Fairy Tail[edit]

The protagonists of the series are members of the guild Fairy Tail (妖精の尻尾, Fearī Teiru), with Natsu Dragneel and his closest friends – Lucy Heartfilia, Happy, Gray Fullbuster, and Erza Scarlet – comprising what their fellow members regard to be the guild's most powerful team due to their high power and teamwork;[ch. 69] Wendy Marvell and Carla are later considered to be members of this team as well.[citation needed]

Natsu Dragneel[edit]

Natsu Dragneel (ナツ・ドラグニル, Natsu Doraguniru) is the main male protagonist of the series. He is raised from a young age by the dragon Igneel to become a Dragon Slayer (滅竜魔導士, Doragon Sureiyā), a wizard with dragon-like physiology whose powers are designed to combat dragons. Using Fire Dragon Slayer Magic (火の滅竜魔法, Hi no Metsurū Mahō), Natsu is immune to flames and capable of consuming them to fuel his attacks, which include breathing fire and igniting any part of his body for use when striking; however, he suffers from motion sickness when he is in a vehicle of any sort, a weakness developed by many Dragon Slayers.[ch. 1] After noting Igneel's disappearance on the date of July 7, X777, seven years before the series' present, Natsu searches for the dragon and is subsequently inducted into Fairy Tail, gaining infamy as one of the guild's most destructive members known as "Salamander" (火竜, Saramandā).[ch. 2] Later in the series, Natsu is revealed to be the younger brother of the dark wizard Zeref, who converted him into the demon "Etherious Natsu Dragneel" (E.N.D.) and sent him four-hundred years from the past in a plan to kill both himself and the evil dragon Acnologia.[ch. 465] Natsu is voiced by Tetsuya Kakihara in Japanese and Todd Haberkorn in English.[1][2]

Lucy Heartfilia[edit]

Lucy Heartfilia (ルーシィ・ハートフィリア, Rūshii Hātofiria) is the series' main female protagonist. She is the debutante of the wealthy Heartfilia family who runs away from home to pursue her dream of joining the Fairy Tail guild, which she achieves after Natsu rescues her from a slave trader posing as a Fairy Tail member under his own moniker of "Salamander".[ch. 1] She performs paid guild missions together with Natsu and Happy to fund her rented house in Magnolia,[ch. 4] and is often exasperated when her teammates inadvertently reduce their reward due to their destructive antics.[ch. 70] She is also an aspiring novelist who publishes her debut novel based on her experiences at the guild in the series epilogue.[ch. 9, 545] As a celestial wizard (星霊魔導士, seirei madōshi), she uses magical keys that summon celestial spirits, gradually possessing ten out of twelve rare golden keys that summon the powerful zodiac spirits. She is also proficient in battling alongside her spirits with a whip,[ch. 115] and later gains the ability to don magical Star Dresses (星霊衣, Sutā Doresu) that give her direct access to her zodiac spirits' powers.[ch. 422] Lucy is voiced by Aya Hirano in Japanese and Cherami Leigh in English.[1][2]

Happy[edit]

Happy (ハッピー, Happī) is a 6-year-old anthropomorphic cat with blue fur who is Natsu Dragneel's best friend and sole traveling companion at the start of the series.[ch. 1] He possesses a magic ability called Aera (, Ēra) that transforms him into a winged cat and fly at great speeds.[ch. 1, 17] He uses this form to carry Natsu in the air, and is the only one Natsu is able to ride without succumbing to motion sickness.[ch. 3] He is hatched from an egg found by Natsu and Lisanna Strauss, who name him "Happy" after his birth quells an argument the rest of the guild were having.[vol. 15:omake] Later in the series, Happy discovers his origins as an Exceed from Edolas,[ch. 178] where he was separated from his parents Lucky (ラッキー, Rakkī) and Marl (マール, Māru) before birth as part of their queen's plan to evacuate 100 Exceed children to Earth-land due to their kingdom's impending destruction.[ch. 177, 198] Happy is voiced by Rie Kugimiya in Japanese and Tia Ballard in English.[1][2]

Gray Fullbuster[edit]

Gray Fullbuster (グレイ・フルバスター, Gurei Furubasutā) is an ice wizard who has a competitive relationship with Natsu because of their conflicting personalities and magical elements.[ch. 10] He uses the magic Ice Make (氷の造形魔法, Aisu Meiku), which instantly produces ice in the shape of any weapon or object he imagines.[ch. 21] Due to his training to withstand cold temperatures, he has the habit of subconsciously stripping his clothes.[ch. 36] Gray is the target of Juvia Lockser's affections throughout much of the series, which he eventually reciprocates after initially resisting her advances.[ch. 545]

In his past, an eight-year-old Gray is orphaned by the Etherious Deliora (デリオラ, Deriora) and learns magic from Ur to take revenge. After Ur sacrifices herself to save Gray's life when he recklessly attempts to kill Deliora, he accepts the blame for her death and joins Fairy Tail.[ch. 36-38] During Fairy Tail's battle with Tartaros, Gray becomes a Demon Slayer (滅悪魔導士, Debiru Sureiyā, lit. "Devil Slayer") by inheriting Ice Demon Slayer Magic (氷の滅悪魔法, Kōri no Metsuaku Mahō) from his reanimated father, Silver, to carry out Silver's will to destroy E.N.D., Tartaros's master.[ch. 394] In the war with the Alvarez Empire, Gray succumbs to his demonic power's corruptive influence and irrationally attacks Natsu after discovering his identity as E.N.D.[ch. 498-500, 504] He later returns to his senses and reconciles with Natsu, whom he helps Lucy rid of his identity as an Etherious so he may live normally as a human.[ch. 523, 538]

Mashima modeled Gray's tendency to strip after a personal habit of his own.[3] Mashima conceived an idea for the character to become an Ice Dragon Slayer at the start of Fairy Tail's development, but rejected it around Gajeel Redfox's introduction. The decision to make him into a Demon Slayer came shortly before writing the Grand Magic Games after Mashima recalled his original idea during Gray's battle with Ultear Milkovich.[vol. 46:177] Gray is voiced by Yuichi Nakamura in Japanese and Newton Pittman in English.[1][2]

Erza Scarlet[edit]

Erza Scarlet (エルザ・スカーレット, Eruza Sukāretto) is an S-Class Fairy Tail member who is nicknamed "Titania" (妖精女王, Titānia) as the guild's most powerful female wizard, capable of tremendous feats of strength.[ch. 10] She uses magic called "The Knight" (騎士, Za Naito) to instantaneously requip (換装, kansō)—exchange and equip—various weapons and armors that possess different defensive and offensive properties.[ch. 14]

Abandoned at infancy by her mother, Irene Belserion,[ch. 519] Erza is enslaved at the Tower of Heaven at age 11, eight years before the series' present. Among those she befriends at the tower is Jellal Fernandes,[ch. 77] who gives her the surname "Scarlet" after her red hair.[ch. 163] She first activates her magic power while leading a revolt to save Jellal from solitary confinement, but finds him brainwashed by Ultear Milkovich into becoming a devotee of Zeref, and is forced out of the tower alone when he betrays her.[ch. 80-82] Her experiences lead her to join Fairy Tail and become a strict disciplinarian with no tolerance for her guildmates' foolish behavior,[ch. 10] but she gradually opens up to her friends over the course of their adventures.[ch. 91, 104] In the process, she forgives Jellal when he regrets his actions, and grows closer to him while supporting his efforts to atone. Following Fairy Tail's one-year disbandment, Erza temporarily serves as the guild's seventh master in Makarov Dreyar's absence.[ch. 438]

Mashima developed Erza to be a female character whom Natsu could fear, initially giving her a "wild" look before settling on the image of a knight.[4] Her character and personality were influenced by Mummy, a character from the manga series Monster Soul that Mashima released between Rave Master and Fairy Tail.[citation needed] The name "Erza" is derived from Eru, the heroine of the short story "Fairy Tale" written by Mashima as a pilot for the series.[vol. 2:190] Her moniker and its associated kanji reference Titania, the Fairy Queen character from A Midsummer Night's Dream.[vol. 3:192] Erza is voiced by Sayaka Ohara in Japanese and Colleen Clinkenbeard in English.[5][2]

Wendy Marvell[edit]

Wendy Marvell (ウェンディ・マーベル, Wendi Māberu) is a young Dragon Slayer adopted and trained by the dragon Grandeeney (グランディーネ, Gurandīne). Renowned as the "Sky Dragon" (天竜, Tenryū) and "Priestess of the Sky" (天空の巫女, Tenkū no Miko),[ch. 135] Wendy performs Sky Dragon Slayer Magic (天空の滅竜魔法, Tenkū no Metsuryū Mahō) that draws power from clean air to heal most injuries and ailments,[ch. 135] and temporarily relieves her fellow Dragon Slayers' motion sickness.[ch. 144] Like Natsu and the other Dragon Slayers raised by dragons, she comes from 400 years in the past and arrives in the present era at age five on July 7, X777, seven years before the series' present.

At some point after Grandeeney's disappearance, the five-year-old Wendy travels Earth-land with Mystogan until he leaves her in the care of the elderly spirit Robaul (ローバウル, Rōbauru), who creates the illusory guild Cait Shelter (化猫の宿, Ketto Sherutā) to care for her. Seven years later, Wendy represents her guild in an alliance with Fairy Tail, Blue Pegasus, and Lamia Scale against the dark guild Oración Seis.[ch. 132] After bonding with Fairy Tail, Wendy learns of her guild's true nature as an illusion, and is left to join Fairy Tail after her old guild vanishes.[ch. 164] Wendy comes to admire Natsu as an older brother figure,[ch. 423] inspiring her to use her magic's combative functions, which include manipulating wind and augmenting the strength, speed, and defense of herself and her allies through enchantment.[ch. 376]

Wendy is voiced by Satomi Satō in Japanese and Brittney Karbowski in English.[6][7]

Carla[edit]

Carla is a white-furred, high-strung female Exceed who acts as Wendy Marvell's partner and guardian.[ch. 133, 145] Her name in Japanese is Charles (シャルル, Sharuru), spelled "Charle" in Funimation subtitles, which was changed to "Carla" in various countries where readers would interpret "Charles" as a male name.[vol. 27:184] In addition to the magic Aera, Carla is born with the power of precognition inherited from her mother, the Exceed queen Chagot (シャゴット, Shagotto).

