The 2009 San Francisco 49ers season is the franchise's 63rd season in the NFL and the 1st Season under WillsCruelDawgs Madden Franchise of the San Francisco 49ers.

The San Francisco 49ers started their season off with a 20-17 Divisional Victory over the Arizona Cardinals. On the following Tuesday the 49ers cut Keith Smith and moved Tarell Brown up to the dime position for Cornerback. Also announced was the injury status of Dashon Goldson who will be active against the Seattle Seahawks.

In the second weekend of the NFL Regular Season the San Francisco 49ers came up just short losing to the Seattle Seahawks 33-28. Leading up to Week 4 the 49ers announced that they had released Shaun Hill. The Week leading up to the game against the Atlanta Falcons the 49ers signed Cornerback Pacman Jones to the roster.

He Agreed to a deal worth $1.20M esitmated. The 49ers will hope that he fixes some of the coverage problems which has led to giving up 259 passing yards allowed through the air on defense. The 49ers released Dre Bly to empty some cap room.

The 49ers entered the Bye Week at 3-2. After coming off an impressive win against the Houston Texans the 49ers dropped two straight as they continue to fight for a playoff spot.

When the 49ers hosted the Chicago Bears in Week 10 it was the first time since January 6, 2002 against the New Orleans Saints that the defense had recorded a shutout. That season the San Francisco 49ers shut out three opponents.

Since coming off the huge loss to the Indianapolis Colts and the shutout to the Bears the 49ers defense has transformed. In the first nine weeks of the NFL Season the Defensive Unit struggled and gave up 376 yards per game, against the Titans, Bears and Packers they have allowed just 10.6 points per game opposed to 21.5 and have allowed just 176 yards per game in the last two games.

With the two game winstreak the 49ers are settled at 6-4 and are at Seattle's door of whom have a 7-3 record. After a three game win streak and a 3 game losing streak by the Seahawks the 49ers and Seahawks will battle for the #1 likely seed in the division.

After spending the majority of the season as the second placed team in their division the 49ers overcame the division favourites and beat the Seahawks 15-14 to give them the 1st seed in the NFC West.

The Following Week the 49ers announced that they had released Outside Linebacker Marques Harris. The 49ers showed interested in Free Agent Running Back Chris Henry after Week 14 of the season.

The 49ers signed Chris Henry and Shane Andrus to the roster and released Running Back Michael Robinson.

During Week 14 of the season, the Philadelphia Eagles ended the five game win streak that the San Francisco 49ers had.

After ending the season at 10-6 the San Francisco 49ers enter the post season as the #4 NFC Seed.

The 49ers defense gave up 310.8 yards per game, 230.5 pass yards per game, 80.31 rush yards per game and gave up a stiff 17.7 points per game. However the defense led the league in redzone defense with allowing just 8 defensive touchdowns and led the league in interceptions (31). Which included Dashon Goldson leading the NFC in interceptions with 8. Patrick Willis was 4th in the league with tackles totalling 149. He won Defensive Player of the Year Award and also Best Linebacker.

Despite Frank Gore nearly carrying the ball 500 times and rushing for over 2000 yards he was not invited to the Pro Bowl.

It was announced that Shane Andrus will be the place kicker during the playoffs.

Regular season results[edit]

Week 1: vs. Arizona Cardinals[edit]

The San Francisco 49ers got off to a slow start after allowing an opening drive field goal. Shortly afterwards Alex Smith threw a interception that led to a 20 yard touchdown pass to Anthony Becht. The 49ers got back into the game with a field goal but again allowed the Cardinals to drive down the field.

This time Free Safety Dashon Goldson forced a fumble which was returned 33 yards by Walt Harris For a touchdown.

After the monstrous collision Goldson suffered a pinched nerve in the neck and sat out the rest of the game.

The 49ers took advantage of the turnover and put their first touchdown of the season on the board with a 1 yard run by Frank Gore.

