Sri. Kumman Narayanan Gurukkal (1927 – 2020) is a Kalaripayattu Gurukkal hailing from the land of Kerala in India. He is a martial artist and a Kalari Marma Treatment Master. He helped in the revival of the great martial art called Kalaripayattu in Kerala.[1]
Biography[edit]
Sri. Kumman Narayanan Gurukkal in the year 1945, is the one who revived this art in Malabar, and gave it a new lease of life, and inspired a zest for co-ordination and excellence, thus drawing disciples from all over the world. Sri. Narayanan Gurukkal gave a new dimension to Kalaripayattu, Kalari – Yoga, Kalari Marma Treatment & Ayurveda through CVN Kalari Nadakav. He was destined to achieve many things in life. He did it well creating history by his achievements.
Early life[edit]
Sri. Kumman Narayanan Gurukkal was born in Azhikode of Kannur District. His father Kumman Gopalan was a well known scholar in Ayurveda, Sanskrit and Kalarippayat. His mother was Kalyani. Hailing from the Ayurvedic family background, Narayanan Gurukkal received basic training in Kalaripayattu and Marma Chikitsa from his father Kumman Gopalan. His father worked for British Police at Kannur, later connected with the job he transferred to Vishakapattanam . Gurukkal’s Ambition had no limit, Narayanan Gurukkal migrated to Calicut to get advanced training in Kalarippayat under great masters. Narayanan Gurukkal started training under Veera Sree C V Narayanan Nair and his great disciples Gopalan Gurukkal & Kumaran Gurukkal. Later with those gurus Narayanan Gurukkal performed kalarippayat on various stages India.

Marriage and children[edit]
Narayanan gurukkal’s wife Leela was a well accomplished lady, She is literally the brain & strength behind Narayanan Gurukkal’s activities. Along with Ayurvedic medicine Narayanan Gurukkal also had Doctorate in Homeopathic Medicine. Narayanan Gurukkal has three sons, he made his sons study Kalaripayattu and Kalari Marma Treatment, all three of them became successful kalari masters

Death and afterward[edit]
Sri. K. Narayanan Gurukkal departed us on 24th Dec-2000 at the age of 73 passing on the tradition to his three sons Anil Gurukkal , Sunil Gurukkal & Gopakumar Gurukkal , who are committed to perpetuate and propagate Kalaripayattu for the benefit of the world community.
