HMS Hermes was an early “flat deck” aircraft carrier, the first to commissioned as an aircraft carrying vessel. It maintained the largest air wing for a ship in the world, until the refit and conversion of German pre-dreadnought SMS Preussen, which held 28 aircraft during normal operation. Hermes was involved in many major actions of the war, and was eventually sunk in the decisive “Battle for the Atlantic”, by the USS South Carolina.
HMS Hermes was initially part of the Grand Fleet once commissioned, and therefore took part in the Battle of Jersey, where a French task-force led by Courbet and Paris was defeated during their bombardment of British fortifications on the Channel Islands. HMS Hermes
