Lyndall Bass (born July 5, 1952 N.C.) is an American realist painter and teacher known for her still lives, flower paintings and symbolist figure paintings. She lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She is the designer of the 2010 Penny known as the Union Shield Penny.
Biography[edit]
Bass was born in Whiteville, North Carolina. Bass attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, studying under Arthur DeCosta and Will Barnet. She continued her undergraduate studies at Indiana University, completing her BA in Fine Art in 1984 with an MA in Instructional Systems Design in 1987. Her lineage through DeCosta reaches from his teacher Daniel Garber taught by Thomas Anshutz a student of Thomas Eakins. Will Barnet’s shared legacy through Philip L. Hale extended to Claude Monet. She discovered the techniques of Jacques Maroger with Siegfried Hahn, whose influence provided important practical connections with European artistic thinking and practice. His early training inSouth Africa descended from James Abbott McNeill Whistler.
Her work is based on reflections of classical tradition, focused on a response to collective thinking about the arts through history. Bass' primary mediums are oil paint and graphite on paper. Bass lives, teaches and exhibits her work in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She is married to the painter Geoffrey Laurence and has one son, the writer Olive Lykins.
Her work is held in private collections internationally.
Awards and Honors[edit]
Bass has received numerous awards including a National Society of Arts and Letters award, a Franklin Mint¬ Award of Excellence and First Purchase Award from the Evansville Museum. She is the recipient of a grant from the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. Her most recent award is for her design for the United States Mint for the 2010 Lincoln penny reverse design, known as the “Shield Cent”.
