re: Johnny Johnson and the Bandwagon[edit]

Hi 21stCenturyGreenstuff, thanks for your response. Although it's unfortunate about your edits to Johnny Johnson and the Bandwagon, just thought this policy would be worth looking over, at the very least from the point of view of a new Wikipedia editor: Wikipedia:Verifiability. I saw that you're working on an autobiography.... just know that once it is published, your memoirs can be cited in an article as a reliable source.  :-) I for one would definitely know what it was like to work with Kate Bush! Cheers.... - eo (talk) 01:00, 24 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think you've done a really good job on those pages - you've improved them tremendously. Thanks! I made a couple of minor edits - Wikipedia style doesn't italicise headings; just use the ==heading==, ===subheading===... markup. I also removed the mention of the post office and the Sully Inn - although the Sully Inn is certainly a historic building about which much could be written, if we could just find it, and the Post Office has been the village shop for several generations, it doesn't add much to the article just to say that the village has a pub and a shop. It would be more notable if Sully didn't have those!

Thanks again for all the work you've done on these, it's really nice to see my home village getting some Wikipedia lovin'. :) Vashti (talk) 18:36, 2 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

I saw your message at WP:ENGLAND about Bayston Hill and thought I'd give you a nudge about WP:UKCITIES which is a resource/guideline put together to provide UK "place" articles a consistent layout and content style. Hope it helps! Happy editting! --Jza84 |  Talk  01:10, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dreamland Margate[edit]

I have reverted your recent edit to Dreamland Margate. You changed the text before the citation to something which is not backed up by the cited source. In addition, your text which read

is unsourced, so cannot be included. If you need assistance in citing sources, have a look at WP:CITE. If you would like me to help, let me know which newspaper you read the story in and I'll try and work in a citation for you. -- JediLofty User ¦ Talk 12:35, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The amendments to the Dreamland page were drawn from here http://www.savedreamland.co.uk/ which is updating daily since the fire and contains links to dozens of other sites and newspaper reports. My amendments to the Dreamland article were a precis of all the extant and more up to date information than the older referenced quotation that you have reverted to.
"Police investigating the fire which badly damaged the Scenic Railway have now confirmed it was started deliberately. Samples collected by specialist police and fire officers at the Margate site on Tuesday have been sent off for analysis in the arson investigation."
"It was difficult to gauge just how much of the Scenic has gone with smoke billowing around the park, but I would guess we have lost at least 25% of the track, part of the Station and - this is the worst bit by far - the workshop."
"Approximately 25% of the structure (the main lift hill and much of the central part of the ride) has been lost, and so has the workshop, which housed all the original trains."
"The trains are more difficult, but there are other examples elsewhere in the world, and at Great Yarmouth, which could be used as a template for a rebuild." 21stCenturyGreenstuff (talk) 13:22, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've worked in three of the latest BBC news stories about the fire, and moved it to its own section. What do you think of this? -- JediLofty User ¦ Talk 13:23, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, better than what was there before. How about mentioning the extent of the damage though...25% of the track, the main lift hill, station and workshop...and the loss of the original 1920s rolling stock? To the casual reader it may sound currently like the whole ball of chalk has gone up in flames. 21stCenturyGreenstuff (talk) 13:31, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's a good point, well made. It's such a shame that the Dreamland site has been allowed to fall into such a state of disrepair. I have very fond memories of being taken there as a child, back before it became "Bembom Brothers". -- JediLofty User ¦ Talk 13:43, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dolly Parton[edit]

Hi, 21stCenturyGreenstuff. I reverted your deletion for the reason I stated: there was no justification given in the Edit Summary. I did not look in the article Talk because you gave no indication to look there. Please make good use of the Edit Summary; it's a courtesy to other editors, particularly to those who have many articles in their watchlist.

As to your (and the previous anonymous person's) claim that the cited source made no mention that Dolly the sheep was named after Dolly Parton and thus was a false attribution -- you seem to have missed the following statement in the given source. "Dolly the cloned sheep, named after singer Dolly Parton, was born 10 years ago." It's in the article's accompanying photo caption.

