This list of bus accidents in London provides details of bus accidents in London. It also includes bus-related incidents such as bombings. This list only includes accidents involving buses under the control of the London Passenger Transport Board, London Transport Executive, London Transport Board, London Transport Executive (GLC), London Regional Transport and Transport for London. From 2008 to 2013, 1,889 people have been seriously injured or killed by buses in London and 6% of bus accidents resulted in an injury, according to figures from Transport for London.[1][2]
1900s
[edit]- On 18 February 1996, a bomb exploded on route 171 in Aldwych. The bomb was with Edward O'Brien, an Irish Republican Army volunteer, when it accidentally went off on the bus. Eight people were injured in the blast and O'Brien was killed.[3][4][5][6][7]
2000s

[edit]- On 21 June 2004, a black woman bus driver on route 328 was shot in the stomach with nail gun on Great Western Road.[8]
2005
[edit]- On 7 July 2005, a Dennis Trident 2 on route 30 was involved in a terrorist attack perpetrated by Hasib Hussain, a bomb in whose rucksack exploded, killing thirteen other passengers as well as himself. The explosion ripped the roof off the top deck of the bus and destroyed the back of the vehicle. The detonation took place on Tavistock Square. The bus was on diversion due to earlier multiple attacks on the London Underground.[9][10][11][12] The bus was replaced by the first Alexander Dennis Enviro400 produced, named Spirit of London.[13] The replacement bus was set alight in an arson attack near Walthamstow Central bus station on 19 October 2012.[14]
2007

[edit]- On 11 February 2008, a route 24 bus had its roof ripped when it crashed into a railway bridge. Six people were injured.[16]
- On 27 February 2008, a woman was dragged by a northbound route 328 near High Street Kensington tube station, killing her.[17]
- On 20 May 2008, a number 188 hit a tree on Tower Bridge Road. One person was killed and nineteen injured.[18][19]
2009
[edit]- On 5 January 2009, a bus operating on route 23 crashed into an antique shop on Westbourne Grove when it swerved to avoid a van. Ten people were injured.[20]
- On 15 January 2009, four people were injured when a bus crashed in Walthamstow.[21][22]
- On 5 June 2009, a bus on route 412 hit a railway bridge.[23]
- On 15 September 2009, route 243 and 149 collided. Both buses were operated by Arriva London at the time. Six people were injured.[25][26]
- On 6 October 2009, a route 119 double decker bus collided with another vehicle.[30]
- On 16 December 2009, a C3 bus collided with a lorry carrying rail tracks in Battersea. The bus crashed on its side, injuring several passengers and the driver.[31][32][33]
2010
[edit]- On 24 February 2010, route 141 hit railings near the entrance of Bank–Monument station. Eleven people injured.[35]
- On 24 August 2010, a route 9 bus crashed into metal railings outside Piccadilly Circus tube station.[36]

2012
[edit]- On 8 January 2012, a route 28 bus crashed into the entrance of a supermarket on Garratt Lane.[39]
- On 14 May 2012, a 76 bus on Tottenham High Road was involved in a crash.[40]
- On 5 July 2012, a man was hit by a bus operating on route 10 in Euston. London Buses route 73 was also involved in the accident.[41][42][43][44][45]
- On 14 September 2012, route 94 crashed into a building on Regent Street.[47]
- On 27 September 2012, route 14 crashed on Piccadilly. One person was injured.[48]
2013
[edit]- On 23 September 2013, buses on route 11, 360 and 452 were involved in a collision on Chelsea Bridge Road. Twelve people had minor injuries and three were seriously injured.[49][50][51][52][53] The bus driver of the route 11 bus was cleared by a court of driving without due care and attention.[54][55][56][57][58][59][60][61]
- On 30 October 2013, route 15 crashed into bollards near Cannon Street station. Six people were injured.[62]
- On 12 November 2013, a cyclist in Croydon was killed after a collision with a bus on route 410.[63][64]
- On 13 November 2013, a cyclist on Whitechapel High Street was killed after a collision with a bus on route 205.[65]
- On 15 November 2013, two pedestrians in their 60s were killed when a number 252 bus collided with them on Western Road in Romford. The driver was arrested for dangerous driving.[66][67][68] The driver was jailed the following year and was disqualified from driving for three years.[69][70][71]
- On 20 December 2013, thirty-two people were injured when a number 59 bus hit a tree on Kennington Road.[72][73][74][75][76][77][78]
- On 23 December 2013, an out-of-service bus on route 131 in Norbiton crashed into a railway bridge.[79][80][81][82]

- On 28 February 2014, a bus on route U7 collided with a man in Uxbridge High Street.[86]
- On 4 March 2014, a fire broke out on route 243 outside London Waterloo station.[87][88]

- On 22 March 2014, a woman was hit by a bus on route 71 near Cromwell Road bus station in Kingston town centre.[92][93] The woman died a few days later.[94]
- On 22 March 2014, a collision involving a bus on route 156 and two cars left one man critically injured.[95]
- On 27 March 2014, a bus on route K3 hit a car carrying an elderly woman.[96]
- On 28 March 2014, a bus on route 85 crashed into a block of flats near Putney Bridge tube station.[97][98]
