REM (Real Estate Magazine) is an independent Canadian real estate trade journal. It is commonly referred to by its abbreviated title, "REM" (pronounced as one word, /ˈrɛm/).

History

[edit]

In 1989, Heino Molls launched a cable television specialty channel called Real Estate TV and needed a way to advertise its programs to real estate professionals. At the time, there was no newspaper or magazine dedicated to the real estate professional community in Canada.[2]

Molls, with his colleague Jim Adair, spoke with an advertising salesman in the food court of a shopping mall. Together, they wrote out an advertising rate card on a table napkin. Molls wrote the company's first pay cheque that day, and came up with the name "Real Estate Marketing". Adair abbreviated this to REM, which remains the name of the publication today.[2]

The first issue of REM was printed in June of 1989.

Current Operations

[edit]

REM is published 12 times a year, and remains independently owned and operated by Heino Molls. It is not affiliated with any real estate board or association.

Circulation

[edit]

REM is circulated across Canada through real estate boards and associations, mail delivery, subscriptions, and courier delivery. The publication distributes 42,500 issues nationally.

Online

[edit]

Since 2000, REM has been available online at its official website, remonline.com.

In November of 2009, remonline.com officially relaunched with a completely new design that included more content, the ability for users to comment on individual stories, as well as a completely new and expanded message board system.
