Journalism

[edit]

After graduating from Aligarh, Ahmed worked initially at Dawn India, in 1946 and then founded the Daily News, Karachi, Pakistan, an English evening newspaper published by the Jang group of newspapers, and was its first editor. In 1968 he was the founding editor of The Sun from Karachi, another English daily in Pakistan. The publisher was Pervez Lari. The Sun became a popular newspaper and was the first newspaper to employ new computer publishing technology at the time. Because of the use of this technology it became possible to publish it from Lahore, Pakistan, thus becoming the first Pakistan newspaper to be published from two major cities, simultaneously. Another of its innovations was a full color, Sunday magazine, a first for any Pakistan newspaper. The Sun also used TV advertising for promotion, something unheard for a newspaper in Pakistan.

At various stages of his journalistic career he wrote for many other newspapers and also worked as a Pakistan correspondent for the Daily Express, UK and Globe and Mail, Toronto. In 1952 he went as a visiting journalist to work for the San Francisco Chronicle. He also worked for the weekly Statesman newspaper edited by Mohammad Owais. Although he graduated in Science, with a B.Sc., from the Aligarh University, he wrote a book on economics in the context of Pakistan.
