Esperanza Election

[edit]

Acetic Acid, thank you very much for your vote of confidence in my bid to become one of the first members of the Esperanza Advisory Committee. Even though the elections not finished, and the final results are still out, I would like you to know that I appreciate your support, and look forward to working together in making Wikipedia a better place to work and edit. Cheers, Bratschetalk | Esperanza 18:19, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

No worries.

[edit]

I don't mind. I would have closed it if I were in your position. My acceptance was mild based on the fact that I wanted to be an admin, but I also knew it'd fail, and was curious of how badly it would. Have a good day. - A Link to the Past (talk) 00:06, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Closing out RfAs

[edit]

Please do not close out RfAs that are going badly. The discussion at Wikipedia_talk:Requests_for_adminship/Archive_31#Avoiding_Pile-ons lacks concensus. Instead, you can suggest to the user that they close out their own RfA. In this case, User:A Link to the Past did not seem to mind but this may not always be the case. Thank you, --Durin 13:44, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ryan. Sorry about this. I seem to have an inability to do technological things right just now. If you can fix it, I'd be much obliged. If you can't, I'll have a go tomorrow. Cheers, [[Sam Korn]] 20:26, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Townies? I dunno. Kind of like the blue collar people who curse alot and don't use the letter "r" I guess when I think of them, but I don't know if that's the official term. I also call them "Massholes" at times, although usually in reference to the inferiority complex we Granite Staters sometimes have towards our neighbors to the south. Yeah, sounds about right. Although I enjoy a good chant of "Yankees Suck" when at Fenway. Apprentice - Difference in Percentages?

[edit]

Okay, could you explain to me where the number 163 comes from then? I understand that the departments take in different amounts of money, which is why straight out subtracting the numbers doesn't say much. But I have no idea where 163 comes from. Acetic'Acid 04:36, 29 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I believe the 108% is comparing the original sales figure to the difference between the two teams, which I don't think is really relevant. The 163% compares the actual difference between the two teams. When working with percentages, I find it easier to start off with the number 100, and in this case, first add 74% = 174, and second subtract 34% = 66. 174 - 66 = 108, and 108/66 = 1.63 = 163%. You can get the same results by using algebraic means. Since they are different departments, I'm not sure how valid this comparison is, but it is more correct that the 108% figure, but maybe the best option would be to remove the whole comparison itself.... You're a sysop!

[edit]
Hi, Acetic Acid/Archive 11, Congratulations on Becoming a Sysop

Hey there. I'm pleased to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator! You've volunteered to do housekeeping duties that normal users sadly cannot participate in. Sysops can't do a lot of stuff: They can't delete pages just like that (except patent nonsense like "aojt9085yu8;3ou"), and they can't protect pages in an edit war they are involved in. But they can delete random junk, ban anonymous vandals, delete pages listed on Votes for deletion (provided there's a consensus) for more than one week, protect pages when asked to, and keep the few protected pages that exist on Wikipedia up to date.

Almost anything you can do can be undone, but please take a look at The Administrators' how-to guide and the Administrators' reading list before you get started (although you should have read that during your candidacy ;). Take a look before experimenting with your powers. Also, please add Administrators' noticeboard to your watchlist, as there are always discussions/requests for admins there. If you have any questions drop me a message at My talk page. Have fun! =Nichalp «Talk»=

Please also add you name to WP:LA. =Nichalp «Talk»= 04:51, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism

[edit]

I just joined the CVU and was wondering, how do we deal with second- or third-count vandalism? (Possibly more). 72.244.64.173 vandalized my home page after (I think) I fixed another of his vandalisms. I noticed you mentioned previous vandalism on his user talk page. At what point to we do something about that? - ElAmericano 16:13, 9 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

First off, allow me to welcome you to CVU! As for multiple accounts of vandalism, here's what I do:
  • First offense - Post {{bv}} on their talk page
  • Second offense - {{test4}} on talk page
  • Third offense - Since I'm an administrator, I can block them for 24 hours (I sometimes make the block shorter if it is a AOL IP or other form of proxy as this block could affect innocent users).
Since you aren't an admin, you can ask for assistance at either WP:VIP (caution, response here may be slow) or WP:AIV (faster response). Acetic'Acid 05:36, 10 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

These are the arguments posted on the page of "Moldovan language".

