I have learned to stay away from some subjects

[edit]

Things I don't touch:

  • Street art and Juxtapoz stuff: Jason Shawn Alexander and Tony Juliano
  • Soviet and Post Soviet stuff: Lucien Dulfan (I have no expertise with the soviet stuff and in other languages)
  • Sub genres like Railroad (H. W. Griffiths), Watercolors, Wildlife (Linda St. Clair), etc. They have their own prize systems, and I know nothing about it.
  • Commercial/journalistic Photography is tricky too, because of the proliferation of open call awards, most of which carry very little authority.
  • Animation/comics: Tim Rogerson especially Disney and Marvel fan stuff.

Art+Feminism Articles that would be !Keep at AfD

We will look closely at the articles in bold.

These come from the Wikipedia:Meetup/ArtAndFeminism/Tasks list

[edit]
  • Jennifer Weih - it is all regional, and there is very little beyond exhibition pages. Few reviews.
  • Julia Csekö - depends on whether AfD decides if Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, and Gilberto Chateaubriand Collection, Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil count as Notable Museums. Really, whether the Belkin does... https://www.juliacseko.com/about -- Template removed FriDaInformation (talk) 16:25, 8 June 2020 (UTC)
  • Eva Struble CV [2]. One solo show at MCA San Diego, and one Art in America review, but no other reviews, and mostly regional exhibitions.
  • Margaret Rinkovsky 1981 SECA Award, but most of her subsequent exhibitions have been regional. [3]
  • Francoise Jean - we have found it hard to find RS to establish N for Caribbean artists like this
  • Tatiana Echeverri Fernandez - maybe based on these two exhibitions listed here, but this major news incident probably wouldn't make a huge difference because of WP:BLP1E
  • Elizabeth Crawford (painter) lots of shows at Jack Shainman, but no really significant exhibitions, or collections [4] and thin bibliography [5]
  • Judy Hoffman (artist) [6] -- The NYT article only briefly mentions her. She lists Instagram posts in her Bibliography. But she has had a lot of gallery shows, and claims to be in collections, but the might be artist books in special collections, or just in library collections. Would require some digging.

[edit]
  • Susanne Crane [7] Exclusively regional group exhibitions, with no evidence of any WP:RS covering her work, including in a Database search -- there might be more in a deep newspaper search. These two regional papers are the only independent sources on the article (1) (2)
  • Mandy Wilkinson one news story that said that she was the most copied british painter. But not sustained coverage.
  • Geeta Vadhera No WP:RS. All I could find was this list of exhibitions [8]

Non Art+Feminism Articles

[edit]

We will look closely at the articles in bold.

These come from this PetScan search: http://petscan.wmflabs.org/?psid=16108842 and a search for Agora Gallery, a well known vanity gallery.

  • Robb Havassy - The work is garbage, and he won't pass NARTIST, but he probably passes GNG for the modeling and surfing.

Toss Up

[edit]
  • J. Craig Thorpe - Unclear. Commercial artist who has worked for Amtrak. Probably will end up as a delete, but sometimes these really specialized ones surprise me. Here is his bio: https://jcraigthorpe.com/artist-profile/ Does this commission and article constitute enough? Probably not.
  • Sevgi Çağal - Very little there, but whatever is there is in Turkish, so I tread lightly. I don't know the Istanbul scene at all.
  • Lola Lonli - Pretty wild. Definitely promo, but unclear if it is promocruft. I don't know the Russian institutions well enough to wade through it. But should be flagged for Promotion and Notability for someone else to assess with Russian Language.
  • Paul du Toit - Vanity Gallery: Florence Biennale, but was nominated for (but didn't win) a legit award from Diamler Foundation. There seem to be some sources buried, and might reveal themselves in a deep newspaper search. If so, it would probably be a GNG.

