This is a chronology of activities by the Basque nationalist and separatist organisation ETA, from 1990 to 1999. For actions before and after this period see Chronology of ETA actions. Although not being caused directly by ETA, relevant kale borroka attacks, as well as street battles between Basque nationalist and police forces, and key arrests are also included in the list.

1990[edit]

  • January 30: A National Police officer is killed when a bicycle bomb explodes in Galdakao, Biscay.[1]
  • February 16: ETA frees an industrialist from Pamplona, Navarre held since November 24, 1989.[2]
  • February 27: President of the National Court, Fernando de Mateo Lage, is seriously injured when a parcel bomb explodes at his home in Madrid.[3]
  • February 28: A Correos employee is seriously injured when a letter bomb went of in a postal office in Madrid.[4]
  • March 1: A Spanish Army lieutenant is shot dead in San Sebastián, Gipuzkoa.
  • March 13: A corrections officer is shot dead in San Sebastián, Gipuzkoa.
  • April 4: A Civil Guard is shot dead in Pasaia, Gipuzkoa.
  • April 6: A suspected drug dealer and his wife are shot dead in San Sebastián, Gipuzkoa.[5]
  • April 7: 4 Civil Guards are slightly injured when ETA members throw six grenades at them in Lekunberri, Navarre.[6]
  • April 19: A woman working for the Seville Expo '92 is injured when a letter bomb explodes at her office in Seville.[7]
  • April 22: In a statement sent to the newspaper Egin, ETA warns the Seville Expo will be one of its main targets.[8]
  • April 23: A corrections officer is seriously injured when a parcel bomb explodes in a Carabanchel prison in Madrid. Another bomb sent to the Ministry of Justice is defused by police.[9]
  • May 9: Two bombs explode along the Vuelta a España route between logroño, La Rioja and Pamplona. No one was injured.[10]
  • June 13: A retired lieutenant is shot dead in San Sebastián, Gipuzkoa.[11]
  • June 25: A shoot-out between ETA members and Civil Guards in a valley in Lumbier, Navarre leaves two ETA members and a Civil Guard dead.
  • June 28: A retired captain is shot dead in San Sebastián, Gipuzkoa.[12]
  • August 13: ETA warns of a campaign of bomb attacks against Renfe railways.[13]
  • August 14: A bomb explodes in a railway line between León-Gijón. No one was injured.[14]
  • August 21: A member of ETA accidentally blows himself up when carrying a bomb inside his car in Oiartzun, Gipuzkoa.[15]
  • August 17: A car bomb carried with 60kgs of explosives goes off in front of a police station in Burgos, injuring 48. A bomb went off in a Madrid-Oviedo railway in Ávila, causing no injuries.[16]
  • September 2: A remote-controlled car bomb carried with 60kgs of explosives goes off in Bilbao, killing a Civil Guard, a civilian and injuring two municipal officers.[17]
  • September 9: Two bombs cause a big fire in a Repsol refinery in Tarragona. Spanish Marxist-Leninist organisation GRAPO claimed responsibility but police blamed ETA for the attack, which caused no injuries.[18]
  • September 12: A car bomb explodes in a Civil Guard barracks in Cartagena, Murcia, injuring 17.[19]
  • September 18: A member of ETA is killed in a shoot-out between police officers and members of ETA.[20]
  • October 7: A barman is shot dead in Plentzia, Biscay.[21]
  • October 17: A car bomb loaded with 50kgs of explosive is defused by police in San Sebastián, Gipuzkoa.[22]
  • October 23: After a warning call from ETA, a car bomb loaded with 70kgs of explosive is defused in Pesués, Cantabria.[23]
  • November 18: A truck bomb loaded with 300kgs of explosive goes off in Santurtzi, Biscay killing two National Police officers and injuring two others.[19]
  • November 23: A car bomb loaded with 40kgs of explosives goes off in front of a Civil Guard barracks in Sant Carles de la Ràpita, Tarragona. No one was injured.[19]
  • December 8: A car bomb explodes in Sabadell, Barcelona killing 6 National Police officers and injuring 10 people, including two other police officers.[24]
  • December 20: A car bomb explodes in Valencia, injuring 12.[19]

1991[edit]

  • January 2: The military governor of Gipuzkoa is shot dead in San Sebastián.[25]
  • January 8: A bomb attached to a car explodes in Bilbao, injuring two people related to family linked with drug dealing.[26]
  • January 9: A bomb attached to a van explodes in Bilbao, seriously injuring a man linked with drug dealing.[27]
  • January 10: A bomb attached to a car explodes in San Sebastián, injuring one person.[28]
  • January 11: The man injured in the January 9 attack dies in the hospital.[29]
  • January 17: ETA sends 200 letters to businessmen demanding the revolutionary tax.[30]
  • January 18: A bomb explodes in San Sebastián, destroying the home of a Civil Guard. No one was injured.[31]