For these facts many users have been blocked and more forced to accept an unilateral point of view of the Administrator Mikkalai and 16 years old Kid [[Node _ue]]. He does not bring arguments as we do, instead he uses his power to block many times (for one week or 24 h). Like for yourself, he warned you and mock on you saying that you don't have the right to say something.

I agree with you when you say to redirect to "Romanian language". Anyway "Romanian" was once recognized in the constitution as official language of the Moldova between 1991-1994 and many attempts to remake this were done.

"Moldovan language" is in fact indentical with Romanian language, renamed as a "language" for political reasons by the government. Although similar theories have been fielded for other languages, this proposal is now believed to have been made to serve political purposes only, and nobody has provided any evidence so-far towards the idea that Moldovan and Romanian are not from common linguistic stock.

The term "Moldovan" is also a soviet invention (see Dept. of State & CIA). A separate language based on these was declared and promoted for political reasons, in order to further advance a Moldovan identity separate from that of Romania.

The soviet Russians called people of Moldavia Republic: "Moldovan" because they wanted to create a new nation different from Moldavians/Romanians.

There is also in Romania a region called Moldova.

Russians manipulated people of Republic of Moldova and washed their brains to create a new person, the soviet "Moldovan". The real name in English is Moldavian, in Romanian is Moldovean and in Russian is Molidavanin. So "Moldovan" belongs to no language!

taken from Price, Glanville. Encyclopedia of the Languages of Europe. ISBN 0631220399; Blackwell Publishers, Oxford, UK; April 2000

Very interesting. For those who bother making a click on the link I will cite:

"The name 'Moldovan language' (in Russian, МОЛДaВCKИЙ ЯЗБIK 'moldavskii iazyk'); in Romanian, limbă moldovenească, or, in Cyrillic characters, ЛИMбЗ MOЛДОBeНЯCKЗ was applied in the Soviet Union, as during earlier periods of Russian occupation of the area in question, to the * Romance language used in the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic (corresponding more or less to the formerly Romanian territory of Bessarabia, annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940). In reality, 'Moldavian' is nothing else than the *Romanian language as spoken in Moldavia, i.e. both east of the river Prut in Bessarabia (now the Republic of Moldova) and west of the Prut in that part of the former province that remains as part of Romania. Claims made in the post-Second World War period by the Soviet linguists that 'Moldavian' should be recognized as a distinct Romance language were not taken into seriously by western scholars. Under Soviet domination, the *Cyrillic alphabet was in the use in the Moldavian SSR until the passing of a law on 31 August 1989 (i.e. before the break-up of the Soviet Union) proclaiming Moldavian as the official language of the Republic and the use of Latin script. Apart from a few lexical differences (mainly technical terms borrowed from Russian rather than, as in standard Romanian, from western languages), the written language was thenceforth indistinguishable from that in use in Romania and moves are afoot to harmonize the technical terminology of Moldova with that adopted in Romanian specialized dictionaries. After the Republic of Moldova declared its independence of the Soviet Union in 1991, its Constitution (1994) declared that the official language was limba moldoveneasca 'the Moldavian language'. At the time of writing, moves to have this amended to 'limba română' the Romanian language have not yet succeeded.

Heitmann, K., 1989, Moldauisch. In Holtus, G., Metzeltin, M. and Schmitt, C. (eds), Lexicon der Romanschinen Linguistik, Tübingen, vol 3. 508-21.

GLANVILLE PRICE"

Even at the internationally level (officially) is recognized that in Moldova the people speak romanian. Just for your record the US State Dept. (their foreign office), the french ministry of foreign affairs(France), the UK foreign office (UK), the german ministry of foreign affairs (Germany) are stating one think: in Moldova it is spoken romanian. romanian is the official language even if the name is moldovan. For the others motivated "moldovan language" followers please check the links:
  • German Foreign Ministry, Germany
  • US State Department, USA
  • France – Ministere des Affaires Etrangeres
  • UK – Foreign & Commonwealth Office

Others except the Russian are in the same manner. All the western powers refuse the russification attempts.

