Richard Hinckley Allen[edit]

Richard Hinckley Allen was an entrepreneur, polymath and astronomer who lived from 1838 to 1908.

Born in Buffalo, New York, he was the son of Richard L. Allen and Sally Outram. He attended Yale University but was unable to graduated due to eyesight problems, which also prevented him from pursuing his interest in astronomy. From 1860 to 1885, he made a living as an exporter in New York City. During this time, he continued to have an interest in natural history, particularly ornithology, astronomy, animal husbandry and agriculture. In 1873, he married Mary Collins Wallace. In 1899, he published Star Names: Their Lore and Meaning, which was favorably received by both astronomers and general audiences.[1]

On January 9, 1908 he travelled to Northampton to attend his sister's funeral, with whom he was close. He was suffering from grippe at the time, and succumbed to pneumoia on January 14, 1908. He was buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.[2]
