all, I agree with your comment about Jews' aversion to killing. As you can see from AE's comments, many editors think I'm philosemitic. But I did suport the Religious persecution by Jews article because I think that all religious groupings have persecuted other groups, and that such persecutions are notable. As for your level ten rating in Wikipedia vandalism...well, if you change your vote on my RfA that's your business, not mine, but I've never even been in the Wikipedia vandalism IRC channel. How was I responsible for getting your level ten access taken away??? Babajobu 10:35, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, I'll do that for you...but I want to make clear that I am not doing this as a quid pro quo for a change to your vote to my RfA. I'm doing it because I feel bad that you were genuinely misled by my claims to Wikipedia superpowers. I have to run but I'll leave a not with JTKieffer a little later today. Babajobu 11:43, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Adam, I left a note on JTKiefer's talkpage, hope that clears it up, sorry for the problems I've caused you. Regards, Babajobu 22:40, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello adam. You may notice that Counter vandalism unit was sent to Request for Deletion. Hi, from what I understand things got out of control. This log does not look like the en-wikipedia-vandalism log as Karynn and AngryParsley do not show up there as far as I know.
I have in the passed also suffered from simmilar conversations. I had an Angryparsley declare me "a bad candidate for adminship" because of a conversation with him which he explained later that he was trolling. After the incident several IRC users have 'cooled' me down a bit so that I do not do something stupid like responding to him. The only way to keep a troll of is to ignore them.
Best practice would be to bail out of any such discussion ops dont like. IRC isn't generaly about who is right but more about an "op makes right". Please, please dont let people anger/intimidate you; just /ignore such people.
Tonikaku, I gave you a level 3 access as I do not see any valid/good reason for access removal. I do not want to fork the matter as that would be the best interest of the wikipedia project.
I understand several people are giving you a somewhat harder time, know that all they want to achieve is an Adam1213 whom would be an example to us all. Also realise some people appear to be less friendly towards newbies and generally expect them to be perfect so they point out even minor mistakes. This can be irritating at times but should not be interpreted as them hating you.

One) i didnt get your first almost warning, until after all my additions were done.

two) I thought any one could add to a wikipedia article.

three) these are facts about what the apostle paul, a jew, did believe about the criteria that made one a jew or not.

and there are jews who believe Jesus to be the messiah, jews who think him a great teacher and jews who think of as a heritic.

(four) how is adding to an article vandelism (J. D. Hunt 07:54, 1 November 2005 (UTC))

1) christianity does not trace jesus to moses. And nobody jew or christian, links anybody to moses father, I'm not sure i'm following you. Jews and christians trace jewishness, originally, through the father's line to abraham. They, both also, link the messiah to king david through the father's line. so, by birth and through christ they believe they and christianity are jewish. just cause most don't believe this don't make it not true. its messiannic POV vs Treditional jews POV. Crusade or ego?

[edit]

Adam, the addition of differing viewpoints do not constitute vandalism.

I am really concerned about your understanding of the Wikipedia principles, as well as your comprehension abilities. I haven't seen you contribute anything to Wikipedia except in the area of counter-vandalism, and now I really wonder about those efforts as well. It looks like even your counter-vandalism friends are concerned about your presumptuous and underinformed actions.

Are you looking to add value to Wikipedia or are you looking to be some sort of hero? Good writing and good knowledge will get you further than attacking people whose viewpoints you don't agree with. Wikipedia is not a place for vigilantism. If you would actually research into how Wikipedia works you would see that there are plenty of systems in place to deal with problems and that there is no need for you to put on a cape and rescue articles from easily-cleanable stains.

Hi, i almost never use wikipedia, and i have NEVER added a single letter to any of it. Im not even signed in. i dont even know if i HAVE a sign-in. but when i came to wikipedia today to look up a musician, there was a link that said i have "messages" and then theres all these accusations of vandalism and that im going to be blocked. which i find shocking because i did nothing of the sort, and im not even 'signed in'. im really upset because it says that i 'vandalised' natalee holloway which is dispicable and insulting because i did no such thing. maybe you can help me be sending an email to bogdanawdwNOSPAMatNOSPAMaolDOTcom just take out the capital letters. i dont need robots stealing my ID since imaginary robots are also apparently vandalising wikipedia under my name i didnt even know i owned. thanks.

Jtkiefer, says he is ready to forget about this given you agree to forget about it.

