The Illuminati Quiz (http://illuminati.mec.ac.in), conducted in memory of Sandeep Menon, is the annual quizzing event of Model Engineering College, Kerala, India.

Sandeep Menon[edit]

Sandeep Menon (1984-2008), Batch of 2006 - Model Engineering College, is the pioneer of quizzing in Model Engineering College and started the community called "The Illuminati" at MEC in 2004.

Menon(as he was called) always wanted to promote "MEC" and the college's abilities. As a fitting tribute to him the students of the college have been organizing a south India level quiz competition annually.

His parents have started a website in his memory at http://sandeepmenon.net and also started a foundation called the Sandeep Menon Foundation that helps cancer patients and students who are not able to finance their studies. The Illuminati[edit]

'The Illuminati' is the official quiz club of Model Engineering College. Founded by Sandeep Menon in 2004, the aim of this order is to promote and continue the quizzing tradition both within college and with the extended community.

The Illuminati have conducted over 200 intra and inter collegiate quizzes and have won numerous prizes all over Kerala. The club remains to date one of the most active quizzing societies in the state of Kerala. The spirit of quizzing is what drives the Illuminati forward and this manifests itself as the weekly TGIF (Thank God It’s Friday) quizzes.

History of the quiz[edit]

As of 2010, three annual versions of The Illuminati Quiz have been conducted at a South India level.

There is no better tribute to a dear friend than organising an event that he had always loved to participate in. Sandeep Menon, a former student of the Model Engineering College (MEC) at Thrikkakara, died of brain tumour on May 3, 2008. An avid quizzer, the youngster had founded ‘The Illuminati', the quizzing society of the college in 2005.

Quizzing talents at MEC have been organising ‘The Illuminati Quiz' in memory of Sandeep and the third edition of the event held on the campus on Saturday afternoon witnessed a full house of vibrant young quizzers fighting it out for top honours.

In a keenly fought competition, the team consisting of Amit R. of RNSIT, Bangalore, and Vineeth Raj of REC, Bangalore, walked away with the first prize and a purse of Rs. 20,000. Pramod of NIT, Trichy, and Hareesh of SVCE, Chennai, emerged runners-up. N. Sadashiv, the quiz master for the event, was Sandeep's team mate in various quiz competitions. Recalling his association with Sandeep, Sadashiv said that Sandeep had this amazing spirit of attending each and every quiz competition held in the State.

“We used to travel to various parts of the State for attending such competitions. There were instances we had reached late for the prelims in quiz events held in places like Idukki but Sandeep used to tell me that we need not worry, as the spirit of quizzing should take us forward always,” Sadashiv said.

The Illuminati has organised over 120 intra and inter collegiate quizzes on the campus and outside. Members of the society have also brought home several top honours. Sabarinath, secretary of the Illuminati Quizzing Society of MEC, said that the response to the latest edition of the Illuminati quiz was overwhelming.

The quiz master had taken care to come up some interesting mix of questions ranging from chess openings to names of organisations that hit headlines during the recent times in the preliminary round. It began with an interesting question on the connection between ‘Ruy Lopez de Segura, a 16 {+t} {+h} century Spanish priest, Guco Piano, 17 {+t} {+h} century Italian monk, and Moheschunder Bannerjee from Bengal” (the first two refer to chess openings and Mr. Banerjee, a player famous for his class of openings in mainstream chess).

Students were also told to name the organisation described itself as “having been founded by Chinese dissidents, as well as journalists, mathematicians, and start-up company technologists from the U.S., Taiwan, Europe, Australia and South Africa (Wikileaks).

Students also enthusiastically responded to a question on the connection between Amitabh Bachchan's film “Deewar” and Ajay Devgan's “Once Upon A Time in Mumbai” (inspired by the life of Haji Mastan, underworld don).

Six teams qualified for the final leg of the event, which came to an exciting finish at 5.30 p.m.

Sandeep Menon continues to live in the memories of his friends, who remember him as “a role model in many ways”. A former student of Model Engineering College at Thrikkakara, Sandeep died of brain tumour on May 3, 2008.

In a rich tribute to the young talent, who left this world prematurely, his friends have come together to organise an event in which Sandeep had really excelled. Come December 8, and the Model Engineering College will witness the best of quizzing talents battling it out for “The Illuminati Quiz” trophy.

N. Sadashiv, Sandeep’s friend and Placement Cell Student Co-ordinator, said that Sandeep was extremely active in college too. “He continued to balance his academic interests with his two big loves – quizzing and writing. He was the founder and coordinator of ‘The Iluminati’, the quiz group of MEC and he was the “Illuminatus”. The group was responsible for conducting internal quizzes and training newcomers,” he said.

Thejaswi Udupa from the Karnataka Quiz Association will be the quiz master of Illuminati quiz. It is a general quiz for college students. Candidates should be pursuing a fulltime degree in any discipline. They should bring their college identity cards to participate in the programme. The team size should not be greater than or less than two. Cross college teams (i.e. teams with members from different colleges) will not be allowed. There will be a written preliminary round. Six teams will make it to the finals.[7] [8]
