Oktagon MMA is a Czechoslovak organization organizing tournaments in mixed martial arts (MMA) in the territory of the Czech Republic, Slovakia and, from June 2022, also in Germany. Its founders and owners are Ondřej Novotný and Pavol Neruda. [1] The organization organized the first tournament on December 10, 2016 in Prague.[2] Currently, the organization has organized more than 40 tournaments in 6 years. Every year, the organization also prepares a sports reality show from the world of combat sports called Oktagon Challenge.

History

[edit]

The Oktagon MMA organization made itself known for the first time in 2016 when it started filming the Oktagon Challenge reality show, in which 8 fighters (4 from the Czech Republic and 4 from Slovakia) fought on the model of the American reality show The Ultimate Fighter for a contract with the organization and €10,000.[3] The reality show was broadcast on O2 TV Sport in the Czech Republic and on JOJ Plus in Slovakia. The winner of first Oktagon Challengge has been decided on December 10, 2016 at the first-ever Oktagon 1 tournament, which took place in Prague's Sportovní hala Královka, where the Slovak fighter Gábor Boráros won the final of the first series of the Oktagon Challenge, defeating Jakub Běle after less than 4 minutes of the 1st round via submission (RNC ).[4]

In 2017, the organization held 3 tournaments. At the Oktagon 2 tournament in April, which took place in Bratislava's HANT arena, Gábor Boráros defeated Roland Čambal via TKO after 3 minutes of the 1st round in the main match.[5] The July Octagon 3 took place at the central tennis court in Prague's Štvanice, and in the main event, Slovakian fighter Attila Végh defeated Irishman Paul Byrne by unanimous decision on points.[6] In November 2017, the organization hosted the Oktagon 4[7] tournament, once again held at the HANT Arena in Bratislava, which featured the finals of the second series of Oktagon Challenge. In it, Samuel Krištofič defeated Radovan Úškrt after 2 minutes of the 3rd round via submission (Arm–Triangle Choke).[8]

On March 17, 2018, the organization presented itself for the first time in Ostrava, specifically in the RT Torax arena, where Ľudovít Klein faced Matěj Kuzník in the main match. After 4 rounds, the fight was stopped on the doctor's orders and Ľudovít Klein became the winner via TKO.[9]

This was followed by the Oktagon 6 tournament, which took place on May 26, 2018 in the Steel arena in Košice. The main match featured Samuel Krištofič, who finished Ondřej Raška via TKO in the 1st round.[10] On July 28, 2018, the organization held a tournament for the second time at the central courtyard of Prague's Štvanice, namely the Oktagon 7 tournament. In the main match of this tournament, Michal Martínek faced Daniel Dittrich for the title of heavyweight champion in the organization's first ever title match. In the 3rd round here, Martínek defeated Dittrich via TKO and thus became the first ever champion of the Oktagon MMA organization.[11]

The Oktagon 8 tournament was part of the filming of the third series of Oktagon Challenge. Jakub Dohnal and Matúš Arpáš and Karol Ryšavý and Aziz Dauliatov competed in the semi-finals of the reality show at the Imperial Hotel in Karlovy Vary. Jakub Dohnal and Karol Ryšavý advanced to the finals of the show, whose mutual duel subsequently took place at the Oktagon 10 tournament. In mid-September 2018, the organization presented itself for the first time in the largest Slovak hall, the Ondrej Nepela Arena in Bratislava, with the Oktagon 9 tournament, in the main match Samuel Krištofič lost unanimously on points to Grzegorz Siwy from Poland.[12]

The last tournament of the year was the anniversary Oktagon 10, which took place on November 17, 2018 in Prague's O2 arena. In the final of the third series of Octagon Challenges, Karol Ryšavý won in the 2nd round via TKO. Attila Végh also appeared for the first time since the Oktagon 4 tournament, defeating Brazilian Maiquel Falcao by unanimous decision. In the main preliminary bout, David Kozma became the organization's first-ever welterweight champion after his opponent Gábor Boráros was injured in the 2nd round and could not continue the fight. The main match of the tournament was arranged by former Fight Nights Global champion Tomáš Deák and American Cory Galloway. In this match, Tomáš Deák won unanimously on points after three rounds.[13] On February 11, 2019, at the Oktagon PrimeTime preseason press conference, the organization unveiled the signing of Karlos Vémola and announced Vémola's match with former Bellator champion Attila Végh at the end of the year.

The first tournament of 2019 was Oktagon 11, which returned to Ostrava after almost a year, specifically to the Ostravar Arena, and which featured Karlos Vémola for the first time in the organization, who won over Paweł Brandys in the 1st round via submission (RNC). In the main event, champion David Kozma made his first title defense, defeating challenger Samuel Krištofič by unanimous decision after five rounds to defend his welterweight title.[14] A month later, the first tournament of the Oktagon Prime series took place in the Crow arena in Košice, in the main match of which Jozef Wittner won over Adam Horvath in the 2nd round via TKO.[15]

Oktagon Underground

[edit]

The covid-19 situation in 2020 affected everything and everyone. Combat sports included. The Oktagon MMA organization had to cancel the tournament originally scheduled for March for this reason. The founders of the organization therefore came up with the unique Oktagon Underground project during the Covid lockdown. The first Oktagon Underground was a series of 7 tournaments in which male and female wrestlers competed in several weight classes under modified rules. These were exclusively bouts in the stance, but in which the fight could be transferred to the ground with a takedown. There, after 3 seconds of active control, the takedown was recognized as successful and the fight returned to the stance. Submissions and were also allowed.[16][17]

Tipsport Game Changer

[edit]

The biggest project in the history of the MMA Octagon and the biggest project ever to take place on the European stage. In the pyramid, a total of sixteen elite wrestlers of the welterweight division (weight category up to 77.1 kilograms) will face each other not only from Europe. In total, the sixteen fighters will divide among themselves the rewards in the amount of one million euros, i.e. 25 million crowns. The absolute winner of the five-round elimination tournament will receive 300,000 euros (approximately 7.5 million crowns), the first losers will receive fifteen thousand euros (approximately 400,000 crowns). Tipsport Game Changer 2023 starts at the Oktagon 40 tournament, which takes place on April 3 in Ostrava's Ostravar Arena.
