Campus Fryslân (Campus Frisian) is a faculty of the University of Groningen located in the Dutch city of Leeuwarden. The faculty focuses on the multidisciplinary study of scientific issues related to social and economic themes that have been identified as relevant to the Frisian region.

History

[edit]

Campus Fryslân is located in the former Beurs and Waag, or stock exchange in English, building on the Wirdumerdijk. The library was located there since the 70’s and moved into the Blokhuispoort in 2019. In June 2016 the building was designated as the new headquarters for the Campus Fryslân faculty, and in November 2017 the RUG and the municipality signed the transfer of ownership of the building[1]. The design for the renovation plans is by J.O.N.G architects[2].

The front of the building bears the English-language name University of Groningen Campus Fryslân[3]. On September 13th, 2018, more than two hundred years after the closure of the University of Franeker, university education has returned to Friesland.[4].

Incidentally, an earlier initiative precedes this campus. In 1976, using the same location, a Sub-faculty of Social Sciences in Leeuwarden (SSWL) was also established by the University of Groningen (RUG) with five professors and a dozen lecturers as staff. This university program functioned until 1985 and graduated several dozen students with doctoral degrees. As part of the massive budget cuts in the 1980s, the RUG surrendered this program and the students were transferred to faculties in Groningen. After thirty years, this new university initiative is therefore the second since the discontinuation of Franeker University. The official opening of Campus Fryslân in the Beurs took place on October 31, 2019.[5]