  • January 23: A bobm attached to a car explodes in San Sebastián, causing no injuries. [32]
  • January 25: Two bombs explode in San Sebastián causing only material damage.[33]
  • January 28: Located a car bomb loaded with 40kgs of explosive in Sabadell, Barcelona.[34]
  • January 31: A retired Civil Guard is shot dead in Bilbao.[35]
  • February 4: Two bombs explode next to policeman houses in San Sebastián. No one was injured.[36]
  • February 5: A bomb explodes in a building home to many policemen in San Sebastián. No one was injured.[37]
  • February 9: A shoot-out between Special Operations Group members and a commando of ETA leaves a police officer and a member of ETA injured. The whole commando was dismantled.[38]
  • February 14: A bomb explodes in an army patrol boat in Hondarribia, Gipuzkoa. No one was injured. Another bomb was defused in San Sebastián.[39]
  • February 15: A car bomb loaded with 43kgs of explosives goes off in Málaga causing material damage but no injuries.[40]
  • February 20: A bomb explodes in Pamplona, destroying a excavator used for the construction of the Autovía A-15, targeted by ETA.[41]
  • February 21: A bomb explodes in a bank office in Pamplona. No one was injured.[42]
  • March 2: A truck bomb explodes in Somorrostro, Biscay, injuring 5 Civil Guard and a civilian.[43]
  • March 3: An explosive device goes off in San Sebastián. No one was injured.[44]
  • March 4: A member of the board of Ferrovial is shot dead in Valencia. Later that day in the same city, police safely exploded a car bomb next to a shopping mall.[45] [46]
  • March 7: A car bomb loaded with 30kgs of explosive goes off in Madrid. No one was injured.[47]
  • March 16: A bomb explodes next to a football stadium in San Sebastián, killing a Civil Guard and injuring 5 other people.[48]
  • March 18: The 'number two' of ETA, Josu Mondragón, is arrested in Anglet, France.[49]
  • March 19: A bomb placed inside a nightclub in Barakaldo, Biscay is defused by police.[50]
  • March 20: A car bomb loaded with 25kgs of explosives and placed next to military buildings in Madrid is safely exploded by police.[51]
  • March 21: A bomb explodes in Bilbao, killing a street vendor. Another bomb was defused by police.[52]
  • March 27: 4 Civil Guards are injured after a grenades and bomb attack Mungia, Biscay.[53]
  • April 8: A bomb attached to a car kills a National Police officer and injures his wife in Barakaldo, Biscay.[54]
  • April 12: A retired Civil Guard is injured when a letter bomb explodes at his home of Argamasilla de Calatrava, Ciudad Real.[55]
  • April 15: A bomb attached to a car explodes in San Sebastián, killing the daughter of a Civil Guard and injuring him and two other children. On the same day, a bomb exploded in front of a Civil Guard barrracks in Torremolinos, Málaga, injuring 4 Civil Guards.[56][57]
  • April 18: Police finds 20kgs of explosives belonging to ETA in Barberà del Vallès, Barcelona.[58]
  • April 24: A bomb attached to a car is defused by police in Burgos.[59]
  • April 25: Two bombs explode inside a Civil Guard barracks in Los Arcos, Navarre, injuring 3.[60]
  • April 27: Three people are injured when an ETA sniper team shots at 1,000 people gathered for an army event in San Sebastián.[61]
  • April 29: Three members of the armed organisation Iraultza, linked to ETA, are killed when carrying a bomb inside their car in Sestao, Biscay. A bomb explodes in Bilbao, injuring 4 and another bomb went off in Barakaldo, causing no injuries.[62]
  • May 2: A bomb explodes in Alsasua, Navarre after a warning call from ETA. No one was injured.[63]
  • May 6: A bomb explodes in Pasaia killing a Civil Guard and injuring another one.[64]
  • May 9: A bomb attached to a car explodes in Ortuella, Biscay, killing a Civil Guard.[65]
  • May 20: A car bomb loaded with 50kgs of explosive goes off in front of a Civil Guard barracks in Casalarreina, La Rioja. No one was injured.[66]
  • May 24: 6 bombs explode in restaurants and shopping centres around the provinces of Málaga and Alicante. No one was injured.[67]
  • May 28: The Italian faction of ETA claims responsibility for three bomb attacks against Spanish interests, including the embassy, in Rome. No one was injured.[68]
  • May 29, 1991: A car bomb loaded with 70 kg of explosives is detonated inside a Civil Guard barracks located next to a school in Vic, Barcelona. 10 people are killed, 4 of them children, and 44 are injured. The day after the bombing, two members of the ETA cell which carried out the attack, were killed by the Civil Guard in a raid on a house at Lliçà d'Amunt, near Barcelona. [69]
  • May 30: A bomb attached to a car explodes in Bilbao, injuring a National Police officer.[70]
  • June 5: A bomb attached to a car explodes in Madrid, killing an Army lieutenant.[71]
