This is a list of all major characters in Chowder, an American animated television series created by C. H. Greenblatt. The show's titular character is an anthromoporphic purple composite animal, who works as an apprentice to a blue-colored chef named Mung Daal. Mung Daal operates a catering company in the series, the staff of which also includes his wife, Truffles, and a rock monster named Shnitzel. Each character is named after a food.[1]

Characters[edit]

  • Chowder (voiced by Nick Jones): A young, eccentric child who serves as a chef's apprentice under Mung Daal. Chowder lives with Mung Daal and Mung's wife, Truffles, in a room at the top of the catering business. Chowder wants to become a great chef, but he is very impulsive, and often gives in to his urges. He is always hungry and eats anything, even a customer's order. Chowder can also regurgitate objects, and is used as a storage container by the other characters. Chowder is purple in color. According to Greenblatt, he is a composite of a cat, a bear and a rabbit,[2] and his species was verified in at least one episode.[3]
  • Mung Daal (voiced by Dwight Schultz): The elderly chef who runs the catering company at which Chowder works.[4] Although his exact age has not been stated, he has mentioned that he has cooked for at least 386 years,[5] and he celebrated 450 years of marriage to Truffles (see below).[6] He is a blue-colored humanoid of indeterminate species. Mung is named after the Indian dish mung daal; Greenblatt had originally planned to give Mung an Indian accent, but later decided against it.[1]
  • Shnitzel (voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson in "The Froggy Apple Crumple Thumpkin," John DiMaggio in other episodes): A gray-colored rock monster and professional chef who works at Mung Daal's Catering Company. His vocabulary consists almost entirely of "Radda", although he sometimes says other simple words.[7] Shnitzel is the "straight man" to the other more excitable characters, and is frequently agitated. He gets stuck with menial labor or cleanup duty, as well as the heavy lifting, because he is extremely strong. Although usually angered by Chowder's antics, Shnitzel really has a soft spot for Chowder, as he cries when it was thought that Chowder has vanished forever.[7][8] Kevin Michael Richardson voiced Shnitzel for the debut episoode "The Froggy Apple Crumple Thumpkin", and was replaced at the last moment by DiMaggio due to Richardson being busy with other projects at the time.[7] He also works part-time as a comedian.
  • Truffles (voiced by Tara Strong): Mung Daal's wife, who handles the business side of Mung's catering business. She is a mushroom pixie. She is practical, but has a foul temper and easily loses patience with her husband, his staff and their customers. Greenblatt said that he based Truffles on his mother.[9] Greenblatt said that he initially found difficulty in working on any story with Truffles since the character could be "so abrasive" that the Chowder staff had to be "a little more sensitive about finding her softer side." Greenblatt said that the staff eventually decided that "a little Truffles goes a long way." Therefore she would appear occasionally in Chowder in a manner similar to how Oscar the Grouch appears in Sesame Street.[10][11]
  • Gazpacho (voiced by Dana Snyder): A storekeeper who sells strange produce and ingredients. He does his best to offer advice to Chowder when needed. He lives with his overbearing mother, who never appears. Gazpacho shows no interest in moving out and improving his own life. Greenblatt named him after the cold soup gazpacho; Greenblatt said that he did not know why the name suited the character, but that the name suited the character immediately.[1]
  • Panini (voiced by Liliana Mumy): A girl who has a crush on Chowder, and lets him know this at every opportunity. Chowder does not return the feelings, and responds with "I'm not your boyfriend!" whenever she greets him. She is an apprentice to Ms. Endive. According to Greenblatt, she is of the same composite species as Chowder,[2] although she is pink and has large ears. Originally Panini, who was named Borlotti, had pointed ears and an outfit in which only her face was visible. Her original character concept had her bully Chowder in a manner described by Greenblatt as similar to Angelica Pickles from Rugrats.[12] Greenblatt removed the pointy ears since he felt this did not fit in with the rounded shapes in Chowder. Greenblatt did not like characters similar to Angelica and believed that he needed to make Panini "cuter and sweeter."[12] Greenblatt said that the details of Panini formed when the creator decided that Panini had a crush on Chowder; since Chowder is not old enough to fall in love with females, according to Greenblatt this aspect would frustrate Chowder "in a more fun way."[12]
  • Kimchi (voiced by C.H. Greenblatt): Chowder's pet, who lives in a cage next to his bed. Kimchi is a brown-colored cloud (an anthropmorphized flatus). He likes things with odors unpleasant for the other characters, and he "talks" by making flatulent sounds.[13]
  • Kiwi (also voiced by C.H. Greenblatt): A furry stop motion pink monster that sometimes appears and says something random, then waves his arms around except when Chowder sees himself as bones in the basement Kiwi says "You can do it Chowder." He is usually seen on a green background with three flies flying around him and only his head is visible, except on the episode "Brain Grub" where you see his body fully and he is on a background of a car shop. Kiwi is also a name for a type of bird and fruit. The only time anyone ever mentioned his name in the show was in The Brain Grub.
