Role in combating Nipah 2018 outbreak[edit]

Doctors at Baby memorial Hospital had a vital role in combating the Nipah Outbreak in 2018.

In May 2018 a patient was admitted to Baby Memorial hospital [1][2] with suspected viral encephalitis. A team of doctors at Baby Memorial Hospital, Kozhikode suspected Nipah, as the symptoms were similar to that of his brother who had succumbed at the Government Medical College, Kozhikode earlier due to unknown causes. The samples were tested at the Manipal Institute of Virology and was also tested at National Institute of Virology, Pune where it was confirmed as a case of Nipah.

The outbreak was controlled in Baby Memorial Hospital, which had stricter infection-control protocols which led to the halting of the transmission[3]. For its commendable role during the outbreak, which took 17 lives, doctors of Baby Memorial Hospital received an honorary award from the state government for their service.[4]
