India Portal Mission Mode Project

India Portal is an Integrated Mission Mode Project (MMP) and one of the 27 MMPs[1] of the National e-Governance Plan.

Under this project, the India Portal website [2] has been launched. The site was launched in November 2005 [3]. This is a multi-lingual website which gives users governmental information a single-window access to more than 5000 services [4]. Some of the services include applying for PAN card and filing tax returns. The security for the portal includes five layers of security, and the content is regularly updated by concerned government officials. The site is based on Open Standards and Service Oriented Architecture, and it has been implemented by the National Informatics Centre(NIC) along with International Business Machines(IBM) [5] The site includes accessibility feature for differently-abled people [6] and people with handheld devices [4]. The portal has 70,000 registered users, 7 million monthly hits, provides links to 6700 government websites, facilitates public participation, and provides an website to governmental organizations/departments to launch online services. It is hosted at a NIC Data Centre with Disaster Recovery System at Hyderabad. It’s functioning is governed by several committees including Content Advisory Committee, Coordination Committee, and a Project Review and Steering Group. It has a financial outlay of Rs 23.35 crore.
