In June 1965, floods occurred along the South Platte and Arkansas rivers in Colorado.[1][2][3]
Meteorological synopsis[edit]
On June 14, an unstable atmospheric environment occurred, which was coupled with several weather conditions, including the increase of surface pressure over portions of the central Great Plains, unseasonably cool air, and a low-pressure area located over Chihuahua, Mexico which pushed moist air from the Gulf of Mexico into parts of east Colorado and northeast New Mexico.[3][4] This caused heavy rainfall across portions of southeastern Colorado, some of which had already fallen the day before.[3][5] Convection also developed as a result of the warm, moist air,[5] resulting in hail damage across the Colorado Springs area and a tornado in Loveland, with the latter event injuring 19 people and causing $1 million in damage.[6][7][8]

Impact[edit]
The heavy rainfall on June 14 caused destructive floods along Plum Creek in Douglas County, Colorado, and also caused flooding along the Bijou, Lone Tree, and Pawnee creeks through June 16.[10]