Artificial creation of the "Moldavian language". Evolution from Romanian to so called Moldavian

[edit]

Lately were discovered some facts that prove that the theory of the both languages romanian and "moldovan" - was prefab since the 1812-1918. Some important aspects of the problematics: functioning of the romanian language in the sphere of the laic education system from Bessarabia of the year 1812-1918, the attempts to codyfing the romanian language in conditions of a linguistic situations, causes that determined to degradation of the language compared with spoken romanian on the right side of the river Prut, taking out the name "romanian" and introducing the term "limba moldoveneasca", the intention of the tsarist government "to create a dialect neared to the slavic language".

In the first years of russian occupation (after 1812), because 95% of the population being romanians which they knew only their mother tongue, romanian was admitted as an official language in the institutions of Bessarabia, used along with russian. Gradually the russian language win importance. According to the dates offered by the Dept. for ruling the Bessarabia from 1828, the papers from bureau were held only in russian, and around 1835 it is established a term of 7 years time in which the state institutions will still accept acts in romanian language. As concerning the education, romanian was admitted as language of teaching only until 1842, after that being taught as a separate object. Thus, at the theological Seminar of Chişinău, romanian language is found on the list of compulsory subjects, with 10 hours weekly, until 1863, when the department of romanian is closed for good. At the highschool no. 1 from Chişinău the pupils had the right to choose between romanian and german or between romanian and greek until 9th of Feb. 1866, when the state counselor of the russian government interdicts teaching of the romanian language because the pupils "know this language in the practical mode, and its teaching follows other goals". Around 1871, the tsar published an ucaz "On the suspension of teaching the romanian language in the schools from Besserabia", because "In russian Empire are not taught local speeches".

Two examples of the identity were given: (one is from the constitution of both countries – see the identity)

Comparison Romanian/Moldavian

[edit]

The example below demonstrates that a formal text in Romanian and Moldovan may be completely identical, the only difference being the spelling of the î vowel in the word vântul. The colloquial languages show more difference, which varies over the area.

Moldavian Romanian English

Wikipediology

[edit]

I'd like to ask those fellows who have not indicated whether or not they grant permission for a wikibio on them to please do so soon. I'd also appreciate it everyone could expand or create the wikibios for which permission has been granted. The wikibio project simply won't be useful unless fellows actively participate; so I'd like to issue a challenge that each fellow contribute at least one sentence to two wikibios. I'll be on wikibreak for the next week and when I get back there will be prizes in store for the fellows who have the three highest edit counts on wikibios. Hello. Round four of Wikipedia Mind Benders will open on Thursday, December 1. This round will be drastically different from round three; part one will consist of a creative project, and part two will be developed from there. The full details will be released when the round opens. Time and speed should not be major factors in this round; thus, there is no exact opening time for the round as speed will not factor into the scoring. Thanks! Hello, Vinegar, I hope you're feeling better now. Rl's RFA

[edit]

I was quite shocked tonight when I stumbled onto the recent RFA for Rl and saw the oppose votes and their justifications. Quite frankly I can see no excuse for the harm caused to our community by the ridiculous imposition of a bureaucratic and arbitrary numerical standard which is neither supported by policy or by community behavior. I find it further unacceptable that some people choose to use a helpful user as a pawn in a wiki political battle and as a result alienated him from our project. I have never before been so ashamed to be a Wikipedia editor. It would appear that a factor in your oppose may have simply been a misunderstanding about what he was saying, although he quite clearly said that 100% is the only amount which is always clearly consensus some people read it as 100% is a minimum of consensus. He made this more clear later.... but you don't amend your comments. I hope you really do not believe there is an easy percentage that we can attach and that we should deny adminship because someone refuses to treat all issues as black and white. --Gmaxwell 05:50, 3 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

haha. It makes a change for me being labelled a "probable vandal", considering I normally fight vandalism myself. (Being in the Counter-Vandalism Unit). I just decided to see things from another perspective for a change, with a bit of abnormal vandalism activities thrown in to see responses. It was actually quite interesting. An Esperanzial note

[edit]

As I remember, the last spam that was handed out was on the 20th of December last year, so I think it's time for another update. First and foremost, the new Advisory Council and Administrator General have been elected. They consist of myself as Admin General and FireFox, Titoxd, Flcelloguy and Karmafist as the Advisory Council. We as a group met formally for the first time on the 31st of Decembe. The minutes of this meeting can be found at WP:ESP/ACM. The next one is planned for tonight (Sunday 29 January) at 20:30 UTC and the agenda can be found at WP:ESP/ACM2.

