William Kelley is a wine critic based in Beaune, France and San Antonio, Texas. He reviews wines from Burgundy for Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, the wine publication and website founded by wine critic, Robert Parker.

Education and Early Life[edit]

Kelley was born in London and studied at St. John’s College, Oxford, completing an Bachelor of Arts with first class honors, winning a Gibbs Prize. He remained at St. John’s for post graduate study, completing both a Master of Studies, and Doctor of Philosophy in History. His doctoral thesis considered Victorian understandings of the Balkans and Ottoman Empire.[3] Kelley served as president of the Stubbs Society between 2009 and 2011, and published in a number of scholarly journals including the Proceedings of the British Academy,[4] but ultimately chose to pursue his passion for wine rather than an academic career. He credits wine writer the late Hugo-Dunn Meynell, a protégé of André Simon,[5] with his introduction to the wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy.[6] As a graduate student, Kelley presided over the Oxford University Wine Circle between 2011 and 2015, organizing weekly tastings with some of the most celebrated wineries of France, Italy, Spain, Germany, and California. During these years, he began regularly to visit the vineyards and wineries of Europe.[7]

Career[edit]

Gutiérrez began his career as an IT professional and worked as a business management executive in Madrid for more than two decades for the large multinational company, Tetra Pak, while devoting much of his free time to wine.

He is a founding member of elmundovino.com, a wine website published in Spanish, where he has written since its creation in the year 2000. He has also written for other publications belonging to the El Mundo newspaper in Spain as well as contributing to various wine and gastronomy publications in Spain, Portugal, Puerto Rico and the UK. From May 2011 to early 2013, Gutiérrez was the Spanish specialist correspondent for Jancisrobinson.com.[1] He was the main contributor of the Spanish entries for the 2008 book 1001 Wines You Must Taste Before You Die and is the co-author of The Finest Wines of Rioja and Northwest Spain published in 2011 in the UK and US and in 2012 in Japan.