I am reinstating the statement, again. If you doubt the veracity of the current source, it would be better to instead tag the statement "in need of a better citation". But don't delete the statement saying that it was not properly referenced. Thanks. --Mercury McKinnon (talk) 03:53, 16 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

LOL You were too late, it was already back and this time I had added a better and more suitable reference than the one you placed there, the BBC quote (currently Ref 25) actually states that DP was the influence for naming of the sheep 21stCenturyGreenstuff (talk) 10:08, 16 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

AfD nomination of King Edward VI School, Spilsby[edit]

Please don't take offense, but I have nominated King Edward VI School, Spilsby, an article you created, for deletion. I do not feel that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/King Edward VI School, Spilsby. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Userspace[edit]

Hi. You mentioned you weren't sure how to create an article in your userspace. It's pretty simple to do it just by typing the url that you want, such as http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:21stCenturyGreenstuff/New article right in the address bar. See also How do I create a user subpage? Additionally, you can use templates such as {{underconstruction}} to let people know something is being actively worked on. Orphaned non-free media (Image:Stanwell Badge.jpg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Stanwell Badge.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 12:16, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

May 2008[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, we would like to remind you not to attack other editors, as you did on Dolly Parton. Please comment on the contributions and not the contributors. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. Rtphokie (talk) 15:33, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

For heaven's sake don't be so prissy and oversensitive. That was no attack. If you want to see attack just wait till I am annoyed and turn the words on. That 'editor' had made a number of stupid and juvenile changes to the article, which I reverted...but commenting that they could not count is NOT an attack, in any shape or form. Go away and prissy at someone else 21stCenturyGreenstuff (talk) 15:54, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Woodhouse Grove School[edit]

Basically, you just need to go through the article and eliminate all the superlatives, along with anything that might be described as opinion as opposed to verifiable fact. For example, its an opinion that the school is "caring", or that it offer a "high standard" of something (unless of course you have independent reliable sources which make such statements, in which case you can quote those sources but not simply reproduce those statements as if they were fact). Perhaps it might help if you had a look at WP:NPOV and any related pages. Hope that helps. Regards, Gatoclass (talk) 12:20, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for uploading images/media to Wikipedia! There is, however, another Wikimedia Foundation project called Wikimedia Commons, a central media repository for all free media. In the future, please consider creating an account and uploading your media there instead. That way, all of the other language Wikipedias can use them too, as well as our many sister projects. This will also allow our visitors to search for, view and use our media in one central location. If you wish to move previous uploads to Commons, see Wikipedia:Moving images to the Commons (you may view images you have previously uploaded by going to your user contributions on the left and choosing the 'image' namespace from the drop down box). Please note that non-free content, such as images claimed as fair use, cannot be uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons. Comma and[edit]

I'm afraid I disagree about the comma + and. If you write, "I like chocolate and beer", it means both mixed together. One should write, "I like chocolate, and beer". It's the same as a tall, cool, and tasty drink.--andreasegde (talk) 14:26, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ah but I speak and advocate British English, especially where associated with a British biography. The Serial comma of which you refer is a comparatively new invention more associated with the 'bastardised' American English, sadly becoming more prevalent in recent years. Just put me down as a diehard traditionalist in this regard. As to the example you quote I would have said "I like both chocolate and beer". Any sentence can be rearranged to avoid a double comma. I just prefer my English as she should be spoked. Mmmmm, chocolate and beer? I must try that sometime, sounds yummy (although my diabetes nurse might have something to say afterwards) 21stCenturyGreenstuff (talk) 14:43, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I was also born in England. Americans would never add a comma if they could help it, because they are too intent on simplifying English to the point of least resistance.--andreasegde (talk) 16:37, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Radyr Comp photos[edit]

I've added some photos of the Comp to Commons in the category Radyr Cardiff (it's not an easy place to photograph as it's in a dip) Also refered someone who has just moved to a house overlooking Penarth pier to your Penarth article and they said it was really interesting. Cheers Tony (talk) 17:33, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks pal, I have upped three piccies to the Comp's article...looks much better now. I am in Penarth for a few days and have added some pics myself to the Barry Island Pleasure Park and Glamorganshire Golf Club articles. My camera is not up to the standard of yours though and I am not so lucky with the weather and the skyscapes as you seem to be. 21stCenturyGreenstuff (talk) 17:28, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The infobox on Barry Island isn't working properly so set pic to 250px as a work around. Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice[edit]

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.

