Orbis Technologies, Inc. is an American technology firm that specializes in providing advanced semantic text analytic solutions. The company was incorporated in 2005 by Brian Ippolito, a graduate of MIT’s System Design and Management Program (SDM)[1] and former Air Force officer[2] who, while enlisted, oversaw contractors who developed large-scale mission-critical software systems for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance.[3] The firm provides a semantic infrastructure that integrates multiple existing open source (OS), commercial off-the-shelf (COTS), and government off-the-shelf (GOTS) entity extractors to produce an entity extraction result in standard industry data formats,[4] which include eXtensible Markup Language (XML) and Resource Description Framework (RDF). Orbis is one of the first technology companies to apply semantic technology and cloud computing beyond the tactical intelligence domain[5] to commercial sectors,[6] and even the world of museum informatics.[7] It develops custom-built cloud-based analytics, using MapReduce, to support entity extraction, relationship identification, and semantic search in a Hadoop cloud-processing environment,[8] for a variety of purposes ranging from biomedical informatics[9] to military DCGS programs.[10] The cloud-based services involve transforming data to a format that can be processed by entity extractors, generate artifact metadata, and parse structured data elements; entity enhancement[11] and disambiguation solutions[12] resolve entity conflicts[13] and enable accurate cross-document correlation.[14] Orbis' Chief Technology Officer, Steve Hamby, is regarded as one of today's most prominent Semantic Web experts,[15] and has authored articles on XML, Natural Language Processing, Linked Data, and semantic technology topics.[16] The company holds its corporate office in Annapolis, Maryland, and additional offices in Carlsbad (Calif.), Jacksonville and Orlando (Fla.), and Warner Robins (Ga.)
