Jean Paul Gaultier SAS is a French luxury fashion house founded in 1982 by Jean Paul Gaultier. It focuses on men's and women's high fashion and ready-to-wear clothes, luxury goods and accessories. Spanish company Puig maintains a majority stake in the company, which it acquired from French fashion house Hermès in 2011.

History[edit]

Early history[edit]

1999–2011: Hermès partnership[edit]

Described as "a love match rather than a business arrangement", French fashion house Hermès announced that it would purchase a 35-percent stake in Jean Paul Gaultier on 9 July 1999. Under this agreement, Hermès would facilitate an "integrated distribution strategy" for Jean Paul Gaultier, including an investment of US$23,000,000 (equivalent to $42,067,119 in 2023) and opening of 15 brand boutiques internationally.[2] Hermès increased its stake to 45-percent in 2008.[3]

2011–present: Puig partnership[edit]

Hermès confirmed that it was looking to sell its 45-percent stake in Jean Paul Gaultier on 1 April 2011. Spanish company Puig announced that it was in discussion with Hermès on 4 April, followed by an offer from Shiseido and Fung Capital on 13 April. Puig agreed to purchase the stake from Hermès on 4 May, with Gaultier himself stating that "they know what they want to achieve and they are buying Gaultier for Gaultier, not to turn it into something else" and that "sometimes [business partnerships] go on until you die, and sometimes you find a new love. It's a good thing – to move on to a new adventure".[4]

Jean Paul Gaultier exited ready-to-wear following its spring 2015 collection, instead focusing on its haute couture and perfume businesses.[5]

Gaultier himself retired following his 50th-anniversary haute couture show during Paris Fashion Week in January 2020.[6]

Jean Paul Gaultier launched its first ready-to-wear collection since spring 2015, on 28 May 2021.[7]

Fragrance[edit]

Jean Paul Gaultier fragrances have been licensed by Puig since 1 January 2016, and were previously licensed by Shiseido subsidiary Beauté Prestige International from 1991 through 31 December 2015. The BPI license was originally negotiated through 30 June 2016;[8] however, Puig acquired the license for $79.2 million and paid $22.6 million for the early termination of the license.[9] With this purchase, Puig now holds control of both the fashion and fragrance divisions of the Jean Paul Gaultier brand.[10] The 1993 women's oriental floral Classique and the 1995 men's oriental fougere Le Male have been described by the brand as "flagship" products that "represent all the Jean Paul Gaultier values".[11] Le Male was the top-selling men's fragrance in the European Union in 2012, and holds a strong market position in Australia and the United States.[12]

The fragrance house includes women's, men's, and unisex fragrances; a number of flanker fragrances have been released for each line.[13] As of May 2020, the Classique,[14] Le Male,[15] and Scandal lines are in production.[16]
