From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In 1995 Wilhelmnein was elected as the Director General of ITV, a position he held for three years. During that time he cut back spending by at least 65%, although the exact amount remains unknown. The cutbacks were received with universal skeptiscism and in 1998 Wilhelmnein retired from the position, stating it was due to personal issues.

Political Career

[edit]

Immediatly after his resignation, Wilhelmnein joined the Liberal Democrat Party. In fact, urban legend suggests Wilhelmnein left the ITV building and immediatly caught a cab to the nearest Lib Dem office. After joining, he spoke to a crowd of hundreds at the Liberal Democrat 1998 Conference, and was chosen to be the Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary. His office was based in Crawley.

In 2000 Wilhelmnein came under the spotlight when he was arrested for the theft of the Statue of Liberty during an art exhibition in Birmingham. His trial was broadcast live and a record 100 million people worldwide watched as the jury returned the verdict as "not guilty". It was later discovered that the Statue was stolen as part of a practice covert operation by the SAS. The British government and police have since been greatly criticized for the poor co-ordination of the operation. There were also unconfirmed reports that Wilhelmnein received as compensation £300,000 for the wrongfull arrest.

Work With the Internet

[edit]

Since early 2001 the Internet has been a big part of Wilhelmnein's campaigns and speeches, and he made and publicized the international "The Internet Is Serious Business" campaign. Even in the DPRK, there was a national holiday and Kim Jong-Il made a public announcement on national television, stating all world leaders should agree that the internet is serious business.

Wilhelmnein also helped to invent broadband and created MediaWiki. The Liberal Democrat official website also states Wilhelmnein has created and coded over two hundred successful internet websites.

Public Reception

[edit]

Since the trial in 2000 and Wilhelmnein's emergence as innocent, he has been very popular with the British public. Even foreign countries such as Norway are full of fans of Wilhelmnein. In 2006, Amnesty International reported there were approximately 89,000 fan clubs, worldwide.

In 2004, he was presented with an OBE by the Queen and is due to be given an honourary knighthood by the King of Spain in April.
