Asylum is an Australian rock band with punk and metal influence, formed in 2009. Whilst consisting of only Daniel and Enes, they went through two name changes before settling with Asylum, these were "Crackers For Polly" and "Behind Enemy Lines", they have since been used as titled for two of their songs. They are the only band in history to have every song on every studio album a segue to the next.
Asylum released their first single, "Woah", in 2010. The song immediately became a hit in Australia, it received international recognition a month later, when the Rolling Stone gave their debut album, Self-Titled a four-star review. Asylum's popularity rose upon the release of the third single from their debut, "(Love Has Spoken) Forevermore". Their simple, yet vast guitaring and Daniel's singing and screaming have been well received by critics, and highly paraded by fans. Asylum's fifth album, Asylum (2015), brought them to great international recognition and fame. Comprising of a vast variety of influence, lyrical content which acts as somewhat of an auto-biography and two discs, Asylum is often compared to the likes of Radiohead's OK Computer.
Asylum's musical style and direction slightly evolved upon the release of Hums Of Hope (2018). It would be the first installment in their album trilogy, The Ballad Collection, which would go on to receive rave reviews from critics and be adapted to both two movies and three books. The first single from Hums Of Hope, "Lost And Found", has become the band's biggest hit to date, selling close to six million downloads from iTunes and peaking at number one in over thirty countries. The second album in the trilogy, Songs Of Salvation (2019) and it's singles received reviews of a lower standard compared to Asylum's other works, though the second single, "Waking Up Next To Strangers" became quite popular in Australia. The final installment, Requiems Of Revelation (2021) is their second most succsesful album to date. Enes has called it "a death metal, industrial and melodic punk rock cocktail".
Asylum released From The Middle Of Somewhere in 2023. Despite receiving near perfect reviews, its succsess was almost limited to Australia, New Zealand, America and the UK. Later that year they released Magilla Guerilla, with heavy anarcho influence. Magilla Guerilla followed the story of a hitman for the Australian government trying to become a comedian, it was accompanied by a novel entitled Slaughter Is The Best Medicine. Its sequel, Bring It To Us, was released a year later. Its concept was parallel to it's predecessor, hence following an Australian comedian trying to become a soldier. Asylum are currently working on what will be their final record, Asylum's Twelfth Studio Album, due for release Halloween, 2025. Daniel has described its lyrical content as "nothing new, just fifteen year look back at our first record", later in the same interview he claimed "every song is an updated version of it's predecessor. So if you listen to Self-Titled before you listen to the new record you should be able to literally feel the fifteen years in between them".
In 2020, Asylum were ranked number 57 in Rolling Stone's updated list of "the greatest artists of all time". As of January 2025, Asylum have sold seventy million records worldwide, including twenty million in Australia alone.