You may feel the need to seek "justice", however it probably is in the best interest of wikipedia to drop the issue. IIRC you do not seek some sort of punishment for Jtkiefer so I also feel you want to be left alone and be able to fight vandalism in the channel w/o interference.

re: nomination records

[edit]

I stopped putting in numbers a couple of months ago because it is a major chore to update them as this table gets bigger. The only wiki code markup code that generates numbers automatically are numbered lists and unamed links like [2], which would mean getting rid of the table and reformatting the data to a list. But if you are willing to do update it yourself on a regular basis... Zzyzx11 (Talk) 02:35, 5 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • Numbered lists (using #) will not work unless I remove the table formatting and I put it into a list. But I prefer the table because it seperates the data into columns that are easy to read. Zzyzx11 (Talk) 02:49, 5 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yup. I created my account using the name "FireFox" because that basically is who I am on the internet, always with two capital F's. At the time, I didn't know that User:Firefox existed, but that came to my attention when I tried experimenting to signatures and my links took me to the wrong place... I realised at the time that it may cause some confusion in the future, but he isn't a very active user at all so it shouldn't do any harm. FireFox 18:00, 5 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well I don't think of it as a major problem. Many people if they wanted to leave me a message would go via my signature (which has the correct link), and those who don't would soon realise that User:Firefox is not me. There is not much chance in getting a response from him any time soon anyway, he hasn't been active for nearly a month. FireFox 18:14, 5 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I did not spam Jimbo's talk page!!! If your definition of spam is ask a one line question you just spammed by talk page 3 times. (I dont think you looked your self at it) --Adam1213 Talk+ 16:07, 12 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Suggestion

[edit]

Regarding your suggestion to place those templates on my user page, thanks but no thanks. I would prefer to not clutter up my user page with template boxes like that, and it is already explained on the page about HTML and JavaScript. Also, you placing the actual templates on my talk page was putting my talk page into all their respective categories amongst other users with the templates on their user page. My page in the User_talk namespace in those categories were not what the templates were meant to be used for.

Additionally, I would also not like to use your AutoIt template which has neither been peer reviewed nor accepted by anyone. -- Daverocks 12:03, 21 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I could have, but I wanted to explain to people reading my talk page what your original message was. deletion

[edit]

I was trying to delete the 'contemporary thesis...' section. The reason is this: I created that section about two weeks ago, and since then it has been completely changed wherein it only lists two theories of time as being contemporary theories of time, which is of course completely inaccurate. Also, the page does not mention presentism, one of the most widely discussed theories, instead it only mentioned 'eternalism', equating it with the A-theory of time, which is extremely dubious.

bot

[edit]

I don't know about mirc programming but in most programming languages reading or writing to files takes a while and uses CPU. I think that the bot does this. if it had the files contence as variables instead of reading files all the time it could go much faster and use less cpu --Adam1213 Talk + 06:50, 16 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Somewhat true, reading from the hard-drive uses more CPU but not all that much. Just a few extra instruction exchange in different levels of memory (including system bus) and of course there is the delay due to hard drive read lag. However, in practice that isn't all that much infact all of it does not even take a second.
Keeping track of wikipedia requires quite a lot of RAM if you try to keep everything in memory. Just the list of IPs can suck up all the ram like there is no tomorow. The bot currently does not compare a given IP edit to all of the IP's stored. It follows a makeshift binary search tree model reading from a sorted system of folders and files (over several thousand files just for IPs. The bot does not even read admin lists, blacklisted pages if a minor edit is made by a user (NullC's bot covers sneaky vandalism so I dont worry about that as it requires direct access to wikipedia servers which I lack and NullC does not).
Also the now 700+ lines of admin lists would not fit in a single memory variable on mirc which at most holds 1000 characters. Anything above is delcared an overflow and is ignored. A lot of admin usernames have a decent lenght. So it would take a number of variables just to take care of that. Since the start of the bots lifespan we had about 200 new admins. The growing list will require more and more variables which is increasingly harder to implement and keep track of compared to overwriting a single file.
These are few of the many problems why I am hesitant to dump it all to memory.
The primary reason of bots speed is because of my very very slow internet connection. I am yet to convince Brion/Tim to allow me to host the bot on the wikipedia servers which would make the bot reliable however would also make it hard to update.

Re Admin

I did not spam Jimbo's talk page!!! If your definition of spam is ask a one line question you just spammed by talk page 3 times. (I dont think you looked your self at it) --Adam1213 Talk+ 16:07, 12 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Also, the page does not mention presentism, one of the most widely discussed theories, instead it only mentioned 'eternalism', equating it with the A-theory of time, which is extremely dubious.

