From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Workshifting refers to the ability of an employee of a company to work from outside of the office, maintaining Location Independence. Locations where an employee who is workshifting might work from can include, but not be limited to: their home, coffee shops, hotels, airports, airplanes, libraries, or any other location where an employee is able to accomplish their work without being at their place of work.

To provide the ability for workshifting to occur, either the employee or the employer will typically invest in equipment that can include: a laptop, WiFi card, smartphone (iPhone, BlackBerry, Droid or other mobile device capable of accessing email), and other tools that enable the employee to complete their workload and stay connected with colleagues and other business associates. These people are often already Digital Nomads. Many workshifters have sought out coworking, as a means to provide the perks of an office (supplies, community, and tools), without the upkeep of having a permanent office.

The term “workshifting” was originally coined by Citrix Online, a subsidiary of Citrix Systems, in March 2009. The term was created as an updated definition to several other terms including “telecommuting” and “remote working”, that referred to the ability of being part of a distributed workforce, working from outside of the office and shifting one's work habits to achieve a better work-life balance.
