From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2023–24 UEFA European Club Championships will be the first season of UEFA's four-tier European football competition. The new competition will see the elimination of the qualifying and play-off phases and an increase in the number of teams competing. The four competitions – European Cup, Europa League, Conference League and Challenge Cup – will each begin with a group stage comprising of 16 groups of five teams for a total of 320 teams.

The finals will be played in May and June 2024 at Wembley Stadium in London, the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, the Rajko Mitić Stadium in Belgrade and the Friends Arena in Stockholm.

Association team allocation

[edit]

A total of 320 teams from the 55 UEFA member associations are set to participate in the 2022–23 UEFA European Club Championships. The association ranking based on the UEFA association coefficients is used to determine the number of participating teams for each association:

Association ranking

[edit]

For the 2023–24 UEFA European Club Championships, the associations are allocated places according to their 2023 UEFA association coefficients, which takes into account their performance in European competitions from 2018–19 to 2022–23.[1]

Apart from the allocation based on the association coefficients, associations may have additional teams participating in the Champions League, as noted below:

  • (UCL) – Additional berth for UEFA Champions League title holders
  • (UEL) – Additional berth for UEFA Europa League title holders
  • (UECL) – Additional berth for UEFA Europa Conference League title holders

This process will be repeated among teams within the domestic league until there are no more qualifying berths to redistribute.
  • If the winners of the Europa Conference League also qualify for either the Europa League, Conference League or Challenge Cup via their domestic league, the above process will be followed. If they qualify for the European Cup via their domestic league, the following changes will be made:
    • The Europa Conference League winners berth will be vacated.
    • The champions of association 33 will enter the Europa League.
    • The runners-up of association 42 will enter the Conference League.
    • The fifth-placed team of association 54 will enter the Challenge Cup.
  • If the winners of the Liechtenstein Cup also qualify via their domestic league then they will take whichever berth is higher.