Changes to your warn page

[edit]

Good afternoon Adam1213. I made a slight change to your User:Adam1212/warn page. You had an incomplete heading (missing the ending "==") for the note above the templates you are still working on. I missed the comment and tried to use the 3RR template. Went back and then noticed your comment. I tested to my User Page to see how Test1 worked. Nice!

Hope you don't mind that I made the change. And, thanks for developing the handy warning tool. ERcheck 21:28, 22 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Templates for spammer

[edit]

I took a stab at working the templates for the spam warnings. Unfortunately, I created "autowarns" in User:Adam123/autowarns. I was not allowed to move the page. I'd appreciate it if you would move the page to User:Adam1213/autowarns. That should complete the suite for spam warnings.

I'm new at this, so I'd appreciate any suggestions. If you would like me to stop working on the warnings, just let me know. No offense would be taken.

(BTW, how do you get the signature tildes to stay in the autowarn pages without it expanding to a signature?)

Please don't exploit MediaWiki bugs - User:Adam1213/autowarn

[edit]

Dear Adam: You have created a self-signing page at User:Adam1213/autowarn, which you achieved through the use of a known MediaWiki bug of being able to insert four tildes into your signature (see the bugzilla report for more information). I would be grateful if you would please remove the tilde group from the page. Best regards, --NicholasTurnbull | (talk) 01:07, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I read that thing and I feal that in this case it is not being used for fraud and can't be because of how it works, however maybe not everyone should be able to get to the instructions on doing it. If however it had been proven that this was causing a problem with the database or the software I would remove it immidently. --Adam1213 Talk + 08:00, 7 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

monobook.js

[edit]

Hello, I have a couple questions for you regarding my monobook.js file. As I can't write or read whatever language(java?) the monobook entries are in, I decided to just steal someone else's monobook(.js). What I want to do is add a few tabs to the page, one for sending my vandal warning message one for showing their edit count, and one to bring up the last diff. I am not how much of this is possible, so after experimenting a little, I asked Essjay(who has returned!) who directed me to the user scripts wikiproject. I chose you from the members list because I remembered a idea of yours on the Counter Vandalism Unit talk page make the test messages a one button operation. So if you could help me I would very much appreciate it, Thanks

fair use images on userspace

[edit]

As you are a member of the wikiproject userboxes, I guess you'll be aware of the controversy surrounding the userboxes. Well, while they won't be likely to be killed, it raised awareness about other issue: fair-use licensed images cannot be used in user pages, only on articles (since that's essential for the fair use claiming.

I'll try to explain. For claiming fair-use, the image should be related to the context on which it's used. so for instance, using the Microsoft logo on Microsoft's page would fall under fair-use, since Microsoft itself it's being discussed, while using it on a signature wouldn't, since the image it's not really being used for a reason.

You may notice for instance, that the userbox for "this user uses FireFox" doesn't have the firefox logo, since it's allowed: {{user fox}} displays

and it doens't use the firefox logo

Finally, I will point you to the page of the project you belong to: Wikipedia:WikiProject Userboxes from where I quote:

Notices
Urgent tasks!
These are the tasks which need to be completed quickly to prevent more useful userboxes being lost at TfD or otherwise:
  • Remove all fair use images from userboxes. Their usage violates fair-use guidelines. Only fair use images need to be removed – NOT others.
o '"Fair use images should only be used in the article namespace. They should never be used on templates (including stub templates and navigation boxes) or on user pages." Replace with text or another suitable image.

Since using fair-use images on userspace it's copyvio and thus it's not allowed on wikipedia, I had to remove the autoit icon you had on your userbox, please don't take this personal as it's something admins are doing will over wikipedia in the following days. You can contact Cool Cat or ask on #wikipedia to verify this happening.

Please drop me a note if you'd like further comments. -- ( drini's page ) 07:13, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The firefox userbox cannot use the logo at [5] because of the following.
1. The mozilla logo isn't released under GFDL, CC or other free licenses (for instance, you cannot modify the image, it's copyrighted to the mozilla foundation). Taken from mozilla's FAQ page :
Can I modify your logos and distribute the result?
No, sorry. The logo files themselves (e.g. the ones distributed with the apps) are copyrighted, and so making and distributing any derivative works would be a copyright infringement.
It follows that the logo it's not under a free license and thus we can only use it under fair-use as you can check on [6].
2. to claim fair-use, it would need to be used on an article discussion the image itself (that's what fair-use covers). Since userboxes are not discussing the image, fair-use doesn't apply to userboxes.
3. Fair-use applies only to article namespace, not userpages.

