Ruach AZA #2388[edit]
Ruach AZA #2388 is a chapter in The Grand Order of the Aleph Zadik Aleph. It is a member of the international youth-led fraternal organization for Jewish teenagers, founded in 1924 and currently existing as the male wing of BBYO Inc., an independent non-profit organization. It is for teens starting in 8th grade, through 12th grade. AZA's sister organization, for teenage girls, is the B'nai B'rith Girls. Ruach AZA #2388 currently resides in Temple Sholom of Flatbush in Brooklyn New York. It is a member of BAR (Big Apple Region) and was formerly the only chapter in Brooklyn. Ruach AZA was founded on March 11th 1987 and it a member of the "Big 3" (Exodus, Ruach, Leviticus) and was the second AZA chapter in Big Apple Region. It is one of the few AZA chapters that survived the Covid-19 pandemic. Ruach AZA is the only AZA chapter in Big Apple Region that does not have an abbreviation. (Exo, Lev, Maccs, Ruach). [1] Ruach AZA used to be apart of Ruach BBG during the early days, but after Ruach AZA accumulated a substantial amount of members, it became it's own chapter and was given the chapter identification number 2388.
History[edit]
Ruach AZA #2388 was formerly the only chapter in Brooklyn. This sprouted the joke that it was the "Best" Chapter in Brooklyn. Previously, all of Big Apple Region's chapters were in Queens and non-convention regional events took place majority in Queens. Which caused Ruach members to have to organize carpools and leave hours before the event started just to be there on time. Later on, chapter such as Kings Bay BBYO and Kane Street BBYO were established which gave Ruach more of a voice in deciding locations of chapter events.[2] During Ruach's founding it resided in Canarsie JCC. Ruach was then moved to reside in Madison Jewish center but was brought to Temple Sholom after Kerri, who works in the office, brought it to Temple Sholom so that her children did not have to travel such distances. Ruach had many altercations with USY throughout it's existence, but the most notable occurred when Ruach was moved to Temple Sholom. There was already a USY chapter in Temple Sholom that as functioning, once Ruach was brought in, it took a majority of the members due to it's superior programming, this caused the USY chapter to fold and Ruach absorbed all of their members.
Secession[edit]
For a brief period in 2016, the Ruach chapter was on track to secede from the Region. The regional passion was starting to dwindle and Ruach's godol favored more towards the intimate chapter meetings over the large scale regional gatherings. Along with growing tiresome of regional interference. Regional traditions such as the Blue book and Spirt were starting to appear less and less in meetings and rituals like Closing business were replaced with readings form the Communist manifesto. With Ruach's current Godol, the one heading a majority of these activities, just short of the votes needed to secede he performed a hail marry effort during that season's convention. He made the spirit skit of that year a Hamilton parody in which the words of the song about the colonies breaking away form Great Britain, with lyrics of Ruach breaking away from the Region. There was even a moment where a Ruach member played the regional director as King George telling them they'd be back. This did not result in a secession from the region but instead resulted in spirit skits needing approval from regional staff indefinitely.[3]
Co-Ed Conflicts[edit]
Ruach BBG and Ruach AZA were inseparable and almost Co-Dependent throughout their reigns and since their respective founding's. However, even though these two chapters are very much codependent and their members are mostly inseparable, they have still shared their share of conflicts in the past. For example, in 2019 Ruach AZA planned to have 2 different non standard chapter events in the latter half of the programming year. One would be a chapter overnight, and the other would be a regional dance. Years earlier there had been a dance planned by the chapter. This dance was run together by Ruach AZA and Ruach BBG, although Ruach AZA put more time and energy into the planning of the event, Ruach BBG got more money and credit out of the event. This was because Ruach BBG had much more money to put into the dance in the first place. This was because Ruach BBG had monthly membership dues at the time. They put in more money so they got more more out of the event. This took place during a period where the 37th AZA board members were still lower classmen. They had experienced this conflict and were left with prejudices against the BBG Board because this event shaped their future views. During the planning of their regional dance, a BAR Mitzvah, it was suggested by the assistant regional director that they work together. During the beginning part of meeting, a screaming match ensued between the Mazkirah, N'Siah. Godol, S'gan, and Siganit over a budgetary issue. This fight warranted the phrase "It's Ruach AZA and Ruach BBG, not Ruach BBYO". This giant tussle warranted the girl's advisor to have to break off the fight. The Assistant Regional director later made the Ruach AZA board stay after the meeting in order to have conflict resolution time. The dance was never spoken of again.
Recurring Games/Programs/ Traditions[edit]
Ruach Ball[edit]
Ruach Ball is a game where everybody stands in a circle and a hand all is bounced. The bounce has to happen at least a foot in front of the person you are throwing it to. After it bounces the person you threw it to has to catch it. If they touch it and then drop it, or they miss it all together, then they are out. If it is a bad throw or it doesn't bounce then the person who threw it is out. This game was the part A to most programs and it usually consumed the first half hour of every meeting.
Card Games[edit]
Drug Dealer[edit]
This a card game in which card are dealt. If you receive a card that is not a Jack or a King, you are a customer and your job is to buy drugs from the drug dealer. Once the drug dealer gives you a signal, which could be a wink or a tongue stick, you throw down your card. Once every customer buys the drugs the drug dealer wins. If you get a Jack, you are the drug dealer. Your job is to sell drugs to everyone except for the Detective who is the King. The Detective's job is to catch the Drug Dealer giving somebody the signal and then throw their card down and yell bust.
Secret Hitler[edit]
Secret Hitler was played every year on the bus rides to and form convention. Secret Hitler is a game that is really hard to understand and really complicated to play. The only ones who truly understood how to play the game were Jason Nagourney and Jacob Meyers. Once they graduated the game was never played again.
Card Against Humanity[edit]
Card Against Humanity is an R- Rated version of Apples to Apples. The card present in the game are very dirty and repulsive. Andrew Fourerstein, who was the regional director at that time, came to a meeting once where this game was being played because he had not told the S'gan that he was coming. Andrew was so appalled and disgusted by what he saw on the cards that he forced Ruach to fill out program forms and applications for every meeting, we were then never again allowed to have a meeting without an advisor present.
During a chapter overnight, the game was being played as one of the activities. After everyone went to sleep, Alephs Zachary Miller and Noah O'Neill stayed up all night watching To Catch a Predator videos on their phones. This was also the inspiration for the To Catch a Predator Spirit Skit years later. During this night, Noah took out the cards and was throwing them at the wall, however, on one throw he missed and the card went hurdling into the Temple Sholom kitchen. Noah and Zachary went to look to see where the card went but they could not find it. There is now a fear among the chapter that once day, the custodian will find the card while cleaning the kitchen and then see the repulsive answer on the card, and Ruach will be kicked out of the Temple.

The Big Man[edit]
The big man was a zoom bombing incident which took place during a virtual program during the 2020-2021 programming year. A prospect presumed to be named "Kyle Vechsler" (allegedly) was supposed to sign on that evening. An hour before the meeting was supposed to start a person named "iPhone" entered the waiting room.