The Cardinals after allowing 10 points in just a handful of minutes drove back down the field but this time Kurt Warner threw a costly interception to Walt Harris who was stopped after running it back 33 yards.


[Alex Smith] is still developing. I thought he had a good game and did well in the second half without even throwing for a touchdown. His 38 yard pass to Michael Crabtree shows that he can flourish in the system can decisively get the job done.

Just Before Halftime the 49ers put up another field goal to end the first half 17-10.

After a defensive slugest during the third quarter the fans were treated with an exciting finish to the first home game of the season.

After throwing a 92 yard touchdown to Anquan Boldin the Cardinals go the ball back with 40 seconds.

They ran out of time on the 49ers 32 yard line as the Clock ran out as they spiked the ball getting ready for a would be game tying field goal.

With that win the San Francisco 49ers improved to 1-0 and are placed first in their division.


Week 2: vs. Seattle Seahawks[edit]

In what could of been a win turned into another late exciting game but this time the 49ers cost themselves a victory with giving up huge pass plays at the end of the game.

During the first half teams switched scores as the Seahawks led into the second half with a 17-14 score. The Seahawks would extend this but the 49ers came back to put themselves ahead with just 3 minutes left but after miscommunications the 49ers allowed Nate Burleson to reel in a long pass and spring down the field to give the Seahawks a touchdown and later the win.

With the loss the San Francisco 49ers fall to 1-1.

Week 3: vs. Minnesota Vikings[edit]

The 49ers travelled to the Iron City to take on Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings.

Frank Gore became the first player since the 2007 NFL Season to rush for over 100 yards against the Vikings.

Early during the game the 49ers struggled on both sides of the ball as the Vikings went down the field at will but all afternoon the 49ers put up a strong defensive stand in it's own territory as the Vikings picked up Field Goals instead of sure touchdowns.

Frank Gore struggled on the run all game but reeled off a 41 yard run furthered by a 15 yard run then a 10 yard run turning the 74 yard drive into a touchdown pass.

It got worse for the Vikings as Brett Favre went down and on the next Play Dashon Goldson picked off Tavaris Jackson.

It didn't get better as he was sacked and left in a crumpled heap by Patrick Willis but a few plays later managed a drive late in the game ending in a Field Goal to put the Vikings to 3-0 for the first time since 2003.

With the loss the 49ers fall to 1-2

Week 4: vs. St Louis Rams[edit]

The 49ers flew back home looking to end their 2 game losing streak and reach .500.

The Rams gave the 49ers a tough tough test and it came down to the last play of the game.

The Rams came out early scoring a touchdown on their first drive and looked good throughout the game.

By Halftime the Rams were up 20-7 and it looked game over for the home side. But Mike Singletary and the 49ers begged to differ as they brought back a comeback.

Alex Smith threw for a season high 183 yards and was flawless in not throwing an interception.

The 49ers edged themselves barely into the lead 21-20 with just five minutes left.

What happened next will go down as one of the most exciting last minutes in a NFC West game you could want.

The Rams began working down the field and on the five yard line with just a few seconds left they were unable to get the Kicker onto the field and kick the attempted field goal and gave the 49ers that 1 point lead of a victory.

With the win the 49ers improved to 2-2.

Week 5: vs. Atlanta Falcons[edit]

The 49ers took on the Matt Ryanless Atlanta Falcons in a intraconference showdown the week before the bye game.

The game was haywire for the Atlanta Falcons as the 49ers forced five turnovers all through the air and caused the 3rd string Quarterback a rookie by the name of John Parker Wilson to try and get past the 49ers.

They failed and the 49ers enter the bye week for the first time since 2002 with a winning record.

For the second time this season the 49ers allowed another 100 yard rusher and for the fifth straight game allowed a passing touchdown.

Patrick Willis racked up 25 tackles in just two games and Alex Smith has yet for pass for at least 200 yards in a game.

San Francisco 49ers Tight End Vernon Davis is on par for 77 receptions, 761 recieving yards and 16 touchdowns.