Carla is voiced by Yui Horie in Japanese and Jad Saxton in English.[6][7]

Guild masters[edit]

Makarov Dreyar[edit]

Makarov Dreyar (マカロフ・ドレアー, Makarofu Doreā) is the third and incumbent master of the Fairy Tail guild throughout the series, depicted as a diminutive old man who is often frustrated by his guild members' belligerence, but looks upon them as his own children.[ch. 2, 50] He is registered as one of the Ten Wizard Saints (聖十大魔導, Seiten Daimadō), the most powerful and skillful wizards on the continent of Ishgal as deemed by the Magic Council,[ch. 47] with knowledge of numerous forms of magic such as the size-increasing magic Giant (巨人, Jaianto) and Fairy Law.[ch. 28, 66] A recurring joke in the series is Makarov's inability to secure a permanent successor,[8] resulting in him holding the position of sixth and eighth guild master after Gildarts Clive and Erza Scarlet, respectively.[ch. 259, 448] He eventually sacrifices his life using Fairy Law to annihilate the Alvarez Empire's army, but is resurrected by Mavis Vermillion upon her own death, limiting the use of his legs.[ch. 537, 545]

Makarov is voiced by Shinpachi Tsuji in Japanese and R. Bruce Elliott in English.[1][2] Mashima came up with Makarov's name because he wanted it to sound Russian.[vol. 2] The author originally planned to kill the character off on Sirius Island, but changed his mind after befriending Tsuji.[8] Mashima considered Makarov's death in the final arc to be permanent until he drew Mavis and Zeref's last moments, wishing to give their deaths more meaning, and rationalizing that his resurrection would relieve the guild.[vol. 62]

Precht Gaebolg[edit]

Precht Gaebolg (プレヒト・ゲイボルグ, Purehito Geiborugu) is Fairy Tail's second master and one of Fairy Tail's co-founders, introduced as the master of the dark guild Grimoire Heart under the alias "Hades" (ハデス, Hadesu).[ch. 215] He is depicted as a master of multiple powerful spells, such as Grimoire Chain (悪魔の束縛, Gurimoa Chein),[9] which produces chains from his hands with which to grapple and throw opponents;[ch. 216] Grimoire Law (悪魔の法律, Gurimoa Rō), a dark version of Fairy Law;[ch. 214] and the Devil's Eye (悪魔の眼, Akuma no Me), an artificial eye beneath his eyepatch that gives him access to greater power when opened.[ch. 247]

Precht first becomes engrossed in black magic when he inadvertently produces Fairy Heart in his attempts to reverse Mavis Vermillion's death-like state,[ch. 451] which spurs him to leave Fairy Tail under Makarov Dreyar's leadership to uncover the source of all magic power.[ch. 215] After tracing the source to Zeref, Precht renames himself Hades and organizes Grimoire Heart out of obsession with obtaining this singularity from him, committing atrocities to obtain rumored "keys" to awakening Zeref's dormant power.[ch. 216, 249] Using his knowledge of Fairy Heart,[vol. 53:189] he constructs a mechanical "heart" on board his guild's airship that grants him unlimited magic power and stamina until the heart is destroyed by Happy and Carla.[ch. 248] He is spared by Makarov upon his defeat by Natsu's team, only to be killed by Zeref in condemnation of his actions.[ch. 250]

Mashima based the name Precht on that of a literary scholar,[vol. 27:184] while his surname comes from the spear Gáe Bolg.[vol. 53:194] In Japanese, Precht is voiced by Masashi Hirose until his retirement in 2014, and by Yutaka Aoyama in subsequent appearances such as the 2020 video game.[10] His English voice actor is John Swasey. In the character's youth, he is voiced by Yoshihisa Kawahara [ja] in Japanese and Dave Trosko in English.

Mavis Vermillion[edit]

Mavis Vermillion (メイビス・ヴァーミリオン, Meibisu Vāmirion) is the childlike first master of Fairy Tail,[ch. 203] nicknamed the "Fairy Strategist" (妖精軍師, Yōsei Gunshi) as a prodigy with vast military and illusory skill,[ch. 255] which she hides behind a facade of immaturity.[11] Initially stated to be dead and buried on Sirius Island,[ch. 203] Mavis interacts with the guild as an astral projection that can only be seen and heard by those marked with Fairy Tail's emblem.[ch. 268] She is later revealed to have remained alive for over 98 years under the Black Magic of Ankhselam, a curse of immortality shared with Zeref that halted her outward physical maturity at age thirteen, but has retained her internal physiology as an adult woman.[ch. 526]

Her backstory is explored in the prequel manga Fairy Tail Zero and several chapters of the main manga. Born on Sirius Island, Mavis is raised by a cruel guild master who takes her shoes away,[12] making her habitually barefoot.[13] While traveling with her future guild co-founders,[12] Mavis befriends a wandering Zeref, who teaches her a forbidden prototype of Fairy Law that she casts to save her friends' lives,[14] unknowingly afflicting herself with Zeref's curse.[ch. 449] Her curse manifests ten years later by killing Makarov Dreyar's mother shortly upon his birth, leading Mavis to exile herself. Empathizing with each other over their mutual curse, Mavis and Zeref fall in love the following year; however, despite a brief period of sexual intimacy,[ch. 526] Mavis does not fully trust Zeref's love for her, causing his curse to send her into a death-like state.[ch. 450, 537] Precht seals her body in a lacrima crystal beneath Fairy Tail's guildhall while attempting to revive her, which produces Fairy Heart.[ch. 451]

In the final story arc, after reviving herself by having Cana Alberona destroy her projected self,[ch. 489] Mavis lifts her and Zeref's curses by accepting their mutual love, which enables both of their deaths.[ch. 537] In the series epilogue, a girl who shares Mavis's appearance named Mio (ミオ) surfaces and encounters a young man named Alios, who resembles Zeref.[ch. 545] In 100 Years Quest, Natsu Dragneel encounters Mavis's spirit during a near-death experience, where she and Zeref have married and live happily in Natsu's personal afterlife with their deceased children: August, a biological son whom they conceived during their first intimate moment,[ch. 526] and Larcade, an Etherious created and adopted by Zeref.

Mavis's background was included in the very first concepts of the series.[vol. 31:195] Mashima initially envisioned Mavis as an elderly male character, which he changed after being informed that "Mavis" was a female name, designing her as a young girl to "surprise" readers with her introduction.[15] He also expanded the character's involvement in the story because of her "immense popularity", remarking that he had "no idea" she would become so popular.[vol. 32:191] Mashima noted that many readers were surprised by Mavis's relationship with Zeref, which he had decided on "quite a long time ago" before revealing it.[vol. 53:189] The author intended to draw a detailed kissing scene between the two characters, but amidst concerns regarding Mavis's appearance, he decided that depicting the scene in a silhouette would be "more beautiful and effective".[vol. 53:189] Mavis is voiced by Mamiko Noto in Japanese and Leah Clark in English.[16]

S-Class wizards[edit]

Fairy Tail's S-Class wizards (S級魔導士, Esu-kyū madōshi) are the guild's highest-ranking members who are recognized by the master for their strength, skill, and conviction.[ch. 201] Erza Scarlet, one of the protagonists, holds the S-Class rank at the start of the series.[ch. 24] Mashima has stated that the "S" stands for words such as "super", "special", or the Japanese phrase "Soreya yabai zo!!" (それやヤバイぞ!!, "That's gotta be dangerous!!").[vol. 4:189]

Mirajane Strauss[edit]

Mirajane Strauss (ミラジェーン・ストラウス, Mirajēn Sutorausu) is Elfman and Lisanna Strauss's older sister, who works as the guild's administrator and barmaid, and as a pin-up girl for the fictional Weekly Sorcerer magazine.[ch. 1, 2] She has a cheerful personality with an airheaded facade,[ch. 25] contrasting with her fierce, bullying demeanor during her childhood.[ch. 52] Besides Transformation Magic (変身魔法, Henshin Mahō) that changes her appearance,[ch. 2, 28] Mirajane uses the magic Takeover: Satan Soul (接収 サタンソウル, Teikuōbā: Satan Sōru) to absorb the forms and destructive abilities of demons, for which she is infamous as the "Demon-Woman" (魔人, Majin).[ch. 117] Her Takeover ability is initially stunted by her trauma over Lisanna's supposed death, leading to her retirement from active guild work,[ch. 52, 55] but she regains her full power to defend Elfman during the Battle of Fairy Tail.[ch. 117]

Mashima based the character's name after the username of a friend he met in an online game.[vol. 2:190] Her pre-guild backstory – which depicts Mirajane's siblings helping her accept her Satan Soul after they are shunned in their hometown for her magic – was planned by Mashima "a very long time" before he included it in the story, saying that "the chance to tell it just never seemed right", and that he was happy when the opportunity arose.[vol. 45:189] Mirajane is voiced by Ryōko Ono in Japanese and Monica Rial in English.[1][2]

Mystogan[edit]

Mystogan (ミストガン, Misutogan) is a masked figure who hails from the parallel universe Edolas as Jellal Fernandes's counterpart, himself also named Jellal.[ch. 167] Unable to use magic on his own, Mystogan wields staves infused with magic power to create illusions and draw magic circles for spellcasting.[ch. 120] To hide his identity, he casts sleeping spells on his guildmates whenever he visits.[ch. 24] He travels Earth-land to close inter-dimensional Anima portals used by Faust, his corrupt father and Edolas's king, to steal magic energy from Earth-land and convert it into lacrima crystals; he briefly travels with an orphaned Wendy Marvell during his childhood before leaving her with the spirit Robaul.[ch. 145, 164] After helping Fairy Tail restore Magnolia when the city is absorbed by Anima,[ch. 168, 189] Mystogan permanently reverses the portals' effects to prevent their misuse. He subsequently retires from the guild to replace Faust as king, gaining the public's support in a mock battle with Natsu Dragneel, who assumes responsibility for the loss of Edolas's magic.[ch. 195-197] Mystogan appears in 100 Years Quest when Natsu's team is briefly sent back to Edolas by Faris, and later fathers a reincarnated Irene Belserion with Erza Knightwalker. Mystogan is voiced by Daisuke Namikawa in Japanese and Robert McCollum in English.[17][2]

Laxus Dreyar[edit]

Laxus Dreyar (ラクサス・ドレアー, Rakusasu Doreā)

Laxus is voiced by Katsuyuki Konishi in Japanese,[2] and by Patrick Seitz in English.[2]

Gildarts Clive[edit]

Gildarts Clive (ギルダーツ・クライヴ, Girudātsu Kuraivu) is an S-Class wizard who is regarded by Fairy Tail to be their most powerful member.[ch. 106] He can break any object or spell he touches down into blocks using the magic Crush (クラッシュ, Kurasshu), which requires Magnolia's streets to reconfigure into a single, narrow path towards the guild to prevent him from stumbling into buildings by mistake.[ch. 166] Because he embarks on missions that have never been completed for up to a century,[ch. 165] he visits the guild on rare occasions for short periods of time.[ch. 232] During one such failed mission, Gildarts loses his left limbs and several internal organs after being mauled by Acnologia.[ch. 166] On Sirius Island, Gildarts learns he is the father of Cana Alberona,[ch. 232] to whom his deceased ex-wife gave birth after divorcing him while he was on a six-year mission.[ch. 251] After returning from the island, Makarov elects him as the guild's fifth master to replace Macao Conbolt, but Gildarts immediately resigns to leave on another journey.[ch. 258, 259] He returns one year later to participate in the war against the Alvarez Empire,[ch. 495] remaining at the guild in the series epilogue.[ch. 545]

Mashima described the character as "a dumb-looking old guy", and considered his first appearance to be "a really big event" within the story.[vol. 20:188] Gildarts is voiced by Kazuhiko Inoue in Japanese and Jason Douglas in English.

