Kosi (born in Pennsylvania 1960) is writer and western spiritual teacher of Advaita Vedanta, which is the non-dual philosophy that originated in the scriptural texts of the Prasthanatrayi, and the canonical texts consisting of the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita and the Brahma Sutras of ancient India.[1][2][3]The primary focus of her teaching is on the life and teaching of Sri Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi who taught knowledge (Jnana) and love (Bhakti) as the two principal paths of self-realization described as the mountain path by Arther Osbourne who was a devotee of Ramana and the original editor for the Mountain Path magazine.[4][5] Since 2001 Kosi has been a student of Gangaji, who is considered the principal student and teacher of HWL Poonja better known as Papaji, who was a direct disciple of Ramana Maharshi.[3][6] Papaji is also recognized for the further popularisation of Ramana through the so-called religious or satsang movement known as Neo-Advaita.[7] Kosi also the producer of a YouTube video entitled Who Are You...Really? that has been viewed by over 618,000 people and translated into over fifty different languages.[3][8]

Biography[edit]

Early Life[edit]

Kosi was born as Jill Warner in Pennsylvania.[9] She grew up in Northern Virginia in the United States and is a graduate of Virginia Tech.[10][11] Her aunt, Gertrude "Trudy" Warner who was a voice actor on The Shadow and The Guiding Light in the 1930's and 1940's, inspired her to pursue a degree in art.[12] She was also influence by her father's military career and World War II combat experience—he was a B17 Flying Fortress Pilot and Prisoner of War (POW) during World War II.[12][13] After her graduation from Virginia Tech in 1982, she pursued a career in computer graphics with an emphasis on Aerospace and Defense, which led her to the Silicon Valley in Northern California. Her disallusionment with her career was the catalyst for her spiritual search, which began in the summer of 1996.[11][12][10]

Spiritual Awakening[edit]

Ordination of Jill L Warner aka Kosi by Reverend Matthew Garrigan of Radiant Light Ministries in San Francisco on June 6, 1999.

In 1997, Kosi, then Jill Warner, had a spiritual awakening during a workshop called the Liberty Experience developed by Rev. Matthew Garrigan.[11][14][12][15]After studying with Radiant Light Ministries for two years she was ordained as a minister in a public ceremony by Rev. Matthew Garrigan on June 6, 1999 in San Francisco.[15][3][10] Radiant Light Ministries was a multi-faith church with an emphasis on non-dual teachings that embraced the teaching of Sri Sathya Sai Baba, and other gurus and teachers, but was not limited by, nor in judgment of religious dogma or any other restrictions. Radiant Light Ministries also emphasized the teachings of Ernest Holmes who is the founder of The Science of Mind movement, Charles and Myrtle Filmore founders of the spiritual movement Unity, and Mary Baker Eddy who was the founder of Christian Science and her book Science and Health with Keys to the Scriptures.[16] After her ordination Kosi spent time studying with the Dalai Lama, Sogyal Rinpoche, and Gurumayi Chidvilasananda.[3][11][12][17]

Meeting Gangaji[edit]

Photograph taken by Kosi of Gangaji Teaching in Australia 2009

In June of 2001, after a deep prayer for an enlightened master, Kosi she was introduced to Gangaji and spent many years with her as a student and volunteer.[18] With Gangaji's support, Kosi directly realized the living presence of our inherent nature, which is synonymous with self-realization or discovering the true self.[19][3][11][12][20] She received a letter of encouragement from Gangaji to teach in 2002.[21] Her use of the mantra as a form of inquiry has been recognized to be in alignment with ancient teachings, but is also seen as departure from the teaching style of the majority of Neo Advaita teachers.[3][14][10][22][23][24]

Spiritual Name[edit]

The name Kosi was given as a silent initiation at the foot the mountain Arunachala Siva—the Master of Sri Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi.[11][12] The Kosi கொஸி (pronounced Ko-she) is also a river in India and is one of the largest tributaries of the Ganga. Its source is in Tibet and its mouth (end) is the Ganga and contains the spiritual significance associated with the Kosi River in India.[11][12]

Video[edit]

In April of 2011, Kosi produced the video entitled Who Are You…Really?[3] that has been viewed on YouTube by over 260,000 people world-wide and was subsequently copied to dotsub where it has been translated into over 40 different languages and viewed by over 580,000 people world-wide.[3][8]

Teaching[edit]

Direct Path Advaita[edit]

Kosi is non-dual teacher whose teaching style is defined as the Direct Path of Advaita Vedanta.[3][26] She also incorporates the teaching of the Vedas as well as the simplicity of Self-Inquiry. But due to the fact that she is a western teacher and influenced by the work of Gangaji, she is also considered to be a part of the Neo Advaita movement.[3][12][14]Her primary focus is on silence and self-inquiry,[3][27] as demonstrated and taught by Sri Bhagavan Ramana Marharshi and documented in the book Who Am I? (Nan Yar).[28] She also incorporates the three primary aspects of the ancient Vedic traditions of Silence (meditation), Sound (mantra), and Satsang (self-inquiry), which are viewed in India as the essential support for true liberation from the suffering nature of the egoic mind. [3]Cite error: The opening <ref> tag is malformed or has a bad name (see the help page).[14][11][29] These three aspects of inquiry are widely believed to support what is known as liberation or Self-realization, also describe as moksha in the advaita vedanta non-dual philosophy.[3][30][31][27]

Influence of Her Holiness Sri Amma Karunamayi[edit]

In July of 2011, Kosi received shaktipat initiation from Sri Amma Karunamayi,[3][12][32][33]who is recognized throughout the world as a living Saint and Avatar—one who is born enlightened as the embodiment of the Divine Mother.[34] [35]Kosi's use of Vedic mantras as a form of inquiry, is influenced by Sri Amma Karuanamayi and is widely believed to be the support essential for liberation.[3][11][12]