Moreover, notice the tag on the image page stating that the image isn't being used anywhere. Since we're not using, we cannot claim fair-use to host it (if we don't use it, we're not doing a fair use of it) without violating copyright , so it will have to be removed anyway in a few days. -- ( drini's page ) 22:33, 7 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Templates and new sections

[edit]

Hi Adam1213, I noticed that a recent vandalism warning you left on an anon's talk page broke the formatting (I fixed it when I blocked that anon) and since it used to happen to me a bit I thought I'd let you know how to avoid it. I assume you are using scripted test messages (you click a tab at the top and it adds {{test}} to the page). If you are editing the page with the "+" to create a new section, when it puts the edit summary of "{{test}}" in it ends up looking like =={{subst:test}}== and looks like this...

Sooooo, to avoid that either don't hit the "+" and use the clickable test messages, or just change the new section heading to not have the curly brackets. :) --Syrthiss 15:31, 20 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There's nothing in there that requires admin privileges - if there is, it's either commented out or won't be activated (it's all per-page). As I remember, the last spam that was handed out was on the 20th of December last year, so I think it's time for another update. First and foremost, the new Advisory Council and Administrator General have been elected. They consist of myself as Admin General and FireFox, Titoxd, Flcelloguy and Karmafist as the Advisory Council. We as a group met formally for the first time on the 31st of Decembe. The minutes of this meeting can be found at WP:ESP/ACM. The next one is planned for tonight (Sunday 29 January) at 20:30 UTC and the agenda can be found at WP:ESP/ACM2.

In other news, Karmafist has set up a discussion about a new personal attack policy, which it can be found here. Other new pages include an introductory page on what to do when you sign up, So you've joined Esperanza... and a welcome template: {{EA-welcome}} (courtesy of Bratsche). Some of our old hands may like to make sure they do everything on the list as well ;) Additionally, the userpage award program proposal has become official is operational: see Wikipedia:Esperanza/User Page Award to nominate a userpage or volunteer as a judge. Also see the proposed programs page for many new proposals and old ones that need more discussion ;)

Other than that, I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and wish you an Esperanzially good new WikiYear :D Thank you! --Celestianpower háblame 16:57, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".

The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #1

[edit]
Reach out is a program aimed at allowing users to bring issues that they have had in Wikipedia to a listening, sympathetic and caring audience:
"No one can know how we feel if we do not say. We cannot expect to get understanding if we do not ask for it. No one will dispute that sometimes life's issues are too much for one person. It is fair to say that sometimes Wikipedia's problems fall under the same heading. This is a place where you can bring the bruises that can sometimes be got on this project for attention."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Note from the editor
Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone!
  1. Future meetings are to be held monthly, not fortnightly as before.
  2. Bans and Access level changes (apart from autovoice) in the IRC channel are to be reported at the new log.
  3. In the IRC channel, there is going to be only one bot at a time.
  4. The charter requires members to have 150 edits and 2 weeks editing. Why this is the case will be clarified.
  5. A new Code of Conduct will be drafted by JoanneB and proposed to the Esperanza community.
  6. The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially.
  7. Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on.
  8. The Advisory Council is not going to be proposed to be expanded by the Advisory Council themselves, if others want to propose it, they will listen.

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #2

[edit]
The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
"Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Information
Welcome to the second issue of the new format Esperanza Newsletter - we hope you still like it! This week, it was delivered diligently by our new dogsbody. MiszaBot (run by Misza13): any execution complaints should go to him. Content comments should be directed at the Esperanza talkpage. Thanks!
  1. The next elections: Approval voting as before and, also as before, an previous leadership member can run. Please submit your name for voting in the relevant section of this page. Voting starts on 2006-04-23 and ends on 2006-04-30. There will be three places up for grabs as KnowledgeOfSelf is leaving Wikipedia. Please see the previously linked page for full details.
  2. The Code of Conduct is now ready for extensive discussion! Specific comments should go to the Code of Conduct talk page, discussion of having one at all should be directed to the main Esperanza talk page.
  3. The current process for accepting proposals for new programs has been deemed fine. All Advisory Council members and the Admin Gen are to endevour to be bold when viewing discussion. If they feel that consensus has been reached, they will act accordingly.
A plea from the editor...
The propsed programs page is terribly underused! Please leave any comments, good or bad, on the page, to help us determine the membership's thoughts on the ideas there.