Other members[edit]

Cana Alberona[edit]

Cana Alberona (カナ・アルベローナ, Kana Aruberōna), whose name is derived from the tarot term "arcana",[vol. 2:190] is a young alcoholic woman who drinks entire barrels of liquor at a time.[ch. 2] She uses Magic Cards (魔法の札, Majikku Kādo) either as projectile weapons or to perform a variety of spells, including fortune-telling.[ch. 38, 51] During her S-Class promotional exam on Sirius Island, Cana is revealed to be Gildarts Clive's unknown daughter, who has struggled to reveal her identity to him for twelve years due to his seldom appearances and her growing lack of confidence after failing four previous consecutive exams.[ch. 232] After her desperation leads her to abandon her guildmates during Grimoire Heart's attack,[ch. 202, 225] Cana realizes her error and reveals herself to Gildarts following the exam's cancellation.[ch. 232, 251] Later throughout the series, Cana demonstrates a proficiency at using the Fairy Glitter spell occasionally provided to her by Mavis Vermillion.[ch. 285] Cana is voiced by Eri Kitamura in Japanese and Jamie Marchi in English.[1][2]

Loke[edit]

Loke (ロキ, Roki) is the pseudonym of Leo (レオ, Reo), a humanoid zodiac Celestial Spirit and playboy who is regarded as a popular bachelor in the wizard community.[ch. 2, 72] He uses Finger Ring Magic (指輪魔法, Yubiwa Mahō) to cast light-based spells with his ring, Regulus (王の光, Regurusu).[ch. 73, 115] Upon introduction, Loke has been banished from his world for three years following the death of his owner, Karen Lilica, who was murdered by Sorano Agria on a mission after Loke defiantly remained in the human world to protect his fellow spirit Aries from Karen's abuse, preventing Karen from summoning her other spirits. When his exile leaves him on the verge of dying, Lucy Heartfilia and her spirits convince the Celestial Spirit King to overturn his exile and save his life.[ch. 71-74] Loke subsequently serves as one of Lucy's contracted spirits, openly expressing romantic feelings for her after avoiding her out of guilt for Karen's death.[ch. 10, 114]

Mashima derived the name "Loke" from the Norse god Loki,[vol. 2:190] Loke is voiced by Daisuke Kishio in Japanese,[1] and by Eric Vale in English.[2]

Elfman Strauss[edit]

Elfman Strauss (エルフマン・ストラウス, Erufuman Sutorausu) is Mirajane and Lisanna Strauss's middle brother, a muscle-brained wizard who spouts nonsensical speeches about manhood, but is also kind and emotionally sensitive.[ch. 2, 51] His magic, Takeover: Beast Soul (接収 獣王の魂, Teikuōbā: Bīsuto Sōru), assimilates the powers and forms of monsters. At the start of the series, his magic is limited to the ability Beast Arm (ビーストアーム, Bīsuto Āmu), which only affects his right arm, compounded by his guilt for seemingly killing Lisanna in a mindless rampage during an attempted full-body transformation two years earlier. He employs his full strength more frequently after gaining complete control over his Beast Soul form to rescue Mirajane from Phantom Lord.[ch. 54-56] Mashima chose the name "Elfman" for the character because he wanted it to sound "somewhat cute".[vol. 2:190] Elfman is voiced by Hiroki Yasumoto in Japanese,[1] and by Christopher Sabat in English.[2]

Lisanna Strauss[edit]

Lisanna Strauss (リサーナ・ストラウス, Risāna Sutorausu) is Mirajane and Elfman Strauss's younger sister, whose Takeover: Animal Soul (接収 動物の魂, Teikuōbā: Animaru Sōru) allows her to shapeshift into animals. Lisanna is initially established to have been killed by Elfman in an accident with his berserk full-body Takeover form,[ch. 55] and is further developed as Natsu Dragneel's childhood friend who helped him hatch Happy's egg.[vol. 15:omake] She later reappears alive as a Fairy Tail member in the parallel world Edolas, having been transported there through an Anima portal upon her supposed death, and quietly assuming the role of her own deceased counterpart. She returns to Earth-land after Mystogan reverses the portals' effects, reuniting her with her siblings and guildmates.[ch. 199]

Mashima conceived the character's name because he felt the suffix "-anna" made it sound cute.[vol. 27:184] At a convention in France 2018, Mashima said he brought Lisanna back with the intent to deepen her relationship with Natsu, envisioning a love triangle between them and Lucy Heartfilia, but decided against it due to concerns of negative fan reactions. He added, "Personally, I think Lisanna is a nice girl, and it would be a shame to see her with a guy like Natsu," determining that Natsu and Lucy were more suitable together.[18] Lisanna is voiced by Harumi Sakurai in Japanese,[19] and by Carrie Savage in English.[20]

Levy McGarden[edit]

Levy McGarden (レビィ・マクガーデン, Rebi Makugāden) is a member of Shadow Gear (シャドウ・ギア, Shadō Gia), a three-wizard team that also includes Jet and Droy. Using the magic Solid Script (立体文字, Soriddo Sukuriputo), she transforms written words into three-dimensional objects that take on the attributes of whatever is written. She is also proficient at translating and decoding ancient languages and runic magic. She becomes one of Lucy Heartfilia's friends over their shared love of books, encouraging Lucy to let her be the first to read her novel.[ch. 48]

Levy and her team are brutally crucified by Gajeel Redfox during his membership in Phantom Lord, leading to a war between their guilds.[ch. 47] She initially avoids Gajeel when he joins Fairy Tail, but reconsiders after he defends her from a disgruntled Laxus Dreyar.[ch. 105] She subsequently develops romantic feelings for Gajeel,[ch. 202] with the two becoming temporary officers of the Magic Council's custody and arrest unit during Fairy Tail's one-year dissolution, and later committing themselves to each other while battling the Alvarez Empire. In the series epilogue, Levy is overheard by Lucy and Wendy Marvell telling Gajeel that she is pregnant.[ch. 545]

Mashima designed Levy to be a background character in the series, but grew to "really [like] her".[vol. 27:184] He subsequently expanded her role in response to her rise in popularity, which defied his expectations.[vol. 32:191] Levy is voiced by Mariya Ise in Japanese and Kristi Kang in English.[1][2]

Gajeel Redfox[edit]

Gajeel Redfox (ガジル・レッドフォックス, Gajiru Reddofokkusu), nicknamed "Kurogane" Gajeel (鉄竜のガジル, Kurogane no Gajiru, lit. "Black Steel", written as "Iron Dragon"), is a Dragon Slayer whose Iron Dragon Slayer Magic (鉄の滅竜魔法, Tetsu no Metsuryū Mahō) allows him to transform his limbs into iron weapons, cover his skin with iron scales, breathe gusts of wind containing metal shrapnel, and consume iron objects for nourishment.[ch. 61] He also learns to use Rogue Cheney's shadow magic after consuming it in the Grand Magic Games, allowing him to enter Iron-Shadow Dragon Mode (モード鉄影竜, Mōdo Tetsueiryū). Gajeel is later revealed to be one of five children sent 400 years from the past through Eclipse by their dragon foster parents to kill Acnologia,[ch. 465] although the process leads him to forget most of his childhood besides being raised by his own dragon, Metalicana (メタリカーナ, Metarikāna), whom he resents for his disappearance.[ch. 66, 510]

Debuting as a delinquent member of Phantom Lord, Gajeel defaces Fairy Tail's guildhall and assaults Levy McGarden's team to instigate a war between the two guilds.[ch. 48] After Phantom Lord's dissolution, he reluctantly accepts Makarov Dreyar's offer of membership into Fairy Tail to atone for his actions,[ch. 212] earning the guild's trust and acceptance after helping Natsu Dragneel defeat Laxus Dreyar in the Battle of Fairy Tail.[ch. 126] Gajeel subsequently develops protective feelings for Levy,[ch. 210] becoming captain of the Magic Council's custody and arrest unit with Levy as his subordinate after Fairy Tail temporarily disbands, and eventually confessing his love for her when he is nearly killed during the war with the Alvarez Empire. In the series epilogue, Gajeel has a conversation with Levy about a baby.[ch. 545]

The character was the first of several Dragon Slayers besides Natsu to be introduced in the series, an idea Mashima considered upon creating the "Dragon Slayer" concept, intending him to be an "extremely scary" rival for Natsu.[vol. 8:190] His name is derived from the word kajiru (噛る, "to gnaw") and the onomatopoeia for eating, gaji-gaji (ガジガジ).[vol. 27:184] Similar to Natsu, Gajeel's age is listed as "unknown",[ch. 105] which became a subject of questions from readers following a scene where he and Natsu are caught in a runic trap designed to contain those over 80 years old, to which Mashima asserted that this was not their actual age.[vol. 15:188] Gajeel's backstory with Magic Council member Belno was a "simplified" version of what Mashima had initially planned, with the author's original intent being that Belno would be Gajeel's catalyst for joining Fairy Tail before changing it to Makarov.[vol. 47:185] Gajeel is voiced by Wataru Hatano in Japanese and David Wald in English.[21][20]

Juvia Lockser[edit]

Juvia Lockser (ジュビア・ロクサー, Jubia Rokusā)

Juvia is voiced by Mai Nakahara in Japanese;[21] in the English dub, her name is Juvia Loxar and she is voiced by Brina Palencia.[20]

  • Fried Justine (フリード・ジャスティーン, Furīdo Jasutīn, also "Freed"), nicknamed "Fried the Dark" (暗黒のフリード, Ankoku no Furīdo)

Fried is voiced by Junichi Suwabe in Japanese and John Burgmeier in English.[22][23]

  • Bickslow (ビックスロー, Bikkusurō)

  • Evergreen (エバーグリーン, Ebāgurīn)

