Bernhard Willhelm (born 1972 in Ulm, Baden-Württemberg) is a Paris-based, German avant-garde fashion designer who studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Belgium from 1994-1997.[1] During his studies, Willhelm worked under designers such as Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen, Dirk Bikkembergs, and his tutor, Walter Van Beirendonck.[2] Willhelm works with business partner Jutta Kraus in conceptualizing collections.
Willhelm has collaborated with fashion labels such as Misericordia, Mykita, Camper, and uslu airlines. As well, he regularly works with contemporary artist Carsten Fock, who designed Willhelm's trademark typeface and occasionally contributes to the collections.
In 2007, Willhelm designed the costumes for Icelandic musician Björk's world tour in support of her sixth studio album, Volta. In addition, he designed the fibreglass sculpture for the album cover, which was shot by fashion photographer Nick Knight.[3]
Willhelm and Kraus's practice extends beyond the traditional catwalk; in 2012, they curated the sculpture exhibition, EXPERTS: DOOMSDAY PREDICTIONS HAVE NO BASIS IN FACT OR HISTORY at the Middelheim Museum. Museum exhibitions of their own work takes on the aesthetic of art installations rather than strictly fashion exhibitions.