In other news, Karmafist has set up a discussion about a new personal attack policy, which it can be found here. Other new pages include an introductory page on what to do when you sign up, So you've joined Esperanza... and a welcome template: {{EA-welcome}} (courtesy of Bratsche). Some of our old hands may like to make sure they do everything on the list as well ;) Additionally, the userpage award program proposal has become official is operational: see Wikipedia:Esperanza/User Page Award to nominate a userpage or volunteer as a judge. Also see the proposed programs page for many new proposals and old ones that need more discussion ;)

Other than that, I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and wish you an Esperanzially good new WikiYear :D Thank you! --Celestianpower háblame 16:57, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Another Esperanzial note...

[edit]

Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".

The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.

Admin caction buttons

[edit]

Hey Acetic Acid. I'm developing my user caction tool, and Voice of All's helped me out hugely but I need to know the source code for the cactions section that admins get. Could you please e-mail me with the source code of the cactions section from any Wikipedia user page?

Mine goes something like this:

<div id="p-cactions" class="portlet">
	<h5>Views</h5>
	<ul>
		<li id="ca-nstab-user"><a href="./wiki.php?slug=User:Acetic_Acid">User page</a></li>
		<li id="ca-talk" class="selected"><a href="./wiki.php?slug=User_talk:Acetic_Acid">Discussion</a></li>
		<li id="ca-edit" class=" istalk"><a>Edit this page</a></li>
		<li id="ca-addsection" class="selected"><a>+</a></li>
		<li id="ca-history"><a>History</a></li>
		<li id="ca-move"><a href="./wiki.php?slug=Special:Movepage/User_talk:Acetic_Acid">Move</a></li>
		<li id="ca-watch"><a>Watch</a></li>
	</ul>
</div>

All I need is that section; it's easy to find by opening up the source code for a user or user talk page and finding the string "p-cactions".

Many thanks. haz (user talk)e 21:14, 16 March 2006

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #1

[edit]
Reach out is a program aimed at allowing users to bring issues that they have had in Wikipedia to a listening, sympathetic and caring audience:
"No one can know how we feel if we do not say. We cannot expect to get understanding if we do not ask for it. No one will dispute that sometimes life's issues are too much for one person. It is fair to say that sometimes Wikipedia's problems fall under the same heading. This is a place where you can bring the bruises that can sometimes be got on this project for attention."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Note from the editor
Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone!
  1. Future meetings are to be held monthly, not fortnightly as before.
  2. Bans and Access level changes (apart from autovoice) in the IRC channel are to be reported at the new log.
  3. In the IRC channel, there is going to be only one bot at a time.
  4. The charter requires members to have 150 edits and 2 weeks editing. Why this is the case will be clarified.
  5. A new Code of Conduct will be drafted by JoanneB and proposed to the Esperanza community.
  6. The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially.
  7. Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on.
  8. The Advisory Council is not going to be proposed to be expanded by the Advisory Council themselves, if others want to propose it, they will listen.

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #2

[edit]
The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
"Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Information
Welcome to the second issue of the new format Esperanza Newsletter - we hope you still like it! This week, it was delivered diligently by our new dogsbody. MiszaBot (run by Misza13): any execution complaints should go to him. Content comments should be directed at the Esperanza talkpage. Thanks!
  1. The next elections: Approval voting as before and, also as before, an previous leadership member can run. Please submit your name for voting in the relevant section of this page. Voting starts on 2006-04-23 and ends on 2006-04-30. There will be three places up for grabs as KnowledgeOfSelf is leaving Wikipedia. Please see the previously linked page for full details.
  2. The Code of Conduct is now ready for extensive discussion! Specific comments should go to the Code of Conduct talk page, discussion of having one at all should be directed to the main Esperanza talk page.
  3. The current process for accepting proposals for new programs has been deemed fine. All Advisory Council members and the Admin Gen are to endevour to be bold when viewing discussion. If they feel that consensus has been reached, they will act accordingly.
A plea from the editor...
The propsed programs page is terribly underused! Please leave any comments, good or bad, on the page, to help us determine the membership's thoughts on the ideas there.