  • June 6: The "Biscay commando" is dismantled and its members arrested after a shoot-out if police officers in Barakaldo.[72]
  • June 11: Two bombs explode against Spanish interests in Milano and Bologne. No one was injured.[73]
  • June 12: A bomb explodes in Madrid, killing two National Police officers and injuring 4.[74]
  • June 13: A Civil Guard is shot dead in Valle de Trápaga-Trapagaran.[75]
  • June 22: Italian police defused a bomb placed by ETA in Rome.[76]
  • June 24: A car bomb explodes in Madrid, injuring 5 police officers and destroying 100 flats, a police station and a supermarket.[77]
  • June 25: A bomb attached to a car of a police officer fails to explode in Basauri, Biscay.[78]
  • June 28: A parcel bomb sent to a Seville prison kills 4 people (a corrections officer, two inmates and a relative of one of them) and injures 30 other people.[79]
  • July 1: A parcel bomb explodes in Madrid, killing two bomb disposal officers and seriously injuring another one.[80]
  • July 3: The other officers injured in the July 1 attack dies in the hospital.[81]
  • July 6: Dozens of people are injured during a one-hour-long street battle on the eve of the San Fermines in Pamplona.[82] On the same day two bomb exploded in Spanish buses in Rome. No one was injured.[83]
  • July 11: Two bombs explode in the Spanish consulates of Munich and Düsseldorf. Another bomb was defused in a bank office of Munich. No one was injured.[84]
  • July 15: ETA warns travel agencies working for Spain.[85]
  • July 25: A car bomb explodes in front of a Civil Guard barracks in Irún, Guipuzkoa, injuring 11 people. Another bomb had previously exploded in a bar of the same town. No one was injured.[86]
  • July 26: A bomb attached to a car explodes in Hondarribia. No one was injured.[87]
  • July 27: A car bomb loaded with 25kgs of explosives goes off in San Sebastián, causing great material damage but no injuries.[88]
  • July 28: A car bomb loaded with 20kgs of explosives goes off in Getxo, Biscay, killing a Civil Guard and injuring another one.[89]
  • July 30: A small bomb explodes in a hotel close to where the Kings of Spain were staying in San Sebastián, while many banks offices and other Spanish interests were attacked by pro-ETA demonstrators.[90] On the same day two bombs exploded in Palma, Majorca injuring 2 people.[91]
  • August 2: A bomb explodes in Madrid, injuring two people related to the Autovía A-15 highway construction.[92] On the same day, ETA warned of a new campaign of attacks against railways.[93]
  • August 3: Two bombs explode in railways in Toledo and Palencia. No one was injured but the explosions caused a great traffic chaos around Spain.[94] On the same day, a bomb exploded in the branch of a Spanish bank in Milano, while another bomb was defused in front of a tourism office. No one was injured.[95][96] Also on that day, two members of ETA stole guns from a military base in Araca, Araba.[97]
  • August 4: ETA warns of a bomb explosion in the Madrid-Valladolid railway.[98]
  • August 7: A bomb explodes in a railway line in Olmedo, Valladolid. No one was injured.[99] On the same day, a drug dealer was shot dead in Irún.[100]
  • August 9: A parcel bomb explodes in a government building in Logroño, injuring 4.[101] On the same day, police defused an explosive device in the Madrid-Zaragoza railway line, while Italian police defused two bombs in Spanish travel agencies in Rome.[102][103]
  • August 13: A parcel bomb sent to a person working for the Autovía A-15 is defused by police.[104] On the same day, two bombs exploded in bank offices in Madrid and Pamplona. No one was injured.[105]
  • August 14: A 10kgs bomb is defused in the centre of Bilbao.[106]
  • August 15: 150 people injured in street battles between Basque nationalist and police officers.[107]
  • August 16: A bomb explodes in front of the Spanish Culture Institute of Rome. No one was injured.[108]
  • August 17: A 4-hour shoot-out in San Sebastián between the "Donosti commando" of ETA and Civil Guards leaves 3 members of ETA killed and 2 Civil Guards injured.[109] Later that day, 200 people confronted police and caused great incidents in Bilbao and San Sebastián.[110] On the same day, two bombs went off in Barakaldo, without injuring anyone and another bomb exploded in the Madrid-Irún railway line.[111][112]
  • August 18: 300 people throw rockets at police in the centre of Bilbao.[113] On the same day, a home-made bomb went off in Miranda de Ebro, Burgos. No one was injured.[114]
  • August 20: A bomb explodes next to a railway line in Torremontalbo, La Rioja. No one was injured.[115]
  • August 23: A bomb explodes in the Spanish consulate in Florence, while another one goes off in a Spanish company office in Livorno in Italy.[116] No one was injured. On the same day, two people were seriously injured and 70 others slightly in street battles of after police banned a homage to the Basque flag in Bilbao.[117]