Evergreen is voiced by Saori Seto in Japanese and Caitlin Glass in English.[22][23]

Panther Lily[edit]

Panther Lily (パンサーリリー, Pansā Rirī) – spelled "Pantherlily" in the English anime – is a black-furred Exceed born in the parallel world of Edolas.[ch. 181] Introduced as the commander of the Edolas Kingdom's First Magical Warfare Division,[ch. 171] he battles Gajeel Redfox while supporting the kingdom's extermination of the other Exceed, who had previously banished him for bringing an injured human, Mystogan, to their home of Extalia for medical treatment.[ch. 187, 189] However, Lily reforms after witnessing his people's determination to protect their homeland.[ch. 189] He is subsequently sent through a reversed Anima portal to Earth-land, where he joins Fairy Tail as Gajeel's partner.[ch. 198] Lily has a larger, more muscular body than ordinary Exceed, but is reduced to a smaller size and can only access his original form for short periods of time when in Earth-land.[ch. 199, 201] He wields the magic sword Buster Marm (バスターマァム, Basutā Māmu),[ch. 186] which extends up to four times his own height;[vol. 22:190-191] after its destruction, he replaces it with the similar Musica Sword (ムジカの剣, Mujika no Ken).[ch. 247]

According to Mashima, the character's name is a play on that of "a famous character from a certain fairy tale".[vol. 27:184] Lily is voiced by Hiroki Tōchi in Japanese and Rick Keeling in English.[25]

Mest Gryder[edit]

Mest Gryder (メスト・グライダー, Mesuto Guraidā) is a wizard who uses the teleportation magic Direct Line (瞬間移動, Dairekuto Rain), as well as the power of memory manipulation.[ch. 213, 215] First appearing as a candidate in Fairy Tail's S-Class qualification test,[ch. 201] he later identifies himself as intelligence officer of the Magic Council named Doranbalt (ドランバルト, Doranbaruto) – spelled "Doranbolt" in the anime dub" – who infiltrated Fairy Tail in search of incriminating evidence on Sirius Island to justify the guild's dissolution.[ch. 213] However, he is forced to ally with them against Grimoire Heart,[ch. 223] and concerns himself with their seven-year disappearance when he is forced to withdraw from Acnologia's attack without them. After he survives Tartaros's bombing of the council and aids Fairy Tail against the dark guild, Makarov reveals Mest's true identity as a legitimate Fairy Tail member who haphazardly altered his own memories to extract information on the Alvarez Empire from the council.[ch. 415, 439] Mest subsequently rejoins Fairy Tail the following year after regaining his memories.[ch. 438]

Prior to unveiling Mest's role as an undercover council agent, Mashima considered making the character a legitimate Fairy Tail member, as well as a member of Grimoire Heart or Tartaros.[vol. 24:172] Mashima later said that the reveal of Mest's legitimate membership was planned long in advance, and that he never had the opportunity to foreshadow it, receiving complaints from readers who felt the character was retconned.[vol. 49:190] Mest is voiced by Shūhei Sakaguchi in Japanese.[26] In the English dub, he is voiced by Alex Organ in the 2009 and 2014 series, and by Christopher Wehkamp in the 2018 series.

Yuri Dreyar[edit]

Yuri Dreyar (ユーリ・ドレアー, Yūri Doreā) is Makarov's deceased father and one of Fairy Tail's founding members. In Fairy Tail Zero, the teenage Yuri attempts to steal Sirius Island's sacred relic, the Sirius Orb, which brings him into conflict with Mavis. Forming a truce with her when the orb is discovered stolen by the dark guild Blue Skull, Yuri learns Lightning Magic (雷の魔法, Kaminari no Mahō) to defeat the guild and claim the treasure for himself, causing the orb's magic to fuse him with Blue Skull's skeletal dragon against his will. After Mavis sacrifices her physical maturity to rescue him with her Law spell, Yuri renounces his selfish nature and befriends her. He passes away fourteen years later – four years after Mavis's curse kills his wife, Rita, upon Makarov's birth – with Yuri oblivious to the cause of Rita's death.[ch. 451]

The character shares his name with a minor Magic Council member killed by Tartaros. Mashima stated that this was coincidental, although he briefly considered making them the same character because of it, which he realized was "impossible" due to their different designs.[vol. 48:191] Yuri is voiced by Katsuyuki Konishi in Japanese and Clifford Chapin in English.

Warrod Sequen[edit]

Warrod Sequen (ウォーロッド・シーケン, Wōroddo Shīken) is a retired Fairy Tail wizard who ranks last among the Four Emperors of Ishgal (イシュガルの四天王, Ishugaru no Shitennō), the four strongest of the Ten Wizard Saints.[ch. 341, 342] He has a tree-like appearance and a joking personality that exhausts others. He is a practitioner of Green Magic (緑の魔法, Midori no Mahō), which produces rapidly-growing trees under his control, and is capable of vegetating deserts.[ch. 342] Following the Magic Council bombing, Warrod forms a new council roster with most of the Wizard Saints besides Makarov Dreyar and God Serena. Warrod is voiced by Tesshō Genda in Japanese and Garrett Schenck in English. In the character's youth, he is voiced by Hiroshi Shirokuma in Japanese and Cris George in English.

Antagonists[edit]

Zeref Dragneel[edit]

Zeref Dragneel (ゼレフ・ドラグニル, Zerefu Doraguniru), known monomynously as Zeref the "Black Wizard" (黒魔導士, Kuro Madōshi), is Natsu Dragneel's elder brother and the central antagonist of Fairy Tail. He suffers from the Black Magic of Ankhselam (アンクセラムの黒魔術, Ankuseramu no Kuro Majutsu), a "curse of contradiction" that renders him immortal and steals life around himself whenever he cherishes the value of life.[ch. 250] In his background 400 years in the series' past, the god Ankhselam punishes Zeref with his curse for attempting to bring the infant Natsu back from his death in a childhood dragon attack,[ch. 436] leading Zeref to create numerous powerful demons called Etherious (エーテリアス, Ēteriasu) to assist in his suicide.[ch. 407] He succeeds in reviving Natsu as one such demon, dubbed "Etherious Natsu Dragneel" (E.N.D.), whom he puts under Igneel's care and sends into the present era through the time machine Eclipse (エクリプス, Ekuripusu) to properly cultivate Natsu's powers.[ch. 436, 465] While waiting for Natsu's reemergence, Zeref befriends Mavis Vermillion and eventually falls in love with her, but despairs when his curse sends her into a death-like state during a moment of sexual intimacy, which she survives due to sharing his curse.

Zeref first appears in the story proper on Sirius Island, where he is disillusioned by the numerous atrocities committed under his supposed name as a mass-murdering embodiment of evil.[ch. 209, 250] Resolving to eradicate humanity to prevent any more conflict,[ch. 340] he resurfaces eight years later as the emperor of the Alvarez Empire.[ch. 450] Zeref spearheads a large-scale invasion of Ishgal to obtain Mavis's limitless power of Fairy Heart with which to perform Neo Eclipse (ネオ・エクリプス, Neo Ekuripusu), a spell that would enable him to relive his own life and undo the actions caused by himself and Acnologia, while also erasing the present timeline.[ch. 530] Zeref succeeds in absorbing Fairy Heart after Natsu fails to kill him, attaining godlike strength, but Natsu incapacitates him after negating his attacks with his own fire magic.[ch. 532, 536] Zeref is able to die after Mavis rekindles her love for him, allowing their mutual curse to kill them both.[ch. 537] In the series' epilogue, a young man identical in appearance to Zeref named Alios (アリオス, Ariosu) appears and encounters Mio, a girl who resembles Mavis.[ch. 545] Zeref appears again as a spirit in Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest, where Natsu reconciles with him during a near death experience.

Originally an unseen character, Zeref was not given a name upon his first physical appearance in the story, with Mashima considering several possible alternatives;[vol. 24:172] he intentionally avoided providing any hints to his identity beforehand, wanting it to be a "complete surprise" to the readers.[vol. 24:167] Mashima stated that Zeref "has really become a popular character" after the reveal, also calling him a "really dark" character who would "never make a silly face."[vol. 26:187] Zeref is voiced by Akira Ishida in Japanese, and by Joel McDonald in English.

Phantom Lord[edit]

Phantom Lord (幽鬼の支配者, Fantomu Rōdo) is an official wizard guild that rivals Fairy Tail as Fiore's strongest guild. Its founder is Geoffrey (ジョフリー, Jofurī), who previously led the dark guild Blue Skull (青い髑髏, Burū Sukaru).[27] Gajeel Redfox and Juvia Lockser are introduced as Phantom Lord members, with the latter representing water in the Element 4 (エレメント4, Eremento Fō), Phantom Lord's S-Class elemental specialist team.[ch. 47, 48] The guild is hired by Jude Heartfilia to retrieve his runaway daughter, Lucy, after she joins Fairy Tail.[ch. 50] Provoking Fairy Tail into a guild war by sending Gajeel to destroy their guildhall and injure Levy McGarden's team,[ch. 47, 64] Phantom Lord is defeated by Fairy Tail and disestablished by the Magic Council.[ch. 66, 69]

  • Jose Porla (ジョゼ・ポーラ, Joze Pōra), Phantom Lord's master, is Geoffrey's descendant[27] and a Wizard Saint who creates ghostly apparitions to act as soldiers.[ch. 47, 52] He is voiced by Takashi Matsuyama in Japanese and Ed Blaylock in English.
  • Aria (アリア) is the Element 4's leader, who controls air and drains other wizards' magic.[ch. 49] He is voiced by Katsui Taira in Japanese and Chris Rager in English.
  • Sol (ソル, Soru) is the Element 4's earth-controlling member who merges his body with the ground.[ch. 48] He is voiced by Eiji Sekiguchi in Japanese and Barry Yandell in English.

Tower of Heaven[edit]

The Tower of Heaven (楽園の塔, Rakuen no Tō, lit. "Tower of Paradise"), also called the Revive System (リバイブシステム, Ribaibu Shisutemu, abbr. "R-System"), is a tower-like device designed by Zeref to resurrect his previously deceased brother, Natsu Dragneel. It is built by a cult that seeks Zeref's resurrection after his supposed death, enslaving numerous children for its construction, including Erza Scarlet, Jellal Fernandes, and the younger members of Oración Seis.[ch. 81] Jellal takes control of the operation after being brainwashed by Ultear Milkovich, aided by his and Erza's fellow slave friends—Sho, Simon, Wally, and Millianna—whom he manipulates against Erza after casting her out. The tower is destroyed following Jellal's defeat.

