Atmospheric iron refers to iron particles suspended in the atmosphere in aerosol form. About 95% of global atmospheric iron is part of mineral dust lifted from deserts – mostly the Sahara desert – by winds. The remaining 5% comes from combustion sources such as industrial activity and the burning of biofuels.[1]