San Francisco 49ers Running Back Frank Gore is on his way to make a Career High season with 445 carries, 1884 rushing yars and 10 touchdowns.

Week 7: vs. Houston Texans[edit]

Whoever agreed to get Pacman back into the NFL is a Genius. Pacman even put his own style of points up on the board as the 49ers creamed the Texans.

The 49ers rushed for over 300 total yards against the weak Houston runs defense. The 49ers for the first time since Week 13 of the 2008 NFL Season against the Buffalo Bills did not concede a touchdown.

Frank Gore wasn't even present for the first Quarter due to injury but still eclipsed the 200 mark. He's on his way to go for over 2000 rushing yards.

The 49ers got off to a fast start and didn't look back. The 49ers applied more pressure and Goldson, Lawson and the newly signed Pacman Jones had interceptions, two of them returned for touchdowns.

If this is the way Pacman Jones is redeeming himself. It's a pretty good way to go as he will be up against Payton Manning and the 6-0 Colts next week.

Week 8: vs. Indianapolis Colts[edit]

The 49ers travelled to the Indianapolis Colts hoping to cause a upset -- It was anything apart from an Upset as Peyton Manning shredded the 49ers pass defense.

Pacman Jones nor Patrick Willis could make a difference as the Colts proved to be the far superior team. Even though the 49ers came within distance during the fourth Quarter, the Colts still managed to put it away.

For the first time this season the 49ers defense allowed a 100 yard rusher and 300 yard passer in the game. It was dissapointing to say the least.

We tried everything, We tried man, tried two-man, zone, you name it, but you’ve got to give him credit, man. He’s one heck of a quarterback, and we definitely had some issues there that we need to get fixed going ahead.

The 49ers looked in the game at the start when Alex Smith connected to Isaac Bruce on a 30 yard pass but the 49ers never recovered until the dying minutes of the fourth quarter when they came back to life.

Frank Gore has continued to impress as he ran for over 100 yards for the seventh straight time this season and has carried the ball an amazingly high 236 times in just seven games.

With the loss the 49ers fell to 4-3 and continue to hold the #2 seed in their division.

Week 9: vs. Tennessee Titans[edit]

This was a matchup that both teams at 4-3 were looking to win. A 5-3 record is looking good towards the final stretch much rather than a 4-4 record.

It was the Titans day as they ran the ball heavily and made the big plays. Defenses win's championships and it took nearly 75 minutes of football to decide the winner.

The 49ers got off to a good start and it looked like it would be a blowout early but both defenses came together and the offenses struggled all day to put the points up on the board.

The 49ers secondary was sluggish as they lost starter Dashon Goldson, Pacman Jones and Patrick Willis all the game ending injuries. That is when Chris Johnson took over the show.

The 49ers kept giving the Titans the chance and they could of even sealed it with a last snap field goal but missed to send it to Overtime.

Rob Bironas didn't miss again as he hit the 33 yard field goal to send the 49ers to a record of 4-4.


Week 10: vs. Chicago Bears[edit]

The Bears travelled to San Francisco for a Intraconference showdown on the first Thursday Night Football Game of the Year on the NFL Network.

The 49ers shut out the Chicago Bears, the first time they had shut anyone since the 2001 season of which they went 12-4.

The game was a defensive struggle for the first three Quarters before the 49ers seperated from the Chicago Bears and made the game winning touchdown with just over 1 minute left.

It was the first time all season the 49ers had held an opponent to under 200 yards and just the second time all season that they held an opponent to under 300 yards.

It was the first time since the 2003 season that the San Francisco 49ers had beaten the Chicago Bears.

With the win the 49ers improved to 5-4.

Week 11: vs. Green Bay Packers[edit]

The San Francisco 49ers travelled to the Frozen Tundra to take on the Green Bay Packers. Both teams were placed second in their divisions and had aspirations for a playoff birth.

It came down to solid hard defense for the third week straight for the 49ers.

The Green Bay Packers struggled mightily when Aaron Rodgers left the game early and the Packers couldn't keep the chains moving. For the fourth consecutive game pacman Jones left with a shoulder injury.