  • Shô (ショウ, Shō) is a young dark-skinned man who seals others inside magic cards. He is voiced by Hiro Shimono in Japanese and Greg Ayres in English.
  • Simon (シモン, Shimon) is a disfigured man and Kagura Mikazuchi's older brother who enshrouds areas in pitch darkness. He remains devoted to Erza despite Jellal's manipulations, and dies protecting her from Jellal's attack. He is voiced by Yasuyuki Kase in Japanese and J. Michael Tatum in English.
  • Wally Buchanan (ウォーリー・ブキャナン, Wōrī Bukyanan) is a gangster-styled man with an angular body that can split into blocks. He is voiced by Kazuya Ichijō in Japanese and Chris Cason in English.
  • Trinity Raven (三羽鴉, Toriniti Reivun) is a trio of assassins who serve as Jellal's minions after Erza's friends realize his deception. Mashima created Trinity Raven "at the last moment" after feeling "really sorry" for Erza's friends while writing their backstory, determining that having them defeated in battle would not resolve their conflicts.[vol. 11:190]
    • Ikaruga (斑鳩) is Trinity Raven's captain, a haiku-reciting swordswoman whose katana cuts through anything. She is voiced by Kei Shindō in Japanese and Jennifer Seman in English.
    • Vidaldus Taka (ヴィダルダス・タカ, Vidarudasu Taka) is a rock musician with liquid-absorbing hair and the ability to brainwash others through his music. He is voiced by Hikaru Midorikawa in Japanese and Mike McFarland in English.
    • Fukuro (, Fukurō) is an owl-headed wizard who copies the magic of any wizard he ingests. He is voiced by Rikiya Koyama in Japanese and Daniel Penz in English.

Raven Tail[edit]

Raven Tail (大鴉の尻尾, Reivun Teiru) is a dark guild that acts independently from the Balam Alliance,[ch. 131] and registers as an official guild shortly after Fairy Tail's return from Sirius Island.[ch. 267] It is formed by Ivan Dreyar to retaliate against Fairy Tail and acquire its greatest secret, Lumen Histoire, an act resulting in his expulsion from Fairy Tail six years earlier.[ch. 119, 286] After being defeated by Laxus in the Grand Magic Games, Raven Tail is disqualified from the tournament for repeated violations of the tournament's rules, and disbands shortly afterwards.[ch. 286, 341]

  • Ivan Dreyar (イワン・ドレアー, Iwan Doreā, also "Iwan"), Raven Tail's master, is Makarov's son and Laxus's father who magically controls paper shikigami dolls.[ch. 119] He participates in the Grand Magic Games incognito as the armored wizard Alexei (アレクセイ, Arekusei).[ch. 285] Ivan is voiced by Masaharu Satō in Japanese and Bruce Carey in English.
  • Flare Corona (フレア・コロナ, Furea Korona) is a deranged young woman with prehensile hair that she can transform and ignite.[ch. 271] After Raven Tail disbands, she settles her differences with Fairy Tail and assists them in saving the Village of the Sun (太陽の村, Taiyō no Mura), her adopted hometown populated by giants.[ch. 347] Flare is voiced by Shizuka Itō in Japanese and Alex Moore in English.
  • Obra (オーブラ, Ōbura) is an imp-like creature who puppets a larger body and drains other wizards' magic. He is also a secret informant of Zeref. Obra is voiced by Yoshimitsu Shimoyama in Japanese and Tyler Walker in English.
  • Kurohebi (クロヘビ, lit. "Blacksnake") is a snake-like man who can mimic other wizards' magic. He is voiced by Yoshimitsu Shimoyama in Japanese and Jessie James Grelle in English.
  • Nullpudding (ナルプディング, Narupudingu) is a hunchbacked wizard who can cover his body in spikes. He is voiced by Eiji Miyashita in Japanese and Brad Jackson in English.

Balam Alliance[edit]

The Balam Alliance (バラム同盟, Baramu Dōmei, "Baram Alliance" in the English anime), is a triad of dark guilds that control all others in the series except the independent Raven Tail.[ch. 131] The organization is described as a "non-aggression pact" whose guilds act independently from one another in spite of their designation as an "alliance".[ch. 200] The alliance is dissolved after all three guilds are defeated.

Oración Seis[edit]

Oración Seis (六魔将軍, Orashion Seisu) is a six-member guild that is considered a part of the Balam Alliance despite its small size, requiring the guilds Fairy Tail, Blue Pegasus, Lamia Scale, and Cait Shelter to form their own alliance against them.[ch. 131] Five of its members – Cobra, Racer, Hoteye, Angel, and Midnight – are child slaves from the Tower of Heaven who are adopted by Brain to annihilate the world's official guilds by unsealing "Nirvana" (ニルヴァーナ, Niruvāna), an ancient magic weapon that reverses morality. Cobra secures their release from prison seven years after their arrest, after which the five abandon Brain and join Crime Sorcière.[ch. 364]

  • Brain (ブレイン, Burein), the guild's leader, is a superintelligent wizard and Jellal Fernandes's mentor from the Tower of Heaven.[ch. 147] He uses a sentient staff named Kurodoa (クロドア, "Klodoa" in the English anime) to perform dark magic.[ch. 154] Brain suffers from a destructive split personality named Zero (ゼロ), who serves as the guild's true master, and is suppressed by magic seals linked to the guild's members.[ch. 156] Cobra kills Brain for his manipulations seven years after their release from prison.[ch. 364] Brain and Zero are voiced by Tetsu Inada in Japanese,[28] and by Philip Weber in English.

The guild shares its name with a group of antagonists from Rave Master; Mashima originally used the name as a placeholder, which he ultimately kept by the release deadline.[vol. 16:185] Mashima decided on the members' background as slaves early in their development, but struggled to incorporate it into the story.[vol. 19:187] He ranked Cobra fifth among the characters whose popularity defied his expectations, although he could not explain the reason for his positive reception, calling it "a mystery".[vol. 32:191]

Grimoire Heart[edit]

Grimoire Heart (悪魔の心臓, Gurimoa Hāto) is the most powerful guild of the Balam Alliance.[ch. 210] Led by Hades,[ch. 215] the guild's members mistake Zeref to be in a weakened "sleeping" state and aim to awaken him, which they believe would bring about a world where wizards may thrive and flourish while annihilating non-magic users, who make up over 90% of Earth-land's population.[ch. 221] Their discovery of Zeref on Sirius Island results in a battle with Fairy Tail,[ch. 207] which ends with Grimoire Heart disbanding when Zeref kills Hades for summoning Acnologia through their actions.[ch. 250]

  • Blue Note Stinger (ブルーノート・スティンガー, Burū Nōto Sutingā) is Grimoire Heart's subcommander, who generates powerful gravity fields and black holes, rivaling Gildarts Clive in strength. He is recruited by the guild Orochi's Fin (蛇鬼の鰭, Orochi no Fin) eight years after Grimoire Heart's defeat, but is defeated by a strengthened Natsu Dragneel. Blue Note is voiced by Shirō Saitō in Japanese;[29] in English, his name is spelled Bluenote and he is voiced by Chuck Huber.
  • The Seven Kin of Purgatory (煉獄の七眷属, Rengoku no Nana Kenzoku) are Grimoire Heart's elite wizard team, trained by Hades in different forms of Lost Magic (失われた魔法, Rosuto Majikku), which are noted as being lost to history because of their enormous power and terrible side effects when misused.[ch. 40, 217] Ultear Milkovich and Merudy are members of the Seven Kin before defecting from Grimoire Heart.
    • Zancrow (ザンクロウ, Zankurō) is a God Slayer (滅神魔導士, Goddo Sureiyā) who uses divine black flames that overpower Natsu's Dragon Slayer magic.[ch. 217-219] He is killed by Zeref's curse after taking him from Merudy. Zancrow is voiced by Tetsu Shiratori in Japanese,[29] and by Ian Ferguson in English.
    • Zoldio (ゾルディオ, Zorudio) is Layla Heartfilia's treacherous former servant, whose Human Subordination Magic (人間隷属魔法, Ningen Reizoku Mahō) weakens and enslaves humans.[ch. 223] Zoldio first appears while fused with Capricorn as Caprico (カプリコ, Kapuriko), resulting from Zoldio's misuse of his Lost Magic, and fades from existence upon being unfused.[ch. 210, 224] Zoldio is voiced by Hiroki Yasumoto in Japanese; in English, his name is Zordio and he is voiced by Marcus D. Stimac.
    • Rustyrose (ラスティローズ, Rasutirōzu, also "Rusty Rose") is one of the Seven Kin who uses the Arc of Incarnation (具現のアーク, Gugen no Āku) to materialize any object or apparition from his imagination.[ch. 222] His name is derived from that of a cocktail.[vol. 27:184] Rustyrose is voiced by Kazuma Horie in Japanese,[29] and by Justin Locklear in English.

    • Azuma (アズマ) is one of the Seven Kin whose Arboreal Arc (大樹のアーク, Taiju no Āku) allows him to control trees and harness magic power accumulated within the earth.[ch. 235] His overuse of his magic causes him to die by transforming into a tree.[ch. 238] The character is named after television actor Mikihasa Azuma.[vol. 27:184] Azuma is voiced by Hiroshi Shirokuma in Japanese,[29] and by Ray Hurd in English.

Tartaros[edit]

Tartaros (冥府の門, Tarutarosu) is a guild that consists of Etherious demons summoned from books written by Zeref. Its members use curses (呪法, juhō), a counterpart to magic that draws from negative emotions.[ch. 410] Their guildhall is located on the floating island Cube (冥界島, Kyūbu), which transforms into the monster Pluto's Grim (冥王獣, Puruto Gurimu).[ch. 382] Tartaros's purported master is E.N.D., Zeref's most powerful Etherious whom its members believe to be sealed within his book, which they attempt to unseal by detonating the Magic Council weapon Face, a cross-continental network of pulse bombs designed to neutralize Ishgal's magic. After Tartaros's defeat, the guild's surviving members are absorbed by Mirajane Strauss.