[edit]
  • Museum of Young Art - Insufficient WP:RS to VERIFY NCORP. Only three of the sources in the article are still live that actually talk about the establishment in more than a passing reference. Two of these appear to be press releases that have been republished in Der Standard (first, second). The third is just a very short review or maybe just a listing of an exhibition, which includes a photograph. None of this is sufficient to meet NCORP. Plus the establishment is defunct, their website is dead and squated, and the whole article is clearly promocruft.
  • Álvaro Zardoni - Insufficient independent WP:RS to establish GNG or NARTIST: most of the sources are just exhibition listings, rather than reviews. This one is a review. His website doesn't offer much more: http://www.galleriadante.com/zardoni-biography.html
  • Aleksander Balos - Many Vanity Gallery: Florence, Agora, NYarts But Ann Nathan Gallery, Chicago, IL is legit. His bio doesn't have any WP:RS (http://www.aleksanderbalos.com/about/) and the only WP:RS I could find was in American Artist, but it is just a listing of the biographies of 20 painters on a residency: Doherty, M. Stephen. "Into the Heart of the Southwest: 20 Painters Interpret the Forbes Trinchera Ranch: Forbes and American Artist Again Invited a Group of Artists to Spend a Week Together Interpreting a Vast Colorado Ranch in Their Choice of Medium, Subject, and Style.(Cover Story)." American Artist 71, no. 774 (2007): 14-29.
  • Trevor Carlton - Non notable painter. WP:RS to VERIFY GNG or NARTIST. All the references are either passing metions, or they are repostings of his own biography.
  • Grant Hayunga - Non notable painter. WP:RS to VERIFY GNG or NARTIST. Here is his most current CV: https://gebertcontemporary.com/artists/79/ This is the only (passing) ref I could find, plus a passing mention in an Art in America listing from 2006: King, Sarah. "SANTA FE SUMMER PREVIEW." Art in America 94, no. 6 (2006): 59,61,63.
  • Christopher Hudgens - no WP:RS to VERIFY GNG or NARTIST. Here is his bio http://hudgens.us/about/artist-resume/ He worked for Bad at Sports podcast for 10 years, but I don't think that is enough.
  • Diego Jacobson no WP:RS to VERIFY GNG or NARTIST. Even though Miami show had a review [9] LMNT is a rental space [10] but has traces of the defunct gallery that published the books [11] which claims a quote from Artnews, but nothing that can be verified [12] The Museums are sketchy at best. Museo de las Casas Reales is a historical museum that only has a collection of weapons. There is no Caguas Art Museum, P.R., only a folk art museum. There is a Museum of Contemporary Art of the Municipality of Cuzco, Peru though I cannot verify his inclusion in the permanent collection.
  • Keith Morant Laced with Vanity Gallery venues and publications: Manhattan Arts International, New York Arts Magazine, Palm, Florence. The one question is to verify the award, and establish whether it has bearing on notability. I did a pretty thorough search of the databases, and couldn't find any reference to it, beyond this book which is only held in 19 libraries, all but one of them in NZ. I looked at Center for Research Libraries (CRL), Gale InfoTrac Newsstand, and LexisNexis. The Auckland Star is only available on the National Library in digital form until 1945 and the new zealand herald archives don't go back very far. What I can say is that I have only found reference to this award on four pages, these are artist biographies of a dozen+ artists who won or were nominated for this award; only one of them has a page on Wikipedia: Megan Jenkinson, Philippa Blair, and Julian Dashper; only the first one even mentions the award, and for all of them their notability is based on having work in multiple national museums. Additionally, some people list it when they were only finalists, and given merit prizes, which is to say they weren't the actual recipient.

[edit]
  • Scott A. Spencer no WP:RS to VERIFY GNG or NARTIST -- I can't even verify he existed. Notability flag was added 10 years ago, and very little has changed since.
  • Mihai Cotovanu - Non notable painter. No WP:RS to VERIFY GNG or NARTIST. The article was an auto-biography written in 2010 that was flagged for notabilty then but has not been improved. In part because there are no sources to improve it with. The one article I could find is a human interest story about him painting.
  • Jennifer Hogwood - Non notable painter. No WP:RS to VERIFY GNG or NARTIST.
  • Nada Herman-Witkamp - Agora is a known Vanity Gallery, and no WP:RS to VERIFY GNG or NARTIST. All I found in a database search was an article about her new house, from a "Style and Living" angle: "An artist's retreat." Sydney Morning Herald [Sydney, Australia], 10 Sept. 2011, p. 10. Gale Academic OneFile, https://link-gale-com.central.ezproxy.cuny.edu/apps/doc/A279528862/AONE?u=cuny_centraloff&sid=AONE&xid=d38ef3f7. Accessed 11 Apr. 2020.
  • Thomas J. Strickland - no WP:RS to VERIFY GNG or NARTIST, I could only find a passing mention in a Florida paper, and an exhibition listing in a travel section of the NYT. Also, lists 'Who's Who' which is a big red flag. I searched academic databases, via OneSearch. Of note, this article was created in 2011 by a User:Strklnd which implies a WP:COI. It was flagged for notability the day after creation, but hasn't improved in 9 years. --Theredproject (talk) 17:25, 4 May 2020 (UTC)
  • Don Sahli - Non notable painter. WP:RS to VERIFY GNG or NARTIST. Just a few listings in a very local Colorado newspaper. I searched academic databases, via OneSearch.
  • Pari Ravan - Every flavor of Vanity Gallery: Florence, Agora, Who's Who, Broadway Gallery, Cannes. Museum of Art Solingen doesn't exist, the other "museums" are Vanities.
  • Emil Kazaz Florence is a known Vanity Gallery, and no WP:RS to VERIFY GNG or NARTIST. The LA Times is just a passing reference.
  • Bahadır Gökay Florence and Izmir are known Vanity Gallery, and no WP:RS to VERIFY GNG or NARTIST. I can't find any info on the International Drawing Biennial Kosovo, or The Biennial of Contemporary Art 'De Nittis' (Italy) but the was a show with an open call International Biennial of Drawing Pilsen, for which an award does not establish N.
