Raoul Barbe bleue is an opéra-comique (described as comédie) in three acts and in prose interspersed with arias, composed by André Grétry, with a libretto by Michel-Jean Sedaine. It was first performed by the Comédie-Italienne in the first Salle Favart in Paris, 2 March 1789, repeated Nonidi 26 Vendémiaire, Year III of the French Republican calendar (=? 20 October 1794).

Grétry and Sedaine's opera is a double recasting, based in large part on Charles Perrault's La Barbe bleue (1695), but also on mediaeval romances, in particular Roman du châtelain de Coucy et de la dame de Fayel et La châtelaine de Vergi [fr]. Sedaine borrowed the name Vergy to lend an air of mediaeval romance, evoking the 13c novelette in which the forbidden love of a châtelaine and a knight gives rise to a series of violent deaths.

Wagner[edit]

In his autobiography, Richard Wagner relates the strong impression made by his first experience of opera:

"car cette pièce était la première que gamin de cinq ans j'avais vue au théâtre à Dresde. J'en avais gardé un souvenir merveilleux que je revécus alors. Je me rappelais l'emphase avec laquelle, un chapeau en papier de ma propre fabrication sur la tête, et au grand amusement de toute la maison je déclamais l'air de Barbe-Bleue « perfide tu l'a ouverte ». One of the singers was Wilhelmine Schröder-Devrient, the future Elsa of Lohengrin and Elizabeth of Tannhäuser.

Modern revivals[edit]

Une production de la Compagnie les Monts du Reuil [fr] a été donnée en 2016 à l'Opéra de Reims^[1], the auditorium of the Bibliothèque nationale, Opéra de Metz et au théâtre de Saint-Dizier.

Synopsis[edit]

The future looks dark for two young lovers: though a nobleman, Vergy is destitute, while the beautiful Isaure is betrothed to a certain Raoul, a Lord of considerable wealth. The lovers have already chosen the path of renouncement and spited love, but everything changes when Raoul is discovered to have his particular way of discouraging his wives' curiousity.