  • Mard Geer Tartaros (マルド・ギール・タルタロス, Marudo Gīru Tarotarosu) is the guild's commander, the "Underworld King" (冥王, Meiō) and keeper of E.N.D.'s book, which he uses to influence the other Etherious into forming Tartaros.[ch. 465] His curse power allows him to produce endless thorn brambles,[ch. 385] while his true form is a winged demon.[ch. 410] He is killed by Zeref after his power proves to be insufficient to defeat Natsu and Gray Fullbuster.[ch. 414] Mard Geer is voiced by Toshiyuki Morikawa in Japanese and Vic Mignogna in English.
  • The Nine Demon Gates (九鬼門, Kyūkimon) are Tartaros's elite force, who are resurrected in a facility run by the bunny girl demon Lummy (ラミー, Ramī) whenever they are killed in battle.
    • Kyôka (キョウカ, Kyōka) is the birdlike leader of the Nine Demon Gates. Her Strength Enhancement (強化, Kyōka) curse infinitely reinforces her strength and people's sensitivity to pain, which she uses to torture humans or test their suitability to become demons. Mashima stated that Kyôka was a character he "really [enjoyed]", and that she would do "a bunch of cruel things".[vol. 42:184] Kyôka is voiced by Ai Kayano in Japanese and Janelle Lutz in English.
    • Silver Fullbuster (シルバー・フルバスター, Shirubā Furubasutā) is Gray's deceased father, who is reanimated by Keyes to serve on the Nine Demon Gates. He presents himself as a human vessel for Deliora, the Etherious who killed him. Learning Ice Demon Slayer Magic to destroy E.N.D. and the rest of Tartaros from within, he passes his powers onto Gray after Keyes is destroyed as per Silver's request to allow himself to remain dead. The story arc between Silver and Gray was something Mashima had determined prior to Silver's appearance, but was largely changed upon noticing a "vital" setup mistake during their battle scene.[vol. 46:177] Silver is voiced by Kenjiro Tsuda in Japanese and Matthew Mercer in English.
    • Jackal (ジャッカル, Jakkaru) is a lycanthropic demon who creates explosions and detonates anything with which he comes in contact.[ch. 360] Mashima was surprised by Jackal's popularity among readers despite the character being "an awful guy", and added that he had difficulty writing Jackal's "half-baked Osaka-area accent".[vol. 45:189] He is voiced by Takuma Terashima in Japanese and Ricco Fajardo in English.
    • Franmalth (フランマルス, Furanmarusu) is a cyclops demon whose Revolution (進化, Reboryūshon) curse absorbs the souls of others, including the deceased Hades, which allows him to use their abilities. He is voiced by Yutaka Aoyama in Japanese and Jeremy Schwartz in English.
    • Torafuzar (トラフザー, Torafuzā) is a shark-like demon who creates floods of poisonous water with his curse, Depths of Hell's Darkness (天地晦冥, Tenchi Kaimei),[ch. 396] and turns his body harder than iron.[ch. 397] He is voiced by Masaki Terasoma in Japanese and Randy E. Aguebor in English.
    • Ezel (エゼル, Ezeru) is a demon with multiple arms that cut through anything via his curse, the Five Swords Under Heaven (天下五剣, Tenga Goken).[ch. 376] He is voiced by Hiroshi Tsuchida in Japanese and Ben Bryant in English.
    • Seilah (セイラ, Seira) is a horned female demon who controls people's bodies by using her curse, Macro (命令, Makuro). She is also Kyôka's romantic partner. She survives as one of Mirajane's Satan Soul forms after being absorbed by her Takeover magic. Seilah is voiced by Aki Toyosaki in Japanese and Michelle Rojas in English.
    • Keyes (キース, Kīsu) is a skeletal demon who uses the Necromancer (死人使い, Nekuromansā) curse to reanimate human corpses for battle or experimentation. He is voiced by Jouji Nakata in Japanese and Doug Jackson in English.
    • Tempester (テンペスター, Tenpesutā) is a bestial demon who utters imitative words that invoke natural disasters. He suffers from amnesia due to repeated resurrections, while his deaths leave clouds of toxic Devil Particles (魔障粒子, Mashō Ryūshi). He is voiced by Takahiro Mizushima in Japanese and Ian Moore in English.
  • Ziemma Orland (ジエンマ・オーランド, Jienma Ōrando) is Minerva's cruel father and Saber Tooth's initial master, who is later expelled and replaced by Sting Eucliffe. He joins Tartaros in pursuit of greater power as a demon, but is killed by Sting and Rogue Cheney. Ziemma is voiced by Eiji Miyashita in Japanese and John McCalmont in English.

Acnologia[edit]

Acnologia (アクノロギア, Akunorogia) is one of the series' overarching antagonists, a black dragon known as the "Dragon King" (竜の王, Ryū no Ō) who wreaks apocalyptic destruction across Earth-land.[ch. 252] Originally an unnamed human Dragon Slayer who hates dragons for the slaughter of his family and other innocents,[ch. 543] Acnologia transformed into a dragon after driving the species to near extinction in the Dragon King Festival (竜王祭, Ryūōsai), a 400-year-old historic event.[ch. 301] As the "Dragon of Magic" (魔竜, Maryū, "Arcane Dragon" in the Funimation version), he possesses no elemental Dragon Slayer trait, which grants him resistance to all forms of magic;[ch. 528] he is also able to switch between his human and "dragonified" forms at will.[ch. 436] Eventually, after his dragon body and human spirit become separated by the space between time,[ch. 540] Acnologia is killed in a final showdown against Ishgal's wizards after Lucy seals his body within Fairy Sphere, allowing Natsu to destroy his spiritual form with the combined magic of his fellow Dragon Slayers.[ch. 544] Acnologia is voiced by Kōsuke Toriumi in Japanese and J. Michael Tatum in English.

Alvarez Empire[edit]

The Alvarez Empire (アルバレス帝国, Arubaresu Teikoku, also "Albareth") is a massive military nation that is located west of Ishgal on the continent of Alakitasia, and constitutes the strength of 730 guilds over Ishgal's 500.[ch. 439] Founded and ruled by Zeref under the alias "Spriggan" (スプリガン, Supurigan), the empire's main objective is to seize Ishgal and forcibly obtain Mavis Vermillion's power of Fairy Heart to use against Acnologia.[ch. 445] Zeref's personal guard is the Spriggan 12 (スプリガン12, Supurigan Tuerubu), whose powers surpass Ishgal's Ten Wizard Saints.[ch. 440] Its members are:

  • August (オーガスト, Ōgasuto) is the Spriggan 12's elderly general and strongest member,[ch. 451, 493] who instantly acquires any "caster-type" spell he sees via copying magic.[ch. 526] He is also Zeref and Mavis's unknown son, and dies sparing Mavis from a suicide attack without revealing his identity to either of them.[ch. 526, 527] In 100 Years Quest, he appears in the afterlife as a child raised by his parents. August is voiced by Yoshito Yasuhara in Japanese and Bruce DuBose in English.
  • Irene Belserion (アイリーン・ベルセリオン, Airīn Beruserion) is a High Enchanter (高位付加術士, Hai Enchantā) who can infuse magic power into anything, rivaling August in strength.[ch. 489] She is also Erza Scarlet's centuries-old "dragonified" mother, and the inventor of Dragon Slayer magic, who abandoned her daughter after being driven insane by her transformation.[ch. 513-515] While attempting to kill an adult Erza, Irene regains her sanity and commits suicide with Erza's sword. In 100 Years Quest, Irene is revealed to have copied her personality into Wendy Marvell's body to survive. She eventually sacrifices herself to heal a mortally wounded Selene, who reincarnates her in Edolas as Mystogan and Erza Nightwalker's daughter. Irene is voiced by Takako Honda in Japanese and Rachel Robinson in English.
  • God Serena (ゴッドセレナ, Goddo Serena) is a Dragon Slayer who wields eight different elemental powers at once. Originally Ishgal's top-ranking Wizard Saint, he defects to Alvarez to personally fight Acnologia, but is killed almost immediately during their confrontation.[ch. 440, 470] In 100 Years Quest, an alchemically created clone of God Serena appears as a member of Gold Owl, but is destroyed by Jellal. God Serena is voiced by Kazuyuki Okitsu in Japanese and David Matranga in English.
  • Brandish μ (ブランディッシュ・μ, Burandisshu Myū) is a young woman whose Command T (コマンドT, Komando Tī) magic alters the size and mass of anything.[ch. 443] She attempts to kill Lucy Heartfilia to avenge her own mother, Grammi (グラミー, Guramī), whom she believes was killed by Lucy's mother in a dispute over Aquarius's key. After discovering Zoldio to be Grammi's real killer, Brandish becomes friendlier towards Lucy. In 100 Years Quest, she periodically encounters Fairy Tail in her search of Aquarius's key on the continent of Guiltina. Brandish is voiced by Manami Numakura in Japanese and Amber Lee Connors in English.
  • Invel Yura (インベル・ユラ, Inberu Yura) is Zeref's chief of staff, and an ice wizard who "freezes" people's minds to control their thoughts.[ch. 494] In 100 Years Quest, he is arrested for trying to start another war with Ishgal. Invel is voiced by Tomoaki Maeno in Japanese and Clay Wheeler in English.
  • DiMaria Yesta (ディマリア・イエスタ, Dimaria Iesuta, "Dimaria" in the anime) is a swordswoman who shares a turbulent friendship with Brandish. Her "God Soul" (ゴッドソウル, Goddo Sōru) Takeover gives her the form and time-stopping abilities of the god Chronos.[ch. 474] In 100 Years Quest, she becomes a farm worker after being traumatized repeatedly during the war with Ishgal. DiMaria is voiced by Natsumi Fujiwara in Japanese and Meli Grant in English.
  • Ajeel Raml (アジィール・ラムル, Ajiīru Ramuru, also "Rommul") is a sand wizard who conjures colossal golems and city-engulfing sandstorms. He is also the grandson of Alvarez's minister of state, Yajeel (ヤジール, Yajīru). In 100 Years Quest, he becomes Alvarez's new ruler through his royal connections. Ajeel is voiced by Hiromichi Tezuka in Japanese and Josh Bangle in English.
  • Wall Eehto (ワール・イーヒト, Wāru Īhito), a mechanical wizard and alchemist whose magic, Weakness (ウィークネス, Wīkunesu), constructs robotic soldiers designed to exploit his opponents' weaknesses. He participates in the war through a robotic puppet before being destroyed by Laxus Dreyar in his true form. The character's name is a pun on the Japanese term warui hito (悪い人, lit. "bad person"). Wall is voiced by Yō Kitazawa in Japanese and Derick Snow in English.
  • Bloodman (ブラッドマン, Buraddoman, also "Bradman") is a demonic entity whose body is composed of toxic Devil Particles, and who shares the same powers as the elite members of Tartaros. He is killed by Gajeel Redfox. Bloodman is voiced by Kenichirō Matsuda in Japanese and Brad Hawkins in English.
  • Neinhart (ナインハルト, Nainharuto) is a man who creates Historias (ヒストリア, Hisutoria), lifelike replicas of deceased figures from people's memories, which fight on his behalf. In 100 Years Quest, he is arrested for attempting to start another war with Ishgal. Neinhart is voiced by Kōsuke Ōnishi in Japanese and Kyle Igneczi in English.
  • Jacob Lessio (ジェイコブ・レッシオ, Jeikobu Resshio) is an assassin who uses the magic Stealth (ステルス, Suterusu) to conceal his presence and see invisible figures such as Mavis. In 100 Years Quest, he becomes a member of Ajeel's royal court. Jacob is voiced by Makoto Tamura in Japanese and Bryan Massey in English.
  • Larcade Dragneel (ラーケイド・ドラグニル, Rākeido Doraguniru) is an Etherious and prototype for E.N.D. who believes himself to be Zeref's son,[ch. 526] using deadly powers that exploit humans' cardinal desires for sex, food, and sleep.[ch. 508-512] Zeref destroys Larcade after informing him of his true nature. He returns in 100 Years Quest as a child adopted by Zeref and Mavis in the afterlife. He is voiced by Kenshō Ono in Japanese and Jason Liebrecht in English.