The 49ers kept strong and came out ontop.

With the win the 49ers improved to 6-4.

Week 12: vs. Jacksonville Jaguars[edit]

The Jaguars travelled to San Francisco to take on the upcoming 49ers. Just like the teams before them a revolutinised 49ers defense stopped them all game.

Led by Patrick Willis upfront and Cornered by Pacman Jones, the Jaguars were stuck all day. It didn't help when David Garrard went down. But that is no excuse as Alex Smith suffered a concussion and didn't come back.

The 49ers are on a missing winning their third straight game, something they have not managed to do since the 2006 season.

In this matchup the 49ers delviered a knockout blow to the Jaguars playoff hopes as they plummeted to a 3-8 record after losing 39-15 to the 49ers.

With the win the 49ers improve to 7-4 and are on a three game win streak heading into Seattle to decide who will take the #1 seed within the division for now.

Week 13: vs. Seattle Seahawks[edit]

The 49ers travelled to the Seahawks to decide who will take control of the NFC West after today's game. That winner was San Francisco.

It wasn't the highest scoring game with the 49ers third in the league in defensive points (17.8) and the Seahawks giving up (21.5). Nonetheless it was a great game.

Coming into the game the 49ers were the best ranked defense in the redzone giving up only 6 touchdowns in the redzone (1st in league) and a conversion percentage of 77% (Tied 5th).

The Seahawks made a statement with the opening touchdown in the game, in the redzone.

The 49ers couldn't get going on offense although Frank Gore put up a strong performence finishing for nearly 200 rushing yards on the night the 49ers just couldn't finish off drives.

49ers Kicker Joe Nedney struck five field goals and 15 points to give the 49ers their eighth win of the season.

Next week on Monday Night Football the 49ers for the first time since 2001 can climb to 9-4 but can also end the Cardinals playoff aspirations with a win.

With the win the 49ers improved to 8-4. The 49ers are on a four game win streak whilst the Seahawks are on a four game losing streak.

Week 14: vs. Arizona Cardinals[edit]

Last Year the Arizona Cardinals were minutes away from winning the Super Bowl. This year they will be watching the playoffs from home -- As the 49ers destroyed any chance of a playoff berth with a strong offensive showing.

Whenever the Cardinals did something special or builded momentum the 49ers ruined it with a turnover or a special teams play.

Matt Leinart threw 5 interceptions in just 30 throws. The 49ers Alex Smith has not thrown an interception for six games.

The 49ers can move up from Seed #4 to Seed #2 with a win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

With the win the 49ers improved to 9-4.

Week 15: vs. Philadelphia Eagles[edit]

The 49ers had a chance to clinch a playoff seed this week but watched the Eagles clinch their own division.

The defense kept the team in the game only giving up 17 points, but the offense could not live up to the pressure and could not score a touchdown.

Frank Gore is just four yards shy of becoming only the sixth NFL Player to rush for 2000 yards in a season. Alex Smith on the other hand has not thrown a interception since Week 8 of the NFL Season.

With the loss the 49ers fell to 9-5.

Week 16: vs. Detroit Lions[edit]

The 49ers clinched their division with a win over the Lions. They are going back to the playoffs after decade long drought.

It took them sixty minutes to shrugg off the pesimistic Lions but they got it done. With a win next week they will go into the Playoffs with the 4th seed.

The 49ers not only have the #1 defense in the redzone conceding just seven touchdowns and rank #5 at defensive percentage in the redzone with 75% success. They also lead the league in interceptions (28).

The 49ers might be the Dark Horses in the playoffs.

With the win the 49ers improved to 10-5.

Post Season[edit]

The 49ers entered the Post Season as the NFC's 4th seed. They will face the sixth seeded Green Bay Packers who are ranked #2 in the league in defense and #1 against the pass. They allowed just 274.3 yards per game and earlier in the season restricted the 49ers to just 36 passing yards although they lost 20-13. The 49ers enter the game with the #1 ranked run offense averaging 192.3 rushing yards per game, there passing attacked was last in the league averaging under 128 yards per game. The defense was revolutionised in the second half of the season boosting them from the 29th ranked defense to 12th and 2nd against points allowed.