We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

Date formats[edit]

Thanks for the heads up on my talk page. I must say I am quite surprised. There has been much discussion over the past few months about date formats. I (and several others) were involved in much of it until we got tired of teh same discussion going nowhere. At that time, the Wikimmunity was certainly far from consensus about date formats, although there were several strong-willed editors who disliked the preponderance of blue dates.

Most of the time, I wikilink dates while I am editing to provide date consistency within an article. I find several instances of mmm dd, yyyy intermixed with dd mmm yyyy in the same article.

re: "Dates are not linked unless there is a particular reason to do so. ", do you think it would be considered a "particular reason" to ensure that the Date format specified on thousands of users' My preferences works as desired? Do you know if there is an alternative to wikilinking dates that causes a user's desired date format to appear. Mine, for example, is yyyy-mmm-dd (preferred because it sorts better than mmm-dd-yyyy; even better would be yyyymmmdd, which is heavily used in oriental countries). Thanks. Truthanado (talk) 01:43, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Guglielmo Marconi[edit]

If you examine this change that I made, you'll see that I changed all dates that were not in dd Month yyyy to that format. I only later changed the one date back to Month dd, yyyy' because it is in a quotation, and that's the format used in the source of the quotation. --Elliskev 20:34, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry then, I didn't spot that. However, even though it is a direct quotation, I don't see why those dates should not also match the rest of the dates in the article. Such a change would not alter the sense or meaning of the quotation and it would not confuse any of the datebots that are cruising through wiki at present. 21stCenturyGreenstuff (talk) 21:47, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I was following the guideline at MOS:NUM#Format_consistency which says that the requirement to maintain a consistent date format does not apply to dates in quotations. --Elliskev 12:51, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Press Release Details

Summary Students at a Birmingham school are using the internet to bring old friends together for their 50th anniversary celebrations. PR Portfolio Education

Reference Number 7863 Press contact David Ballard - 0121 303 3621 Issue Date 8 August 2005

Present and past pupils at Bournville School and Sixth Form Centre, Griffins Brook Lane, Birmingham, are busy surfing the net sending out invitations for a grand reunion. The technical school for girls, the city’s first technical school, was opened by Mrs L Cadbury on 10 October 1955. It later combined with the grammar school for boys.

“We already have people coming home from Australia and the USA,” says Christine James, deputy head teacher. “They are really keen to take part in this important event and meet up with old friends. Everyone who comes will be able to look around and see all the changes that have taken place. We’ll have a dinner, bar, disco and entertainment from the staff and school big band.”

As well as asking former pupils to attend, the school would also like to borrow old photographs and other memorabilia for a temporary display. The celebrations at Bournville School take place on Friday 14 October 2005. Tickets at £15 each are available from the school. Contact Sarah Pinfield on 0121 475 3881 or email [email protected]."

I think the grand reunion was cancelled by the way! So were the Girls 'technical' too? Martin P.

Pity it was cancelled, I would have poodled down to Brum for that. I am mightily puzzled about the info though. I lived close to the school and the Girls school definitely opened two years before the Boys was built and opened....and the boys school opened in 1955....But I wonder if all they did was change the name of the girls school?...But....But no, they didn't do any technical stuff at the girls school.....and the school sign on the Bristol Road South definitely read Bournville Girls Grammar School as late as 1963....so I think they have got their info wrong and reversed....it was the boys technical school that opened in 1955 and combined with the girls grammar 21stCenturyGreenstuff (talk) 19:24, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