Mashima has considered the Spriggan 12 to be the strongest characters in the series,[vol. 52:185] describing their abilities as "cheating magic" that other authors would generally avoid using to preserve the framework of the story.[vol. 56:189] While determining the number of members, Mashima argued against his editor's suggestion of using five or six members as opposed to twelve, citing "a bit of a secret reason for it".[vol. 52:185] He designed Jacob Lessio after an actor he "really liked", and bemoaned that his role was smaller than initially planned.[vol. 56:189] Irene Belserion's role as the "mother of Dragon Slayers" was determined by "well before" her debut, but Mashima did not decide on her relationship with Erza until after the former's confrontation with Acnologia.[vol. 60:188] Mashima has noted the popularity of God Serena and the team's female members, particularly Brandish μ, while considering Jacob to be his personal favorite member of the team.[vol. 60:185]

Five Dragon Gods[edit]

The Five Dragon Gods (五神竜, Goshinryū, lit. "Five God Dragons") are the central antagonists of Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest, being a group of dragons who survived the Dragon King Festival by fleeing to Guiltina to hide from Acnologia. They are each considered to have become as strong as Acnologia since then, and are viewed as deities by Guiltina's citizens. Several of the dragons have the ability to assume humanoid forms. To prevent them from causing a potential catastrophe, the object of the 100 Years Quest is for wizards to seal the dragons away, either by killing them or neutralizing their power.

Ignia[edit]

Ignia (イグニア, Igunia), the Fire Dragon God (炎神竜, Enjinryū), is Igneel's biological son and Natsu Dragneel's adoptive brother, who is notorious in Guiltina for burning down countless countries. Having trained himself to defeat Acnologia as a test of his own strength, he aims to turn Natsu into a worthy opponent for himself after learning of his victory over Acnologia, a feat that disappoints Ignia due to Natsu's reliance on his friends' power to achieve it.

Mercphobia[edit]

Mercphobia (メルクフォビア, Merukufobia) is the Water Dragon God (水神竜, Suijinryū), worshiped by the people of the seaside town Ermina for his power over the ocean. He is a peaceful dragon who abandoned his cruel and violent nature after rescuing Karameel (カラミール, Karamīru), a human girl with whom he lives. However, his diminishing control over his magic causes the tide to submerge Ermina at night, leading him to transform its citizens into fish to help them survive. After falling under Faris's control, he goes on a mindless rampage in his dragon form until Natsu defeats him with Ignia's power, which permanently turns Mercphobia into a powerless human and allows him to continue living peacefully in Ermina.

Aldoron[edit]

Aldoron (アルドロン, Arudoron) is the Wood Dragon God (木神竜, Mokushinryū), whose gargantuan body serves as the foundation of Drasil, Guiltina's largest city. The humans of Drasil provide nutrients for Aldoron, who sleeps to regain his strength after nearly being killed by Acnologia. Each of Drasil's five towns houses an orb that seals Aldoron's power, causing him to awaken when the orbs are destroyed by Faris and Diabolos, who are misled by Selene's false claims that doing so would weaken him. Aldoron is protected by five humanoid trees called God Seeds (ゴッドシード, Goddo Shīdo), with the strongest of them serving as Aldoron's brain and avatar. Aldoron is gradually weakened by each God Seed's destruction, resulting in his death when Natsu defeats his avatar.

Selene[edit]

Selene (セレーネ, Serēne) is the Moon Dragon God (月神竜, Gesshinryū), who possesses power over the moon and stars, as well as the ability to freely travel between different parallel worlds. She manipulates Faris into helping her ravage Earth-land with the Five Dragon Gods for her own entertainment.

Viernes[edit]

Viernes (ビエルネス, Bierunesu) is the Gold Dragon God (金神竜, Kinjinryū), whose powers and abilities are unknown.[ch. 24:100YQ]

Gold Owl (黄金の梟, Gōrudo Ōru)

Dogramag[edit]

Dogramag (ドグラマグ, Doguramagu), the Earth Dragon God (土神竜, Doshinryū), is a sixth Dragon God killed by Elefseria prior to the 100 Years Quest's issuing, being the weakest of the dragons. His remains are the source of the Great Labyrinth of Dogra, a constantly expanding underground labyrinth made of indestructible stone. As Ignia's friend and collaborator, Dogramag revives himself by storing his life force within Elefseria's disembodied heart, which he consumed during their earlier battle. He is killed by Natsu after Selene helps Fairy Tail destroy a set of magic cores throughout the labyrinth that render Dogramag invincible.

Supporting characters[edit]

Jellal Fernandes[edit]

Jellal Fernandes (ジェラール・フェルナンデス, Jerāru Ferunandesu, also "Fernandez") is Erza Scarlet's childhood friend and fellow slave from the Tower of Heaven, who betrays her when he is brainwashed by Ultear ten years before the series' start. He first appears as Siegrain (ジークレイン, Jīkurein), a Wizard Saint and member of the Magic Council whose Heavenly Body Magic (天体魔法, Tentai Mahō) gives him spells associated with astronomical objects, increasing his speed and producing powerful energy attacks. Jellal manipulates Erza, their friends, and the Council into helping him complete the tower and revive the supposedly deceased Zeref, killing his friend Simon in the process. After Natsu Dragneel defeats him, Jellal is resuscitated by Wendy Marvell on behalf of the Oración Seis, but suffers from amnesia. Tormented with guilt upon learning of his crimes, he aids Fairy Tail's alliance against the Oración Seis before being arrested by the Council. He forms Crime Sorcière as its leader one year later after regaining his memories and being freed from prison by Ultear and Merudy.

Mashima created Jellal's design, abilities, and initial name "Siegrain" as a reference to Sieg Hart, a character from his earlier series Rave Master. Jellal is voiced by Daisuke Namikawa in Japanese,[30] and by Robert McCollum in English.

Ultear Milkovich[edit]

Ultear Milkovich[a] (ウルティア・ミルコビッチ, Urutia Mirukobitchi) is Ur's daughter and a practitioner of the Arc of Time (時のアーク, Toki no Āku), a Lost Magic that alters the temporal state of objects.[ch. 42, 46] She also uses Ice Make magic inherited from her mother.[ch. 240, 241] First appearing on the Magic Council as Jellal's subordinate, she is later revealed to have brainwashed Jellal into becoming a scapegoat for her dark guild, Grimoire Heart.[ch. 102, 131] She initially seeks to travel back in time with Zeref's power and kill Ur, whom she resents for supposedly abandoning her at a research facility and replacing her with Gray Fullbuster and Lyon Vastia as a child, unaware that Ur was deceived into believing her daughter was dead. Ultear reforms upon learning the truth from her liquefied mother's memories in the ocean while battling Gray on Sirius Island.[ch. 240, 241] Seven years later, Ultear retires from Crime Sorcière after casting "Last Ages" (ラストエイジス, Rasuto Eijisu), a time-reversing spell that ages her into an elderly woman,[ch. 335, 339] while also creating a phantasm of herself that manifests when time is frozen.[ch. 475] Ultear is voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro in Japanese,[30] and by Lydia Mackay in English.

Lamia Scale[edit]

Lamia Scale (蛇姫の鱗, Ramia Sukeiru) is a wizard guild led by Ohba Babasaama (オーバ・ババサーマ, Ōba Babasāma), a cantankerous old woman.[ch. 263] A group of temporary deserters from the guild—Sherry Blendy, Yûka Suzuki, and Toby Orrolta—serve as Lyon Vastia's followers to take revenge against the demon Deliora for killing their families.[ch. 44] The guild later becomes Fairy Tail's allies against the Oración Seis after Lyon joins.[ch. 131, 132] Wendy Marvell and Carla temporarily join the guild during Fairy Tail's dissolution, with Wendy forming the "Sky Sisters" (天空シスターズ, Tenkū Shisutāzu) idol duo with her friend Sherria Blendy.[ch. 420]

"Sub-zero Emperor") on Galuna Island, where he attempts to unseal the frozen demon Deliora with the intent to defeat it and fulfill his dream of surpassing Ur,[ch. 29] blaming Gray for her sacrifice against Deliora ten years earlier.[ch. 38] After Deliora dies upon its release,[ch. 43] a reformed Lyon joins Lamia Scale.[ch. 46] Lyon is voiced by Yūki Kaji in Japanese and Jerry Jewell in English.[17][2]

After ousting Ziemma and losing to Fairy Tail in the Grand Magic Games, the guild softens and becomes one of Fairy Tail's allies.

Sting Eucliffe and Rogue Cheney[edit]

Sting Eucliffe (スティング・ユークリフ, Sutingu Yūkurifu) and Rogue Cheney (ローグ・チェニー, Rōgu Chenī), collectively known as the Twin Dragons (双竜, Sōryū), are a duo of "third generation" Dragon Slayers tutored by the dragons Weisslogia (バイスロギア, Baisurogia) and Skiadram (スキアドラム, Sukiadoramu), respectively, in addition to receiving dragon lacrima implants for greater power.[ch. 265, 293] As a method of providing experience, the two are given false memories of killing their dragons during their childhood.[ch. 415] Along with Natsu Dragneel, Gajeel Redfox, and Wendy Marvell, the two are later revealed to be children sent 400 years from the past through Eclipse, Zeref's time travel gate, in their dragons' plan to kill Acnologia.[ch. 465]

An alternate timeline version of Rogue appears during the Grand Magic Games, using Eclipse to travel seven years from the future. Corrupted by his own magic following Gray Fullbuster's killing of Frosch in his timeline, "Future Rogue" manipulates Hisui E. Fiore into unleashing a horde of dragons from the past, intending to supplant Acnologia as the Dragon King.[ch. 326, 328] He is sent back to his original timeline when Eclipse is destroyed by Natsu, who averts Frosch's death to prevent the present-day Rogue's corruption.[ch. 337] Rogue is voiced by Kenichi Suzumura in Japanese and Garrett Storms in English.[31]

Mashima created the character to be the weakest member of the Seven Kin of Purgatory, and was surprised by her popularity among readers, ranking her second among those who defied his expectations.[vol. 32:191] He said the character's name "just sort of came to [him]", and regretted using it after realizing it belonged to a character from "an old RPG [he] used to play".[vol. 27:184] Merudy is voiced by Saori Gotō in Japanese.[30] In English, her name is Meldy and she is voiced by Bryn Apprill.

