This is the user page for Tanner Johnson. I am a student at the Berklee College of Music.

My musical background and outlook:

I began studying the violin at the age of five and have been struggling to play the instrument ever since. I was trained classically for most of my life, although my career as a classical musician was unfortunately not a successful one. When I was fifteen, I was given the opportunity to play with a jazz pianist in a public park in Portland, Oregon. The performance turned out to be a success, and I have been pursuing contemporary styles and improvisation ever since. I have found a new enthusiasm for improvising, and I’m excited to see where my studies in jazz take me at Berklee. I hope to pursue a career as a freelance violinist and arranger/composer.

My music:

The music I play usually involves ‘full band’ instrumentation (bass, drums, guitar, keyboard). This instrumentation somewhat limits my choice of genres to play in, which typically include elements of rock, pop, jazz and soul (among others). As an arranger and a violinist, I often find myself writing string arrangements for singer-songwriters, which calls upon my classical background. The ability to readily provide that classical sound is one of the things that distinguishes my sound from others in the same genre. I hope to use my music to accurately depict who I am as an artist and as a person, bringing my upbringing, convictions and testimony to the forefront of my music. I can only hope that this will somehow make me stand out among the multitude of cheap artists who are doing the same.