You never answered me though - how are you? --Celestianpower háblame 23:49, 14 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, it's the Easter Holidays for us too, not that I've done any of the work I was meant to. Hmmm. Anyway, those AP tests sound similar but you do them in far fewer subjects. I will get the following GCSEs (or already have them): English Language, English Literature, Spanish, Music, Science 1, Science 2, Art, RE/Citizenship, Statistics, Maths and Food Technology. I've already got an A* maths (nearly 100% in one exam :P) and A in Statistics. Apart from Art, I'm predicted A/A* in all of these (I HATE art, but I still hope to get a B *blushes*). Good luck to you too - we don't study English Composition or US History (we do WW2 if we choose to do History at all :P), what do they entail? --Celestianpower háblame 00:13, 15 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3

[edit]
The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome!
Note from the editor
As always, MiszaBot handled this delivery. Thank you! Also, congratulations go to Pschemp, Titoxd and Freakofnurture for being elected in the last elections! An Esperanzial May to all of the readership!
  1. Posting logs of the Esperanza IRC channel are explicitly banned anywhere. Violation of this rule results in deletion and a ban from the channel.
  2. A disclaimer is going to be added to the Esperanza main page. We are humans and, as such, are imperfect.
  3. Various revisions have been made to the Code of Conduct. Please see them, as the proposal is ready to be ratified by the community and enacted. All members will members to have to re-confirm their membership after accepting the Code of Conduct.
  4. Referendums are to be held on whether terms of AC members should be lengthened and whether we should abolish votes full stop.

I note that you have not been able to have much activity on you Talk pages, understood. But do to the fact you have been recently denying a important character attribute of Makoto Kino, I feel you may look into this to see if there is a reason I tried posting similar changes twice. 1. Naoko's first successful Manga series was about Figure Skating. 2. This was brought into the Sailor Moon series in episode #35, Yoma to Pair? Hyoujou no jouou Mako-chan. Clearly indicating this to be a part of Makoto Kino's character as her being a good cook. Although it is not as often brought into the story line, it still identifies a side of Makoto Kino making it a acceptable attribute that is worthy of being identified in a "bio." 3. the creator of Sailor Moon has expressed a interest in Figure Skating, I think that it would do her justice to have this characteristic stated in the bio. It should also be stated in Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Masks. 4. I reworded the comment the second time to indicate more that she was "just a figure skater" rather then saying anything about her being the best - even though it is stated in episode #35 as her being the best of the scouts. 5. The fact that this would not be noteworthy would only indicate there is some dislike for figure skating or this particular episode. This is one of Makoto-san's few "stand out" moments in the first series and I feel it is a shame to take that away from her character to interested parties.. 6. Also has the potential of interest to Figure Skating Fans that this be brought to light.

Please clarify why you do not feel as though this is a notable attribute of Sailor Jupiter, it would be highly appreciated as well as respected. Thank you, Seanibu

Sailor Jupiter changes, would not have been made if they were not verifiable.

A short Esperanzial update

[edit]

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

Thanks and kind, Esperanzial regards, —Celestianpower háblame 16:00, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

August Esperanza Newsletter

[edit]
Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.

Including promotion pricing question

[edit]

Ryan,

You sent me a welcome message a while back. I made an edit recently and received a question about it on my talk page. The edit had to do with including pricing information in an article (details on my talk page including a link to the diff if you click on Genesis). I was wondering if you could take a look and see if I'm off base. I initially thought the edit was pretty straightforward, but looking through the policies and guidelines I didn't see anything that addressed the issue directly. All the best. Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!
Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage! Share your good ideas on how to make it awesome there!
The Esperanza front page has been redesigned! Many thanks to all who worked hard on it.

"Prochrist" tag

[edit]

Hi Ryan!

Nice to meet you online! Two quick comments. First, it's nice to see another liberal Christian doing e-activism around, and i'd love to talk with you more about the liberal Christian community on Wikipedia.

I'm new to being a backboard user here, but i run a group of grassroots leaders in the Progressive Christian Movement who are interested in using new media to better coordinate the work of several hundred local groups working towards a mission of long-term social and political change.