After withstanding a last second Hail Mary attempt the 49ers beat the Packers and move on to face the New Orleans Saints.

Following their first playoff win in over 7 years the 49ers pulled off a major upset by beating the NFC Favourites the New Orleans Saints with a score of 27-14.

Locked in a intensive duel against the Minnesota Vikings the Takeaway Machine Defense of the 49ers helped the 49ers get past the Vikings and book their place in Super Bowl XLIV against the Indianapolis Colts who earlier in the day beat the San Diego Chargers 30-13.

SAN FRANCISCO -- After getting a half time pep talk from Joe Cool himself, Nate Davis couldn't help but sparkle in his playoff debut in the NFL.

Davis, who replaced an injured Alex Smith took most important snaps since the last time the 49ers were in the Super Bowl, when Steve Young took the snaps. Big Shoes to fill.

And shoes he did fill as he assisted the 49ers in their first playoff win since 2003 when they narrowly beat the New York Giants.

Davis completed 10 of 22 for 100 yards and the touchdown that put the 49ers ahead 17-6.

The 49ers who were shut down in the passing game last season threw 2 touchdowns and over 170 yards to send them to the Divisional Rounds against the New Orleans Saints.

For the Green Bay Packers it was a hard pill to swallow as they saw their Quarterback Aaron Rodgers get injured twice, the latter time he did not return.

The game was a defensive struggle for most of the first half until nerves started to settle down.

Then the San Francisco 49ers came to play football.

The 49ers began driving and found themselves courtest of rushing hard by Frank Gore and receiving demon in Vernon Davis at the goaline of the Green Bay Packers. Alex Smith then rushed in for his first rushing touchdown of the season.

The Green Bay Packers for the remainder of the half could not move the chains and relied on their defense without Charles Woodson to make plays. They didn't make the plays but they stopped the 49ers for most of the game.

Then comes in the advantage of home field. The Crowd loud and backed up on their five yard line, Ryan Grant was hit hard by Manny Lawson on which the ball was jarred loose for Isaac Sopoaga to pick up and return 2 yards to the 3 yard line who recorded 6 tackkles, 4 sacks and recovery against the Packers.

Nate Davis then found Vernon Davis in the endzone to put them ahead 17-6. It looked like it was going to be messy at this point. But the Packers are a reslient bunch.

The 49ers forced a punt and again the Packers were backed up into their own territory. This time a then Healthy Aaron Rodgers found Donald Driver for a 88 yard touchdown, who was left wide open after Shawn Spencer left him wide open after slipping.

It didn't stop there as they closed in on the 49ers, Arnaz Battle fumbled on the kickoff return which led to a fumble returned for a touchdown.

In just a matter of moments of excitement and seconds the Packers who were down 17-6 were now up 20-17.

Who knew what would happen in the 4th Quarter. Frank Gore did.

Frank Gore all season long was closing out games, touching the ball nearly 500 times and joining the club of 2000. He closed this one out by rushing for over 40 yards during the fourth quarter and was just shy of reaching his first 100 yard playoff game. A yard close.

After a long drive Frank Gore rushed into the endzone to put the 49ers back up.

After two drives by the 49ers and the Packers it was down to just 2 minutes. Would the Packers show how resilient they were or were the 49ers going to prove the world they can be a force to be reckoned with.

The Packers drove down the field. Like they had been doing all season. But they were up against a team that had 31 takeaways through the air and Matt Flynn was leading the Packers.

With just 1 snap left Flynn took a massive heave down field into the endzone of which many hands as much as 12 were in the air battling for the ball.

After the ball was tipped through the air it dropped down to the ground.

The 49ers had booked themselves in a playoff game with the #1 seeded New Orleans Saints.