  • Ms. Endive (voiced by Mindy Sterling): A female chef who teaches cooking to Panini with strict discipline. She's also occasionally portrayed as the show's villain. She regularly berates Mung Daal, whom she considers a rival. In the episode "Chowder's Girlfriend", it is revealed she despises boys and boyfriends because her fiancé did not show up on their wedding day. The creator describes her as Martha Stewart with Oompa-Loompa colors.[14] Greenblatt chose to name her after the endive since endive is bitter and Belgian endive is fancy; hence the character is bitter and fancy.[1] Endive's character stayed constant throughout the initial development. The long nose, which changed from a rectangular shape to a triangle shape for the final version, represents how Endive looks down at other characters. Greenblatt said that he felt that her evolution throughout the series was fun to observe, especially when William Reiss wrote plots involving Endive.[12]
  • Gorgonzola (voiced by Will Shadley): A young apprentice candle holder with a surly attitude. He resents Chowder due to him having a better job.[15] He will occasionally use Chowder, and if forced, will partner with him in games. Greenblatt does not like to eat blue cheese; since it was one of the few foods he disliked, he decided to use the name "gorgonzola" for a character who did not get along with Chowder.[1] His species is seem to be a cross between a squirrel and a mouse.
  • Ceviche (voiced by Elan Garfias): Paté's dance apprentice and is Panini's best friend. He seems to be a cross between an antelope and a goat and a reindeer. Not much is known about him yet, since he has only appeared in five episodes. What is known that his opinion on musicals is higher than that of plays, as supposedly no one dies in musicals, indicating Ceviche is sensitive when someone dies. Apparently, he was created to be a love interest for Panini, so that there would be friction between Chowder and him.
  • Thrice Cream Man (voiced by Jeff Bennett): A living scoop of Thrice Cream created by Mung Daal to cure Chowder's obsession with Thrice Cream. eventually chowder gets so sick of thrice cream mung daal succeds.
  • Rosemary (voiced by Candi Milo): A chicken in a dress. She Steals from and hates Gazpacho. She thinks she's attractive. Chowder and Gazpacho became "imaginary-superheroes" and "defeated" her by making so much noise that she never stole from Gazpacho again.
  • Reuben (voiced by Paul Reubens): A pig like character that appeared in 4 episodes. in the Party Cruise he tricked Mung into coming onto his ship and lied telling everyone he was the captain. He was the cooking instructor in certifrycation class. He tricked the gang into being his servants by faking a rat in his sandwitch in Rat Sandwitch. He also made a brief view in grubble gum buying screams. He seems to dislike Mung and everyone related to him. Mung also dislikes him, but Chowder likes him.
  • Pate (voiced by Jess Harnell): A Dancing Master and is also Ceviche's Master. He made his first appearance in Chowder's Girlfriend where he was hired by Chowder to sing a song to Panini which was titled "I'm not your boyfriend!". We haven't seen Ceviche in that episode oddly. His next appearance was in The Apprentice Games where he and his apprentice Ceviche were competing for the sake of having fun while the other contenders were only in it for the awards. In the end after he witnessed everyone's selfishness and brutality he went on to explain that the games were supposed to be about having fun but his fellow Masters had ruined it, soon after he and Ceviche discarded their medals and dissapeared into a portal in the sky. Next he was in Panini for President where he was asking Panini and Chowder some questions. Then he appeared in The Lollistops where he told Chowder and Gazpacho that the next obbsticall was a Doozie.
  • Mr. Fugu (voiced by Bob Joles): A red oddly shapen living balloon that wears a toupee and enjoys eating large amounts of food. He played an important role in Chowder and Mr. Fugu. He and his valet Foie Gras were seen again in Hands on a Big Mixer.
  • Chestnut (voiced by Tone Loc): A small character that appeared in three episodes of Chowder, The Heavy Sleeper, Chowder Loses His Hat, The B.L.T.s, and Hey Hey It's Knishmas!. Chestnut makes use of common and sometimes uncommon items as furniture for his "pad", such as Mung Daal as a dining room table, a stop sign as a living room sofa, Chowder's hat as a vacation home, and a breifcase as a hydrofoil. He is first seen sitting in a puddle in The Heavy Sleeper reciting poetry about himself. "Quote: dinga-loo, dinga-lee, Chestnut is what I be; dinga-lee, dinga-loo, if you're good, you're Chestnut too." Chestnut can sometimes be seen as an antagonist. He is also the teacher in the class giving the B.L.T.s. In this episode, he also exhibits large strength despite his small size. He is also known for incorrectly naming inanimate objects. In The BLT's, he calls pencils refrigerators, but seems to know what they are for. This was contradicted in The Heavy Sleeper when he called Mung Daal a dining room table and a stop sign he used to attack Shnitzel a sofa. Chestnut always refers to himself in the third person.
  • Arbor (voiced by Ron Perlman): An Arborian tree first seen in the episode The Arborians. He is picky and will only live in a house which he likes, usually containing marble columns and tiger statues holding lightning bolts. He talks in a accent and always consults his relatives before making a decision. When Arbor gets annoyed with someone, like Mung, he locks them in the closet, although he seems to like Chowder, making him an honorary Arborian.
  • Foie Gras (voiced by George Takei): A cat that is Mr. Fugu's valet. He is unable to speak English and is only able to say "Meow". He has a collar wrapped around his neck with a bell. His job is mostly holding Mr. Fugu's string so he won't fly away. So far, Foie Gras has only been seen in two episodes, where he stays in the kitchen and freaks out Mung and Shnitzel. Chowder was Mr. Fugu's valet that day which is why he stayed in the kitchen. He and Mr. Fugu later reappeared in Hands on a Big Mixer.
  • Marmalade (voiced by Mary Matilyn Mouser): A pig/frog makeup apprentice. Her best friend is Chowder, which made Panini think they were in love, but they're not. Marmalade actually has a crush on Ceviche, but he doesn't feel the same way.We don"t know who her master is but it might be someone at a salon. Her haid is the same shape as Chowder's.In the end Panini became friends with her. She likes chicken.