The Long Term Change group at Social Redemption has a weekly conference call where we invite experts in technology and institution-building to come talk to us -- sometimes on a very high level, sometimes on a pretty basic how-to level (as with Wikipedia, where we're just learning what social technology could mean for us as a movement).

I've looked at your profile and work here, and it seems to me that we probably have a great deal to learn from you, and I'd like to talk more. Perhaps we can connect by email?

http://socialredemption.net/

The second question relates to how we met. This morning I submitted my first entry for a long time (the first was the Progressive Christianity article, a loooong time ago) -- an entry for the "prochrist" tag. You've tagged my page "prochrist" for immediate deletion.

As a new user, I'm not sure how this works, and I'd like to ask your guidance. You write: "This has been done because it is an article about a certain web site, blog, forum, or other community of web users that does not assert the importance or significance of that web location."

The link I provided was our tag page at delicious. We've had a community of a dozen activists using the tag for about six months, and we have a much larger community of less social users using a tagcloud generated from the tag, housed at the SocialRedemption site. We talk about how the tagcloud works, and the signifiance of the "prochrist" tag here: http://www.socialredemption.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=243&Itemid=75 My question for you is how I assert to the wikipedia community that our community exists and indeed uses the tag as I claim they do. Any guidance would be wonderful.

Many thanks, and hope to talk more. Jo

Acetic Acid

[edit]

Hi Ryan,

I wonder if you can give me a little guidance. I've got a chess website of puzzles, featuring the crucial positions of Grandmaster games. It's not an income generator in any way and none of the puzzles are taken from copyrighted sources. They provide a highlight of the careers of strong chessplayers and hopefully provide a little entertainment for people who may want to solve the puzzles. It seems to be a good fit with Wikipedia. Here's an example: David Bronstein had the external link, * 45 Critical Positions From His Games I've found links to my website in 30 different-language Wikipedias and thought it was a pretty popular and effective idea. Lately, a member of the community, Ioannes Pragensis, has taken it on himself to eliminate my links and issue warnings about spamming. He has no administrative capacity that I know of. Is there a way to resolve this? Here again, the website wtharvey.com is harmless and provides a unique glimpse into the skill of a particular Grandmaster, something which sets Wikipedia apart from other encyclopedias.

Please advise, Ronald Ryan

[edit]

Hi. You were kind enough to welcome me when I started so I thought I'd get some advice.

I added to the Ronald Ryan article. As you know, Ryan was the last man hanged in Australia (in 1967). What I added was evidence of his guilt. They were confessions he is described as having made in public. One was recorded by his priest, Fr Brosnan (who, of course, was not his confessor). I gave my sources for the additions. The primary sources are trial transcripts and interviews with witnesses. They are listed in a secondary source. I gave both.

That whole section has been removed by a user who either has no account or did not log in (124.191.180.110) who simply removed it all on this basis:

“deleted "alleged" confessions made by one author of many books, which cannot be proven. Ryan and Ryan's defense attorneys absolutely dispute this "35-year-later" allegation of guilt”

See here

I could

  • Revert (and possibly start an edit war)
  • Discuss it on the talk page. However, I don't relish the thought of attempting to discuss something with a user who won't open an account and who has made half a dozen edits, all on the same general topic.
  • something else.

What do you advise? Avalon 01:13, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ive noticed that this user has vandalized Black & Silver (he reverted it, though.) It angered me since Dale sr. is to be respected, and ask that you could please keep a VERY close eye on him and if he vandalizes another page PLEASE BLOCK HIM. Thanks!!!! HIYO 03:08, 28 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Stephen

You correctly put my article up for deletion as it infringed copyright of another website. I have now corrected this. IS this now ok? Please let me know as, this is my first attempt at uploading an article and I have no idea, how many things im violating!

Thanks

Interview

[edit]

I am trying to find a wikipedia administrator who would readily do an interview for a research project I am conducting from the perspective of a wikipedia insider. If you'd like to do this, please email me at goat77 (AT) gmail.com —Preceding unsigned comment added by Goat77 (talkcontribs) 18:07, 12 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello ! rec'd your e-mail ..

This article needs to have the non-English slabs translated or removed

these are translations .. not new material .. Ok I can remove the Czech translations .. ? all ( 95%) the history is in Czech so how can one verify if they can not see the translation ? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Vlasime (talkcontribs) 12:40, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