NEW ORLEANS -- Tough and intimidating, Just as Mike Singletary had planned.

The revolutionised San Francisco 49ers delivered too many knockout blows and turnovers to make sure that Nate Davis outplayed Drew Brees and the high octane offense of the New Orleans Saints.

The Underdogs overcame all odds and beat the Saints fairly handily.

The Saints offense who had averaged 30 points per game was just held to 14 on the day that will be remembered forever. The turnover machine defense led by Patrick Willis forced 3 interceptions.

"It's disappointing to lose a playoff game," Brees said. "We certainly had some chances to win, but give them credit. We had chances to put the game away, but we just didn't do it."

The 49ers also had chances to win the game, and they did just that.

The Saint's got off to a hot start marching down the field 72 yards in 15 plays which ended in a touchdown pass to Colston.

That was it. The Louisiana SuperDome was measuring on the high end of the decibel scale but it soon went quiet.

The 49ers didn't care about the noise, they were written off early in the season and even after a revamped defense during the second half of the season are underdogs all the way if they can make it.

Nate Davis was nothing short of spectacular throwing for 3 touchdowns and 185 yards which led the 49ers past the Saints.

The (14-3) Saints were suppose to brush aside the (12-6) 49ers. They tried everything from bombs to bubble screens. The 49ers simply had their number.

Led by the 2009 Defensive Player of the Year Patrick Willis the 49ers made some noise on defense sacking Brees 3 times and delivering hard hits all around the field.

Brett Favre and the (11-6) Vikings better be prepared for the encounter in the NFC Championship game where the revitalised 49ers will square off and try and book it's seventh Super Bowl berth.

The Vikings narrowly beat the 49ers earlier in the season at the same venue next week by the score of 19-13. The 49ers record as the away team in the NFC Championship is a miseley 1-3. The 49ers last Championship win was 15 years ago.

MINNESOTA -- 16 long years of waiting has payed off for Jed York and the San Francisco 49ers. They are back in the Super Bowl.

The Story of the night is how the two starting Quarterbacks were out, the backups as well which left two great defenses against sluggish one dimensonal offenses run by 3rd string Quarterbacks.

Nonetheless this game will go down as one of the most intense NFC Championship games of them all. The only problem for the 49ers now is they face the (16-2) Colts for the World Championship in Florida.

They lost to the Colts earlier in the season 44-28, but that was there old look in which the defense gave up 21.8 points per game. Down the stretch the 49ers gave up just 14.5 points per game.

The Defense led the league in Interceptions (31) and takeaways (40) and fewest touchdowns allowed in the redzone. They will now face their toughest test as they face One of the most prolific Quarterbacks in NFL History.

Who threw for 318 yards and 3 touchdowns as the Colts breezed past the 49ers.

But this (13-6) 49ers team is different. Hungry for revenge.

The 49ers started off quickly against the Minnesota Vikings on the first drive of the game they conjured up a 14 play drive that took up 72 yards and more than half the time in the quarter. It was good enough to keep the Vikings off the field for more time and at least they got field goals in the time consuming drive.

The Vikings did the same. There were only 2 drives throughout the First Quarter.

The Vikings had their own tricks up their sleeves as Tavaris Jackson scrambled 58 yards to the 49ers 1 yard line of which Adrian Peterson punched through to put the Vikings on top.

Then The 49ers lost Nate Davis and couldn't get moving. Each week a player stepped up, against the Packers it was Isaac Sopoaga, against the Saints it was Nate Davis. Against the Vikings it was the whole defense.

Trailing 7-6 going into the third quarter the 49ers forced a fumble on the first play and took it back for a touchdown. They then did what they do best: Force Turnovers.

With just 2:31 left and on their own 26 yard line the Vikings began a drive to save their season and extend it. Fast forward to 1:33 and on the San Francisco 38 yard line.

As the Quarterback took the snap and tried to find Percy Harvin, Sage Rosenfels wrecklessly threw an interception to Parys Haralson to end the game and Give the 49ers their sixth Super Bowl Birth.