Recurring characters[edit]

Kingdom of Fiore[edit]

The Kingdom of Fiore (フィオーレ王国, Fiōre Ōkoku) is a country in Ishgal that serves as the primary setting of Fairy Tail. Its king is Toma E. Fiore (トーマ・E・フィオーレ, Tōma Ī Fiōre), who works incognito as "Mato" (マトー, Matō), the pumpkin mascot and referee of the kingdom's annual Grand Magic Games (大魔闘演武, Dai Matō Enbu) tournament, identified by his verbal tic, "Punkin" (カボ, Kabo).[ch. 269, 325] The kingdom also employs a team of wizards called the Hungry Wolf Knights (餓狼騎士団, Garō Kishidan), who execute prisoners sentenced to the city's labyrinthine dungeon. With the exception of the knights' leader, "Scythe" (カマ, Kama), the designs of the other four members – Uosuke (ウオスケ), Neppa (ネッパー, Neppā), Cosmos (コスモス, Kosumosu), and Kamika (カミカ) – were submitted by readers as part of a contest in the book Chotto Moorimashita.[vol. 37:197]

Hisui E. Fiore[edit]

Hisui E. Fiore (ヒスイ・E・フィオーレ, Hisui Ī Fiōre) is King Toma's daughter and Fiore's crown princess, whose name is derived from the Japanese word for "jade" (翡翠, hisui).[ch. 311] She organizes a plan to use Zeref's time machine, the Eclipse Gate, to travel 400 years back in time and kill him in his mortal state.[ch. 302, 311] However, her actions unwittingly unleash a swarm of dragons from the past onto the kingdom,[ch. 316, 327] which creates a series of overlapping timelines: one where Lucy Heartfilia travels from the immediate future to prevent Hisui's plan, and the current timeline where Rogue Cheney travels from seven years further ahead to thwart Lucy by killing her and manipulating Hisui.[ch. 333] One year after the war against the Alvarez Empire, Hisui ascends the throne as queen in place of her retired father.[ch. 545]

Hisui is voiced by Suzuko Mimori in Japanese, and by Morgan Mabry in English.

Arcadios[edit]

The Magic Council (魔法評議院, Mahō Hyōgiin) is an organization that administers the legal guilds in Ishgal.[ch. 2] Initially chaired by Crawford Theme (クロフォード・シーム, Kurofōdo Shīmu), the council's members have little tolerance for Fairy Tail's property-damaging tactics, despite their role in handling criminals and monsters that threaten the peace.[ch. 1] Members of the council include Jellal Fernandes and Ultear Milkovich, two of its younger members,[ch. 1] who manipulate the other councilors into using the superweapon Etherion (エーテリオン, Ēterion) to activate the Tower of Heaven.[ch. 79] Seven years after the disgraced council is reorganized under Grand Doma (グラン・ドマ, Guran Doma, also "Gran Doma"),[ch. 200] Crawford betrays the councilors by informing Tartaros of Face (フェイス, Feisu), a cross-continental network of pulse bombs designed to eliminate all magic in Ishgal, which results in the assassination of Crawford and most of the other councilors, who serve as the seals to Face. The council is reformed again using members of the Ten Wizard Saints, while Gajeel Redfox, Panther Lily, and Levy McGarden temporarily enter its service as custody officers during Fairy Tail's disbandment.

Yajima[edit]

Voiced by: Masafumi Kimura (Japanese); Steve Powell (English)

Yajima (ヤジマ) is Makarov Dreyar's longtime friend, and one of the few councilors to openly speak in Fairy Tail's defense.[ch. 69] He possesses the magical ability to flatten his body. Although he avoids disgrace by opposing the firing of Etherion on the Tower of Heaven, Yajima retires to open a restaurant that frequently employs Fairy Tail's members for part-time work.[ch. 131] In the anime adaptation and 100 Years Quest, he is depicted as a former member of Fairy Tail.

Lahar[edit]

Celestial Spirits[edit]

Celestial Spirits (星霊, Seirei) are beings that are contracted by celestial wizards such as Lucy Heartfilia, who use enchanted Gatekeys (門の鍵, Gēto no Kagi) to summon them for battle and other tasks.[ch. 1, 4] The spirits are immortal and possess various magic powers and abilities, but lose their power when they remain outside their realm for extended periods of time, which is fatal to them.[ch. 72-74] Numerous spirits are summoned using store-bought silver Gatekeys, such as Nikora (ニコラ, "Nicola" in the English anime), a breed of "dog" spirits that are kept as pets.[ch. 4] There are also twelve unique golden keys that summon more powerful spirits based on the zodiacal constellations, including Leo, the true form of Loke.[ch. 4, 72]

  • The Celestial Spirit King (星霊王, Seireiō) is an all-powerful spirit who governs the Celestial World.[ch. 74] He is capable of being summoned through the sacrifice of a golden zodiac key belonging to a spirit who shares a strong bond with their summoner. Virgo is voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro in Japanese and Terri Doty in English.
  • Sagittarius (サジタリウス, Sajitariusu) is a tall man who wears a horse costume and possesses superb archery skills.[ch. 62] Lucy acquires his key as Fairy Tail's reward for completing the S-Class mission on Galuna Island. He is voiced by Masaki Kawanabe [ja] in Japanese and Wilbur Penn in English.
  • Aries (アリエス, Ariesu) is a timid young woman with sheep horns who conjures wool clouds that subdue her opponents.[ch. 172] Abused by her original owner, Karen Lilica, she is taken by Karen's killer, Angel, before coming under Lucy's ownership. She is voiced by Sayaka Narita [ja] in Japanese and Didi Archilla in English.
  • Gemini (ジェミニ, Jemini) are small twin spirits who mimic the appearances and abilities of others,[ch. 133] and can also read their minds.[ch. 143] They are used by Angel before abandoning her for Lucy. In Japanese, the male twin Gemi (ジェミー, Jemī) is voiced by Yukiyo Fujii, and the female twin Mini (ミニー, Minī) by Kanami Satō [ja]; in English, they are voiced by Heather Walker and Michelle Rojas, respectively.
  • Scorpio (スコーピオン, Sukōpion) is a man with a sand-firing cannon shaped like a scorpion tail.[ch. 172] He is also Aquarius's boyfriend, and one of Angel's spirits who comes under Lucy's ownership. He is voiced by Daisuke Kishio in Japanese; in English, he is voiced by Andrew Chandler in the 2009 and 2014 series, and by Kyle Phillips in the 2018 series.

  • Ophiuchus (オフィウクス, Ofiukusu) is a giant, mechanical snake spirit who is considered to be the "thirteenth" zodiac spirit, and is owned by Yukino.[ch. 280] Ophiuchus is voiced by Asami Tano in Japanese and Carli Mosier in English.

Edolas[edit]

Edolas (エドラス, Edorasu) is a parallel universe that exists separately from Earth-land, the universe in which Fairy Tail takes place. It is inhabited by counterparts of Earth-land's residents, each with opposing personalities or traits such as age and species.[ch. 170, 176] It is also the home of Jellal Fernandes's counterpart, Mystogan, and Exceed such as Happy and Carla. As opposed to Earth-land, magic is a limited resource in Edolas and cannot be used as a natural ability by humans, who instead use items combined with magic-infused lacrima crystals siphoned from Earth-land through inter-dimensional Anima (アニマ) portals.[ch. 169, 172] Similarly, the Earth-land wizards are only able to use magic in Edolas after taking pills provided by Mystogan.[ch. 180] The world's magic supply is permanently depleted when Mystogan reverses the Anima's effects to return the stolen magic.[ch. 198]

Edolas Fairy Tail[edit]

A version of Fairy Tail exists in Edolas as a dark guild because of Faust's abolition of wizard guilds. Among its members are Natsu Dragyon (ナツ・ドラギオン, Natsu Doragion), Natsu Dragneel's timid counterpart and the guild's vehicle expert;[ch. 174] Lucy Ashley (ルーシィ・アシュレイ, Rūshii Ashurei), a boyish and intimidating version of Lucy Heartfilia; Gray Sorloge (グレイ・ソルージュ, Gurei Sorūju), an overdressed version of Gray Fullbuster who harbors unrequited feelings for Juvia Lockser's counterpart; and a teenage version of Wendy Marvell.[ch. 170] In 100 Years Quest, Natsu and Gray are shown to have married Lucy and Juvia, respectively, with the former couple having a daughter, Nasha (ナーシャ, Nāsha), and the latter having a son, Greige (グレージュ, Gurēju).

The kingdom of Edolas is ruled by Faust (ファウスト, Fausuto) is the king of Edolas and Mystogan's father who obsessively steals Earth-land's magic to bestow eternal magic to his kingdom.[ch. 169, 190] The Earth-land wizards prevent Faust from committing genocide against the Exceed race using a giant lacrima formed from Magnolia's residents, battling the dragon-shaped mecha Doroma Anim (ドロマ・アニム, Doroma Animu) manned by the king.[ch. 190] In the anime adaptation, Faust is revealed to be Makarov Dreyar's counterpart, based on a discarded plot point in the manga. He is voiced by Shinpachi Tsuji in Japanese and R. Bruce Elliott in English.

In addition to Panther Lily, the Edolas royal military commanders are:

Exceed[edit]

The Exceed (エクシード, Ekushīdo) are a race of anthropomorphic cat-like beings from Edolas, where they reside on a floating island called Extalia (エクスタリア, Ekusutaria). With their shared Aera ability, they are the only natives of Edolas who naturally possess magic, for which they present themselves as angels to the humans of Edolas to protect themselves due to their history of being abused by humans.[ch. 176, 188] Before their births, Happy and Carla's eggs are sent to Earth-land along with 98 other unborn Exceed under the pretense of hunting and killing Dragon Slayers,[ch. 176] which is later revealed to be a cover for an evacuation effort from Edolas's impending loss of magic.[ch. 198] The entire Exceed race is transported to Earth-land after Mystogan reverses Edolas's anima.[ch. 197-198]