  • August 29: A member of the 'Biscay commando' dies in a shoot-out between ETA members and police officers in Bilbao. Three other people were injured. [118]
  • August 31: A book-bomb explodes in Madrid, injuring a National Police officer.[119]
  • September 1: A Ertzaintza injured during the August 29 shoot-out dies in the hospital.[120]
  • September 16: A car bomb explodes in Mutxamel, Alicante, killing three people, two of them police officers, and injuring 7.[121]
  • September 27: 10 police officers injured during the celebration do the Basque soldier day.[122]
  • September 30: 42 jailed members of ETA start a hunger strike.[123]
  • October 2: Three police officers injured when two bombs explode in two bank offices in Bilbao.[124]
  • October 12: A bomb explodes in a military building in San Sebastián, injuring a retired army sergeant.[125]
  • October 17: Three car bomb attacks in Madrid on the same day. The first explosion killed an army lieutenant, the second injured two people and the third injured a commander and his sister.[126]
  • October 18: A homemade bomb explodes in front of a bank office in Pamplona. No one was injured.[127]
  • October 23: Two Civil Guards are shot dead inside a bar in San Sebastián.[128]
  • October 24: A car bomb is defused by police in Zaragoza.[129]
  • October 25: A member of ETA is killed and another one injured when a bomb they were making explodes in their flat of Bilbao.[130]
  • October 31: A car bomb is safely exploded by police in Palma.[131]
  • November 1: A homemade bomb explodes in front of an army court in Pamplona. No one was injured.[132]
  • November 7: A two year old boy is killed when a car bomb explodes in Erandio, Biscay. Two other people, including his dad, were injured.[133]
  • November 16: A bomb destroys a construction office in Bilbao.[134]
  • November 19: A Guardia Civil star sergeant is shot dead by members of ETA in Galdakao, Biscay.[135]
  • November 22: A bomb sent to a businessman is defused in Pamplona.[136]
  • November 25: The owner of a bar is shot dead in San Sebastián.[137]
  • November 28: A 1-kilo bomb placed in front of a bar in Santurtzi is defused by police.[138]

1992[edit]

  • January 2: A bomb is found and defused in the Spanish consulate in Hamburg, Germany.[139]
  • January 6: An excavator is set on fire in Zestoa, Gipuzkoa.[140]
  • January 8: A Spanish army commander is shot dead and two soldiers are injured in Barcelona.[141]
  • January 14: A National policeman is shot dead in Bilbao.[142]
  • January 15: Spanish Council of State member Manuel Broseta is shot dead in Valencia. A few hours later, a car bomb explodes injuring a police officer.[143]
  • January 16: Two Army sub-officers are shot dead in Barcelona.[144]
  • January 23: A 2kgs bomb explodes in Vitoria. No one was injured.[145]
  • February 6: Four soldiers and a civilian are killed when a car bomb loaded with 30kgs of explosives is detonated by remote control in central Madrid.[146]
  • February 9: A car bomb explodes in Murcia, killing a National police officer. On the same day, ETA announces it will keep killing "until the 21st century".[147]
  • February 12: A bomb exlodes in bank in Pamplona. No one was injured.[148]
  • February 19: A car bomb explodes in Santander, killing three people and injuring 17, all civilians.[149]
  • February 24: A man injured in the February 19 attack dies in hospital. On the same day, a parcel bomb is defused in San Sebastian.[150][151]
  • February 25: A Civil Guard is shot dead in Getxo, Biscay.[152]
  • March 6: A 5-kilo bomb is defused by police at a restaurant in Mañaria, Biscay.[153]
  • March 18: A Civil Guard is killed when a car bomb goes off in Lliçà d'Amunt, Barcelona.[154]
  • March 19: A car bomb explodes in Sant Quirze del Vallès, Barcelona, killing one person. Hours later, another car bomb goes off in Lliçà d'Amunt, killing a police officer.[155]
  • March 23: A car bomb explodes in central Madrid, killing the son of a Spanish army member.[156]
  • March 29: The top leaders of ETA, including the leader of the organization and the head of the commandos, the ideologist and the head of explosives, are arrested in Bidart, France.
  • March 31: A former solider is injured by a letter-bomb in Madrid. He died on April 1.[157][158]
  • April 7: A letter bomb sent to a prison officer is defused in Las Palmas.[159]
  • April 8: In its first statement after the Bidart arrests, ETA says it will keep killing.[160]
  • April 11: A train is set on fire in Oiartzun, Gipuzkoa.[161]
  • April 13: A homemade bomb explodes in Bilbao. No one was injured.[162]
  • April 23: A police officer is shot dead in Irun.[163]
